Abstract:The two-phase frictional pressure drop has a dominant effect on multiphase flow systems. Accurate estimation of such parameter is necessary to design many industrial applications. Experimental measurement of pressure drops is costly, cumbersome, and requires specialized equipment. Therefore, engineers rely on existing methods to estimate two-phase frictional pressure drop. In this study, initially the accuracy of several available methods for predicting two-phase frictional pressure drop for different pipe diameters was investigated. Then based on 4124 experimental data points, six multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural networks optimized with different algorithms including Levenberg-Marquardt (LM), Bayesian Regularization (BR) Scaled Conjugate Gradient (SCG), Resilient Backpropagation (RB), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Genetic Algorithm (GA); and one Radial Basis Function (RBF) neural network model were proposed for the same task. The data sets include multiphase flow pressure drop, velocities, densities and viscosities of liquid and gas phases, volumetric quality, mass flow rate and inner diameter of horizontal pipes in a very wide range. Statistical error analysis indicates that MLP neural network optimized with GA (MLP-GA) predicts the entire data set with Root mean Square Error of 0.525 and Average Absolute Relative Error percentage of 6.722. Both statistical and graphical error analysis confirmed the superiority of the proposed model over empirical and numerical literature models for predicting multiphase flow pressure drop in horizontal pipes. Furthermore, the results of the relevancy factor revealed that the mass velocity has the highest direct impact on pressure drop, as a higher value of pressure drop is observed with increasing mass velocity.
