Abstract:In cities with a "ring+radiations" road network structure, a three Branch intersection is formed at the connection between the inner ring and radiations. Common three branch interchanges include T-shaped, Y-shaped, trumpet shaped, leaf shaped, pear shaped interchanges, etc. Shenyang City plans a "two verticals and three horizontals+four rings+seventeen radiations" urban expressway network. This article takes the three-branch intersection formed by Chongshan Road, Tawan Street, and Yuanjiang Street in Shenyang City as an example to analyze its traffic characteristics and predict traffic demand. Based on this, three interchange selection schemes are proposed, and recommended schemes are obtained through multi angle comparison. This article provides ideas for the selection of three branch interchanges. In addition, because this project is located in the built-up area and the surrounding land is tight, this article also explores the problems and solutions of the overpass renovation in the built-up area, providing reference for similar projects.

Abstract:Through the investigation of the traffic control issues on the urban freeway, several traffic control modes such as on-ramp control, network routing control and speed limit control are discussed as well as corresponding control theory research methods. According to control views, these modes involve the research methods of linear planning, optimum control, dispersion control, fuzzy control and neuron network control, and so on. Some advice is presented for future study.

Abstract:This paper made a description of mixed-traffic phenomenon in china briefly.It summarized the research development worldwide.Characteristics of both bicycle and pedestrian crossing intersection were analyzed,including arrival and departure procedure.The problem of vehicle and non-vehicle collision was studied,and an effective resolve method was worked out for it.Finally,the calculation for mixed-traffic integrated volume rate was researched,and the coefficients of bicycle for different circumstance are given out.

Abstract:Under the condition of open boundary, it proposes a new model which is based on the improved two-way two-lane cellular automaton traffic flow model. It is a T intersection traffic flow model which consists of two independent running main roads and two cross by-roads which allow overtaking. The running forward vehicles runs by the NS rules. It simulates the fundamental traffic flow diagrams of every lanes under the condition of different injection probability to the main roads and by-roads. The simulation results show that the existence of intersection has an effect on the traffic flow of both main roads and by-roads, when the probability of the critical value is different, the influence which the main roads have to the traffic flow of the by-roads is stronger than the by-roads to the traffic flow of main road.

Abstract:Effectively managed mobile,bicycle and pedestrians mixed traffic flow at signalized intersection is a key to traffic management in China.This paper analyzes bicycle and pedestrian's arrival and departure characteristics at signalized intersection using statistics method based on traffic investigation,establishes bicycle and pedestrian's arrival models at intersections,calibrates the bicycle's departure saturation flow,departure speed and pedestrian's velocity.This paper also analyzed why mixed traffic flow have these characteristics.We can apply the results to traffic control and management.
Study on transfer functions model of urban traffic flow at intersection

Abstract:A general model structure is proposed to describe urban traffic flow in order to study the dynamic characteristics of the traffic flow.Some typical dynamic units are presented to describe the traffic flow of an intersection,which are the representation of the road network traffic flow.The study is carried out by means of simulation experiments.In order to get the input/output data of the simulated traffic flow under different conditions,many different simulation experiments are designed.Using the input/ output data,the transfer functions model of the traffic flow at intersection is put forward based on the methods of system identification.The research shows that the transfer functions of the cycle control channels are three-order systems;the transfer functions of the split control channels are two-order systems.The transfer functions model can describe the states of traffic flow of an intersection,and it can be used to study the dynamic characteristics of the traffic flow.

Abstract:Urban large-scale traffic congestion is often formed from the individual intersection's traffic jam. According to the characteristics of these intersections, this paper presents the conception of traffic bottleneck. To prevent bottleneck intersection's queuing back,this paper analysis bottleneck control strategy and its trigger conditions, and presents traffic bottleneck control strategy in single and coordination situation,then conceives single bottleneck control model and coordination bottleneck control model. At last, we prove the control effect of single bottleneck control model in practice. © 2009 IEEE.

Abstract:Along with the rapid development of urban social economy, under the influence of sustainable development strategy, urban road traffic engineering design should adhere to the concept of environmental protection and develop towards greening and modernization. Firstly, this method uses the green environmental construction materials, such as hot-melt reflective marking paint, color asphalt concrete pavement and polyurethane elastic isolation column, to build green traffic spaces at intersection; Then on this basis, the motor vehicles signal optimization technology is used to balance the space-time resource allocation of the motor vehicle traffic flow, motor vehicle traffic optimal phase combination analysis method is put forward, and the optimal calculation of motor vehicle traffic time is optimized by the signal timing optimization method that considers the overlapping phase. Finally, through the evaluation and analysis of the VISSIM traffic simulation software, the results show that the method based on green building materials has effectively defined about the green traffic spaces of motor vehicles, and under this premise, the efficiency of motor vehicle traffic is further improved by signal optimization technology, providing the foundation for the research on green traffic on urban roads.

Abstract:Motorcycle bans have been implemented in many cities across China for long time, one of the main reasons for which is the high death rate of the traffic accidents related to motorcycles’ fast speed and weak safety. This study applies a quasi-experiment on whether or not and when motorcycle bans are implemented in the 11 prefecture cities in Zhejiang Province, taking the prefecture-level cities with motorcycle bans as the experimental group and the others as the control group, so as to identify whether such bans can effectively reduce the number of traffic accidents and deaths, as well as the related internal mechanism. This study concludes that the effect of the motorcycle bans on reducing the number of traffic accident deaths is significant, and their impact does not decrease over time due to the diversity of policies. Further, the mechanism analysis shows that the motorcycle bans have not only reduced the number of motorcycles and thus may improve the traffic safety but also diminished the traffic accidents by reducing the fatality rate. Finally, this study proposes to optimize the motorcycle bans by planning special lanes and strengthening motorcycle management.

Abstract:Nowadays, with the advancement of technology, world is trending toward high mobility and dynamics. In this context, intersection management (IM) as one of the most crucial elements of the transportation sector demands high attention. Today, road entities including infrastructures, vulnerable road users (VRUs) such as motorcycles, moped, scooters, pedestrians, bicycles, and other types of vehicles such as trucks, buses, cars, emergency vehicles, and railway vehicles like trains or trams are able to communicate cooperatively using vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications and provide traffic safety, efficiency, infotainment and ecological improvements. In this paper, we take into account different types of intersections in terms of signalized, semi-autonomous (hybrid) and autonomous intersections and conduct a comprehensive survey on various intersection management methods for heterogeneous connected vehicles (CVs). We consider heterogeneous classes of vehicles such as road and rail vehicles as well as VRUs including bicycles, scooters and motorcycles. All kinds of intersection goals, modeling, coordination architectures, scheduling policies are thoroughly discussed. Signalized and semi-autonomous intersections are assessed with respect to these parameters. We especially focus on autonomous intersection management (AIM) and categorize this section based on four major goals involving safety, efficiency, infotainment and environment. Each intersection goal provides an in-depth investigation on the corresponding literature from the aforementioned perspectives. Moreover, robustness and resiliency of IM are explored from diverse points of view encompassing sensors, information management and sharing, planning universal scheme, heterogeneous collaboration, vehicle classification, quality measurement, external factors, intersection types, localization faults, communication anomalies and channel optimization, synchronization, vehicle dynamics and model mismatch, model uncertainties, recovery, security and privacy.

Abstract:A motorized-vehicle conflict model based on conflict point is presented to reflect the practical vehicle action process check-judge-act by establishing right-to-pass systems of both querying by vehicle and judging by conflict point.The model is also expanded to fit the mixed traffic circumstance.The above model has been applied in a traffic simulation software and it is proved effective both qualitatively and quantitatively by running the software in several specific scenes.
Motorcyclists violating hook-turn area at intersections in Taiwan: an observational study

Abstract:Research has suggested that the most typical and catastrophic automobile-motorcycle crash takes place when an automobile manoeuvres into the path of an oncoming motorcycle at intersection, which involves a motorist infringing upon the motorcycle's right of way (ROW). In Taiwan, motorcycles, on the other hand, are the one that has been observed to violate the ROW of approaching automobiles at intersections. Such a ROW-violation by left-turn motorcyclists in front of approaching traffic is a safety problem in terms of its frequency and accident consequence. Using high-definition video cameras to capture motorcycles' behaviours, the present study empirically analyses the determinants of motorcyclists violating the hook-turn area (HTA) that has been implemented in Taiwan to deter motorcyclists from violating the ROW of approaching vehicles. Mixed (random parameters) logit models are found to be superior in fitting the data to traditional binary logit models. Main findings include that there was an increased likelihood of HTA-violation at T/Y intersections, in rural areas, during non rush hours, when the riders were females, younger, when riders were travelling on mopeds or heavier motorcycles, when traffic volume was less, and when riders were with half-style helmets. Implications of the research findings, the concluding remarks, and recommendations for future research are finally provided.

Abstract:One of the most critical problems of urban areas is the increasing transportation demand. Traffic that exists on urban streets is aggravating other problems, such as environmental pollution, unrestrained energy consumption, and increased traffic accidents. In China, urban passenger movement is composed primarily of buses for public transportation and bicycles for private transportation. Bicycles are a primary transportation mode in most cities and will continue to play an important role in the future. The mix, though, of bus vehicle and bicycle operation on city streets is the largest contributor to urban traffic congestion. To lessen congestion, the authors propose an improved signal system for urban roads to make the most effective use of the network. Characteristics of bicycle traffic in Beijing are studied and the influence of bicycle traffic on traffic control is analyzed. A traffic survey is conducted for a typical signalized intersection, and an actual situation of bicycle flow passing through a signalized intersection is studied. In addition, influence factors having to do with traffic control design are demonstrated and alternative traffic control planning is discussed.
Macroscopic analysis and modelling of multi-class, flexible-lane traffic

Abstract:An excessive demand of vehicles to a motorway bottleneck leads to traffic jams. Motorbikes are narrow and can drive next to each other in a lane, or in-between lanes in low speeds. This paper analyses the resulting traffic characteristics and presents numerical scheme for a macroscopic traffic flow model for these two classes. The behavior included is as follows. If there are two motorbikes behind each other, they can travel next to each other in one lane, occupying the space of one car. Also, at low speeds of car traffic, they can go in between the main lanes, creating a so-called filtering lane. The paper numerically derives functions of class-specific speeds as function of the density of both classes, incorporating flexible lane usage dependent on the speed. The roadway capacity as function of the motorbike fraction is derived, which interesting can be in different types of phases (with motorbikes at higher speeds or not). We also present a numerical scheme to analyse the dynamics of this multi-class system. We apply the model to an example case, revealing the properties of the traffic stream , queue dynamics and class specific travel times. The model can help in showing the relative advantage in travel time of switching to a motorbike.

Abstract:Modern urban traffic management depends heavily on the efficiency of road features, such as controlled intersections and multi-lane roundabouts. Vehicle throughput at any such configuration is modified by traffic mix, by rules governing manoeuvrability and by driver observance, as well as by traffic density. Here, we study heterogeneous traffic flow on two-lane roads through a cellular automata model for a binary mix of long and short vehicles. Throughput is investigated for a range of arrival rates and for fixed turning rate at an intersection: manoeuvres, while described in terms of left-lane driving, are completely generalisable. For a given heterogeneous distribution of vehicle type, there is a significant impact on queue length, delay times experienced and throughput at a fixed-cycle traffic light controlled two-way intersection and two-lane roundabout, when compared to the homogeneous case. As the proportion of long vehicles increases, average throughput for both configurations declines for increasing arrival rate, with average queue length and waiting time correspondingly increased. The effect is less-marked for the two-lane roundabout, due to absence of cross-traffic delays. Nevertheless, average waiting times and queue lengths remain uniformly high for arrival rates >0.25 vehicle per second (900 vph) on entry roads and for long vehicle proportion above 0.30–0.35.

Abstract:Intersection is a major source of traffic delays and accidents within modern transportation systems. Compared to signalized intersection management, autonomous intersection management (AIM) coordinates the intersection crossing at an individual vehicle level with additional flexibility. AIM can potentially eliminate stopping in intersection crossing due to traffic lights while maintaining a safe separation among conflicting movements. In this paper, the state-of-the-art AIM research among various disciplines (e.g., traffic engineering, control engineering) is surveyed from the perspective of three hierarchical layers: corridor coordination layer, intersection management layer, and vehicle control layer. The key aspects of AIM designs are discussed in details, including conflict detection schemes, priority rules, control centralization, computation complexity, etc. The potential improvements for AIM evaluation with the emphasis of realistic scenarios are provided. This survey serves as a comprehensive review of AIM design and provides promising directions for future research.

Abstract:A large number of motor vehicles and non-motorized vehicles mixed in the section of arterial highway crossing the town leads to many traffic problems. Therefore, it is necessary to set up a side divider between motorized and non-motorized lanes, and the appropriate spacing of lateral crossing openings to meet the needs of non-motorized vehicles crossing the highway has become a key issue that must be resolved. This paper investigates the traffic flow characteristics of mixed traffic flow on arterial highways through small town sections, and from the two dimensions of highway access efficiency and the psychological characteristics of cyclists, it calibrates the setting range of the spacing of non-motorized lateral crossing openings under different design speeds, which is used to regulate the behavior of non-motorized vehicles crossing the street, improve the safety level of the highway, reduce the lateral interference of the highway, and improve the road access efficiency. The accuracy of the research results is verified by microscopic simulation experiments, which proves that they can meet good expectations in practical engineering. The research results have theoretical significance and reference value for improving the status quo of machine-non-mixed traffic in the section of arterial highway passing through small towns, and enhancing the efficiency and safety of highway traffic. It also provides corresponding reference for the areas facing similar problems worldwide.

Abstract:Intersection management is one of the most challenging problems within the transport system. Traffic light-based methods have been efficient but are not able to deal with the growing mobility and social challenges. On the other hand, the advancements of automation and communications have enabled cooperative intersection management, where road users, infrastructure, and traffic control centers are able to communicate and coordinate the traffic safely and efficiently. Major techniques and solutions for cooperative intersections are surveyed in this paper for both signalized and nonsignalized intersections, whereas focuses are put on the latter. Cooperative methods, including time slots and space reservation, trajectory planning, and virtual traffic lights, are discussed in detail. Vehicle collision warning and avoidance methods are discussed to deal with uncertainties. Concerning vulnerable road users, pedestrian collision avoidance methods are discussed. In addition, an introduction to major projects related to cooperative intersection management is presented. A further discussion of the presented works is given with highlights of future research topics. This paper serves as a comprehensive survey of the field, aiming at stimulating new methods and accelerating the advancement of automated and cooperative intersections.

Abstract:China is in a fast growing stage of urbanization and mobility development. The urbanization level of China increased from 36.09% in 2000 to 42.99% in 2005. The growth of vehicle numbers is also quite striking. It took almost half a century to reach the first one million vehicles in Beijing. Six and a half years passed before Beijing jumped to a city of two million vehicles, and 3.75 years later, on May 26th, 2007, Beijing confronted three million vehicles. Urban sprawl and motorization in big cities causes social problems, such as traffic congestion, air and water pollution, energy problems, etc. This situation should be understood and taken into concern in the transportation policy. This paper expresses and analyzes the mobility development process in big cities in China, taking Beijing as an example. The evolution of transportation policy is described. Both transportation demand management and infrastructure contraction should be considered simultaneously in the policy.
