Abstract:Nanostructuring is one of the effective approaches to lower the thermal conductivity of materials. Nanostructured skutterudite-related compounds CoSb3, Fe0.5Ni0.5Sb3, Fe0.25Ni0.25Co0.5Sb3 and Te-doped CoSb3 were synthesized by a solvothermal route. The bulk materials were prepared by hot pressing or spark plasma sintering from the solvothermally synthesized nanopowders. The thermal conductivity values of the materials are decreased, which is mainly contributed to the small grain sizes and the high porosity. A thermoelectric figure of merit of 0.61 has been obtained for CoSb3, which is notably high for the unfilled skutterudites. Filled skutterudites La0.3Co4Sb12 and La0.3FeCo3Sb12 were also synthesized by solvothermally process followed by annealing under hydrogen atmosphere. The thermoelectric properties are presented and discussed.

Abstract:Skutterudite compounds have excellent thermoelectric performance in the intermediate-to high temperature range. Their lattice thermal conductivity can be reduced by intensifying phonon scattering through independent vibrations of the guest atoms, by filling the voids within the lattice. Furthermore, the thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) can be enhanced by optimizing the carrier concentration through charge compensation between transition elements. In this study, we compared the thermoelectric properties of p-type filled skutterudite materials, R y Fe 4-x Co x Sb 12 , where R represents rare-earth elements (La/Ce/Pr/Nd/Yb), which were filled in the voids, and Co was charge-compensated at the Fe site. In the case of La y Fe 4-x Co x Sb 12 , the introduction of La filling and Co doping led La 0.9 Fe 3 CoSb 12 to exhibit a high power factor and low thermal conductivity (ZT = 0.67 at 723 K). In the case of Ce y Fe 4-x Co x Sb 12 , in addition to Ce filling, the substitution of Co for Fe resulted in additional lattice scattering, leading to a decrease in thermal conductivity. However, CeFe 4 Sb 12 exhibited a maximum performance of ZT = 0.70 at 823 K. In the case of Pr y Fe 4-x Co x Sb 12 , the thermal conductivity was reduced through phonon scattering induced by Pr filling and additional lattice scattering caused by Co substitution; as a result, Pr 0.8 Fe 3 CoSb 12 exhibited ZT = 0.89 at 723 K. In the case of Nd y Fe 4-x Co x Sb 12 , the phonon scattering was enhanced by adjusting the filling of Nd and substitution of Co, resulting in a lower thermal conductivity; Nd 0.9 Fe 3.5 Co 0.5 Sb 12 exhibited ZT = 0.91 at 723 K. For Yb y Fe 4-x Co x Sb 12 , Yb 0.9 Fe 3 CoSb 12 exhibited a thermoelectric performance of ZT = 0.56 at 823 K. In addition, in this study, for the fabrication (application) of thermoelectric modules, the p-type Nd 0.9 Fe 3.5 Co 0.5 Sb 12 skutterudite, which exhibited the best thermoelectric performance, was prepared in bulky compacts to verify the uniformity and reproducibility of its thermoelectric performance.

Abstract:Thermoelectric properties of nanostructured skutterudite CoSb3 have been reported. Nanosized CoSb3 powders were synthesized through a solvothermal route. The bulk materials with average grain sizes of 250 and 150nm were prepared by hot pressing and spark plasma sintering from the solvothermally synthesized CoSb3 powders. Both the samples show n-type conduction and the thermal conductivities are reduced compared with that of the sample prepared by the melt-annealing∕hot pressing method. A thermoelectric figure of merit of 0.61 has been obtained for the unfilled CoSb3 skutterudite by spark plasma sintering, which indicates that nanostructuring is an effective way to improve the thermoelectric properties of skutterudite compounds.
Doping distribution in Skutterudites with ultra-high filling fractions for achieving ultra-low thermal conductivity

Abstract:Low lattice thermal conductivity is of great importance for thermoelectric materials and thermal barrier materials. Interstitial or substitutional atoms in the host lattice fundamentally introduce point defects to scatter phonons, which is, however, not sufficient for achieving glass-like thermal conductivity. Here, we fabricated the Yb-filled CoSb3 skutterudites with an ultra-high Yb filling fraction, in which the coexistence of ordered superstructures and nano/sub-nano scale inhomogeneous Yb interstitials was revealed. An ultra-low lattice thermal conductivity approaching the glass limit was achieved due to the enhanced rattling effect from the ultra-high Yb filling fraction and extra phonon scattering from the ordered superstructures, nanoscale inhomogeneous Yb fillers, and high-density lattice strain caused by the ordered and modulated fillers. Modulating the distribution of doping atoms opens a new dimension for doping atoms to achieve ultra-low thermal conductivities for thermoelectric materials and thermal barrier materials beyond the point defects scattering perspective.

Abstract:The thermoelectric properties of indium (In) and lutetium (Lu) double-filled skutterudites In (x) Lu (y) Co4Sb12 prepared by high-pressure synthesis were investigated in detail from 4 K to 365 K. Our results indicate that In and Lu double filling can remarkably reduce the thermal conductivity, and substantially improve the thermoelectric performance. A thermoelectric figure of merit of ZT = 0.27 for In0.13Lu0.05Co4.02Sb12 was achieved at 365 K, being larger by one order of magnitude than that for CoSb3. It is thought that the large difference in resonance frequencies of the In and Lu elements broadens the range of normal phonon scattering in the multifilled skutterudites, helping to achieve an even lower lattice thermal conductivity. This investigation suggests that an effective way to improve the thermoelectric performance of skutterudite materials is to use In and Lu double filling.

Abstract:The electronegative filling in skutterudites not only broadened the scope of filling atoms, but also facilitated the preparation of p-type skutterudites. However, the introduction of a single sulfur atom in the Co4Sb12 cannot be achieved without charge compensation through the traditional equilibrium method. In the present study, the dual occupations of S-atoms by self-charge compensation were shown as the most stable forms under high pressure, and a series of p-type S y Co4Sb12−2y S2y skutterudites was successfully prepared by high-pressure-high-temperature (HPHT) method. The electronic structures and transport properties of as-obtained materials were investigated, and the related mechanisms were explored. The results suggested that the presence of S-impurities led to flattening of the electronic band that led to a higher Seebeck coefficient. The S-doped Co4Sb12 displayed lower elastic modulus, elastic constant, and Debye temperature, thus indicating the chemical bond softening in skutterudites. The thermal conductivities of S y Co4Sb12−2y S2y compounds reduced monotonously with the increase in S-content. This study provides a new and promising avenue for optimizing the thermoelectric properties of p-type Co4Sb12.

Abstract:High performance multiple-filled X–CoSb3 skutterudites (X = Yb、Ca、Ba、Al、Ga、In、La、Eu) was prepared by the long term annealing and hot-pressing approaches. Compared with the one-element filling method, multi-elements filling in CoSb3 can improve their thermoelectric values. The lattice constant of skutterudite filled with multiple types of atoms was increased to 9.076 Å, higher than 9.036 Å of the un-filled one. The electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and Seebeck coefficient were analyzed from 300K to 823K. The filling fraction of Yb increase with the increasing Fe content in both the Fe-rich phase and the Fe-poor phase. For Ca atoms, a significant phase separation occurs in the Fe-rich phase and the Fe-poor phase, and the Ca filling fraction in the Fe-poor phase is much higher. With the increase of Fe contents, the Al atoms gradually increase in the Fe-poor phase and decrease in the Fe-rich phase. On the contrary, the filled Ga and In atoms have no obvious regularity in this statistical analysis. Compared with the referred Yb0.5Co4Sb12 sample, the lattice thermal conductivity is effectively reduced by multi-filling, the multi-filled skutterudite obtained the 47% reduce of the lattice thermal conductivity and the maximum ZT value was reached 1.22 at 823K.

Abstract:Double-filled skutterudites InxNdyCo4Sb12 have been synthesized by the inductive melting method. The thermal conductivity of these compounds is significantly depressed as compared to that of unfilled CoSb3, while their Seebeck coefficient is remarkably enhanced. We explore simultaneously enhancing the power factor and thermoelectric figure of merit ZT through Nd and In double filling. The attained largest power factor 3.2mWm−1K−2 (360K) is comparable to Ba and In double-filled skutterudites which possess very high ZT values. ZT=0.11 achieved in In0.09Nd0.03Co4Sb12.16 and In0.16Nd0.06Co4Sb11.93 at 360K is about two times larger than that of In single-filled skutterudites.

Abstract:Skutterudite compounds InxM0.2Co4Sb12 (M=Ba and Pb) with bcc crystal structure have been prepared by high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) method. Through this method, the processing time can be reduced from a few days to half an hour. Remarkably the combination of In and Ba was much more effective in reducing lattice thermal conductivity κL than In and Pb. The structure of InxM0.2Co4Sb12 skutterudites was evaluated by means of x-ray diffraction, and Seebeck coefficient, electrical resistivity, power factor and thermal conductivity of InxM0.2Co4Sb12 were all presented in the temperature range of 314.9–673K. The transport properties measured on the synthesized samples have been compared with each other. The figures of merit, ZT, of samples all increased with the increasing temperature. Among all the samples, In0.5Ba0.2Co4Sb12 showed the highest power factor of 30.3μWcm−1K−2 at 643.5K, the lowest lattice thermal conductivity 1.128Wm−1K−1 at 643.5K and the maximum ZT value 0.80 at 673K.

Abstract:Filled CoSb3-based skutterudites are promising middle-temperature thermoelectric materials. However, p-type skutterudites containing electropositive fillers require additional charge compensation by doping atoms at the framework, which leads to enhanced carrier scattering. In this work, p-type filled CoSb3 materials with electronegative guest Cl were successfully prepared by high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) process. A high filling fraction of Cl in void sites reaching ∼23% was obtained without charge compensation. Cl filler exhibited p-type electron acceptor behavior and can increase hole concentration of pristine CoSb3 to a magnitude of 1019 cm−3. As the content of Cl rose, abnormal spinal morphology and fine nano grain were observed in Cl-filled skutterudites. In turn, lattice thermal conductivity of Cl0.6Co4Sb12 sample significantly reduced by 46% when compared to pristine CoSb3 at room temperature due to enhanced scattering of point defect, rattler, and grain boundary. In sum, HPHT process looks promising for using Cl as additional p-type dopant candidate to yield significantly enhanced phonon scattering.

Abstract:In recent years, skutterudite filled with electronegative elements (S, Se, Cl, Br) has attracted the extensive attention of researchers. By doping electron donors (Pb, Ni, or Te, S, Se) at the Co or Sb sites, the electronegative elements can form thermodynamically stable compounds in the intrinsic pores of the skutterudite, substantially expanding the research scope of skutterudite. In this study, S0.05Co4Sb11.3Te0.6Se0.1 skutterudite was synthesized at high pressure and high temperature, with a pressure range of 2.0-3.5 GPa. The phase composition, micro-morphology, and electrical and thermal transport properties were systematically characterized. The micromorphology analysis shows that the introduction of S element and substituting Te and Se at the Sb sites inhibit the grain growth in a suitable high-pressure environment. Substantial differences are observed in the directions of the lattice stripes in the samples, and rich grain boundaries and many lattice distortions and dislocation defects occur. The carrier concentration can be optimized by filling the voids of the skutterudite with a few S atoms, and the thermoelectric properties can be optimized by scattering phonons through resonance scattering and defect scattering. The samples synthesized at a pressure of 3.0 GPa and a temperature of 900 K have a maximum power factor of 23.85 × 10-4 W m-1 K-2 and a maximum zT value of 1.30 at a test temperature of 773 K.

Synthesis and High Temperature Thermoelectric Properties of Calcium and Cerium Double-Filled Skutterudites Ca0.1CexCo4Sb12

Abstract:The thermoelectric properties of double-filled skutterudites Ca0.1CexCo4Sb12 (x = 0.05, 0.10 and 0.15) were investigated at temperatures ranging from 300 to 775 K. The results showed that the addition of Ca and Ce as filler atoms into CoSb3 led to a substantial decrease in lattice thermal conductivity. The minimum lattice thermal conductivity of 2.76 W K−1 m−1 was observed in the sample Ca0.1Ce0.15Co4Sb12 at 323 K. This is a 69% reduction as compared with pristine CoSb3. Moreover, filling the voids of the skutterudite crystal lattice with Ca and Ce atoms led to a transition from semiconducting-like behaviour (i.e. dρ/dT < 0) to metallic behaviour (i.e. dρ/dT > 0) as well as a change in the sign of the Seebeck coefficient. The highest dimensionless figure of merit, ZT, was obtained for the sample Ca0.1Ce0.15Co4Sb12. Specifically, it reached ZT of 0.83 at 677 K, which is double that of single-filled Ca0.2Co4Sb12 reported in the literature.
Thermoelectric Properties of P-Type Skutterudites (pr0.25nd0.75)(x)fe3cosb12 by Levitation Melting and Spark Plasma Sintering

Abstract:The p-type skutterudite compounds of ( Pr 0.25 Nd 0.75)x Fe 3 CoSb 12 (x = 0.67–0.78) have been successfully synthesized by levitation melting followed by annealing and spark plasma sintering. The thermoelectric properties have been characterized by the measurements of Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity in the temperature range from 300 K to 850 K. The improvement in the thermoelectric properties was realized due to the reduction in the lattice thermal conductivity when the voids were partially filled by Pr 0.25 Nd 0.75. The maximum ZT value of ~ 0.83 for ( Pr 0.25 Nd 0.75)0.76 Fe 3 CoSb 12 was obtained at 700 K.
Thermoelectric Property of Fine-Grained CoSb3skutterudite Compound Fabricated by Mechanical Alloying and Spark Plasma Sintering

Abstract:Skutterudite CoSb3 polycrystalline materials were prepared using a combined process of mechanical alloying (MA) and spark plasma sintering (SPS). The influence of SPS temperature on the thermoelectric properties was focused in this work with a special emphasis on the analysis of the size effects of grains. The average grain sizes decreased from 300 to 50 nm with decreasing SPS temperatures from 600 to 300 °C. The electrical resistivities of samples spark plasma sintered at 300–600 °C all decreased with increasing temperature, indicating a classic intrinsic conduction behaviour of semiconductors. The samples spark plasma sintered at 300–500 °C showed a positive Seebeck coefficient while the sample spark plasma sintered at 600 °C showed a negative Seebeck coefficient. The room-temperature thermal conductivities were reduced from 4.30 to 2.92 W m−1 K−1 as the grain sizes were decreased from 300 to 100 nm corresponding to SPS at 600 and 400 °C, respectively. The present work indicates that MA and SPS is a good combination for fabricating fine-grained CoSb3 thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:CoSb 3 -based skutterudites have been a benchmark mid-temperature thermoelectric material under intensive experimental and theoretical studies for decades. Doping and filling, to the first order, alter the crystal lattice constant of CoSb 3 in the context of “chemical pressure.” In this work, we employed ab initio density functional theory in conjunction with semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory to investigate the mechanical properties and especially how hydrostatic loadings, i.e., “physical pressure,” impact the electronic band structure, Seebeck coefficient, and power factor of pristine CoSb 3 . It is found that hydrostatic pressure enlarges the band gap, suppresses the density of states (DOS) near the valence band edge, and fosters the band convergence between the valley bands and the conduction band minimum (CBM). By contrast, hydrostatic tensile reduces the band gap, increases the DOS near the valence band edge, and diminishes the valley bands near the CBM. Therefore, applying hydrostatic pressure provides an alternative avenue for achieving band convergence to improve thermoelectric properties of N-type CoSb 3 , which is further supported by our carrier concentration studies. These results provide valuable insight into the further improvement of thermoelectric performance of CoSb 3 -based skutterudites via a synergy of physical and chemical pressures.
Thermoelectric Properties of Dual‐element‐filled Skutterudites LaxCa0.1Co4Sb12

Abstract:The partially filled LaxCa0.1Co4Sb12 (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6) skutterudites have been prepared by a simple melt‐annealing method followed by hot pressing. In this study, charge‐transport properties including the electrical conductivity σ, the Seebeck coefficient α, the thermal conductivity κ, and the Hall coefficient were presented. La–Ca double filling can effectively improve the thermoelectric properties. The electrical conductivity increases dramatically on increasing La content, while the lattice thermal conductivity decreases substantially, leading to a large increase of the ZT value. An increased ZT value of 0.75 has been obtained for La0.4Ca0.1Co4Sb12 at 735 K.

Abstract:A novel chemical alloying method of high-pressure and high-temperature (HPHT) has been used for the synthesis of bulk-skutterudite Te-doped CoSb3. Because the thermoelectric properties of skutterudites could be effectively optimized by changing synthetic pressure and temperature, and doping concentration, the orthogonal experimental design method has been applied. The Seebeck coefficient, electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity of CoSb3 were all performed in the temperature range of 371-710 K. The figure of merit, ZTs, increase with the increasing synthesis pressures until 2.3 GPa, and thereafter they decrease; the thermal conductivity decrease with the increasing synthesis pressures until 2.3 GPa, and thereafter they increase. Multiscale Length Structural Investigation and Thermoelectric Performance of Double-Filled Sr0.2Yb0.2Co4Sb12: An Exceptional Thermal Conductivity Reduction by Filler Segregation to the Grain Boundaries

Abstract:Among thermoelectric materials, skutterudites are the most prominent candidates in the mid-temperature range applications. In the multiple-filled Sr0.2Yb0.2Co4Sb12 skutterudite, with Sr and Yb as fillers, we have enhanced the thermoelectric performance of CoSb3 through the reduction of lattice thermal conductivity and the optimization of carrier concentration and electrical conductivity. The high-pressure synthesis of the double-filled derivative promotes filling fraction fluctuation. This is observed by high angular resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction, showing a phase segregation that corresponds to an inhomogeneous distribution of the filler atoms, located at the 2a positions of the cubic space group Im3̅. In addition, scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) combined with EELS spectroscopy clearly shows a segregation of Sr atoms from the surface of the grains, which is compatible with the synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction results. Mean square displacement parameters analysis results in Einstein temperatures of ∼94 and ∼67 K for Sr and Yb, respectively, and a Debye temperature of ∼250 K. The strong effect on resonant and disorder scattering yields a significantly lower lattice thermal conductivity of 2.5 W m-1 K-1 at 773 K. Still, good weighed-mobility values were obtained, with high filling fraction of the Yb and Sr elements. This drives a reduced electrical resistivity of 2.1 × 10-5 Ω m, which leads to a peak zT of 0.26 at 773 K. The analysis and results performed for the synthesized (Sr,Yb)-double filled CoSb3, shed light on skutterudites for potential waste-heat recovery applications.
