Abstract:By using a modified model of calculating solid fraction, the solid fraction in the solid/liquid interface zone can be expressed by a second order equation with one variable based on calculating phase diagram, instead of assumptions of the position and shape of the solid/liquid interface. Using the model, the solidification microstructure and solute microsegregation of U-6%Nb (mass fraction) binary alloy are simulated. The simulated results show that Nb concentration is the highest at the initially nucleated position. With solidifying, Nb concentration at the nucleus decreases continuously, and at the end of the solidification, poor Nb zones (< 3%) appeared on the grain boundary.

Abstract:The solidus, liquidus and volume of residual liquid were achieved by analyzing the solidification behavior of a sub-eutectoid U-Nb alloy. Results show that the dentritic crystal connects with each other and residual liquid is separated by solid phase during terminal solidification. Thus, serious micro-porosity form easily in isolated residual liquid area for the filling channels plugging and residual liquid unable to fill the pore, and the amount of porosity in casting is about 1.6% derived from theoretical calculation. The segregation coefficients of niobium at intermediate and terminal solidification are 0.16 and 0.11, respectively, which indicates that Nb is a strong negative segregation element and it severely clusters in the dendritic area.

Abstract:In this work, a cellular automaton model has been developed to simulate the microstructure evolution of U-Nb alloy during the solidification process. The preferential growth orientation, solute redistribution in both liquid and solid, solid/liquid interface solute conservation, interface curvature and the growth anisotropy were considered in the model. The model was applied to simulate the dendrite growth and Nb microsegregation behavior of U-5.5Nb alloy during solidification, and the predicted results showed a reasonable agreement with the experimental results. The effects of cooling rates on the solidification microstructure and composition distribution of U-5.5Nb were investigated by using the developed model. The results show that with the increase of the cooling rate, the average grain size decreases and the Nb microsegregation increases.

Abstract:The isothermal transformation kinetics of U-2Nb alloy was investigated. Based on metallographic quantitative measurements, the general kinetics was presented with the time-temperature-transformation (TTT) diagram. Results show that considerable discrepancies are identified in comparison with previous work on similar alloys. The differences are mainly attributed to two different transformation mechanisms, namely the monotectoid and the discontinuous precipitation reactions, which are operated at higher (550 similar to 647 degrees C) and lower (450 similar to 550 degrees C) temperatures, respectively. In addition, the growth rate of the acicular a precipitate in its lengthening direction, which proceeds through monotectoid reaction, was discussed. Modeling of the lengthening rate was carried out with the Zener-Hillert model supposing a diffusion-controlled mechanism.

Abstract:The microstructure evolution of U-Nb alloys during solidification and consequent cooling process was simulated using a cellular automaton (CA) model. By using this model, gamma phase precipitation and monotectoid decomposition were simulated, and dendrite morphology of gamma phase, Nb microsegregation and kinetics of monotectoid decomposition were obtained. To validate the model, an ingot of U-5.5Nb (wt.%) was produced and temperature measuring experiment was carried out. As-cast microstructure at different position taken from the ingot was investigated by using optical microscope and SEM. The effect of cooling rate on gamma phase precipitation and monotectoid decomposition of U-Nb alloys was also studied. The simulated results were compared with the experimental results and the capability of the model for quantitatively predicting the microstructure evolution of U-Nb alloys during solidification and consequent cooling process was assessed.

Abstract:Abstract The maximum undercooling that has been achieved for Ni-Cu alloy, by using molten glass purification and cyclic super-heating technology, is 270 K. With the help of high-speed photography, the solidification front images of Ni-Cu alloy at various typical undercooling were obtained. Two grain refinements occurred in the range of 60 K< ΔT < 100 K and ΔT > 170 K, the solidification front became smoother, and the solidification position appeared randomly. With the increase of undercooling, the transition from solute diffusion to thermal diffusion leads to the transition from coarse dendrite to directional fine dendrite. At large undercooling, considerable stress is accumulated and some dislocations exist in the microstructure. However, the proportion of high-angle grain boundaries is as high as 89%, with twin boundaries of 13.6% and most strain-free structures, and the microhardness decreases sharply. This indicates that the accumulated stress at large undercooling causes the plastic strains in the microstructure, and in the later stage of recalescence, part of the plastic strains is dissipated by the system and acts as the driving force to promote the recrystallization of the microstructure.

Abstract:The solidification microstructures and elemental microsegregation behavior of a new Ni-base superalloy K4750 was comparatively investigated by differential thermal analysis (DTA), Thermo-Calc calculation and isothermal solidification quenching (ISQ) experiment. The results of ISQ indicate that the temperature of liquidus and solidus of K4750 alloy are 1350 degrees C and 1270 degrees C, respectively, and the precipitated temperature of MC carbide is 1320 degrees C. The temperature of liquidus obtained by DTA and Thermal-Calc is in close agreement with the result of ISQ, but the temperature of solidus obtained by DTA and Thermal-Calc are 1306 C and 1296 C, respectively. In the initial stage of the solidification process, the volume fraction of residual liquid decreases sharply. In solidification process within the temperature range of 1310 degrees C similar to 1290 degrees C, the residual liquid in the interdendritic region transforms from connected channels to isolated micro-liquid pools. In the last stage of solidification, these isolated micro-liquid pools are quite sluggish and result in the formation of porosity. The microsegregation coefficients of W, Fe and Cr are larger than 1, so they are considered to be negative segregation elements and segregate in solid. In contrast, the microsegregation coefficients of Ti, Nb, C and Mo are less than 1, and thus they are positive segregation elements and segregated in the liquid.
Investigation of Solidification and Segregation Characteristics of Cast Ni-Base Superalloy K417G

Abstract:Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis, isothermal solidification experiment and Thermo-Calc simulation were employed to investigate solidification characteristics of K417G Ni-base superalloy. Electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) was employed to analyze the segregation characteristics. Liquidus, solidus and the formation temperatures of main phases were measured. In the process of solidification, the volume fraction of liquid dropped dramatically in the initial stage, while the dropping rate became very low in the final stage due to severe segregation of positive segregation elements into the residual liquid. The solidification began with the formation of primary gamma. Then with solidification proceeding, Ti and Mo were enriched in the liquid interdendrite, which resulted in the precipitation of MC carbides in the interdendrite. Al accumulated into liquid at the initial stage, but gathered to solid later due to the precipitation of gamma/gamma' eutectic at the intermediate stage of solidification. However, Co tended to segregate toward the solid phase. In the case of K417G alloy, combining DSC analysis and isothermal solidification experiment is a good way to investigate the solidification characteristics. Abstract:In this paper, based on the embedded atom method (EAM) potential, molecular dynamics simulations of the solidification process of Al-4 at.%Cu alloy is carried out. The Al-Cu alloy melt is placed at different temperatures for isothermal solidification, and each stage of the entire solidification process is tracked, including homogeneous nucleation, nucleus growth, grain coarsening and microstructure evolution. In the nucleation stage, the transition from high temperature to low temperature manifests a change from spontaneous nucleation mode to divergent nucleation mode. The critical nucleation temperature of the Al-Cu alloy is determined to be about 0.42 T m (T m is the melting point of Al-4 at.%Cu) by calculating the nucleation rate and the crystal nucleus density. In the nucleus growth stage, two ways of growing up are observed, that is, a large crystal nucleus will absorb a smaller heterogeneous crystal nucleus, and two very close crystal nuclei will merge. In the microstructure evolution of the isothermally solidified Al-Cu alloy, it is emerged that the interior of all nanocrystalline grains are long-period stacking structure composed of face centred cubic (FCC) and hexagonal close-packed (HCP). These details provide important information for the production of Al-Cu binary alloy nano-polycrystalline products.

Abstract:The solidification process of a conventional superalloy, IN718, was investigated by confocal scanning laser microscope (CSLM). The liquid fraction during solidification was obtained as a function of real time and temperature in reference with the in-situ observation. The characteristics of L ->gamma transformation were analyzed and the gamma growing rate of each stage was also calculated. Scheil equation was employed to predict the segregation behavior, and the predict results are in consistence with the experimental results. As a result, the confocal scanning laser microscope shows a great potential for solidification process research.

Abstract:The effects of solute elements segregation during solidification on microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of a Ni-Cr-Mo-V rotor weld metal were studied. The alloy elements, such as Mn and Ni, segregated at inter-dendritic (ID) region, resulting in microstructural inhomogeneity between ID and dendritic core (DC) region. The microstructure of ID and DC region was characterized in detail by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and transmission electron backscatter diffraction (T-EBSD). The results showed that the microstructure of ID region was composed of untempered martensite and retained austenite, while the bainite and ferrite were found at DC region. Two morphologies of retained austenite, film-like and blocky, were formed at different nucleation sites within ID region. The film-like retained austenite distributed at low-angle martensite lath boundaries held a near Nishiyama–Wasserman (N–W) orientation relationship with its surrounding untempered martensite lath, while the blocky retained austenite distributed at high-angle boundaries held no special orientation relationship with surrounding matrix. The segregation behavior of alloy elements was analyzed by Scheil solidification simulation. The formation mechanism of untempered martensite and retained austenite was proposed and the effects of ID segregation on impact toughness and hardness were discussed.

Abstract:The solidification process and segregation feature of K4169 alloy is studied by DSC, Thermo-Calc simulation and isothermal solidification analyses. The segregation and precipitation behavior of superalloy K4169 during isothermal solidification at 1360 and 1120 degrees C have been observed by the means of optical microscopy (OM), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results stated that the solidification began with the formation of primary gamma dendrites, and accompanied by the formation of MC carbides. During the solidification, Nb, Mo and Ti were enriched in the residual liquid phase, which eventually lid to the formation of MC carbides and Laves phases. The liquidus of K4169 was 1354 degrees C, and the solidus was 1240 degrees C. Its solidification sequence can be identified as follows: L -> gamma at 1354 degrees C; L -> gamma + MC at 1290 degrees C; L -> gamma + Laves at 1120 degrees C.

Abstract:TiAl-Nb alloys have been determined as the advanced direction for the development of the high temperature TiAl alloys, so being one of the advanced materials for turbines of aircraft engines and gas-burning power-generation plants. However, highly-Nb addition can lead to the complex solidification behavior of TiAl-Nb alloy and multi-phase microstructure, which is important for the mechanical properties during the alloy design. Bridgman type directional solidification experiments were conducted for Ti-46Al-(8, 9, 10)Nb alloy. The effect of the growth rate and Nb content on the microstructure, phase transition and microsegregation was investigated, and finally the selection diagram of the phase transition and the microstructure of the directional solidified TiAl-Nb alloy were obtained. The results show that the planar-cellular-dendritic evolution of solid-liquid interface can be observed with the increase of the growth rate. Meanwhile the fully beta phase solidification changes to the peritectic solidification with the increase of the growth rate, and correspondingly the final microstructure is composed of the alpha(2)/gamma lamellar structure and a multiphase microstructure (B2 phase, alpha(2)/gamma lamellar structure) respectively. The increase of the beta-stabilizer Nb content can promote the fully beta phase solidification and the formation of the multiphase microstructure (B2 phase, alpha(2)/gamma lamellar structure). The contribution of the growth rate and the Nb content to the phase transition and the microstructure is connected with the solute segregation (S- segregation, beta-segregation) closely. The increase of the S- segregation amplitude can easily promote the peritectic reaction, which always leads to the highly solute segregation and the concentrated distribution of plenty of B2 phase in the core of the dendrite. beta-segregation is the mainly origin of the B2 phase formation, in which the Nb enrichment in the retained beta phase directly determines the morphology and the dimension of the B2 phase. Finally according to the selection diagram of the solidification process and the microstructure of the Ti-46Al alloy with the growth rate and the Nb content, the high Nb content and the low growth rate during fully beta solidification should be selected for the prefer microstructure with the homogeneous distribution and the low solute segregation.

Abstract:The microstructure evolution and solidification behaviour of Nb–16Si–22Ti–2Cr–2Al–6Hf alloy processed by liquid metal cooled directional solidification were investigated. The temperatures (1850 and 1900°C) and withdrawal rates (1·2, 3, 6, 12 and 18 mm min−1) were selected. The directionally solidified alloy was composed of primary Nb solid solution dendrites, silicide laths and two types of eutectic (fish bone-like and lamellar eutectic) aligned along the growth direction. As the withdrawal rate increased, the microstructure of the quasi-steady state growth region became finer and the volume fractions of (Nb,X)5Si3 laths and the fish bone-like eutectic (Nb,Ti)SS+(Nb,X)5Si3 increased, which was contrary to lamellar eutectic (Nb,Ti)SS+(Nb,X)5Si3. The volume fraction of (Nb,X)5Si3 laths in the whole directionally solidified rod decreased as the temperature increased from 1850 to 1900°C. In addition, the solidification paths were also discussed.

Abstract:The ultrasonic irradiation is successfully introduced into Nb-Si-Mo melt. The coarse silicide has been refined significantly. Ultrasonic irradiation can increase the solid solubility of Si in Nbss phase. The vibration attenuates during propagation in transition region, leading to the silicide with specific shape in linear arrangement. The wavelength and introducing efficiency of the standing wave are calculated.

Abstract:The segregation and precipitation behavior of Alloy 690 containing 0.001-0.11 wt% nitrogen during isothermal solidification at 1370 and 1355 ℃ have been investigated using optical microscopy (OM),electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).The results indicate that the volume fraction of TiN-type nitride formed during isothermal solidification increases with the nitrogen content of Alloy 690.Segregation of Ti and Cr exists in samples solidified at 1370 and 1355℃.The Ti content in the residual liquid markedly decreases and the concentration of Cr increases when the nitrogen content of Alloy 690 increases.Furthermore,N and S also show segregation to some extent in the residual liquids at 1355℃.Accompanying by the segregation of Cr,Ti,C,N and S,sulfides and chromium nitrides form.In a low nitrogen content Alloy 690,sulfur segregates and precipitates in the form of Ti 4 C 2 S 2 and (Cr,Ti)S,but in the form of (Cr,Ti)S or CrS in a high nitrogen content Alloy 690.(Cr,Ti)N-type nitrides with an fcc crystal structure have been identified in a sample with 0.11 wt% nitrogen.

Abstract:Single crystal blades have already been used in some advanced engines. An industrially valuable nickel-base single crystal superalloy CMSX-2 was solidified at cooling rate from below 1 K/s to 20 K/s. Microstructure and microsegregation were investigated. The results showed that the dendritic arm spacing is highly refined al high cooling rate, the primary dendritic arm spacing can be 35 mu m, just as 1/10 as that by conventional HRS processing. With the increase of cooling rate, the microsegregation increases and then decreases. In the superfine columnar dendrite, the gamma' precipitates are very fine; the amount of gamma/gamma' eutectic is much fewer and its size is very small.

Abstract:We have investigated the solidification microstructures of the non-equiatomic and equiatomic V-Nb-Mo-Ta-W alloys, which are one of the first refractory high entropy alloys, and found intriguing dual body-centered cubic (BCC) microstructures. There were two issues to be addressed in these alloys: an unidentified strengthening mechanism and intense microsegregation in the as-cast state. We determined that the as-cast microstructure of the non-equiatomic V 14 Nb 19 Mo 20 Ta 24 W 23 and V 22 Nb 24 Mo 24 Ta 24 W 10 alloys consist of two BCC phases with different lattice constants, and that the equiatomic alloy of the V-Nb-Mo-Ta-W system consists of two BCC phases with different compositions but the same lattice constants. The two BCC phases form lattice-matched interfaces, suggesting that precipitation-hardening with high lattice-matching can be one of the reasons for the excellent high-temperature mechanical properties of this alloy system. In addition, we also found that the alloys that were poor in V and Nb, and rich in Ta and W compositions solidified without precipitating of secondary BCC phases. The alloys in this compositional range have partition coefficients of the elements closer to 1 than those with near-equiatomic compositions.

Abstract:NbSi2 is an attractive material for high temperature applications due to its high melting point, low density and good oxidation resistance. The high-temperature strength of NbSi2 is expected to be further improved by incorporation with Nb5Si3, which performs a high creep resistance and strength at high temperature due to its complex crystal structure. In this paper, directionally solidified NbSi2/Nb5Si3 in-situ composites have been prepared using an optical floating zone method. Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) have been used to investigate the phase constitution and microstructure. The orientation relationship between Nb5Si3 and NbSi2 is investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). High-temperature properties of alloys are tested by compression at the strain rate of 1 x 10-(4)/s at 1673K and 1773K. It was found that high temperature strength and phase constitution of directionally solidified alloys depended on the addition of Mo.

Abstract:The solidification and micro- and macro-segregation behaviors of as-cast INCONEL 718 (IN718) alloy at different temperatures under a slow cooling rate (5 °C/min) were investigated in this study. The results indicate that the solid-liquid interface grows into reticulation of hexagons during solidification. The variation trend of the solid fraction and transition rate of the solid phase with solidification time can be well characterized by the Boltzmann and Gaussian distribution, respectively. The order of segregation degree of negative segregation elements is: Fe > Cr > Al. Nb is the most principal positive segregation element, which is abundant in the long-term unsolidified remaining liquid. At the terminal stage of solidification, the increasing tendencies of the Nb and Mo contents in the liquid and the residual liquid density with decreasing temperature reverse due to the formation of the Laves phase. The freckles are most likely to form in the early stages of solidification, at which the liquid fraction is between 0.3 and 0.2, and the temperature range is about 1320 °C to 1310 °C.
