Abstract:Started with the urban problems brought by the skyscrapers, this paper brings forward that the key that a skyscraper come to the top is the well-handled relationship with the urban space. Study emphases of this paper are the relationship between skyscraper and urban space, this paper analyses the interaction between them from four aspects such as urban spatial structure, urban spatial landscape, urban spatial function and urban spatial environment. Abstract:In the past,the cognition of urban space was carried out mainly from the different aspects of the physical dimension.However,with the development of digital technology,the virtual dimension has also become an important perspective of spatial cognition in the field of urban planning,and the evolution of technology has an effect on the virtual-physical relationship of urban space.Based on the analysis and comparison on the characteristics of different digital technologies and the characteristics of space under the influence of them,this paper points out that the virtual-physical space has emerged due to the changes of XR technology in the contents and methods of interaction,and the virtual-physical space is characterized by visibility,three-dimensional sense of space,and real-time interaction with the physical environment.The paper further analyzes the different virtual-physical relationships of urban space under the influence of digital technology,including the transfer of physical space to virtual space,the extension of virtual space in physical space,the supplement of virtualphysical space to virtual space,and the coordination of physical space to virtual-physical space.Among them,the virtual-physical space has an impact on regional connection and urban public space.The virtual-physical relationship of future urban space will put forward new requirements for the urban planning and design:the dual attributes of urban space as both virtual and physical space will bring dual requirements to planners,and the interaction between the virtual and physical urban space will change the urban planning and design process.As the impact deepens,it is necessary to discuss how to protect the physical space and standardize the design,storage,and use of virtual space and virtualphysical space,and to pay attention to the changes in social relations and socio-economic development.

Abstract:Urban spatial structure change is one of the most important parts of urban features, it comes from the process of the urbanization and has both inner filling and outward expansion. Under the support of high resolution remote sensing images and geographic information system (GIS), this article analyzes the urban spatial structure changes in the built-up area of Shijiazhuang city from 1994 to 2003. These analyses focus on the aspect of the urban land types and its area, the value of urban land assets and the density of land assets and its change rate, the various types of building area and the building floor area ratio (FAR), the urban population size(PS) and population density(PD) and its change rates. The study discloses the laws of urban spatial structure evolution in order to compile the master urban planning and administrate urban construction.

Abstract:It is very important to integrate remote sensing with urban geography that the spectral mixture analysis technique is applied to urban land cover evolvement and its eco-environmental effect. Urban land cover is mainly composed of complicated artificial materials, which is the key factor to limit the development of the spectral mixture analysis technique. There are two main aspects in which the technique of spectral mixture analysis is applied to urban geography: one is to calculate vegetation fraction; the other is to build quantitative model of the urban impervious surface obtained from the combination between high albedo fraction and low albedo fraction. The technique of spectral mixture analysis is firstly applied to study urban renewal pattern, scale and mode which happened in Shanghai City from 1997 to 2000.

Abstract:Environment and Planning B: Urban Analytics and City Science, Ahead of Print. The skyline is a comprehensive display of the morphological characteristics and cultural features of a city, and its quantitative evaluation is remarkable for perceiving the city and assisting in its planning. However, previous studies focused on the overall profile or tall buildings, lacking a perspective that considers the composition of skyline objects. This paper proposes a new quantitative method to evaluate the skyline based on the object-based analysis method and the constitution theory. Firstly, the skyline objects, that is, buildings, vegetation and mountains are extracted by using the object-based image analysis method. Secondly, the buildings are further classified into four classes according to their relative height. Then, two quantitative indicators, namely, richness of the object category variety and complexity of the object category spatial distribution, are proposed by considering the constitution theory. Finally, this method is applied to typical urban skylines in Shanghai, Hong Kong, New York and Vancouver. Results show that the new indicators can effectively represent the differences of city skylines when their profile indicators are relatively similar. The method can quantitatively evaluate the composition and spatial distribution of skyline objects. This paper is expected to provide a new perspective on the study of skyline aesthetics.

Abstract:Newly-built high-rise buildings exert an unneglectable influence on the original urban outer spatial form. The visual preference evaluation of this influence can be taken as a key reference factor for the evaluation of public acceptance in the course of urban modernization. This paper sets two representative buildings of Shanghai as the research objects: The Oriental Pearl Radio & TV Tower, serving as the original urban landmark, and Shanghai Tower, representing the newly-built high-rise building. Relative height ratio, relative mass ratio, and relative distance ratio of the two buildings at different viewpoints are set as the physical properties. Eight key observation sites were selected as the viewpoints where photos of the two buildings were taken. Then, photo stimulation experiments were conducted with participants and the results were analyzed. The analytical results indicate that newly-built high-rise buildings exert certain influence not only on the urban outer spatial form centering around original urban landmarks, but on the potential change of urban viewpoints as well. The value ranges of relevant physical properties are also influential to visual preference evaluation. Height ratio (0.75, 1.00) and (1.50, 1.71), mass ratio (0.75, 1.10), and distance ratio (0.60, 0.78), the visual preference evaluation would be scored comparatively higher.

Abstract:As spatial and socioeconomic processes are the two key aspects of urban development, revealing the relationship between these two key aspects is critical. Previous studies attempted to explain their correlation at the city or region level using built-up area metrics and nighttime light (NTL) data. However, more comprehensive studies on urban interior spatial characteristics and their relationship to NTL intensity are lacking in a three-dimension space. Using Luojia 1-01 nighttime light data, LiDAR digital surface model data, and other auxiliary data, this study applies an extreme gradient boosting regression model and Sharpley Additive exPlanations method to model and interpret the relationship between two-dimensional (2-D)3-D landscape patterns and NTL intensity. Two study areas were selected to investigate the landscapeNTL relationship at the parcel and subdistrict levels. The major findings of this study include the following: 1) 2-D and 3-D urban landscape patterns have a close relationship with NTL intensity at the parcel and subdistrict scales; 2) the combinational metric of 2-D and 3-D landscape patterns has a stronger relationship with NTL intensity than either the 2-D or 3-D landscape metrics alone; 3) the correlations between most landscape metrics and NTL intensity are not simply positive or negative but change as metrics grow; and 4) the urban socioeconomic level is not only related to a single landscape metric sometimes but tends to the result of metrics interaction. These findings may help urban planners and government officials make more reasonable urban landscape planning policies under the goal of sustainable development.
