Abstract:In order to study the purification effect of biological contact oxidation process on source water, the paper took different fillers as matrix to construct four biological contact oxidation ponds and conducted field experiment. The result showed that the mean removal rates of TP of the four biological contact oxida-tion ponds such as combined medium ( AM) , elastic medium ( EM) , SDF AquaMats ( SDFM) and BDF AquaMats (BDFM) are 59. 4%, 59. 4%, 44. 7% and 51. 9% respectively; the mean removal rates of NH4+ -N are 36. 5%, 33. 4%, 35. 0% and 36. 6% respectively; the mean removal rates of TN are 21. 6%, 18. 8%, 22. 3% and 18. 0% respectively. For organic matters, the mean removal rates of CODMn are 13. 9%, 13. 7%, 14. 5% and 13. 4% respectively; the mean removal rates of TOC are 10. 7%, 13. 6%, 13. 4% and 11. 5% respectively; the mean removal rates of UVA254 are 31. 1%, 34. 0%, 25. 3% and 26. 2% respectively; the mean removal rates of UVA410 are 54. 2%, 62. 0%, 47. 2% and 49. 3% respectively. Totally, the biological contact oxidation pond of combined medium has the best purification effect on nitrogen and phosphorus. The biological contact oxidation pond of elastic medium has the best purification effect on organic matter in raw water and followed by the biological con-tact oxidation pond of combined medium.

Abstract:There are small amount of persistent organic pollutants existed in water systems,and this does great harm to human beings and biology. It is necessary to remove these materials immediately. However,it is no use for the common water treatment technologies. As some new semi-conductor electrodes doped with additives were prepared,the electrochemical oxidation technology may efficiently oxidize persistent organic pollutants into CO_2 and H_2O under normal temperature and pressure thoroughly,and there are no extra pollutions produced. In this article,the developments of electrochemical oxidation technology on treating persistent organic pollutants were discussed,meantime,the electrochemical oxidation mechanisms and all kinds of influential factors were introduced,and the emphasis was placed on the structures and properties of electrodes.
Biological contact oxidation and an artificial floating island for black odorous river purification

Abstract:Due to destruction caused by urbanization and anthropogenic activities, various methods for treating black odorous rivers have been proposed. Herein, a treatment scheme was put forward for a black odorous river in Dongguan City, Guangdong Province. The river was treated using composite artificial floating island and improved biological contact oxidation processes as the core, supplemented by source control, substrate purification, and water ecosystem construction. The transparency, dissolved oxygen, ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), and total phosphorus (TP) of the water body met the China Surface Water Environmental Quality Standard (GB3838-2002) V. The oxidation–reduction potential was remarkably improved and the black odor phenomenon was eliminated. The composite artificial floating island had the highest TP removal rate of 38.30%, while the improved biological contact oxidation process had the highest NH3-N removal rate of 43.08%. The process is effective in improving the quality of black odorous rivers and has high applicability; thus, the process provides a reference for the treatment of other black odorous water bodies.

Abstract:Through the natural enrichment process of indigenous microorganisms,the test of dynamic start-up was studied by self-designed biological contact oxidation devices based on the urban polluted river waters.The changes of effects of major pollutants removal,the biofilm and biological phase,and the varies of SS,VSS in the filers were discussed;in addition,various factors which can affect biofilm colonization rate were analyzed.Finally,the judgment based on mature of biofilm was given.

Abstract:Organic pollution is a significant challenge in environmental protection, especially the discharge of refractory organic pollutants in chemical production and domestic use. The biological treatment method of traditional sewage treatment plants cannot degrade such pollutants, which leads to the continuous transfer of these pollutants into the water environment. Therefore, it is necessary to study clean and efficient advanced treatment technologies to degrade organic pollutants. The ozone/UV advanced oxidation process (O3/UV) has attracted extensive attention. This paper summarizes the reaction mechanism of O3/UV and analyzes its application progress in industrial wastewater, trace polluted organic matter and drinking water. The existing research results show that this technology has an excellent performance in the degradation of organic pollutants and has the characteristics of clean and environmental protection. In addition, the control of bromate formation and its economy is evaluated, and its operating characteristics and current application scope are summarized, which has a practical reference value for the follow-up in-depth study of the O3/UV process.

Abstract:Black and odorous water bodies are an extreme phenomenon that impair ecological integrity, adversely affect the lives of residents and the town's image, and cause unpleasant sensory experiences. Herein, we consider a black and smelly river in Heshan City, Guangdong Province, as a case study. The proposed comprehensive governance process combines the use of pollution control and interception, sediment remediation, aeration oxygenation, a high-efficiency biological contact oxidation/denitrification pond, and ecosystem construction. The project operation results showed that the combined process can effectively improve water quality. The water quality of the river improved to the Class V standard. All indicators met the requirements of the 'China Surface Water Environmental Quality Standard' (GB3838-2002). River water quality indicators, monitored for four months, revealed that water transparency and dissolved oxygen increased by 5.9 times and 24.5 times, respectively. Dichromate index (CODcr), total phosphorus (TP), and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) were reduced by 5.8, 4.17, and 5.17 times when compared to the values observed before treatment. The black-odor and eutrophication of the river were successfully eliminated, and the water quality improved significantly. In general, the combined process exhibits a high technical feasibility for implementation, providing a specific reference value for the treatment of black and odorous water bodies in urban settings.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance of a biofilter in which aeration process was not performed while adequate pure oxygen was dissolved into the influent before it was pumped to the biofilter.Two bio-ceramic filters were used in the experiment.The conventional aeration means was used in one bio-ceramic filter(BF-A) and raw water was pumped directly to the filter.At the same time,raw water was oversaturated by pure oxygen before it was pumped to another bio-ceramic filter(BF-B) and aeration was not performed in the filter.It was shown that dissolved oxygen in the influent of BF-B met the demand of microorganism in BF-B and the capability of BF-B to remove pollutants in raw water was superior to BF-A.This result indicated the significance of developing appropriate bubbleless aeration device fitting for oxygenation in biological treatment process of drinking water from the point of view of the biological treatment performance.

Abstract:The invention relates to a method for efficiently removing organic pollutants in industrial wastewater. The method comprises the following operations: introducing a gas mixture of O2 and O3 into an ozone contactor by adopting a bottom microporous aeration manner; while the gas mixture is introduced, injecting a to-be-treated water body into the ozone contactor, wherein hydraulic retention time is 10 to 20min, and outputting the water body immediately; in the hydraulic retention time, firstly energizing two ends of a negative electrode and two ends of a positive electrode, located at the bottom part of the ozone contactor, by direct current, and after energizing, irradiating the water body by ultraviolet in the remaining hydraulic retention time. According to the method provided by the invention, ultraviolet irradiation, ozonation and an electrochemical method are combined, and reasonable limiting is performed through the time of the ultraviolet irradiation, the ozonation and the electrochemical method to participate in reaction and concrete parameters, therefore the synergistic effect of all factors is realized; while the degradation rate of the organic pollutants in the water body is increased, the mineralization rate of the water body is obviously increased; the oxidation-reduction ability is high; organic carbon sources are not needed, so that the energy consumption is low.

Abstract:In this study two types of biological contact oxidation processes (BCOP), a step-feed (SBCOP) unit and an inter-recycle (IBCOP) unit, were designed to investigate the treatment of heavily polluted river water. The Daqing River, which is the largest pollutant contributor to the Dianchi Lake, one of the most eutrophic freshwater lakes in China, was taken for the case study. It was found that the SBCOP had higher adaptability and better performance in the reduction of COD, TN, and TP, which made it applicable for the treatment of polluted river water entering the Dianchi Lake. Nitrification rate was observed to be greatly affected by the influent temperature. During each season, the nitrification in the SBCOP was higher than that in the IBCOP. TN removal efficiency in the SBCOP was higher than that in the IBCOP during the winter and spring but poorer during the summer, possibly due to the inhibition of denitrification by higher dissolved oxygen level in the summer. Moreover, symbiotic algae-bacteria growth may be conducive to the removal of pollutants.

Abstract:A black-odor river water quality improvement project was conducted in Jiangmen City, Guangdong Province, China. A combination of sewage interception and source control, aeration and oxygenation, a biological contact oxidation tank, and the construction of aquatic ecosystems was used. To manage the irregular discharge of domestic sewage and high ammonia nitrogen content of the river, the traditional biological contact oxidation process was improved. A biological contact oxidation tank was constructed. High-efficiency ammonia nitrogen bacteriological agents were injected into the river for the management of river sewage. After four months of operation, this innovative process was stable and efficient with respect to the degradation of river pollutants. The transparency and dissolved oxygen content increased from 8.8 to 69.5 cm and 1.5 to 6.4 mg L −1 , respectively. The ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorus, and dichromate oxidizability concentrations decreased from 6.4 to 1.6, 0.67 to 0.30, and 101 to 31.7 mg L −1 , respectively. The black odor was removed from the river and the water quality indicators met the class V surface water standards after the project was completed. The new methodology is effective with respect to the management of black-odor waterbodies. The results of this study provide a reference for the treatment of black-odor rivers in cities.

Abstract:Assimible organic carbon(AOC)test was used to study the influence on the biological stability of drinking water by ozonation in a water works located in a certain petrochemical industrial area. The results showed that the concentration of AOC in raw water is 413 μg/L, it means that biological unstability exists apparently in the underground source water and the source water is polluted by local industry. The concentration of AOC increases sharply with ozonation and goes up to 3069 μg/L, however, it reduces to 257 μg/L by granular activated charcoal absorption, after disinfection by ozone it maintains at 258 μg/L. Through the treatment process the concentration of AOC can be decreased effectively, there still remains biological unstability in the effluent becouse of the high concentration of AOC in raw water.

Abstract:Advanced oxidation processes(AOPs),as new technologies in water treatment fields,are very popular in recent years.Especially,AOPS have the advantage in the treatment of difficultly degraded organics.The research process and mechanism for water treatment by advanced oxidation processes,such as Fenton and technologies on Fenton,photochemical oxidation and photocatalysis oxidation,ozone oxidation,electrochemical oxidation,wet air oxidation and catalytic wet air oxidation,supercritical water oxidation and supercritical catalytic water oxidation,are summarized in this paper.How to produce more ·OH radicals is one of the most radical issues in AOPs.Comprehensive analysis manifests that researching the oxidants of higher cost-efficient as well as the catalysts of more catalytic activity and sustainable are the main development trend in AOPs.In addition,it is necessary that technologies which combine AOPs and sound,light,electricity,magnet and so on will further not only enhance wastewater removal but also expand its space for research in wastewater fields.

Abstract:As a green advanced process for drinking water treatment, the UV/hydrogen peroxide (UV/H2O2) process has been gradually applied in China. To study the effect and mechanism of organic matter removal and the development of microbial communities in the UV/H2O2-biological activated carbon (UV/H2O2-BAC) process, a pilot-scale UV/H2O2-BAC system was built and operated over one year. Low water temperature affects the UV/H2O2 process efficiency, the biofilms in the BAC system were mature and stable after 240 days, and the contribution rate of BAC adsorption to dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal was approximately 14.2% after one year of operation. The liquid chromatography-organic carbon detection (LC-OCD) analysis shows that UV/H2O2 process can increase the amounts of Low Molecular Weight (LMW) neutrals, and the specific UV absorbance (SUVA254) value is not suitable for predicting Trihalomethanes (THMs) precursor contents in water after UV/H2O2 treatment. High-throughput sequencing results prove that microbial species in the middle section are the most abundant compared to those in the influent and effluent sections, hydrogen peroxide has lower inhibition on the development of microbial community than ozone and the low concentration of hydrogen peroxide (<0.25 mg/L) promotes the development of the microbial communities, hydrogen peroxide can reduce Proteobacteria abundance by inhibiting the growth of anaerobes. Acidobacteria may have a certain contribution to the degradation of soil organic matter (SOM), and the effluent section of BAC with low DOC concentration cannot form the dominant species of Rhodobacter.

Abstract:The occurrence of seasonal algae blooms represents a huge dilemma for water resource management and has garnered widespread attention. Therefore, finding methods to control algae pollution and improve water quality is urgently needed. Moderate oxidation has emerged as a feasible way of algae-laden water treatment and is an economical and prospective strategy for controlling algae and endogenous and exogenous pollutants. Despite this, a comprehensive understanding of algae-laden water treatment by moderate oxidation, particularly principles and summary of advanced strategies, as well as challenges in moderate oxidation application, is still lacking. This review outlines the properties and characterization of algae-laden water, which serve as a prerequisite for assessing the treatment efficiency of moderate oxidation. Biomass, cell viability, and organic matter are key components to assessing moderate oxidation performance. More importantly, the recent advancements in employing moderate oxidation as a treatment or pretreatment procedure were examined, and the suitability of different techniques was evaluated. Generally, moderate oxidation is more promising for improving the solid-liquid separation process by the reduction of cell surface charge (stability) and removal/degradation of the soluble algae secretions. Furthermore, this review presents an outlook on future research directions aimed at overcoming the challenges encountered by existing moderate oxidation technologies. This comprehensive examination aims to provide new and valuable insights into the moderate oxidation process.

Abstract:Conventional activated sludge(CAS) and Anaerobic/Anoxic/Oxic/Anoxic-Membrane bioreactor(A/A/O/A-MBR) process were applied respectively in the first and the second project of a municipal sewage treatment plant in wuxi,and the bio-treated effluent of the different process was treated by ozonation.The batch test method was used.Ozone adding dosage was controlled by adjusting the ozone reacting time.The results show that ozone has a higher removal efficiency of the total bacterial count,the total coliform groups,TOC,UV254 and color in both of bio-treated efflent.The removal rate reach 52.5%,68.5%,99.7%,99.8% and 64.2%,96.4%,99.8%,100%,respectively.The results of 3D fluorescence spectra show that the main organic substances of the different effluent in the plant were protein substances and humic substances,and the fluorescence intensity weakened gradually as the ozone reacting time was extended.Ozone could significantly remove the organic substance.
