Abstract:The responsibilities and functions in project safety risk management for designers and contractors are discussed. Generally the process of risk management is divided into three stages: the risk identification, evaluation, and decision making. The former two are mainly the designer's responsibility, for which a model of sub-system risk management approach is put forward. The model is exemplified and analyzed with real cases. The feasibility in risk identification and evaluation period is proved. The evaluation criteria of occurrence probability of unexpected events and severity of outcomes are rationally set up in evaluation method, which provide the scientific basis in risk evaluation of the construction safety.

Abstract:Safety issues have gained vital importance throughout the construction industry. Many construction companies around the world are implementing safety, health, and environmental management systems to reduce injuries, eliminate illness, and to provide a safe work environment in their construction sites. This paper describes an exploratory study of site safety management in construction sites’ environments. It explains a successful, modern safety, health and environmental management system for a leading construction company based in Hong Kong. A typical site-specific safety plan was utilized to provide safety guidance throughout the construction project. A safety management survey was conducted to determine the status of safety in the construction sites. All employees of the company and its subcontractors participated in the survey from 20 construction projects. In total, 1,022 valid records were obtained from the construction sites. The analysis provided useful information on eight aspects of construction safety, including safety policy and standards, safety organization, safety training, inspecting hazardous conditions, personal protection program, plant and equipment, safety promotion, and management behavior. The findings of the survey provide practical knowledge to construction project managers and construction safety practitioners in order to make their sites safer. Insights and discussions are given in this paper.

Abstract:This paper aims at presenting the analysis of the views of construction participants in China’s construction industry on three major site safety issues. First, data from three distinctive roles (project managers, safety officers, and foremen) on site safety knowledge were analysed. Results indicate that they have low levels of safety knowledge. This is consistent with the existing literature, implying that safety training and education is a major issue around the world. In addition, the views of project managers and safety officers are further elicited on the second issue (that is, factors affecting site safety) and the third issue (that is, methods for improving project safety management). Results indicate that both parties have quite consistent views. The six most important factors are “lack of attention to safety protection by workers”, “lack of attention to safety management by main contractors/project managers”, “insufficient safety training”, “inadequate safety level”, “tiredness of workers”, and “poor quality of construction materials and equipments”. The five most promising methods are “increase in safety investment in terms of manpower, capital and finance”, “improvement in safety operations”, “no alcohol at work”, “increase in safety training and education for workers”, and “increase in safety inspection”. Discussions are given in this paper.

Abstract:Because of unique hazardous nature of construction, construction workers suffer highest rate of death and disabling injuries around the world. To eliminate fatalities and injuries this paper aims to study that how site safety is implemented and how employees particularly workers perceive safety management on construction sites. Abstract:Chinese contractors undertaking international projects are frequently criticized for their poor Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) performance. It is noticed that people with different occupations may perceive OHS differently. From a qualitative perspective, this study investigates the perceived OHS performances of design managers and construction managers engaged in Chinese overseas construction projects, considering a range of subgroups classified by people’s overseas experience, project size, project industry, project location, and firm size. The analysis was based on an e-questionnaire survey that sampled responses from 52 design managers and 160 construction managers involved in 110 international projects, and face-to-face interviews with 26 managers. The findings indicate that the assessment variation of OHS performance between design managers and construction managers is not only related to their different mental ways, but also can be mediated by their in-progress communication and affected by project and organizational conditions. The varying OHS performance in projects with different sizes or from different regions also suggests that Chinese contractors should be more proactive in OHS management instead of passively responding to external requirements.

Abstract:With the increasing of social electricity consumption, power engineering is gradually facing severe challenges in the process of development. Due to the complexity and particularity of power engineering, in the actual construction process, some construction management units, construction units fail to implement the relevant safety management regulations, easy to cause safety accidents, safety management issues are very important. Therefore, this paper discusses the current safety management of power engineering construction site from the perspective of power supply enterprises, and analyzes the current safety management status of power engineering from three aspects: personnel safety awareness, safety education and training, and safety management methods. In view of these three aspects, management methods and effective countermeasures such as establishing safety awareness of all staff, strengthening safety education and training, improving safety risk prevention and control system, strengthening outsourcing team management and construction site management and control are proposed, which provide reference and suggestions for the healthy and stable development of the power supply industry.

Abstract:Construction is one of the most hazardous industries due to its unique nature. Measured by international standards, construction site safety records in China are poor. This paper aims to examine the status of safety management in the Chinese construction industry, explore the risk-prone activities on construction sites, and identify factors affecting construction site safety. The findings reveal that the behavior of contractors on safety management are of grave concern, including the lack of provision of personal protection equipment, regular safety meetings, and safety training. The main factors affecting safety performance include ‘poor safety awareness of top management’, ‘lack of training’, ‘poor safety awareness of project managers’, ‘reluctance to input resources to safety’ and ‘reckless operations’. The study also proposes that the government should play a more critical role in stricter legal enforcement and organizing safety training programs.

Abstract:A fiberoptic intracranial pressure transducer (Camino) was assessed prospectively in 100 patients. In all, 122 sensors were inserted intraparenchymally at the bedside, without the help of a neurosurgeon. Before the procedure, patients were given 2 to 4 mg of phenoperidine. The scalp was opened over a few millimeters in the frontal paramedian area. A burr holc was made with a 2 mm bit. The dura mater was opened and a hollow screw inserted in the diploë. When the zero of the transducer had been obtained, a 5 cm length was inserted within the screw. The transducer was then about 5 mm deep within cerebral parenchyma. The procedure took an average of about 15 min. An intracerebral haematoma around the transducer occurred five times. One had to be drained surgically. There were no infectious complications. The daily baseline drift was about 0.3 mmHg. The system seemed to be reliable: there was close agreement between the intracranial pressure (ICP), neurological status and CT scan findings. In trauma cases, there was also good correlation between mean ICP and the basal cistern obliteration score, finally, ICP became equivalent to mean arterial blood pressure in all brain dead patients. It is concluded that this system may be used in all cases where ICP requires to be monitored, even when the lateral ventricles are no longer visible, or when craniotomy has been performed. This will most probably result in a more extended use of ICP monitoring in neurosurgical intensive care.

Abstract:The infrastructure construction of the power grid is a key part of the national power supply. Power construction is characterized by a complex environment, including many personnel and equipment, and cross-industry multi-unit collaboration. Therefore, it is difficult to achieve precise safety management in substation project construction (SPC). To improve the safety management and control of SPC, a security management and control system is proposed and realized based on the advanced Internet of Things (IoT) and smart sensors technologies. Based on the characteristics of the SPC, the analysis of the construction process of the safety management system is carried out. The operation parameters are sampled by smart sensors, and uploaded by industrial gateway devices and IoT communication devices. The monitoring data would be analyzed by artificial intelligence algorithms and the results would be shown in the building information modeling (BIM) map. Finally, a management and control system covering monitoring, early warning and alarming has been constructed. The application of smart construction site systems is also discussed in the safety management and control of SPC. Combined with the application of the actual field system, the rationality of the safety management and control system is verified.

Abstract:In recent years, with the rapid development of my country's power infrastructure level, higher requirements have been correspondingly put forward for the support of informatization, the degree of interaction of data and information, and the real-time degree and accuracy of analysis. According to the hidden dangers and safety requirements of various aspects of the electric power construction site, this paper proposes an informationized solution for the safety of the electric power construction site. In terms of power project management, build power project management applications to support power engineering project management business, and realize the integrated management of the progress of power engineering projects and construction teams by the management unit; in terms of power engineering construction plan management, monitor the power engineering construction plan, Release construction plans in a timely manner and grasp the implementation of construction plans; in terms of safety supervision of power construction sites, use on-site control terminals, integrate mobile application technology, and standardize power engineering construction operations through standardized operation guidance, strengthen the safety awareness of construction personnel, and provide The personnel adds a line of defense; in terms of safety system and standard management, the current power engineering safety rules and regulations, standards, regulations and other documents are released to facilitate mutual inquiry and reference among various units.

Abstract:SUMMARY Health and safety at construction sites deals with both physical and psychological well-being of workers on construction sites and other persons whose health is likely to be adversely affected by construction activities. It is of primary concern to employers, employees, governments and project participants. Health and safety therefore is an economic as well as humanitarian concern that requires proper management control This Paper set out to study the health and safety management on construction sites in Kenya. The objectives included; investigating the health and safety measures used on construction sites; evaluating the enforcement mechanisms of health and safety regulations on construction sites and examining the challenges encountered in the management of health and safety. The findings indicate that health and safety measures on construction sites are inadequate and effective enforcement mechanism of health and safety measures is lacking. Various challenges are faced in the management of health and safety, the major being inadequate enforcement mechanism. Consequently, health and safety are often neglected on construction project sites and rarely managed. In conclusion the enforcement mechanism for health and safety is weak since there lacks clear and well-defined supervisory authority in most construction sites. The paper recommends that the existing health and safety laws enforcement mechanisms be reviewed. The Directorate of occupational health and safety services should step up inspections and penalise those who fail to observe the provisions of the Act. Further, all parties in construction project site must work together and contribute their rightful parts towards making construction sites healthy and safe. The output of this paper contributes to improvement of the health and safety management for construction projects. The findings are useful for construction managers, policy makers, contractors and construction employees to increase their understanding of the health and safety management practices. In addition, the accrued knowledge on health and safety management forms a base for theoretical knowledge for further research and training in the construction health and safety body of knowledge. This paper also hopes to bridge the knowledge gap and provide a guideline to improving health and safety on the construction sites.

Abstract:Modern mining engineering has become a huge system project with the increased intensification and complexity of mining engineering, which interwinds, involving many factors. Ethical issues in the main body of mining engineering have become more and more prominent. What must complement ongoing discussions is a more professional and systematic analysis that engages with mining engineering on the socio-technical systems. In this paper, first, the connotation and basic principles of mining engineering ethics are put forward. Then, the ethical responsibilities that mining engineers may face are analyzed. It is suggested that the code of mining engineering ethics can, in practice, provide engineers with the necessary guidelines to avoid mine accidents caused by wrong decisions. In addition, a case base is introduced to train students to analyze engineering ethics in practical cases, and four typical case studies are discussed in detail. Then, the implementation paths of mining engineering ethics are studied, which are centered on the concept of safe, efficient, green, and low-carbon development. Finally, we suggest that improving the ethical norms of mining engineering, personnel training system, and moral supervision of mining projects will enable engineers to deal with the ethical issues of mining engineering more effectively, thereby improving the sustainability of mining engineering.

Abstract:In this study, five Smart Construction Objects (SCOs) are developed and demonstrated. The usefulness and characteristics of the developed SCOs were evaluated using a tri-axial diagram analysis method. In addition, a smart construction management system associated with the developed SCOs is proposed. The efficacy of the management system is demonstrated by applying it to various types of construction site, including tunnel construction, railway construction, and underground water tank construction. The results of the tri-axial diagram analysis showed that the developed SCOs have improved awareness and autonomy compared to previously available ones. Multiple on-site applications of the developed smart construction management system resulted in a significant reduction in the time and cost required for construction by more than 40% and 70%, respectively, compared to conventional methods. This is attributable to the simplification of construction resource management procedures, JSA (Job Security Analysis), TBM (Tool Box Meeting), PTW (Permit to Work), and nonconformity management.
