Abstract:According to the present concrete laminated slab, a new ribbed prestressed concrete laminated slab was developed. Based on the experiment of 2 specimens, the slab’ s mechanical characteristic, the crack development rule and the deformation under construction loads were studied. The results showed that the new laminated slab had a good crack resistance, stiffness and bearing capacity, and the deflection could meet the requirements of the standard of GB 50010—2010, also the steel bar’s maximum stress was less than design value. The tests were simulated using the finite element program ABAQUS, and the simulated results were in good agreement with the experimental results. The further research of the laminated slab would be implemented using the finite element numerical simulation.

Abstract:Experiments are conducted on sixteen specimens of simply supported composite steel-concrete beam with compact steel section to investigate their behavior of shear resistance. Above all, the vertical shear resisted by joist is calculated to investigate the vertical resisting shear capacity of shear force components of composite beams in experimental research on composite shear behavior of steel-concrete composite beams under sagging moment. In this paper, one method on stress analysis of webs of steel joists is introduced to compute shear stress in plastic range, and this method can estimate whether the stress state of steels is within strain-hardening range. Experiments were conducted on two specimens of steel beam with same section to validate this method. Test results show that the calculating results of this method agree with the collected data well.

Abstract:A new type of steel concrete composite beam with double-joist steel sections encased was introduced.Six large-scale specimens were designed and tested under four-point bending condition to study the performance indicators of normal section bending bearing capacity, deformation, ductility and ultimate curvature and ultimate bending moment.It was found that the double-steel reinforced concrete beam had high strength and well ductility.The cracking load and ultimate load of the beam were influenced by the steel ratio, rebar ratio, stirrup ratio, steel size, space, and shear studs.Based on the comparison of the test results and through correcting coefficient of concrete part and the whole part in two Chinese codes, the bending calculation formula of double-steel reinforced concrete beam was obtained.
Experimental studies of the bearing capability of a type of steel-concrete composite slab

Abstract:A kind of steel-concrete composite slab is proposed. Forty-three specimens of this kind of slab with different parameters are studied. Their behaviors during construction and use are analyzed, including the load-defection relationship, the strain distribution and crack development, etc.. The test results show that in the construction period, the steel form has good stability with small strain and deflection, and that in the use period, the composite slab has a similar property to that of RC element under bending, but it has higher load resistance and better ductility. The complete load-deflection curve for the composite slab is also analyzed by using a numeric method. The theoretic calculation results are identical with the test results.

Abstract:Static loading tests were conducted on 16 steel-concrete composite beams and two steel beams to investigate shear resisting mechanisms and the strength of composite beams. The main experimental parameters were the shear span aspect ratio of the simply supported beams, and the width and thickness of the concrete flanges. Based on strain measurements, stress in the steel beam was analyzed using theories of elasticity and plasticity, and the vertical shear that the steel beam resisted was calculated. The shear resistance of the concrete flange was then obtained by subtracting the steel shear contribution from the total load applied. It was found that the concrete flange could sustain 33-56% of the total ultimate shear applied to the composite beam specimens, contrary to the typical assumption of neglecting the concrete shear contribution in most design codes and specifications. A shear strength equation that considers the shear contributions of both the steel beam and the concrete flange is proposed.

Abstract:Two T-beam specimens widened with steel-concrete composite beams were tested(including four elastic load cases and one failure load case),and the load,deflection,reaction force,strain,and crack were measured and analyzed.The lateral distribution rules(LDU) of deflection and support reaction force were analyzed under the elastic load case,and the ultimate carrying capacity of the specimen was analyzed under failure load case.The result shows that the LDU of deflection is the same when the load is in the L/4 and L/2,and the factor of LDU of test has good agreement with the calculated results of the rigid transverse beam method and the modified rigid-jointed beam method.The LDU of reaction force support is the same when the load is in the L/4 and L/2,and the lateral distribution factor of test has good agreement with the calculated results of the lever method.Both the failure modes of the composite beam and concrete T-beam are bending failure under failure case,and the carrying capacity of the specimen is the sum of carrying capacity of composite beam and concrete T-beam.
Experimental investigation of composite steel-concrete beams with corroded studs

Abstract:Studs of six steel-concrete composite beams were corroded in the hogging moment region by electronic accelerating method with same current density but different duration. The effect of the stud corrosion on the mechanical behavior of composite beams was studied. It is shown that the expected corrosion rates can be approximately achieved and uneven corrosion of the studs is well simulated. Hogging moment was applied to one normal and six stud-corroded composite beams. The impacts of studs' corrosion rates on beam bending capacity, deflection and bond-slip between the steel and concrete were investigated. Results indicate that with increasing of stud corrosion rate, the stiffness of composite beams under hogging moment decreases. The ultimate strength of steel-concrete composite beams slightly decreases with the increased stud corrosion rate. However, the predictions for uncorroded composite beams using current design method are still conservative compared with test results. The bond-slip between steel and concrete will be increased with the increase of stud corrosion rate.
Experimental study of an innovative steel-concrete composite beam under hogging moment

Abstract:An experimental study about the failure mode and ultimate capacity of an innovative steel-concrete composite beam under hogging moment is reported herein. Compared to normal composite beams, additional concrete is casted inside the steel girder of these innovative composite beams, aimed to increase the resistance to hogging moment. The specimens consist of 4 innovative beams and 5 normal beams, the latter are designed for comparison. According to the test result, the innovative beams have obviously higher capacities compared to normal beams under hogging moment. An capacity calculation model is proposed, which is verified against the test results and proved to agree well with them. The test results also indicate that the concrete inside the girder of innovative beams increases the resistance to local buckling remarkably.

Abstract:In order to study the mechanical behaviors of continuous steel-concrete composite beams, especially for the influence of external prestress on the crack resistance and stiffness, static model tests are conducted for three simply supported steel-concrete composite beams under negative moment and three continuous two-span composite beams under point loads, with the model beams including two externally prestressed composite beams with the tendons laid in fold. The results show that the cracking load of the composite beams without prestress is rather low, the internal force redistributes in the continuous composite beams due to concrete cracking when the load is very small, and the crack space is influenced by the transverse reinforcement space. Otherwise, the cracking load of the composite beams with prestress is large, and the crack space, crack width, and deformation under the same load all decrease apparently, which indicate that external prestress on composite beams can enhance its comprehensive behavior. The influence of prestress on the slip pattern between the steel girder and the concrete slab is also obvious.

Abstract:This paper presents a summary of the experimental programmes and theoretical analysis of the bending performance of non-prestressed and prestressed timber-concrete composite (TCC) beams. Two non-prestressed and three prestressed composite beams were selected, and their flexural behaviour was evaluated. Three types of ductile fabricated connections were applied to the prestressed composite beams, whereas two types were applied to the non-prestressed beams. The concrete slabs with embedded steel plates and timber beams were connected together using coach screws. On the surfaces of the embedded steel plates, the portions in contact with the wooden beam were interspaced with a vulcanized rubber layer to improve the mechanical performance of shear connections and composite beams. A series of four-point bending experiments were performed until collapse failure occurred in a simply-supported scheme. The test results demonstrated that the TCC beams using steel plate + screw connections exhibited excellent structural performance. The flexural capacity of the prestressed specimens was improved by approximately 110% compared with the non-prestressed specimens. Due to the addition of the rubber layer in the TCC connections, the flexural capacity of the prestressed composite beams was improved by 25.2%. Based on the 'gamma-method', a theoretical analysis was proposed for calculating the flexural capacity and bending stiffness for both non-prestressed and prestressed TCC beams. The theoretical results showed good agreement with the experimental evidence.

Abstract:The paper was mainly focused on the study of composite trusses,by conducting static loading tests on 3 sets of composite trusses and 3 sets of steel trusses(2 trusses per set).Through the tests,the composite trusses and steel trusses were compared in mechanic performance,rigidity,deformation,and moment capacity,etc.After comparing,the conclusions were drawn that in the composition,the mechanical performance of the chords and webs,and structural stability were greatly improved,and the rigidity and moment capacity were increased.So,the composite trusses were more economical for engineering application.It was also proposed the formulas for calculating the shortterm stiffness,deflection and elastic moment capacity,and methods for calculating the ultimate moment capacity for composite trusses,which all were verified by the test results.

Abstract:In order to explore the toughening performance and failure mechanism of hollow slab beams strengthened with prestressed steel strand polyurethane cement composite, three test beams (L1–L3) were strengthened and one test beam (L0) was used as a comparison. The influence of different tensile stresses of steel strand and fiber additions on the flexural bearing capacity of the hollow slab beams, was studied. The cracking characteristics, load deflection relationship, ductility and strain of each test beam were compared and analyzed. The test results showed that the toughened material was well bonded to the hollow slab beam and the steel strand, which effectively inhibited the development of cracks in the test beams. The flexural bearing capacity of the strengthened test beams was significantly improved. The use of prestressed steel strand polyurethane cement composite material effectively improved the flexural bearing capacity of the test beams, and this reinforcement process can be further extended to engineering applications.

Abstract:The U-shaped steel-encased composite beam is a new type of steel–concrete composite structure comprising concrete filled in a variable U-shaped steel structure. The steel and concrete are combined by shear connectors arranged on the web and bottom plate. Compared with traditional composite beams, this beam better utilises the steel, exhibits superior mechanical performance, and is more suitable for constructing composite structures. To study the mechanical behaviour of this type of beam under static load, four small-scale simply supported specimens were tested. Their main parameters were height, thickness of the encasing steel plate, and length of the shear span. The failure modes, load–displacement curves, distribution of strain along the section height, and slip of the encasing steel plate were investigated. The specimens exhibited typical failure modes such as oblique section shear failure, mixed bending failure, and longitudinal slip failure. Based on the simplified plastic theory and the experimental results, formulae for calculating the flexural bearing capacity of the composite beam under a positive bending moment, bearing capacity considering slip, and shear bearing capacity of the oblique section were derived. This paper presents experimental research and a theoretical analysis for the engineering application of U-shaped steel-encased composite beams.

Abstract:An externally prestressed steel-concrete composite beam is a new type of structural member combining a steel-concrete composite beam and prestressing technique.Compared with traditional steel-concrete composite beams,prestressed steel-concrete composite beams have six major advantages: 1) increasing the ultimate loading capacity;2) extending the elastic range of structural behavior;3) improving the fatigue and fracture behavior;4) fully utilizing the materials and reducing the structural height and weight;5) decreasing the deformation under service loading;6) being helpful to the crack-width control.Based on the review of available research work of externally prestressed steel-concrete composite beams,the research projects to be conducted are proposed.

Abstract:The experimental and theoretical analysis of Steel HSC(High Strength Concrete) composite beams under static concentrate lateral loads were presented. Eight tests of Steel HSC composite beams had been performed. The bending capacity of Steel HSC composite beams was studied in this paper. The influences of concrete strength, yield strength of steel beam, width of concrete flange on bending capacity and ductility of Steel HSC composite beams were discussed. Based on the experimental study and theoretical analysis, modification is proposed on the design equations of bending capacity of Steel HSC composite beams in current codes, which expands the scope of application of concrete strength in design formulae and can be provided as the design basis on Steel HSC composite beams.

Abstract:In order to investigate the bending behavior of HSS (high-strength steel)-concrete composite beams under static load, eight simply-supported beams were tested. The eight beams were all full-interaction, and the major parameters included the strength of steel and concrete. Directional monotonic loads were applied and the test measurement included vertical load, deflection, and strain, etc. All specimens failed in bending mode and exhibited good composite action. The bending capacity predicted by simplified plastic theory was in good agreement with test results for this type of beams. By use of simplified plastic theory, the influence of the strength of steel and concrete on bending capacity of composite beam was subjected to parameter analysis. The analysis results show that the yield strength of steel is a more critical factor compared with the concrete strength. This study provides the basis for the application of HSS in steel-concrete composite beams.
Experimental research on concrete filled steel plate composite coupling beams(I) : seismic behavior

Abstract:Six concrete filled steel plate composite coupling beam specimens were tested under cyclic loading. The variable parameters were span-to-height ratio,steel plate thickness and flexure-to-shear capacity ratio. The failure modes of the steel plates include the fracture of the steel plates at beam ends and local buckling of the steel plates. The fracture and fracture propagation were the main factors that caused the loss in shear capacities of the coupling beams. The fracture propagated fast after fracture initiated,and the shear capacities began to degrade in no more than one displacement level. Two local buckling phenomena were observed including compression local buckling at the beam ends and shear buckling of the steel webs. The occurrence and form of local buckling was affected by the steel plate thickness,span-to-height ratio,and fracture of steel plates. Concrete compression failure was not observed in the infill concrete for any of the specimens. The concrete crack patterns were consistent with the deformation of steel plates. The deformability of the specimens without butt weld of the steel webs is evidently better than that of the specimens with butt weld. The hysteretic curves of all the specimens are plump,indicating stable energy dissipation capacity.

Abstract:Several composite sandwich beam specimens with different core materials and different face-thickness-to-span ratios have been developed for the study of failure modes.The relationships among failure modes and loads,material properties and geometric parameters are examined.Failure maps are presented and the failure modes are predicted.The results show that a well agreement is obtained between the experimental results and theoretical analysis.The change of sandwich beam design parameters will cause corresponding change in failure mode.
Experimental study on simply supported RC beams strengthened by steel plate-concrete composite technique

Abstract:Steel plate-concrete composite (SPCC) technique can be applied to the strengthening of reinforced concrete beams. This technique was developed based on the research of SPCC beams. In order to study the structural behavior of RC beams strengthened by SPCC technique, one as-built RC beam model and ten RC beams strengthened by SPCC technique were tested. Three of the beams were strengthened directly; four beams were first loaded and then unloaded, and strengthened in the unloaded state; the other three were loaded and strengthened under load. The load, deflection, strains and crack widths were measured and analyzed. There were two failure modes of the specimens, flexural failure and debonding failure between the interface of new and existing concretes. The beams failed in flexural failure mode demonstrated highly improved load carrying capacity, stiffness and good ductility. The first crack load and ultimate bending capacity can be calculated by elastic and plastic method. However, the existing method for calculating deflection prescribed in codes could not accurately predict the deflection of the strengthened beams.

Abstract:The shear performance of prestressed concrete T-beam strengthened by steel plate-concrete composite is experimentally and numerically investigated in this research. Two specimens are designed and tested before and after strengthening. It is observed that the shear performance and ductility of the strengthened specimen are improved. Failure of the strengthened specimen is caused by the detachment of the strengthening portion. Nonlinear finite element models are developed and benchmarked with test results. Parametric analysis is conducted to study the effect of the connection strength and material strength. It is found that the shear strength of the member increases with increasing connection strength, while the strength of the grout concrete and steel plate also affects the shear strength. The test results and finite element results show that the proposed strengthening technique effectively improves the shear performance of the specimen, and its improvement effect is governed by the connection strength between the existing and grout concrete.
