Abstract:Three-dimensional photonic crystals, also known as band gap materials, have broad potential applications in the area of optical devices, biochemical sensors, information transmission and storage, etc. Since the concept of 3D photonic crystals was first proposed in 1987, scientists have devoted themselves to the preparation of 3D photonic crystals with different materials and different topologies in various methods. In this article, various methods reported in recent years are reviewed and divided into three types, " top-down method ", " bottom-up method " and "template-assisted method". Representative examples is given of every method, and its advantage, shortcoming and applicable scope are evaluated.

Abstract:Photonic crystals were periodic optical structures that were capable of generating photonic band gaps ,analogous to the way of electronic band gaps generated by periodic atomic structure . Since it was first introduced by Yablonovitch and John in 1987,great interest has been generated in this field . This review was devoted to the fabrication techniques of 3D photonic crystals, especially in the recent progress . We aim to stimulate the imaginations of researchers in diverse fields who might benefit from the possibilities afforded by photonic crystals and turn them into realities.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) composite colloidal photonic crystals with SiO2 core and ZnO shell were fabricated on borosilicate glass (BSG) substrate by a two-stage deposition method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements show that both the pre-deposited SiO2 and SiO2/ZnO core–shell structures are oriented with their (111) axes parallel to the substrates. Optical measurement reveals that the periodic arrays exhibit a photonic band gap in the (111) direction. The optical properties of SiO2/ZnO core–shell structures strongly depend on the size dispersions of colloidal spheres and the intrinsic defects in the sample.

Abstract:Properties of photonic band gap and light propagation in one-dimensional multicomponent photonic crystal have been studied with the optical transfer matrix method. We mainly analyze the relation of photonic band-gap property with the arrangement of components, the refractive index and the geometrical thickness. In this study, the methods to change the width and the location of the existing photonic band-gaps in multicomponent photonic crystal are proposed.

Abstract:By utilizing the electrorheological effect, three-dimensional colloidal crystals can be produced, whose lattice structure can be changed from the body-centered-tetragonal lattice to other lattices under the application of electric fields. This paper calculates photonic band structures of such crystals with lattice structure transformation, and demonstrates the existence of complete band gaps for some intermediate lattices. Thus, it becomes possible to use the electrorheological effect to achieve photonic crystals with desired photonic gap properties resulting from tunable structures.

Abstract:The three-dimensional colloidal crystal materials have unique optical properties and spatial structure due to their ordered arrangement and have great potential to prepare three-dimensionally ordered microporous (3DOM) materials. This review outlines various methods for preparing three-dimensional colloidal crystals (3DCCs). The preparation methods of commonly used colloidal particles are introduced in detail, and the effects of different parameters on the assembly of 3DCCs are discussed. On this basis, using the colloidal crystal template (CCT) method to prepare 3DOM materials. After that, the common stacking methods and defects of 3DCCs were analyzed. Abstract:Colloidal photonic crystals (CPhCs) consisting of iron oxide magnetic spheres possess high lattice tunability but are generally unstable and difficult to manage in liquid form. We solve the problem by introducing the colloidal spheres into a resin system, which can "freeze" three-dimensional (3D) patterns by photopolymerization. Robust solid-form CPhCs with various structural colors were, therefore, achieved. The "frozen" 3D patterns would,permit not only a systematic exploration on self-assembling dynamics, colloidal crystallography, and PhC physics but also may pave a new application avenue if a solid, but still soft, PhC is shaped or sliced.

Abstract:Monodisperse microspheres with average particle size in the range of 100–600 nm, whose main monomer was styrene, were prepared by soap-free emulsion polymerization. The factors influencing polymer colloidal particle sizes and size distributions were investigated, including initiator concentration, polymerization temperature and hydrophilic monomer amount. Then, six kinds of polymer microspheres with average size from 153 nm to 565 nm were selected to grow colloid photonic crystal by vertical deposition method. Results showed that photonic band gaps could be effectively adjusted by changing the particle size. The obtained photonic crystals were highly ordered face-centered cubic structures. Furthermore, vertical deposition was only suitable for particles with average size less than 300 nm.

Abstract:High quality colloidal photonic crystals made from polystyrene spheres with diameter 240 nm are fabricated by the vertical deposition method. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the transmittance spectrum are used to characterize the properties of the photonic crystal. The SEAT images show that there are few lattice defects. The transmittance of the photonic crystal is above 75% in the pass band at 700 nm and is lower than 5% at the centre of the band gap, respectively. It is found that proper concentration is a very important factor to fabricate the photonic crystal when the diameter of the spheres is lower than 300 nm.

Abstract:Living organisms in nature possess diverse and vibrant structural colors generated from their intrinsic surface micro/nanostructures. These intricate micro/nanostructures can be harnessed to develop a new generation of colorful materials for various fields such as photonics, information storage, display, and sensing. Recent advancements in the fabrication of photonic crystals have enabled the preparation of structurally colored materials with customized geometries using 3D printing technologies. Here, a comprehensive review of the historical development of fabrication methods for photonic crystals is provided. Diverse 3D printing approaches along with the underlying mechanisms, as well as the regulation methods adopted to generate photonic crystals with structural color, are discussed. This review aims to offer the readers an overview of the state-of-the-art 3D printing techniques for photonic crystals, present a guide and considerations to fabricate photonic crystals leveraging different 3D printing methods.

Abstract:Photonic crystals are a new type of synthetic microstructure materials which have periodical refraction index variations in the space and produce photonic band gaps similar to electronic band gaps produced by the crystal potentials of semiconductors. In recent years, intensive research efforts have been devoted to the studies of photonic crystals due to their unique abilities to manipulate and control photon behaviors. It presents a brief introduction to the photonic crystal and structure characteristics. Some major fabrication methods are demonstrated and various applications of photonic crystals, such as photonic crystal fiber, photonic crystal waveguide, photonic crystal laser, are also discussed.

Abstract:We demonstrated that low-velocity quasi-equilibrium evaporation of water from an aqueous colloidal solution of polystyrene microparticles with 220 nm diameter enabled the preparation of a three-dimensional colloidal-air photonic crystal structure without significantly distorting the lattice, and the absorption peak of the structure was observed at around 500 nm. A much stronger photonic band gap effect is expected due to an approximately 30% increase of the dielectric contrast.
