Abstract:Based on the data of site observation and indoor experiment, it gives a thorough description on the distribution, physical characteristics of fluid mud in North Passage of the Yangtze Estuary, the formation conditions and influencing factors, its rheological properties, settlement＆ consolidation characteristics, its influence on waterway siltation and dredging, as well as utilization of navigable depth, etc. Moreover, the source and evolutionary mechanism are initially discussed and the way for further study is proposed.

Abstract:The Jiaojiang Estuary is a macro-tidal estuary with high turbidity and funnel-shaped geomorphology. Estuarine geomorphology and shipping are highly affected by sediments and heavy coastal engineering. Based on observed data and numerical simulation results, we studied the characteristics of the suspended sediments and fluid mud in the estuary. By considering two-way coupling of water–sediment density and the process of fine sediment flocculation, a three-dimensional sediment model of the Jiaojiang Estuary was established and effectively calibrated using the measured data on tides, currents, and suspended sediment concentration (SSC). Field data analysis indicated that SSC and sediment transport rate in both the main tidal channel and shoals were positively correlated with the flow velocity in the low-frequency part during both the spring and neap tides. The model results revealed that the net sediment flux is controlled by advection and moves landward upstream of the main tidal channel. Fluid mud is formed near Haimen station, with tides influencing the spatial and temporal variations in its thickness and speed. Sediment is actively exchanged among fluid mud-water-seabed, with sink and source processes dominating near the bay mouth and the Haimen station, respectively. Sediments weaken the seaward residual currents slightly by changing their viscosity and the von Karman constant, and the stratification process is affected by changes in water density. The findings of this study provide a foundation for the study of material transportation in an estuarine ecosystem.

Abstract:In this paper,the complete depth-averaged turbulence model is adopted.The distribution of velocity and salinity field are gained by numerically simulating the pulsed non-steady flow field of YaoJiang riverway equipped with navigation lock.Moreover,the creative conception of part-contamination-permitted inland river is adopted.The salt concentration used as the control objective is presented as a new technical approach to optimize the littoral ship lock.As a result,scheduling and hydraulic design of ship lock can be optimized.and shiplock without pumps is possible.

Abstract:Using two-dimensional shallow-water tidal equation,on the basis of model verification against the field measured data,we achieved the real tidal flow field of Zhoushan,and analyzed the effect of Xiancaotan ship building-repairing engineering on the flow and silt in the nearby sea area and the change of water quality resulting from the sewage discharge.The result shows that the flow velocity in the southwest of levees and the northwest of No.1 pier region increases,while that in the other regions decreases;the maximum siltation volume near Gaobieshan pier and the material pier under the balance of scouring and silting reaches 2.0 m,so sometimes it needs dredging to guarantee the normal operation of the channel and other piers;the discharging of waste water from the project has little effect on the nearby sea,but the accident discharge of oil must be avoided to ensure the water quality.

Abstract:Based on the current and suspended sediments data, fluid mud, relief maps of sea bed, siltation along navigation channel, etc., the change and distribution of maximum turbidity along North Passage before and after the Construction of the first stage of Yangtze Estuary Deepwater Channel Regulation Project and its influence on the sedimentation along navigation channel in North Passage are summarized and studied in this paper. In addition, the change of mouth bar in North Passage before and after the construction is summarized and its future evolution is studied. The results can provide a valuable reference for the Construction of the Second and Third stage of Yangtze Estuary Deepwater Channel Regulation Project and some arguments on such problems as the evolution of maximum turbidity in North Passage and the effect of the first stage of Yangtze Estuary Deepwater Channel Regulation Project on the change of mouth bar, etc., are clarified.
Numerical Simulation on Dynamic Behaviour of Deepwater J-lay Systems

Abstract:The J-lay method is a comparatively feasible way to install offshore pipelines with larger diameter and heavier submerged weight in deepwater and ultra-deepwater area. In this paper, a full finite element model (FEM) for deepwater J-lay systems was established using the software OrcaFlex to study the actual dynamic pipelay effects, which are mainly caused by hydrodynamic forces and pipelay vessel motions. Meanwhile, a nonlinear hysteretic soil model was employed to characterise the vertical pipe-seabed interactions, and the modified Coulomb friction model was applied to simulate the lateral pipe-seabed interactions. An explanatory example about a steel pipeline being installed to the seabed of 1500 m water depth in the LW3-1 gas field of South China Sea was introduced to carry out the numerical analysis. The dynamic behaviour of the J-lay pipeline in terms of top effective tension, bending moment, seabed resistance and pipeline embedment in the touchdown zone (TDZ) was quantitatively evaluated. The comparisons between static and dynamic results of J-lay pipelines and between J-lay and S-lay dynamic results with identical pipelay conditions except for the departure points were carried out, respectively, in which the more noticeable dynamic effects are observed for deepwater J-lay pipelines.

Engineering Applications of Computational Fluid Mechanics

Abstract:The curved tidal channel, Luotou Deep-water Navigational Channel, is the main channel of the Ningbo Zhoushan Port, which is ranked first in the world. Tidal dynamics in the channel are spatially and temporally asymmetric. In this study, the three-dimensional tidal dynamics in the channel were analyzed using field data and simulated using FVCOM. The results show that the tides in the channel flood/ebb along the northern/southern bank near the bottom/surface layer and these asymmetries are due to the imbalanced Coriolis force, centrifugal force, sea-level gradient, and density gradient. Residual current velocity peaks (0.7 m/s) in the middle of the channel as the same distribution as sediment flux. There are two high turbidity zones (>4 kg/m(3)) which are northern at flood than at an ebb in the channel. The drag reduction effect of fluid mud enhances the lateral circulation, which is strong near the Chuanshan Peninsula and frictional dissipation plays an important role in it. The presence of suspended sediment changes the contribution of acceleration terms through impacting density and bottom friction, and the centrifugal force term has the largest increases. This study provides the foundation for the morphology evolution and harbor management of macro-tidal turbid coastal zones.
Numerical Simulation of Three-Dimensional Characteristics of Tidal Current and Residual Current in Yangshan Harbor

Abstract:The finite-volume community ocean model (FVCOM) was used to establish a high-resolution numerical model based on the latest bathymetry data and unstructured mesh. The three-dimensional characteristics of the tidal current and residual current in Yangshan Harbor after the construction of the harbor were studied. Model results indicated that the speed of flood tide was faster than that of the ebb tide in the west of the narrow, and the performance of the east was opposite. The speed in the south of the islands was higher than that in the north. High velocity region and circulation phenomenon appeared at the narrow entrance of the tidal channel, and the peak speed reached 2.88 m/s at the surface level during flood tide. In the north and south areas of the islands, eddies were formed during the flood slack tide, with the northward current at surface and southward current at bottom. And the direction was opposite during ebb slack tide. A circulation existed with the southward current at surface and northward current at bottom during ebb tide at the deep-water channel. The directions of the M2 tidal ellipses were controlled by the coastlines under the influence of the project. The tidal choking effect increased after the construction of the harbor. The residual current was dominated by seaward in Yangshan Harbor sea area, but landward residual current existed in the channel. Separation of residual current appeared at the narrow entrance of the tidal channel. The stagnation point moved eastward.
Three-Dimensional Tidal Dynamics in a Bended Deep Waterway

Abstract:For the complicated shoreline and bathymetry near the Zhoushan archipelago sea area, the 3-D tidal characteristic in the channel is complicated to handle and requires a detailed research. In this paper, a 3-D current model is established through FVCOM to study the tidal dynamics characteristic. The measured data of the current in the Zhoushan archipelago are collected to test the model, and the simulating process is generally consistent with real data. Conclusions are as follows by analyzing flow field, tide level, cross-section velocity distribution and distribution characteristics of residual current and so on. Tidal current near the Zhoushan archipelago sea area is largely affected by the inconsistent tidal power from different channels, the large curvature of main channel, Coriolis force and the channel opening direction and so on. The tides are larger along the northern bottom during the flood and larger along the southern surface of the Luotou channel during the ebb.

Abstract:Pieces of charts of sea area in Zhoushan from 1933 to 2004 are studied.Digital evaluation model(DEM) of different period is established based on GIS.By superposing the different DEM,the erosion and deposition in waterway of Ma′ao port,longitudinal profile and anchorage is calculated.It is shown that,in general,the erosion and deposition is balance and the seabed is stable in this sea area.The deposition is little in front of the dock,which is good for the depth maintaining.

Abstract:Fluid mud plays an important role in the maintenance of the estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM) and makes a significant contribution to estuarine sediment transport. A seabed tripod system and a shipboard vertical profile were deployed to explore the spatial-temporal variation and mechanism of fluid mud in the ETM of the Yangtze Estuary. The near-bed suspended sediment concentration (SSC) measured by OBS and ABS exceeded 50 kg/m(3), confirming the existence of fluid mud. The fluid mud layer varied frequently in thickness during spring and intermediate tides, with a maximum of up to 0.6 m, but maintained stability during neap tides. The thickness rose rapidly during the larger ebb tide in semidiurnal tidal cycles of intermediate tides when the gradient Richardson number (Ri) increased to exceed the critical value of 0.25, and the velocity at 0.2 mab was in the range of 0.5-0.8 m/s. The fluid mud layer transported more than twice as much sediment as the low-concentration upper layer did. Waves and intense currents at the flood phase of tide enhanced vertical mixing within the water column, with Ri being reduced to lower than 0.25 and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) exceeding 0.01 m(2)/s(2), leading to the breakdown of the fluid mud layer. Sediment stratification damps turbulence close to the seabed and leads to gradual solidification of the bottom fluid mud. Approximately 0.2 m of fluid mud deposit was formed on the seabed within 148 h of the observation period.

Abstract:This study presents in-situ observations of fluid mud in the Yangtze Estuary via a bottom tripod. Six occurrences of periodic fluid muds (F1-F6) were observed at high slack water, with suspended sediment concentration (SSC) exceeding 10 kg/m 3 . The thickness of the fluid mud varied across the six occurrences, reaching a maximum of 0.32m. Notably, temperature and salinity anomalies were observed within the fluid mud. The formation of fluid mud was found to be influenced by turbulence, with turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) below 5×10 -4 m 2 /s 2 favoring settling as the primary cause of formation. The critical shear stress ( τ cw ) for fluid mud formation was estimated to be approximately 0.09 Pa. The formation of fluid muds during early tidal cycles was attributed to liquefaction and bed erosion resulting from strong waves. However, in most cases, the wave energy was insufficient for erosion, suggesting that advection played a role in sediment supply during the subsequent tide cycles. The increased cross-channel current velocity during flood facilitated the lateral transport of a significant amount of eroded sediment from shallow water into the channel. Due to its short duration, the fluid mud layer was entrained by the current before consolidation. Enhanced turbulence led to the breakdown of fluid mud at the early ebb. The critical τ cw for fluid mud breakdown depended on the density and duration of the fluid mud, with a maximum value of up to 0.70 Pa. The absence of the fluid mud layer during low slack water and neap tide was associated with a reduction in advection and tidal pumping, disrupting the original sediment balance between supply and demand. These data provide valuable insights into the formation and breakdown of fluid mud, contributing to estuarine hydrodynamic modeling studies and enhancing the understanding of estuary dynamics.

Development conditions and schedule of north channel at Yangtze estuary

Abstract:Proper development of the north channel will reduce the navigation pressure of the south channel,smooth the Yangtze waterway,and broaden the coastline application at the Yangtze estuary.By analyzing the development conditions of the north channel,we research the development scale and schedule of it.It is concluded that at the present stage,we may regulate the north channel and construct a 5 000 DWT channel with the natural water depth so as to reduce partially the navigation pressure;In the near future,we can develop the 8m-deep-water channel and realize navigation of 20 000 DWT ships;As for the mid & long term,we shall regulate the north channel comprehensively and develop a 10 m-deep channel to satisfy the navigation of 30 000 DWT ships.

Abstract:By using optic and acoustic sensors, the fluid mud layer was detected in turbidity maximum of the Jiaojiang Estuary during three cruises carried out in 1991, 1994 and 1995. Records of time series of stations and transects across and along the river channel were collected. The data reveal that, in addition to the cyclic migration corresponded to the river runoff and tide prism, the fluid mud layer tends to concentrate on depressions or on one side of channel opposite its current-dominated channel. Such two tendencies result in a large suspended sediment reservoir being very sensitive to the boundary conditions of the turbidity maximum.

Abstract:The North Branch of theYangtze River estuary was historically the main channel of the Yangtze River to the sea.The channel has been depositing and gradually turning into a tide channel under the impact of natural stream evolution at the estuary and man-made blocking dams since 1950's.Due to the sediment deposition in the mid of 1990's,the channel has not been navigable.Currently only experienced mariners lead native boats through the channel during tide flow.Based on the surveyed data,the paper presents the causes of variation of bank lines and the mainstream channel,and analyses the impacts of the beach reclamation on the River Regime at North Branch.It is summarized that under tide the navigation of 500-tonne vessels through the channel of North Branch is basically ensured,and the probability of navigation of 1000-tonne vessels reaches 90%.Given some remedial measures,such as locally dredging and regulating the shallow channel,it is feasible to resume the transportation of 1000-tonne vessels in the North Branch.

Abstract:A 2-D tidal flow mathematical model of Xinghua Bay based on irregular triangular grid finite difference method was set up and numerical simulation of tidal flow field was carried out. For Nanri Waterway and Xinghua Waterway, which can be developed to deepwater navigational channels, esp., the water area near Jidan Island and Yema Islet, through which Xinghua Waterway passes, additional grid treatment was implemented and a detailed simulation was conducted for its flow field. Based on the numerical simulation results, this paper analyzed the characteristics of tidal flow fields of Xinghua Waterway and Nanri Waterway, which provided a basis for waterway planning and design.

Abstract:Investigation on initiation of sediment transport is reviewed to design a flume scour model.Experiments are carried out to determine the scour mechanism of sandy seabed below submarine pipelines with different intervals.Theoretical analyses,based on potential-flow theory,are proposed to find the law of the threshold velocity.Finite element modeling is also proposed to give a refining analysis for the experiments.Then the mechanism of seabed scouring is discussed,and scour stages are divided.The hazard of exposure scouring for submarine pipelines is pointed out and monitoring in time is suggested.

Abstract:Based on long-term systematic researches, the hydrodynamic conditions, sediment transport and riverbed evolvement of the Yangtze Estuary are compared and analyzed. According to the analyses, the North Channel is selution as the main deep-water navigation channel to the sea and is to be pre-trained, and the training principle of the Yangtze Estuary is determined. The first-and second-stoge training works for the deep-water channel in the Yangtze Estuary have produced good training effects and economic benefits.

Coconut Creek (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208. Numerical simulations were conducted where both local scour below pipelines and flow fields around pipelines occur. The evolution, shape, and scale of local scouring at pipelines under different flow velocities and pipeline layouts were calculated. The research area is Huibieyang Sea of Zhejiang, China, where large numbers of submarine pipelines have been laid. Results show that typical accumulations of sand waves cannot form behind the pipelines in this study area due to their fine sediment size. Data from field observations at the water depth where the pipelines are located were collected in this study, on the basis of which preliminary analysis was made on the stability of the seabed and local scouring in the research area in recent years.

Abstract:A better understanding of physical process of the fluid-seabed-structure interaction (FSSI) is beneficial for engineers involved in the design of marine infrastructures. Most previous studies for the problem of FSSI have considered wave-only conditions, despite the co-existence of wave and current in the real ocean environment. Unlike the previous studies, currents are included in the present study for the numerical modelling of FSSI, using an integrated FVM-FEM scheme, in which the VARANS equation is used to simulate fluid field, while Biot's poro-elastic model is used for porous flow in a seabed. Numerical examples show the important influences of currents on the local hydrodynamic process and the resulting dynamics of seabed foundation around a submerged rubble mound breakwater. The structure is relatively stable in the presence of counter-current waves, whereas the co-current waves would significantly compromise the instability of structure due to potential of shear failure and liquefaction in its sandy seabed foundation.
