Abstract:The energy leakage is an inherent deficiency of discrete wavelet transform (DWT) which is often ignored by researchers and practitioners. In this paper, a systematic investigation into the energy leakage is reported. The DWT is briefly introduced first, and then the energy leakage phenomenon is described using a numerical example as an illustration and its effect on the DWT results is discussed. Focusing on the Daubechies wavelet functions, the band overlap between the quadrature mirror analysis filters was studied and the results reveal that there is an unavoidable tradeoff between the band overlap degree and the time resolution for the DWT. The dependency of the energy leakage to the wavelet function order was studied by using a criterion defined to evaluate the severity of the energy leakage. In addition, a method based on resampling technique was proposed to relieve the effects of the energy leakage. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been validated by numerical simulation study and experimental study.

Abstract:Some theoretical problems such as the transitive relation of orthonormal wavelet packet basis at different scales,the transitive relation of wavelet packet decomposition coefficients at different scales,the statistical attributes of wavelet packet decomposition coefficients for white Gauss noise,and the properties of correlation function for orthonormal wavelet packet basis are investigated,and some theoretical results are obtained successfully,Simulation results show the validity of the obtained theory results.

Abstract:The problem of leak location is actually a time delay estimation（TDE） problem.Since most existing TDE methods may encounter the problem of high computational complexity when used for online leak location.This paper presents a fast leak locating method based on wavelet transform（WT）.The method first gets a rough estimate of the time delay from the WT coefficients of the pressure signals at the largest scale,then keeps refining the estimate using WT coefficients on smaller and smaller scales.Quantitative analyses and test results based on real data show that the method reduces the computational complexity while maintaining the time delay estimation accuracy

Abstract:Aimed at overcoming the disadvantages of direct cross-correlation method to pinpoint the leak point,a method based on wavelet packet decomposition and power feature extraction was put forward to locate the leak point.The data were sampled by acoustic emission sensors,and was decomposed into a series of frequency bands.A few useful frequency bands were selected by power feature extraction,and the leak point was determined by comparing the correlation coefficient.Simulation and practical experiments indicated that the method presented in this paper eliminates the disadvantages of direct cross-correlation,improves the precision of location and is effective.

Abstract:Leak detection and location in oil pipelines are important for safe operation of pipelines. A new approach of leak detection and location using Wavelet Transform is proposed in this paper. Field test on a �� 750 mm petroleum transport pipeline showed that, with this method, a leak can be reliably detected, and the location error is less than 2% of the monitored pipeline length when the leak is above 0.5% of the pipeline nominal flow.

Abstract:This paper aims at digital watermark which is a new popular research topic recently, presents some methods to embed digital watermark based on modifying frequency coefficients in discrete wavelet transform (DWT) domain. First, the present progress of digital watermark is briefly introduced; after that, starting from Pitas’s method and discarding his pseudo random number method, the authors use a digital image scrambling technology as preprocessing for digital watermarking. Then the authors discuss how to embed a 1-bit digital image as watermark in frequency domain. Finally another digital watermarking method is given in which 3-D DWT is used to transform a given digital image. Based on the experimental results, it is shown that the proposed methods are robust to a large extent.

Abstract:Transient wave reflection methods (TWRMs) have exhibited favorable capability in leak detection for elastic pipelines, but applications have demonstrated their relatively low accuracy for viscoelastic pipelines. This paper investigates the transient wave behaviour, the principal tenet for leak detection by TWRMs, in a leaky viscoelastic pipeline to understand the mechanism of wave modification by leaks and viscoelasticity. Based on the correspondence principle, this research derives analytical formulations of the leak-induced wave reflection and phase difference at any measurement point in a viscoelastic pipe. According to the measured reflection coefficient, an optimization algorithm is further developed to detect the leak. The methodologies are then assessed and discussed through sinusoidal and sigmoid perturbations in numerical and laboratory tests. The extensive analyses indicate that measurement distance and leak ratio affect the magnitude of the reflected wave, yet, the wave phase shift is relatively independent of the leak ratio for practical applications.

Abstract:Classic differential energy watermarking(DEW) is the watermarking technique based on discrete cosine transformation (DCT).In order to implement it in discrete wavelet transform(DWT) domain,we present a DWT-based differential energy watermarking. First,we choose the coefficients of DWT sub-band to form the DWT blocks which are similar to the DCT blocks.As the local energy difference is created by DEW when the watermark is embedded,the watermark will be detected according to this local energy difference. Then,in order to prevent the local energy difference from disappearance,the energy of a sub-region is properly increased to ensure that the bit error rate in image detection can effectively drop a lot after the JPEG compression on the watermark-embedded image under the condition of ensuring good visual quality of the image.The impact of the quantisation factor on image quality is analysed to a certain extent in the paper,and is compared with the robustness of anti-compression attack methods in literatures as well.Experimental results show that our method is effective.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel oil pipeline leakage detection system has been presented. A modified multi-scale wavelet transformation modulus maxima algorithm was used to detect and locate the singularity of the characteristic signal of oil pipeline. According to the singularity, the leakage point could be known. In order to promote the precision, an adaptive threshold wavelet packet algorithm be utilized to filter the noises, after denoising the essential singularity of signal would not loss. Through simulation experiments confirm the validity of these algorithms.

Abstract:The discrete wavelet analysis has become the up-to-date technology for signal processing, especially for image compression. The effect to image compression has been testified by all kinds of applications and researches. Discrete wavelet transform (DWT) represents image as a(1) sum of wavelets on the different resolution levels. Basis for wavelet transform can be composed of any function that satisfies the requirements of multiresolution analysis. It is clear that there exits a numerous selection of wavelet families in according to the choice of wavelet function. The choice of wavelet family depends on the applications. This choice in image compression application must depend on image content. In this paper, we will introduce fundamentals of wavelet based image compression. The results of image quality for different wavelet functions, compression ratios, image contents and resolution are given. So we can find comparatively better way to compress image according to the different requirements.

Abstract:As every engineering student knows, any signal can be portrayed as an overlay of sinusoidal waveforms of assorted frequencies. But while classical analysis copes superbly with naturally occurring sinusoidal behavior-the kind seen in speech signals-it is ill-suited to representing signals with discontinuities, such as the edges of features in images. Latterly, another powerful concept has swept applied mathematics and engineering research: wavelet analysis. In contrast to a Fourier sinusoid, which oscillates forever, a wavelet is localized in time-it lasts for only a few cycles. Like Fourier analysis, however, wavelet analysis uses an algorithm to decompose a signal into simpler elements. Here, the authors describe how localized waveforms are powerful building blocks for signal analysis and rapid prototyping-and how they are now available in software toolkits.

Abstract:A new feature extraction method based on local energy of frequency bands is presented in this paper. Wavelet packet decomposition is studied and the concept of local energy of frequency bands based on wavelet packet decomposition is used to measure the signal energy in selected frequency bands and certain time-interval. The proposed feature extraction method was tested on simulated signals. The results showed that the developed approach was effective.

Abstract:Energy holes caused by heavy local communication load will shorten the network lifetime greatly in Wireless Sensor Network(WSN) applications.Aiming at the problem,this paper proposes Wavelet Analysis Based Energy Hole Localization(WABEHL) algorithm,which can provide geometry information of the energy holes to network energy optimization algorithm.It localizes the energy hole by analyzing the lowest frequency sub-band LL1 of the wavelet transformed network communication ability graph,and the geometry details are decided by transforming the LL1which takes a thresholding process firstly.Experimental result shows that WABEHL has good localization performance of energy holes under different scenarios,which is observed through extensive simulations.

Abstract:The emergence of power quality as a topical issue in power systems in the 1990s largely coincides with the huge advancements achieved in the computing technology and information theory. This unsurprisingly has spurred the development of more sophisticated instruments for measuring power quality disturbances and the use of new methods in processing and analyzing the measurements. Fourier theory was the core of many traditional techniques and it is still widely used today. However, it is increasingly being replaced by newer approaches notably wavelet transform and especially in the post-event processing of the time-varying phenomena. This paper reviews the use of wavelet transform approach in processing power quality data. The strengths, limitations, and challenges in employing the methods are discussed with consideration of the needs and expectations when analyzing power quality disturbances. Several examples are given and discussions are made on the various design issues and considerations, which would be useful to those contemplating adopting wavelet transform in power quality applications. A new approach of combining wavelet transform and rank correlation is introduced as an alternative method for identifying capacitor-switching transients.

Abstract:Firstly, a sub-band energy threshold entropy was proposed as information measurement cost function. Then a novel best wavelet packet power measurement algorithm was proposed, which can decompose power signals into sub-bands adaptively according to the energy distribution, meanwhile, this algorithm can perform the decomposition of power energy in one wavelet packet process. The simulation using db40 wavelets shows that: the measurement relative errors of root mean square (RMS) and the active power are less than 6脳10-5 in the total band, and the quoted errors of active power are less than 8.2脳10-5 in the sub-bands.

Abstract:Empirical wavelets transform (EWT) is a fully adaptive signal-analysis approach, which is similar to the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) but has a consolidated mathematical theory, and is appealing in designing automatic algorithm for a variety of signal processing tasks. EWT first estimates the frequency components presented in the given signal, then, computes the boundaries and extracts the oscillatory components based on the computed boundaries. Because of the excellent performance of the EWT in decomposing the nonlinear and non-stationary signals, it has been successfully applied into a number of problems. The last six years have seen the development of EWT. This paper presents a general overview of the recent advancements made in research on the EWT algorithm and its state-of-the-art applications in a wide range of areas, such as machine fault diagnosis, seismic data analysis, image processing, power system monitoring, and medical disease diagnosis, which aims at providing some comprehensive references for reader concerning with EWT. We place emphasis on the applications of using such signal-analysis algorithm throughout with illustrative examples. Finally, the potential avenues for the future trends and directions associated with EWT are discussed.

Abstract:As an alternative method of empirical mode decomposition (EMD), the empirical Wavelet transform (EWT) method was proposed to realize the signal decomposition by constructing an adaptive filter bank. Though the EWT method has been demonstrated its effectiveness in some applications, it becomes invalid in analyzing some noisy and non-stationary signals due to its improper segmentation in the frequency domain. In this paper, an enhanced empirical wavelet transform method is proposed. This method takes advantage of the waveform in the frequency domain of a signal to eliminate drawbacks of the EWT method in the spectrum segmentation. It modifies the segmentation algorithm by adopting the envelope approach based on the order statistics filter (OSF) and applying criteria to pick out useful peaks. With these measures, the proposed method obtains a perfect segmentation in decomposing noisy and non-stationary signals. Furthermore, simulated and experimental signals are used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.
