A Knowledge Mapping Analysis on Curriculum System of Recreation Studies in USA

Abstract:A knowledge mapping analysis was adopted in the present study to investigate the curriculum systems of undergraduate recreation programs in 81 American universities. The knowledge framework of recreation education in USA was outlined via analyzing its knowledge category and problem domain. The results reveal that recreation,leisure,tourism and sports comprise the core bodies of recreation curriculum in USA. Specifically,recreation studies mainly focus on eight branches including therapeutic recreation,inclusive recreation,community recreation, nonprofit recreation,resources and environment,outdoor recreation,park recreation,and commercial recreation,through which it is interconnected with the rest three bodies. The relationship among recreation,tourism and leisure was reinterpreted based on the previous analysis. A generalized recreation includes tourism: the differentiation between them lies in the commercial nature of tourism and the similarity in the space of natural tourism sites. The difference between recreation and leisure is mainly centered on the extent to which theory and practice are emphasized; while a common focus on vulnerable social groups comprises their common point. The paper also pointed out that the curriculum systems of recreation studies in USA can enlighten the development of recreation education in China.
