Abstract:In classical linguistic modelling for imprecise concepts and uncertain reasoning, a basic idea is to use fuzzy sets to describe the semantics of imprecise concepts, the theoretic foundation of this modelling is fuzzy logic. But in some practical applications, the determination of membership functions associated with vague concepts is difficult or impossible. In this paper, we present a new linguistic modelling technique based on the semantic similarity relation among linguistic labels. In this new linguistic model, a fuzzy relation is utilized to represent the semantic relation among linguistic labels. The elements in the fuzzy relation are interpreted as the degrees of similarities or the degrees of semantic overlapping between the corresponding linguistic labels. We develop an inference method for computing the degree of similarity between any two linguistic expressions which are the logic formulas generated by applying the logic connectives to the linguistic labels. This inference method utilizes the consonant mass assignment functions induced from the fuzzy similarity relation on linguistic labels. We show that the linguistic model presented in this paper satisfies some perfect properties, e.g. the excluded middle law, law of non-contradiction. This new linguistic modelling is illustrated finally in a linguistic decision-making example.

Abstract:Concepts are basic elements of natural language processing, studying on concept representation and transformation between connotation and extension become more and more important. Multi-granularity concept extraction is still a difficult problem in uncertainty knowledge representation. Cloud model is an uncertainty cognition model, which realizes the bidirectional transformation between a qualitative concept and quantitative data by Gaussian cloud algorithm. Gaussian cloud transformation provides a method to transform a group of data in problem domain to multiple concepts in different granularities in cognition domain. This paper introduces cloud model and Gaussian cloud transformation algorithm to describe the multi-granularity concepts. A case study is also given to prove the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:The methodology of fuzzy reasoning has been shown to be very useful technology for modeling complex nonlinear systems. However, the most commonly used method for reasoning with fuzzy systems models, the Mamdani-Zadeh paradigm, faces many criticisms, particularly from the probability community. A new mathematical representation of linguistic concepts is presented in this paper. With the new model of normal compatibility clouds and a virtual rule engine, a novel uncertainty reasoning technology is proposed. It not only serves as a foundation of linguistic control, but also integrating fuzziness and randomness in an inseparable way. A case study is given to clean up many doubts raised in the debate between fuzzy theory and probability theory researchers, and to give a good interpretation of the Mamdani-Zadeh operations for the defuzzification strategy as well. The architecture of such a controller shows the advantages in hardware implementations.

Abstract:In fuzzy model, the consequent of fuzzy rule is often determined with degrees of belief or credibility because of vague information originating from evidence not strong enough and “lack of specificity” In this paper, we present a fuzzy model incorporated with fuzzy Dempster-Shafer Theory The consequent of fuzzy rule is not fuzzy propositions, but fuzzy Dempster-Shafer granules The salient aspect of the work is that a very simplified analytic output of fuzzy model which is a special case of Sugeno-type fuzzy model is achieved when all fuzzy sets in fuzzy partition of the output space have the same power (the area under the membership function), and the determination of basic probability assignments associated with fuzzy Dempster-Shafer belief structure using fuzzy Naive Bayes The construction method of fuzzy Naive Bayes and an learning strategy generating fuzzy rules from training data are proposed in this paper A well-known example about time series prediction is tested, the prediction results show that our fuzzy modeling is very efficient and has strong expressive power to represent the complex system with uncertain situation.

Abstract:In linguistic collective decision, the main objective is to select the best alternatives using linguistic evaluations provided by multiple experts. This paper presents a collective decision model, which is able to deal with complex linguistic evaluations. In this decision model, the linguistic evaluations are represented by linguistic expressions which are the logic formulas obtained by applying logic connectives to the set of basic linguistic labels. The vagueness of each linguistic expression is implicitly captured by a semantic similarity relation rather than a fuzzy set, since each linguistic expression determines a semantic similarity distribution on the set of basic linguistic labels. The basic idea of this collective decision model is to convert the semantic similarity distributions determined by linguistic expressions into probability distributions of the corresponding linguistic expressions. The main advantage of this proposed model is its capability to deal with complex linguistic evaluations and partial semantic overlapping among neighboring linguistic labels.

Abstract:Decisions are usually made based on not only the performances of alternatives but also are implied by how the performances satisfy the decision makers’ aspiration levels. This paper presents a linguistic aspiration-based solution to qualitative decision-making (QDM) where the aspiration levels and performances can be expressed by complex linguistic expressions (CLEs) such as hesitant fuzzy linguistic term sets and linguistic terms with weakened hedges. The proposed approach can deal with complex problems, which involve multi-criteria, multi-groups of experts, and multi-granular linguistic information. Based on the conventional aspiration-based approaches, the value function is defined by the probability of a CLE achieving its linguistic aspiration level. The performance of the proposed QDM approach is then demonstrated by solving the problem regarding the provider evaluation and selection. The proposed approach extends the range of available natural linguistic expressions that can be considered and used by experts and emphasizes the role of linguistic aspiration levels in QDM.
A QoS Guarantee Framework for Cloud Services Based on Bayesian Prediction

Abstract:With the quality of service (QoS) of cloud services becoming increasingly concerned, how to ensure that the QoS of cloud services can meet the users' QoS requirement has become a focus of the study on cloud computing. However, the QoS of cloud services is dynamic regularly, we propose a QoS guarantee framework for cloud services and the Bayesian prediction method is used to predict QoS of cloud service. In our framework, cloud system can monitor and predict the QoS of cloud services in real-time, not only during the selection of cloud services, but also during the execution of cloud services. Once QoS prediction results show that some QoS violations will occur, cloud system will take measures to avoid the occurrence of QoS violations. We use the cloud simulation software called CloudSim for the experiment and the results demonstrate that compared with ARIMA and other prediction methods, our Bayesian prediction method has higher accuracy. Moreover, our QoS guarantee framework can greatly reduce the probability of QoS violation.
A Fuzzy-Rough Based Approach For Time-Series Prediction

Abstract:A new time-series prediction method is proposed using rough set and fuzzy set theories. The rough set theory allows to obtain a linguistic description of time-series, whereas the fuzzy logic theory allows to generate numerical values of the time-series starting from its linguistic description. With this new approach, a reduction fuzzy rule base is generated from the history input-output data pairs to approximate a nonlinearity function The computer simulation results for prediction Mackey-Glass chaotic time series show that this new method is effective and has good performance.

Abstract:With developments in cloud computing and big data, the term “cloud” has become a household name owing to its characteristics of smartness and connectedness. Cloud-based platforms are associated with people. However, multi-objective decision-making problem in cloud platforms has not been extensively studied. There is no consensus on the reasonable and effective implementation of the decision-making model to select the optimum design scheme in a cloud platform and its establishment to objectively evaluate its significance. In this study, to efficiently and accurately realize the optimal selection of design scheme, a fuzzy evaluation mechanism in handling the vagueness and uncertainty is established, with the advantage of quality function deployment and strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm in decision analysis. A case study is provided to validate the proposed approach in cloud platforms. To reveal the advantages of the proposed method, it was compared with other methods such as the requirement-scenario-experience evaluation framework and a rough number-based integrated method. MATLAB programming was used for this comparison and accuracy certification. The result shows that the proposed model is more efficient and dynamic and provided users with multidimensional evaluation based on open and distributed resources system.

Abstract:Randomness and fuzziness are the two most important uncertainties inherent in human cognition, which have attracted great attention in artificial intelligence research. In this paper, regarding linguistic terms or concepts as the basic units of human cognition, we propose a new cognitive model—cloud model, which can synthetically describe the randomness and fuzziness of concepts and implement the uncertain transformation between a qualitative concept and its quantitative instantiations. Furthermore, by analyzing in detail the statistical properties of normal cloud model, that is, an important kind of cloud models based on normal distribution and Gauss membership function, we show that normal cloud model can not only be viewed as a generalized normal distribution with weak constraints but also avoid the flaw of fuzzy sets to quantify the membership degree of an element as an accurate value between 0 and 1 and, therefore, may be more adaptive for the uncertainty description of linguistic concepts. Finally, two demonstration examples about the fractal evolution of plants and network topologies based on cloud models are given to illustrate the promising applications of cloud models in some more complex knowledge representation tasks. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Cloud environment is associated with people and it has become a hot research topic owing to its characteristics of smartness. An increasing number of service providers is clustered in the cloud environment. However, the study of optimal selection of service team has not been extensively studied. To solve the problem of optimal decision-making for service team in the cloud environment, a novel hybrid decision-making approach based on improved rough set theory is proposed. There are three steps in the improved approach. First, the relationship between user requirements and team elements is analysed using the least squares method and quantification theory, and an evaluation index system for the virtual team based on user's personalised needs is constructed. Second, by combining the rough set theory and intuitionistic fuzzy number, the weight of evaluation index of the virtual team is determined. Third, a decision-making system based on the rough approximation method is developed to compare and rank the alternatives. The concepts of rough boundary and rough number are introduced to express more integrated information in handling vagueness and uncertainty. Finally, the validity and feasibility of this method are verified using the example of building a virtual team in a cloud service environment.

Abstract:Under the environment with the increasing,market competition, because of the intangible and various uncertain factors, the error of the common.forecast model is greater. In the paper, a new method for the second forecasting based on the combined models (SFBCM) is presented. In the method, a few forecast results of some common forecast models are used for learning and training the BP network, the other results of some common forecast models are used for the second forecasting by the trained BP network. The arithmetic of the method and,its. process are researched based on the comparisons of some general forecast models, software is developed. The example of forecasting the output of car in China and the, application in an enterprise are showed. The Second Forecast Based on the Combined Models is a feasible method for the market forecast and decision-making when the market changes greatly.
A Quantum Expectation Value Based Language Model with Application to Question Answering

Abstract:Quantum-inspired language models have been introduced to Information Retrieval due to their transparency and interpretability. While exciting progresses have been made, current studies mainly investigate the relationship between density matrices of difference sentence subspaces of a semantic Hilbert space. The Hilbert space as a whole which has a unique density matrix is lack of exploration. In this paper, we propose a novel Quantum Expectation Value based Language Model (QEV-LM). A unique shared density matrix is constructed for the Semantic Hilbert Space. Words and sentences are viewed as different observables in this quantum model. Under this background, a matching score describing the similarity between a question-answer pair is naturally explained as the quantum expectation value of a joint question-answer observable. In addition to the theoretical soundness, experiment results on the TREC-QA and WIKIQA datasets demonstrate the computational efficiency of our proposed model with excellent performance and low time consumption.

Abstract:Analyzing system with sparse rule based model has been an important research topic in field of intelligent system. To analyze the sparse rule based model whose domain of antecedent variable is not decomposed and consequent results are restricted in a finite set, this paper proposes a novel analysis approach to qualitative system founded on ternary qualitative analysis theory and presents its algorithm. As shown by an example in this paper, the new approach can be used to analyze such model effectively.

Abstract:Based on multi-layer state space model, the paper proposes a five-layer energy information hierarchical model, and presents a rank normal cloud conversion model to complete the transforming between energy grade and value. To meet the demands of the research, the rank conversion cloud includes two parts, the single energy rank conversion cloud and the integrated energy rank conversion cloud. Finally, the experiment shows that the model can better solve uncertainty problems of the fuzziness brought by grading and randomness along with investigation, and its practicality is better.

Abstract:A new approach to model and control an unknown system using subjective uncertain rules is proposed. This method is established by combining the grey system theory and the qualitative simulation method. The proposed approach mainly contains three steps. In the first step, subjective uncertain rules are accumulated gradually during cognizing the system; the mapping relations between the system inputs and outputs are built and represented using the grey qualitative matrix in the second step; in the third step,the generalized whitening function is defined to realize the transformation between qualitative and quantitative information. Besides the theoretical results, two sets of simulations based on a water level control system are conducted comparatively to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The water level expectation is set to be constant in the first set, while it changes in the second set. The simulation results show that the proposed method tracks the water level expectation well. By combining the proposed method with proportional-integral-derivative(PID) or fuzzy logic controller(FLC), it can be concluded that the system can reach the stable state more quickly and the overshoot can also be reduced compared to using PID or FLC alone.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a theoretical framework of fuzzy reasoning model under quotient space structure. It consists of (1) introducing quotient space structure into fuzzy sets, i.e., constructing fuzzy set representations of different grain-size spaces and their relationships; (2) introducing the concept of fuzzy sets into quotient space theory, i.e., introducing fuzzy equivalence relation and discussing its corresponding reasoning in different grain-size spaces; and (3) discussing the relationship and transformation among different granular computing methodologies. The framework proposed is aimed to combine two powerful abilities in order to enhance the efficiency of fuzzy reasoning: one is the ability of computing with words based on fuzzy set methodology, the other is the ability of hierarchical problem solving based on quotient space approach.

Abstract:Fuzzy sets theory cannot describe the data comprehensively, which has greatly limited the objectivity of fuzzy time series in uncertain data forecasting. In this regard, an intuitionistic fuzzy time series forecasting model is built. In the new model, a fuzzy clustering algorithm is used to divide the universe of discourse into unequal intervals, and a more objective technique for ascertaining the membership function and nonmembership function of the intuitionistic fuzzy set is proposed. On these bases, forecast rules based on intuitionistic fuzzy approximate reasoning are established. At last, contrast experiments on the enrollments of the University of Alabama and the Taiwan Stock Exchange Capitalization Weighted Stock Index are carried out. The results show that the new model has a clear advantage of improving the forecast accuracy.

Abstract:The fuzziness and randomness are significant epistemic uncertainty within the qualitative categorization of the two critical factors, the frequency and severity, which are not fully considered in the traditional risk matrix. This paper mainly proposes a cloud risk matrix method for the risk assessment of process safety considering the epistemic uncertainty in expert elicitation. The cloud model is employed to provide a mathematical expression for the fuzziness and randomness in the linguistic variables by its two numerical characteristics entropy En and hyperentropy He. An adjusted Mamdani inference algorithm is constructed for the determination of an integrated risk cloud given the value of input variables. And the centroid method is improved to be adapted to the calculation of risk index from the enormous cloud droplets in the integrated risk cloud. A case study of risk assessment for distillation column unit is performed to illustrate the process of cloud risk matrix in detail, and the validity and rationality are verified by contrast to the results from the fuzzy risk matrix. Results indicate the proposed method can handle the randomness of qualitative concepts, which is more suitable to the practical condition. Moreover, the effect of the hyperentropy He on the randomness of risk index is also investigated and discussed for the reference to parameter selection. The proposed cloud risk matrix can provide an effective risk inference tool in a wide range of engineering fields.
