Abstract:Aromatic polyesters bearing pendent carboxyl functionalities were prepared by interfacial polycondensation of diphenolic acid, bisphenol A and isophthaloyl chloride with tetrabutylammonium chloride as phase transfer catalyst. The copolyester composition was confirmed with HPLC analysis. The polymerization process and composition of the copolyesters were examined by considering influences of reaction temperatures, time, ratio of feeds, agitation speeds.

Abstract:A series of liquid crystalline copolyesters containing both horizontal and lateral rods in main chain were synthesized through solution polymerization of 2,5-bis(4-alkoxy benzoyloxy)hydroquinone. 4,4'-dihydroxy-x,omega-dipheanoxydecane These copolyesters were soluble in common organic solvents, showed thermotropic nematic liquid crystallinity that can be easily obtained at room temperature, thereby making them processable at relatively low temperatures in their high-ordered liquid crystalline states where they are thermally stable. Their thermal transitions can be well adjusted by judiciously controlling the attachment content of lateral rods, and their thermal behaviors were well examined. All synthesized polymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (CPC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM) and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). Abstract:A series of main chain liquid crystalline copolyesters with X-shaped two-dimensional mesogenic units and crown ether cycles of trans-4, 4'-bis (4-hydroxyphenylazo) dibenzo-18-crown-6 was synthesized via solution cocondensation polymerizations from 4, 4'-(alpha, omega-hexanedioylxy) dibenzoyl dichloride (M-1), 2, 5-bis (p-octyloxybenzoyloxy) hydroquinone (M-2) and trans-4,4'-bis (4-hydroxyphenylazo) dibenzo-18-crown-6 (M-3) as the monomers. The molecular weights of copolyesters are not high, and the [eta] of the copolyesters ranges from 0.37 similar to 0.25 dL/g. The monomer structures were identified by using elementary analysis, IR, UV, H-1-NMR and MS etc. All the copolyester samples are yellowish powders and insoluble at room temperature in THF and CHCl3 except sample CP9. The properties of copolyesters were investigated by using GPC, [eta], DSC, TG, WAXD and POM. It was found that all the copolyesters went into liquid-crystal phase when they were heated over their melting temperature (T-m). In their liquid crystalline state, the typical mosaic texture or focal-conics texture or broken fan texture of smectic phase, and ball granul texture or thread texture or schlieren texture of nematic phase can be observed. Their melting temperature and isotropization temperature (T-i) changed regularly with varying the trans-4, 4'-bis (4-hydroxyphenylazo) dibenzo-18-crown-6 unit content in the copolyesters. The WAXD studies also evidenced the liquid crystallinity of these copolyesters.

Abstract:The synthesis and property of a new series of "mesogen-jacketed liquid crystal polymers" are reported. These polymers have aromatic amide structures as the mesogenic groups and are represented by poly-2,5-bis(4-methoxybenzamido)styrene. The preliminary study on properties shows that the polymers have very high glass transition temperatures as well as very low critical concentrations for the formation of the lyotropic liquid crystal phase. The results indicate a high degree of chain rigidity. However, the liquid crystalline order of molecular organization in bulk samples disappears upon heating to the glass transition temperature as revealed by polarizing microscopy and by X-ray diffractometer. Therefore, the liquid crystalline order of these polymers forms only through solution but not through heating. This behavior is different from that of the previously studied poly-2,5-bis[(4-methoxybenzoyl)oxy]styrene and its homologs. The latter polymers are liquid crystals both lyotropically and thermotropically. (C) 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:A series of novel mesogen-jacketed liquid crystal miktoarm star rod-coil block copolymers were synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Their architectures {coil conformation of styrene segment and rigid rod conformation of {2,5-bis[(4-methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene} (MPCS) segment} were confinned by GPC, H-1 NMR, and MALDI-TOF studies. The liquid crystalline behaviors of the synthesized copolymers are evidenced from POM observation. The liquid crystalline phase depends on the molecular weights of the rigid rod arm of miktoann star copolymers.

The WAXD study illustrated that the copolyesters are liquid crystalline with a nematic phase. A dispersive peak at 2 theta near 20 degrees appeared in their WAXD patterns, which is a typical character for quenched nematic liquid crystal copolyesters.

Abstract:series of liquid crystalline and non-liquid-crystalline sequential copolymers was synthesized by radical polymerization of styrene and the mesogenic monomer. The liquid crystalline behavior of the copolymers was studied by DSC, polarized optical thecroscopy and X- ray diffraction. It was found that the mesogenic monomen and all copolymers except the CP -9, showed good thermotropic liquid crystallinity and broad temperature ranges between T8 and Ti, The molecular weights, transition temperatures and decomposition temperatures of the copolymers changed regularly with the increase of the contents (mol%) of styrene in the copolymers.

Abstract:New monomers, 2,5-(4-alkoxybenzoyl-oxy)benzyl acrylates were synthesized. Upon radical polymerizations of these monomers thermotropic liquid crystalline polyacrylates with mesogens laterally attached to polymer backbones via short linkages were obtained. The polymers were found non-crystalline by WAXS measurements. Above glass transition all the polymers had a stable mesophase as revealed by DSC and a polarizing microscope. The glass transition and the isotropization temperatures were about 100°C and about 165°C respectively, both varying with the size of the R substituents in the mesogens. The term “mesogen-jacketed polymer” is proposed to describe this type of polymers of which the main chains are jacketed with laterally substituted mesogens and to distinguish this new class of side chain liquid crystal polymers from the conventional ones.

Abstract:A series of thermotropic, liquid crystalline (LC) polyesters was prepared in which the mesogenic group contained an unusually large, polarizable pendant group in an attempt to increase intermolecular interactions so as to impart a more isotropic character to the mechanical properties of the solid polymer. The series included repeating units containing main chain, polymethylene flexible spacers of increasing lengths. All of the polymers formed stable nematic LC phases and had relatively low melting temperatures, but recrystallization from the melt was very slow in each case.

Abstract:Novel aromatic poly(ether ketones) containing bulky lateral groups were synthesized via nucleophilic substitution reactions of 4,4'-biphenol and (4-chloro-3-trifluoromethyl)phenylhydroquinone (CF-PH) with 1,4-bis(p-fluorobenzoyl)benzene. The copolymers were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide-angle X-ray diffraction, and polarized light microscopy observation. Thermotropic liquid-crystalline behavior was observed in the copolymers containing 40, 50, 60, and 70 mol % CF-PH. The crystalline-liquid-crystalline transition [melting temperature (T-m)] and the liquid-crystalline-isotropic phase transition appeared in the DSC thermograms, whereas the biphenol-based homopolymer had only a melting transition. The novel poly(aryl ether ketones) had glass-transition temperatures that ranged from 143 to 151degreesC and lower T-m's that ranged from 279 to 291degreesC, due to the copolymerization. The polymers showed high thermal stability, and some exhibited a large range in mesophase stability. (C) 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:This paper describes x-ray analysis of the structure of a group of wholly aromatic thermotropic liquid crystalline copolyesters, focusing on two systems: condensation copolymers of 4-hydroxy-benzoic acid (HBA) and 2-hydroxy–6-naphthoic acid; and of HBA, 2,6-dihydroxy-naphthalene, and terephthalic acid. The fiber diagrams of these copolymers contain a series of aperiodic meridional maxima that shift in position with the monomer ratio. We have shown that these characteristics are predicted by a structure consisting of an array of chains of completely random monomer sequence. The positions of the maxima are predicted by a simple model in which the monomers are represented by points, separated from their neighbors by the appropriate monomer lengths. Use of atomic models for the monomers leads to prediction of both the positions and the intensities of the maxima. Calculations for nonrandom sequence distribution show that all but minimal blockiness can be ruled out. From the breath of the meridional maximum at d = 2.1 Å it is possible to estimate the correlation or persistence length for the stiff chain conformation in the solid state.

Abstract:The copolyester containing bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) methanone, terephthalic acid, phydroxybenzoic acid and diethylene glycol was synthesized using direct melting condensation polymerization method. The said polyester was characterized by means of differential scanning calorimetry, polarized microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The experimental results show that the copolyester exhibits nematic liquid crystallinity and possesses a broad mesophase temperature range and a good thermal stability.

Abstract:A novel combined main-chain/side-chain liquid crystalline polymer based on mesogen-jacketed liquid crystal polymers (MJLCPs) containing two biphenyls per mesogenic core of MJLCPs main chain, poly(2,5-bis{[6-(4-butoxy-4'-oxy-biphenyl)hexyl]oxycarbonyl)styrene) (P1-P8) was successfully synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The chemical structure of the monomer was confirmed by elemental analysis, 1 H NMR, and 13 C NMR. The molecular characterizations of the polymer with different molecular weights (P1-P8) were performed with 1 H NMR, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Their phase transitions and liquid-crystalline behaviors of the polymers were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscope (POM). We found that the polymers P1-P8 exhibited similar behavior with three different liquid crystalline phases upon heating to or cooling in addition to isotropic state, which should be related to the complex liquid crystal property of the side-chain and the main-chain. Moreover, the transition temperatures of liquid crystalline phases of P1-P8 are found to be dependent on the molecular weight.

Abstract:Novel main chain poly(aryl ether ketone)s containing a lateral phenyl group were synthesized by nucleophilic substitution reactions of 4,4′-biphenol and phenylhydroquinone with either 4,4′-difluorobenzophenone or 1,4-bis(4-fluorobenzoyl)benzene and their thermotropic liquid crystalline properties were characterized by a variety of experimental techniques. Thermotropic liquid crystalline behaviour was observed in the copolymers containing 50 and 70 mol % biphenol. Melting (Tm) and isotropization (Ti) transitions both appeared on the DSC thermograms. A banded texture was formed after shearing the sample in the liquid crystalline nematic state. As expected, each of the copolymers had a relatively lower melting transition than the biphenol-based homopoly(aryl ether ketone)s because of the copolymerization effect of the crystal-disrupting monomer phenylhydroquinone.

Abstract:A novel combined main-chain/side-chain liquid-crystalline polymer based on an ethyl cellulose main chain containing azobenzene mesogens (AzoEC) was successfully synthesized. Molecular characterization of the resulting polymers with different degrees of substitution (DS) was performed with proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Thermal stability was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The phase transitions and liquid-crystalline behavior of these polymers were investigated by differential-scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). The results indicate that DS has substantial effect on the liquid-crystalline behavior of these polymers. AzoEC with low DS only shows the cholesteric phase similar to ethyl cellulose (EC). However, when DS increases to a specific value, AzoEC begins to show fascinating supramolecular structures. The supramolecular structure of AzoEC with maximum DS consisted of a large-scale ordered lamellar structure formed by EC main chains and a small-scale ordered structure formed by azobenzene mesogens.

Abstract:Mesogen-jacketed liquid crystalline polymer (MJLCP) is a typical rod-shaped macromolecule. Its unique molecular architecture allows one to tune the geometric parameters of the macromolecular rod. Moreover, the rod surface chemistry can be controlled by designing the peripheral groups of the lateral mesogens. In previous work in this system, short alkyl chains have been used and the resultant macromolecular rods therefore have a hydrophobic surface. In this paper, we report using oligo(oxyethylene) groups as the peripheral groups of the lateral mesogens. Poly{{2,5-bis[4-methoxyoligo(oxyethylene)phenyl]oxycarbonyl}styene} (PnEOPCS) with different oligo(oxyethylene) chain length has been synthesized. These oligo(oxyethylene) groups led to macromolecular rods with hydrophilic surface. Differential scanning calorimetry, polarized light microscopy, and one-/two-dimensional wide-angle X-ray diffraction experiments were carried out to study the phase structures and phase behaviors of this series of polymer. The existence of flexible polar groups lowered the glass transition temperatures of PnEOPCS. All polymers studied showed supramolecular columnar nematic or hexatic columnar nematic phase, which arose from the parallel alignment of the polymer supramolecular rods. The diameter of the cylindrical building block increased with increasing the length of the oligo(oxyethylene) groups. The macromolecular rod surface can be further tuned by complexation the oligo(oxyethylene) with lithium salts. Detailed study showed that this complexation also tremendously affected the liquid crystalline phase of the polymer.
Synthesis and characterization of fully aromatic thermotropic liquid-crystalline copolyesters containing m-hydroxybenzoic acid units

Abstract:A series of fully aromatic copolyesters based on p-acetoxybenzoic acid (p-ABA), hydroquinone diacetate (HQDA), terephthalic acid (TPA), and m-acetoxybenzoic acid (m-ABA) were prepared by a modified melt-polycondensation reaction. The copolyesters were characterized by DSC, thermogravimetric analysis, 1H NMR, polarized optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and intrinsic viscosity measurements. The copolyesters exhibited nematic liquid-crystalline phases in a broad temperature range of about 150 °C, when the content of linear (p-ABA, HQDA, and TPA) units was over 67 mol %. DSC analysis of the anisotropic copolyesters revealed broad endotherms associated with the nematic phases, and the melting or flow temperatures were found to be in the processable region. The flow temperatures and crystal-to-nematic and nematic-to-isotropic transitions depend on the type of linear monomer units, and these transitions increased as the content of the p-ABA units increased, as compared to the HQDA/TPA units. When the content of the p-ABA units increased, as compared to other linear units (HQDA and TPA), the intrinsic viscosity and degree of crystallinity of the copolyesters also increased, implying a higher reactivity for p-ABA in the p-ABA/HQDA/TPA/m-ABA polymer system.
