Abstract:Before and after the Reform Movement of 1898,Zhang Zhidong had established multiple links with the Japanese government,military and civilian bodies.After the 1900 War,he actively used these established channels to seek Japanese support for the Mutual Defense of the Southeast and for negotiations during the hostilities.When the Eight-Nation Allied Forces approached Beijing,Zhang hoped that Japan could help China arrange a truce and a negotiated peace and protect the Court.An examination of Zhang''s negotiations with Japan shows the complexity of the history of the period and provides us with a better understanding of Sino-Japanese relations.In addition,it also shows Zhang''s difficult circumstances and complex psychology.

Abstract:As an important local governor,Zhang Zhidong's relationship with Japan is an issue which requires deeply study.During the boxer year,Zhang Zhidong used multiple channels of contact with Japan which established since the year of 1895,and actively promoted the commencement of negotiations with Japan.The facts that Zhang's son and grandson's studying in Japan,the recruiting of Japanese military officer,dispatching people to Japan to study military situation,and buying military equipment from Japan had proved the special relationship between Hubei and Japan.But all the above could not prove that Zhang had the ambition of betraying the court.And the so-called "emperor dream" of Zhang Zhidong which proposed by Kong Xiangji could not be tenable.

Abstract:In 1938,the Zhejiang Provincial Government terminated the monthly subsidy(10,000) to Zhejiang University.Zhu Kezhen,the President of the university,requested for the continuation of the grant from the Education Ministry directly.Meanwhile,Zhu wrote to his intimate friend,Zhu Jiahua,seeking his help for mediation.At the end of 1939,Zhu requested for fund from the Education Ministry to support the relocation of Zhejiang University to Guizhou Province.Zhu Kezhen turned to Zhu Jiahua for help to mediate,and finally,Zhejing University successfully got the allocation fee 60,000 from the ministry.At the end of 1944,for the sake of purchasing arms for the university self-defense organization,Zhu Kezhen wrote again to Zhu Jiahua,who was the Minister of Education,for financial support.This paper investigates the Zhe Kezhen’s several correspondences,could bring new insights into the studies both in Zhu Kezhen himself and the history of Zhejiang University,and even the history of higher education during the Republican period.
China’s mediated public diplomacy towards Japan: a text-as-data approach

Abstract:As a rising power, China has realized that it is an urgent task to improve its national image among foreign publics. In the era of Xi Jinping, China has invested a substantial amount of resources in its foreign-language media to present a more favorable national image to an international audience. This study provides a novel approach to examine the content of China’s Japanese-language media and its dissemination. The study found that the Chinese state media promotes China’s soft power using two main strategies: (1) highlighting China’s culture and economic achievements, and (2) providing positive stories of China. A comparative content analysis of Chinese and Japanese media shows that Chinese media’s narratives are not well circulated in Japan’s public opinion field. This study has both substantive and methodological significance. Substantively, this investigation enhances our understanding of China’s strategic use of state-owned media for public diplomacy. Methodologically, this research contributes to the employment of quantitative text analysis methods on Japanese-language data.

Abstract:Since the outbreak of COVID-19, China and Japan have fought against the epidemic through high-level contacts, donation and so on. The Chinese proverb “mountains and rivers on foreign land, wind and moon under the same sky” gave warmth of friendship to the bilateral relations. However, since Yoshihide Suga won the election, the Sino-Japanese relations have taken a worsening turn. The current Prime Minister Fumio Kishida further takes counterbalancing China as top priority. The “anti-COVID-19 diplomacy” in 2020 had very limited improvement on Sino-Japanese relations. It is clear that since the implementation of the U.S. strategic competition policy against China, Japan, without hesitation, turns to the “national interest theory” and “international contribution theory” by positioning to counterbalance China. Japan has become one of the few Asian countries that have completely sided with US in the China–US strategic competition. Since the normalization of Sino-Japanese relations, the principle of “good-neighborhood” has been totally replaced by the seemingly determined approach of “counterbalance” proposed by Japanese politicians. Japan has gone beyond the issue of its neighboring areas, trying to assist the United States’ strategic containment of China, which has added a new variable to China’s neighboring diplomacy.
The Evolution of Political Thought in Japan and Its Impact on Sino-Japanese Relations

Abstract:The profound change of political thought in Japan is the key factor that affects the Sino-Japanese political relations at the beginning of the 21st century. Since the end of the Cold War, the politically rightward tendency in Japan, coupled with the rise of strong nationalism, has set back Japan's policy toward China. During Koizumi's reign, the decision-making mechanism in Japan had been excessively tempered by the Prime Minister himself, thus intensifying the contradiction between China and Japan, as well as alarming the Japanese society in general and insightful figures in particular. Abe Shinzo entered the political arena in such a context, not only affected by the trend of political thought, but also witnessing the damage done to Japan's internal politics and foreign policies by this very trend. After his election to become the Prime Minister, Abe has to think of getting rid of the aftermath of Koizumi's foreign policy and improve Japan's relations with China. Once the politically rightward tendency is somewhat checked, the Sino-Japanese political relations are likely to improve. In turn, the improved Sino-Japanese political relations would further check Japan's politically rightward tendency. However, if such a tendency rears its ugly head once again, the Sino-Japanese political relations would inevitably suffer setbacks.

Abstract:This thesis analyzes Japan's comprehensive development since World War II, and the trend of Japan's economic, political, military, and diplomatic strategy at the start of the 21st century. Based on this analysis, certain predictions are made. The challenges to Sino-Japanese relations resulting from economics and trade, political Right-deviationism in Japan, the influence of public opinion on bilateral relations, the American element, and the Taiwan issue are reviewed. In recent years Sino-Japanese political relations have deteriorated as the Japanese government has carried out a great-power policy featuring Right-deviationism. The current situation features cool political relations in a period of high economic and trade relationships. Economic relations must be curbed while political relations are being cooled to a certain extent. This requires that both China and Japan make joint efforts to improve long-term bilateral relations.
Anti-Japanese Sentiment among Chinese University Students: The Influence of Contemporary Nationalist Propaganda

Abstract:This study looks at the sources of anti-Japanese sentiment in today's China. Using original survey data collected in June 2014 from 1,458 students at three elite universities in Beijing, we quantitatively investigate which factors are associated with stronger anti-Japanese sentiment among elite university students. In particular, we examine the link between the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)'s nationalist propaganda (especially patriotic education) and university students’ anti-Japanese sentiment. We find that nationalist propaganda does indeed have a significant effect on negative sentiment towards Japan. Reliance on state-sanctioned textbooks for information about Japan, visiting museums and memorials or watching television programmes and movies relating to the War of Resistance against Japan are all associated with higher levels of anti-Japanese sentiment. The findings suggest the effectiveness of nationalist propaganda in promoting anti-Japanese sentiment. We also find that alternative sources of information, especially personal contact with Japan, can mitigate anti-Japanese sentiment. Thus, visiting Japan and knowing Japanese people in person can potentially offset some of the influences of nationalist propaganda.

Abstract:On the conferences held by the Institute of Pacific Relations from 1929 to 1933, Japan Institute of Pacific Relations defended the Japanese aggression against Northeast China with the arguments such as Japan's right to exist, Japan's special interests in Manchuria, Japan's right of self-defence, the need to prevent Russia's expansion to the East and the need to find a way out for Japan's overpopulation. At the same time, Japan Institute of Pacific Relations launched an unbridled anti-China propaganda, denying China's sovereignty in Manchuria and claiming that China was not a modern sovereign state. The stand of Japan Institute of Pacific Relations was identical to that of the Japanese government. As a result, Japan Institute of Pacific Relations changed into a propaganda instrument of its government.

Abstract:Research on Sino-Japanese Relations is an important part of the field of Japanese Studies in China. This article offers an overview of research on Sino-Japanese relations over 60 years of PRC history. It focuses on research since the end of the ColdWar, and especially on progress in the field since the beginning of the twenty-first century. On the basis of this overview, the author discusses gaps in the literature and directions for future research. The author would also like to express in advance his regret that due to limited space it is not possible to mention every piece of important scholarship in the field.

Abstract:In recent history, Suzuki Daisetsu’s Zen to Nihon bunka and Hisamatsu Shin’ichi’s Zen to bijutsu have defined the East Asian cultural complex as ‘Zen.’ However, the basic characteristics they attributed to ‘Zen’ may not be able to be associated with Zen 禪 (Ch. Chan) in history. From a historical perspective, the specific examples of artworks and performing arts, such as the paintings from Song-Yuan China and Japanese Nō performances, cannot be regarded as Zen. Suzuki also stated that ‘Zen’ is equivalent to ‘Japanese culture,’ a statement which lacks historical validity. At the same time, he used the concepts of ‘Japan’ and ‘the East’ to study the Chinese-made artworks he quoted as examples, making his arguments ambiguous and self-contradictory. On the other hand, although Hisamatsu’s arguments were more aligned with facts when he saw China, Korea and Japan as three distinct geographic entities, he also exhibited a tendency to associate the cultures that match his preferences with ‘Zen.’ Thus, it is hard to view his arguments from an academic perspective. Nevertheless, both works have served as primers through which readers can understand Zen and East Asian culture. Therefore, nowadays we must discuss their arguments from an academic standpoint and offer objective critiques of their arguments.

Abstract:The quantity and quality of Japanese political studies in China are influenced by political developments in China and Japan, Sino-Japanese relations, and academic development of political science. After the collapse of Japan's bubble economy and the end of the LDP's long rule in the early 1990s, many Chinese scholars diverted their attention from economic issues and took more interest in Japanese political studies. Political issues such as the resurgence of nationalism, the rise of right-wing forces, the end of the '1955 system', the political origin of long and heavy recessions, the 'normal state', national strategy, and foreign policies have been discussed and debated. New approaches and perspectives such as the political pluralist approach, the new institutional approach, the ecological approach and the political process approach have been used. It is imperative to overcome the institutional, political, and financial problems in order to improve the state and raise the quality of Japanese political studies in China.

Rumor and Diplomacy:A Preliminary Exploration of the Rumor of "Direct Negotiation between China and Japan on the Shandong Issue" before the Washington Conference

Abstract:On the eve of the 1921 Washington Conference (formally known as the International Conference on Naval Limitation), there were rumors about "direct negotiation between China and Japan on the Shandong issue," implying that Beijing intended to negotiate directly with Japan. The fact that the Chinese and Japanese governments had initially entered into communication via private intermediaries served both as the source of the rumor and as a piece of evidence for Beijing's successful refutation of the rumor. The process of refutation involved a clash between the pragmatism of government diplomacy and the idealism of citizen diplomacy. Using the principle of open diplomacy and his "personal network" of elite public opinion, the foreign minister Yan Huiqing successfully guided public opinion. In so doing, he saved the Beijing government from the passive state it had fallen into as a result of the issue of direct negotiation, and made skilful use of public opinion as a support for official diplomacy. He was thus able to throw off Japan's strong demands for direct negotiation and to pass the issue to the Washington Conference for discussion.
