Abstract:We study the problem of finding complete conformal metrics determined by some symmetric function of the modified Schouten tensor on compact manifolds with boundary; which reduces to a Dirichlet problem. We prove the existence of the solution under some suitable conditions. In particular, we prove that every smooth compact n-dimensional manifold with boundary, with n >= 3, admits a complete Riemannian metric g whose Ricci curvature Ric(g) and scalar curvature R-g satisfydet(Ric(g) - R(g)g) = const.This result generalizes Aviles and McOwen's in the scalar curvature case.
Reverse Riesz Inequality on Manifolds with Ends

Abstract:In our investigation, we focus on the reverse Riesz transform within the framework of manifolds with ends. Such manifolds can be described as the connected sum of finite number of Cartesian products $\mathbb{R}^{n_i} \times \mathcal{M}_i$, where $\mathcal{M}_i$ are compact manifolds. We rigorously establish the boundedness of this transform across all $L^p$ spaces for $1<p<\infty$. Notably, existing knowledge indicates that the Riesz transform in such a context demonstrates boundedness solely within a specific range of $L^p$ spaces, typically observed for $1<p<n_*$, where $n_*$ signifies the smallest dimension of the manifold's ends on a large scale. This observation serves as a significant counterexample to the presumed equivalence between the Riesz and reverse Riesz transforms. Our study illuminates the nuanced behaviour of these transforms within the setting of manifolds with ends, providing valuable insights into their distinct properties. Although the lack of equivalence has been previously noted in relevant literature, our investigation contributes to a deeper understanding of the intricate interplay between the Riesz and reverse Riesz transforms.

Abstract: Let $M_1$, $\cdots$, $M_\ell$ be complete, connected and non-collapsed manifolds of the same dimension, where $2\le \ell\in\mathbb{N}$, and suppose that each $M_i$ satisfies a doubling condition and a Gaussian upper bound for the heat kernel. If each manifold $M_i$ has volume growth either bigger than two or equal to two, then we show that the Riesz transform $\nabla \L^{-1/2}$ is bounded on $L^p(M)$ for each $1<p<2$ on the gluing manifold $M=M_1\#M_2\#\cdots \# M_\ell$.

Abstract:Consider the direct product manifold $M_1 \times \cdots \times M_n$, where $M_i$ ($1 \le i \le n$) are connected complete non-compact Riemannian manifolds satisfying the volume doubling property and Gaussian or sub-Gaussian estimates for the heat kernel. We obtain weak type (1, 1) (so $L^p$-boundedness with $1< p < 2$) for the Riesz transform. As a consequence, we find that neither heat kernel Gaussian estimates nor sub-Gaussian estimates are necessary for weak (1, 1) property of Riesz transform.

Abstract:Let ${\mathscr{L}}=-\text{div}A\nabla$ be a uniformly elliptic operator on $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\ge 2$. Let $\Omega$ be an exterior Lipschitz domain, and let ${\mathscr{L}}_D$ and ${\mathscr{L}}_N$ be the operator ${\mathscr{L}}$ on $\Omega$ subject to the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary values, respectively. We establish the boundedness of the Riesz transforms $\nabla{\mathscr{L}}_D^{-1/2}$, $\nabla {\mathscr{L}}_N^{-1/2}$ in $L^p$ spaces. As a byproduct, we show the reverse inequality $\|{\mathscr{L}}_D^{1/2}f\|_{L^p(\Omega)}\le C\|\nabla f\|_{L^p(\Omega)}$ holds for any $1<p<\infty$. The proof can be generalized to show the boundedness of the Riesz transforms, for operators with VMO coefficients on exterior Lipschitz or $C^1$ domains. The estimates can be also applied to the inhomogeneous Dirichlet and Neumann problems. These results are new even for the Dirichlet and Neumann of the Laplacian operator on the exterior Lipschitz and $C^1$ domains.

Abstract:The Funk, cosine, and sine transforms on the unit sphere are indispensable tools in integral geometry. They are also known to be interesting objects in harmonic analysis. The aim of the paper is to extend basic facts about these transforms to the more general context for Stiefel or Grassmann manifolds. The main topics are composition formulas, the Fourier functional relations for the corresponding homogeneous distributions, analytic continuation, and explicit inversion formulas.

Abstract:Let $x : M \to E^m$ be an isometric immersion of a Riemannian manifold $M$ into a Euclidean $m$-space. Denote by $\Delta$ the Laplace operator of $M$. Then $\Delta$ gives rise to a differentiable map $L :M \to E^m$, called the Laplace map, defined by $L(p)=(\Delta x)(p)$, $p\in M$. Abstract:Let L=-\Delta+V be a Schrödinger operator on R^d, d\geq 3. We assume that V is a nonnegative, compactly supported potential that belongs to L^p(R^d), for some p>d/2. Let K_t be the semigroup generated by -L. We say that an L^1(R^d)-function f belongs to the Hardy space H_L^1 associated with L if sup_{t>0} |K_t f| belongs to L^1(R^d). Abstract:Let 𝒢 be a stratified Lie group and {_j}_1 ≤ j ≤ n a basis for the left-invariant vector fields of degree one on 𝒢. Let Δ = ∑_j = 1^n _j^2 be the sub-Laplacian on 𝒢 and the j^th Riesz transform on 𝒢 is defined by R_j:= _j (-Δ)^-1/2, 1 ≤ j ≤ n. In this paper we give a new version of the lower bound of the kernels of Riesz transform R_j and then establish the Bloom-type two weight estimates as well as a number of endpoint characterisations for the commutators of the Riesz transforms and BMO functions, including the Llog^+L(𝒢) to weak L^1(𝒢), H^1(𝒢) to L^1(𝒢) and L^∞(𝒢) to BMO(𝒢). Moreover, we also study the behaviour of the Riesz transform kernel on a special case of stratified Lie group: the Heisenberg group, and then we obtain the weak type (1,1) characterisations for the Riesz commutators.

Then $ \|f\|_{p,z_0} \le C_p\, \|u\|_{p,z_0}$ for $1<p<\infty$, where $C_p$ is a constant depending only on $p$ and $\|u\|_{p,z_0}^p$ is defined to be the value at $z_0$ of the least harmonic majorant of $|u|^p$. $L^p$-boundedness of Riesz transforms on solvable extensions of Carnot groups

Abstract:Let $G=N\rtimes \mathbb{R}$, where $N$ is a Carnot group and $\mathbb{R}$ acts on $N$ via automorphic dilations. Homogeneous left-invariant sub-Laplacians on $N$ and $\mathbb{R}$ can be lifted to $G$, and their sum is a left-invariant sub-Laplacian $\Delta$ on $G$. We prove that the first-order Riesz transforms $X \Delta^{-1/2}$ are bounded on $L^p(G)$ for all $p\in(1,\infty)$, where $X$ is any horizontal left-invariant vector field on $G$. This extends a previous result by Vallarino and the first-named author, who obtained the bound for $p\in(1,2]$. The proof makes use of an operator-valued spectral multiplier theorem, recently proved by the authors, and hinges on estimates for products of modified Bessel functions and their derivatives.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a new technique which we call representation theory of the real hyperrectangle, which describes how to compute the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of certain matrices arising from hyperrectangles. We show that these matrices arise naturally when analyzing a number of different algorithmic tasks such as kernel methods, neural network training, natural language processing, and the design of algorithms using the polynomial method. We then use our new technique along with these connections to prove several new structural results in these areas, including: $\bullet$ A function is a positive definite Manhattan kernel if and only if it is a completely monotone function. These kernels are widely used across machine learning; one example is the Laplace kernel which is widely used in machine learning for chemistry. $\bullet$ A function transforms Manhattan distances to Manhattan distances if and only if it is a Bernstein function. This completes the theory of Manhattan to Manhattan metric transforms initiated by Assouad in 1980. $\bullet$ A function applied entry-wise to any square matrix of rank $r$ always results in a matrix of rank $< 2^{r-1}$ if and only if it is a polynomial of sufficiently low degree. This gives a converse to a key lemma used by the polynomial method in algorithm design. Our work includes a sophisticated combination of techniques from different fields, including metric embeddings, the polynomial method, and group representation theory.
