Abstract:Pipelines are widely used for transporting oil resources in the context of offshore oil exploitation. The pipeline stress-strength analysis is an important stage in related design and ensuing construction techniques. In this study, assuming representative work environment parameters, pipeline lifting operations are investigated numerically. More specifically, a time-domain coupled dynamic analysis method is used to conduct a hydrodynamic analysis under different current velocities and wave heights. The results show that proper operation requires the lifting points are reasonably set in combination with the length of the pipeline and the position of the lifting device on the construction ship. The impact of waves on the pipeline is limited, however lifting operations under strong wind and waves should be avoided as far as possible.

Abstract:As one of the main ways to transport natural gas, pipeline safety is of great significance to maintaining social stability and ensuring the national energy supply. Aiming at the safe operation of natural gas pipelines in subsidence areas of coal mine, this work proposes a safety management system for condition monitoring and control. This system contains three technical modules: the surface and pipeline displacement monitoring, the risk assessment index system, and early warning model. Firstly, the collected data of site topography and pipeline conditions are transmitted to the database remotely. Second, multi-source data are collected to form data reports and conduct in-depth analysis and mining. Then, according to the analysis results, the pattern of surface and pipeline displacement is explored, the risk assessment system of gas pipelines is constructed, and the pipeline strain is monitored. Real-time computing and other technologies are developed to form a safety management system for gas pipelines in subsidence areas. Taking Shanxi Province in China as an example, based on the system developed by the technical modules, the application of surface and pipeline displacement monitoring, risk assessment, and pipeline stress-strain monitoring technology in subsidence areas is achieved. The results show that the risk score of the area where the pipeline is located is 82, which is a high-risk level. In addition, in the process of strain monitoring, the measured stress at the most unfavorable position is 140.207 MPa, which meets the allowable stress requirements. This safety management system can provide important support for decision-making of risk prevention, assessment, and management of natural gas pipelines in subsidence areas of coal mine.
Configuration of Submarine Pipeline for Deepwater S-lay Technique

Abstract:The safety of submarine pipeline has become an important problem during installation in deep water due to the combined action of high external water pressure, axial tension and bending moment. The special studies are focused on the deepwater S-lay technique in the present paper. The stiffened catenary theory is applied to establish the static equilibrium governing differential equation of a pipe element, and the solution equations of total configuration of the pipeline from a laybarge over a stinger to the seabed are completely derived. The numerical iteration method for solving pipeline configuration is presented in detail, and the corresponding program is developed by authors to carry out the analysis of effects of various parameters such as water depth, pipe diameter, thickness of concrete weighted coating layer, stinger length and control strain on pipe-laying configuration. The results show that as the inclination angle at the lower end of stinger is larger or smaller, the effects of these parameters on the configuration of pipeline are different; however, the thickness of concrete weighted coating layer has little effect on the configuration.

The results show that the laying water depth, the submerged weight of the pipe, and the axial tension are the critical factors influencing pipeline configuration. In addition, geometrical parameters of the stinger such as length, radius, and shape have an important effect on the pipe-laying capacity of the vessel. The validity of the program is further verified by means of a comparison with results obtained from the commercial finite element software OFFPIPE.

Abstract:Ocean engineering companies focus more attention on technology research and development for decreasing cost and increasing benefit to match lower oil prices. Offshore operation become a key research item as it costs 30-50% of the total package. Subsea pipeline installation has characteristics of "hidden", and its design is often based on a lot of conservative assumptions. The pipeline installation monitor is a set of automatic and easy operation safety assistant system to improve economy and safety by monitoring subsea pipeline strength during installation through the real-time data acquisition and processing.The system is composed of devices and monitoring software. The devices provide real-time analysis data. Monitoring software is developed by c++ language,and used for data receiving,parsing and real-time analyzing through calling commercial finite element software OrcaFlex by OrcaFlex API, thus finally visually outputting pipeline information such as stress, strain, TDP, etc., giving the ship operation personnel safety instruction, and making decisions in time.

Abstract:For the past few years, the pipeline accidents have occured frequently, and usually the accidents have a tremendous impact.So people pay more and more attention to the pipeline safety.Ordinarily, the pipeline is ar-ranged as a line, unavoidable, there would be new construction along the pipeline, and some of them have to take the blasting work.The safety and plan of blasting work near pipeline were mainly studied.Also, the safe distance was suggested by numerical simulation.It showed that it is quite dangerous to carry on blasting near the pipeline with case 1, 2 and 3, and blasting work can be used with the improved plan.The static blasting and mechanical excavation should be used as far as possible in 50m away from the pipeline.

Abstract:Submarine Pipeline plays an important role in the development of Oil and Gas, especially when the field extends into the deep water. There is over 4,000 kilometers submarine pipeline in China Sea, and some of them encountered failure, and the accidents lead to loss of property and pollution of environment. Health Monitoring is a new concept and economical way to ensure the safety of pipeline. In the paper, a practical algorithm which includes abnormality detector, remaining fatigue life counter and vibration analysis, and its practical application program based on DELPHI, are both introduced. An AR (Auto-Regression) Model is adopted as a statistical tool to detect the abnormity of time-history signals, if the abnormity comes up, the vibration analysis is started up to give out the vibration information, which is the effective evidence to alarm the owner where the danger is and how the danger is. With the abnormity detector module, a remaining fatigue life counter always runs to counter the remaining life of pipeline, especially the welding of pipeline. The system is all developed based on Distributed Optical Fiber Sensor (DOFS). The system in the paper is now used on QK17-1 Oil field Submarine Pipeline in Bohai Sea, China.

Abstract:The author considers that the ageing of oil/gas pipeline is a global issue, and operators should comprehensively take pipeline's original condition and maintenance condition as well as oilfield production into account to determine whether the pipeline at ageing stage could continue to operate safely. Take Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) for example, the paper introduces TAPS's original condition, maintenance condition and economic factors and service life, and points out that TAPS's successful experience in operating ageing pipeline can be referenced for the purpose of promoting and ensuring safety operation of China's Northeast Oil Pipeline Networks. For the program worked out for intermittently transporting Daqing crude and Russian crude through QingTie Oil Pipeline, the author presents the viewpoint that the problems in pipeline's original condition and stress/strain should be investigated and studied thoroughly so as to make decision carefully.

Abstract:With the rapid development of Chinese economy, gas pipeline service is also stepping into a period of fast expansion, whereas the traditional construction system and management modes can not meet the need for the gas pipeline projects under the present and near-future condition. Therefore, in combination with actual practices, a construction-management division mode has been performed with good results by the Chinese National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) for the long-distance gas pipeline projects. However, for the lack of enough experience within a short time, many deficiencies have been arisen in this construction-management division mode: a. How to implement construction supervision when the pipeline under construction is being parallel to or crossing over/through the one in service; b. How to protect the pipeline during the process of pipeline construction; c. Which side should be responsible for the trial operation before the pipeline is put into formal service; d. What standard should be followed when check and acceptance are being done on the completed pipeline; e. Which side should be in charge of the quality defects after the pipeline is put into service. How to solve those above-mentioned problems will directly influence the result of this construction-management division mode in the gas pipeline project. With regards to this, based on the actual pipeline projects, the content to be completed in this separate management mode was analyzed and some active proposals were put forward hereby.

Abstract:Highway, railway, waterway and pipeline are ways to transport oil. The pipeline has irreplaceable superiority, such as high throughput, low energy consumption and low cost. So the pipeline is the artery of energy source of national economy and very important to the development of social economy. When the pipeline is constructed, crossing some rivers is inevitable. If the crossing method and engineering management were unreasonable, the environment will be damaged, especially the pipeline may be destroyed seriously by the third party damage. Recently, the techniques of design, construction and management of pipeline river-crossing have made a great progress in the world. But pipeline river-crossing is still a technical problem, it needs hydrological research and analysis, geological prospecting and scheme selection. Qing-Tie crude oil pipeline locates in the Northeast of China and has been operated 35 years. It crosses 121 rivers. In these rivers, most sections of the pipeline are attacked by water directly because of the covering soil was washed away. Some sections are baring and hanging tens of meters. It is hidden trouble of security of operation. Especially the pipeline crosses Chai River in Liaoning province, it is laid by culvert of stone, once has an accident it can't be remedied. So remaking the crossing project scheme is essential. This paper has introduced the basic situation of Qing-Tie pipeline and Chai River. The stratum description, weather and hydrogeology, earthquake situation and the stability of bank are analyzed and evaluated. Heavy excavation, directional drilling, shield pushing and drilling blasting are compared by merits and drawbacks, construction period and engineering cost. Finally, the directional drilling is considered to be the best. The crossing horizon, embedded point, out point and laying parameters are worked out. The establishment and implementation of the project scheme is reference for the technique of pipeline river-crossing. © 2011 ASCE.
Practices of and problems in the construction-management separation mode in a long-distance pipeline project: A case study of the Shaanxi-Beijing Line 3

Abstract:With the expansion of long-distance pipeline construction, the traditional management mode can not meet the need of the pipeline construction and development in present China. In 2007, CNPC promoted the construction-management separation mode for the long-distance pipeline projects. However, for lack of long-time practices, this promoted mode needs to be further studied and fulfilled. Therefore, in this case study of the Shaanxi-Beijing Line 3, this paper discussed the emerging problems and put forward some proposals accordingly. At the construction stage, it was suggested that the operation units should organize in advance the operating personnel to regulate the engineering quality of design and construction as well as the quality of key equipments, and to supervise the parallel and cross construction between new and in-service pipelines; when the pipelines are put into production, the operation units should apply detection techniques to test the quality of pipelines, and establish the pipeline quality database. In this way, the safe operation of pipelines will be guaranteed for a long time. Also, this paper put forward some solutions to those leftover problems such as laggard rectification, a poor responsibility investigating system, the negative effect of the lagged transfer of the completion data, incomplete hydraulic protection work, and so forth. For example, the working interface should be re-divided between the construction and operation units and temporary files should be provided. This study is of practical significance to fulfilling the construction-management separation mode, to improving the pipeline construction quality, and to ensuring the smooth handover from pipeline construction to operation management.
Optimization and Stress Analysis of Underground Oil Pipelines in High and Steep Slope Areas

Abstract:Underground oil pipelines are made of pressurized pipes, and when damage occurs, the consequences can be disastrous. Pipeline accidents caused by stress can be attributed to material corrosion, impractical design, manufacturing defect, environmental damage, and man-made destruction. In this study, by utilizing the stress analysis software CAESAR II, the stress of pipelines in high and steep slope areas was analyzed under the same operating conditions and different piping technologies. Comparing the different simulation consequences of each pipeline technology, an optimized laying process was proposed to reduce the stress of underground oil pipelines in high and steep slope areas; this process was named Sectional Pipe Laying Process. According to the results of CAESAR II, the stress and movement of underground oil pipelines in high and steep slope areas were drastically reduced and the safety greatly enhanced.

Abstract:Deep-water or open sea area developments bring technology challenges to offshore pipeline installation safeties. With low oil price, offshore contractors endure considerable pressure and struggle to provide cost-effective services. To achieve safe operations with higher efficiencies, it is essential to acquire better understanding of pipeline conditions in-process, which benefits operation planning and decision making. Offshore operational window and pipeline fatigue damage significantly depends on vessel motions. Current engineering practices generally predict motions through metocean and hydrodynamics based numerical simulations. This approach is useful but naturally leads itself to prediction uncertainties, which are most likely conservatism. With deep-water and open sea application, the uncertainties may become underestimations of key parameters due to possibly insufficient metocean data and inapplicable hydrodynamic methods. Subsequently, a real-time offshore pipeline installation monitoring system has been developed to predict realistic pipeline behavior by adoption of real-time operation parameters including vessel motions. A sea-trial for the system has been conducted on a pipelay project in 2016. As an alternative treatment to pipeline installation planning and decision making, the system has been proven capable of accurate simulations and additional functions such as touch point monitoring and fatigue tracking.

Abstract:The transportation of crude oil mainly relies on long-distance buried oil pipelines, which are generally made of steel pipes. Oil leakage often occurs due to corrosion, causing environmental pollution and unsafe accidents. A digital monitoring system for pulse current cathodic protection of oil pipelines was studied, with a focus on the composition and functions of the digital monitoring system for pulse current cathodic protection of oil pipelines. In 2022, the system was applied on two oil pipelines in Tongzhai operation area of the Third Oil Production Plant of Changqing oil field. The system realized the pulse current cathodic protection of oil pipelines to prevent corrosion. At the same time, it can digitally monitor the pulse current cathodic Conservation status status and adjust the working state of the potentiostat, and cooperate with the pulse current cathodic protection monitoring expert system for auxiliary analysis, which has received good economic and social benefits.
