Abstract:The existing mechanisms of adsorptive desulfurization was reviewed from a view of the molecular diffusion and surface adsorption processes in several aspects: molecule size selection, acidic sites effect and the complexation between sorbents and sulfurides. New technologies of adsorptive desulfurization based on the above mechanisms were introduced. It had been indicated that mechanism research of desulfurization had a significant meaning for further development of novel sorbents and new desulfurization techniques.

Abstract:Power ultrasound causes cavitation,heating,and intense agitation of a liquid medium or suspension,and activates chemical processes and enhances heat and mass transfer processes.Ultrasonic vibrations penetrate into different regions of a multiphase system and reach the areas of the interface(small cracks,closed pores) that are inaccessible in other separation methods(conventional methods).Function principle of somochemistry was presented in this paper.The research status with ultrasonic decontaminating heavy/viscous oil-bearing soil and problems were analyzed.It is suggested that as a result of the sonochemical reaction of the polar components of bitumen with the alkaline reagent,a separating agent with surface-active properties was formed.Ultrasonic is beneficial to the appliance of chemical washing in the remediation of heavy/viscous oil contaminated fine soil or soil granule with high clay concentration.

Abstract:Some heavy oil reservoirs with deep burial depths, low permeabilities, high temperatures and high salinities that cannot be thermally recovered or chemically flooded are treated with the "CO2 + chemical agent" compound huff and puff method, and positive results are achieved. However, there are still problems, and a more efficient compound system needs to be developed. This study first determined the design principles for molecular optimization, selected six chemical systems for two crude oils with two viscosities, and then analyzed and evaluated the viscosity reduction performance, increased CO2 solubility performance, and synergistic viscosity reduction performance to obtain the optimal solubilization synergist formula. The results show that the preferred system has a better effect on BN-1 crude oil. For the BN-1 crude oil, the ZR-1 system can increase the amount of dissolved CO2 by more than 30% under 15 MPa, and the synergistic viscosity reduction rate with CO2 can reach 98% at 10 MPa. Therefore, research on CO2 compound systems can improve the synergistic viscosity reduction effect, reduce the dosage of agents, further reduce the cost and increase the efficiency of viscosity reduction technology.

Abstract:The future of fuel supply will undoubtedly involve the utilization of heavy crude oils, including those from nonconventional sources, such as bitumen and oil shale. Because of their dense nature and poor compositional characteristics, heavy oils cannot be admitted straightly as refinery feeds, since the direct processing of such oils hardly produces engine fuels of commercial standard. The currently available refinery setups also require substantial retrofitting in order to process such heavy feeds. Thus, heavy oils must undergo an initial upgrading called hydrotreatment (HDT) by which the feeds are converted to qualified fuel oils or synthetic crude (syncrude) for easy handling. Removing the considerable amount of sulfur (S) and nitrogen (N) compounds present in the heavy crude oils selectively by hydrodesulfurization (HDS) and hydrodenitrogenation (HDN), respectively, is among the most critical and challenging aspects of the upgrading. However, the mechanism of these two reactions, in relation to different catalytic sites, temperature, pressure, and other operation variables, is not fully understood or well-documented. By analyzing the possible reaction routes involved in S and N removal by HDT, this review sets to bridge the gap that has been left void for a long period of time, to serve as a guide for innovative heavy crude oil upgrading technologies. It finally reports the current challenges impeding the speedy inclusion of heavy crude oils into the global oil supply stream, and proffer perspective solutions together with future research trends.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The emission of sulfur oxides can have adverse effects on the environment. Biodesulfurization of fossil fuels is attracting more and more attention because such a bioprocess is environmentally friendly. Some techniques of desulfurization have been used or studied to meet the stricter limitation on sulfur content in China. Recent advances have demonstrated the mechanism and developments for biodesulfurization of gasoline, diesel and crude oils by free cells or immobilized cells. Genetic technology was also used to improve sulfur removal efficiencies. In this review, we summarize recent progress mainly in China on petroleum biodesulfurization.

Abstract:It is difficult to make the sulfur of dibenzothiophene (DBT) and Cx-DBT contact with hydrogenation catalyst because of the existence of steric hindrance. Therefore, as the main technological process of desulfurization of diesel oil, the ability of catalytic hydrogenation (HDS) to remove the main organic sulfur compounds in diesel oil such as DBT and Cx-DBT is relatively low. The study aimed at the treatment of catalytic diesel oil whose sulfur content was 3358 μg/g by a process that combined HDS with biodesulfurization (BDS). The results showed that the sulfur content of catalytic diesel oil was less than 20 μg/g; further using gas chromatography with atomic emission detector (GC-AED) to detect the distribution of sulfur compounds in diesel oil before and after desulfurization, it indicated that the technology that combined HDS with BDS could remove most of DBT and Cx-DBT in catalytic diesel oil effectively and showed favorable applied foreground.

Abstract:With the growing demand for gasoline and diesel fuel and the shortage of conventional oil reserves, there has been extensive interest in upgrading technologies for unconventional feedstocks such as heavy oil. Slurry bed reactors with high tolerance to heavy oil have been extensively investigated. Among them, dispersive MoS2 is favored for its excellent hydrogenation ability for heavy oil even under harsh reaction conditions such as high pressure and high temperature, its ability to effectively prevent damage to equipment from deposited coke, and its ability to meet the requirement of high catalyst dispersion for slurry bed reactors. This paper reviews the relationship between the structure and hydrogenation effectiveness of dispersive molybdenum disulfide, the hydrogenation mechanism, and the improvement of its hydrogenation performance by adding defects and compares the application of molybdenum disulfide in heavy oil hydrogenation, desulfurization, deoxygenation, and denitrification. It is found that the current research on dispersive molybdenum disulfide catalysts focuses mostly on the reduction of stacking layers and catalytic performance, and there is a lack of research on the lateral dimensions, microdomain regions, and defect sites of MoS2 catalysts. The relationship between catalyst structure and hydrogenation effect also lags far behind the application of MoS2 in the precipitation of hydrogen, etc. Oil-soluble and water-soluble MoS2 catalysts eventually need to be converted to a solid sulfide state to have hydrogenation activity. The conversion history of soluble catalysts to solid-type catalysts and the key to their improved catalytic effectiveness remain unclear.

Abstract:In situ catalytic upgrading of heavy oil decomposes viscous heavy oil underground through a series of complex chemical and physical reactions with the aid of an injected catalyst, and permits the resulting lighter components to flow to the producer under a normal pressure drive. By eliminating or substantially reducing the use of steam, which is prevalently used in current heavy oil productions worldwide and is a potent source of contamination concerns if not treated properly, in situ catalytic upgrading is intrinsically environmental-friendly and widely regarded as one of the promising techniques routes to decarbonize the oil industry. The present review provides a state-of-the-art summarization of the technologies of in situ catalytic upgrading and viscosity reduction in heavy oil from the aspects of catalyst selections, catalytic mechanisms, catalytic methods, and applications. The various types of widely used catalysts are compared and discussed in detail. Factors that impact the efficacy of the in situ upgrading of heavy oil are presented. The challenges and recommendations for future development are also furnished. This in-depth review is intended to give a well-rounded introduction to critical aspects on which the in situ catalytic application can shed light in the development of the world's extra heavy oil reservoirs.

Abstract:With the implementation of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) marine fuel oil sulfur restriction policy in 2020, the desulfurization technology of marine residual fuel oil has received more attention from the industry. Heavy feedstock is the main component of marine residual fuel oil, and this paper introduces some of the heavy feedstock desulfurization technologies, mainly hydrodesulfurization, oxidation desulfurization, reactive metal desulfurization, adsorption desulfurization, biological desulfurization and extraction desulfurization. The respective advantages, disadvantages and applicability of these heavy feedstock desulfurization technologies are summarized.

Abstract:Strain Rhodococcus sp. 1awq is capable of removing sulfur from organosulfur-containing compounds via the “4S pathway. Desulfurization of model oil by biocatalyst of strain 1awq was investigated. During the growing process, 6.7 g/L of biomass is achieved when dibenzothiophene (DBT) is dissolved in n-tetradecane (C14) and served as the sole sulfur source for bacterial cell cultivation, which is over one-fold than that cultivated with DBT dissolved in ethanol absolute. In model oil and aqueous phase reactions by resting cells, 2.56 mmol/L of the end product 2-hydroxybiphenyl (2-HBP) is obtained when the oil/water ratio (v/v) is 1∶3 in the model oil reaction, over five-fold more than the 0.44?mmol/L of 2-HBP produced in the aqueous phase reaction. More than 90% of DBT is removed in the 20%～60% model oil reaction system. In model oil with high concentrations of DBT, 10 mmol/L of DBT is completely degraded within 24 h by resting cells, while 97.1% of 20 mmol/L DBT, 50.4% of 30 mmol/L DBT, 48.7% of 40 mmol/L DBT and 39.8% of 50 mmol/L DBT are degraded respectively. The production rate of 2-HBP in C14 with 20 mmol/L DBT is 0.373 μmol·g -1·min -1, while that with 40 mmol/L and 50 mmol/L DBT are 0.268 and 0.213 μmol·g -1·min -1 respectively, suggesting a promising prospect for actual desulfurization of diesel oil.
Biodegradability of Heavy-Oils in Soil of an Aeration Zone

Abstract:This paper studies the bioremediation of oily soils through biodegradation of the heavy-oils augmented by the addition of high-efficiency microbes and half-decomposed stock manure to ameliorate the microbe environment. The bioremediation of the heavy-oils was evaluated by weighing after Soxhlet extraction to study the relationship between the microorganism activity and the hydrocarbon degradation. The results show that the half-life of the heavy-oils is long, and that only 20% of the hydrocarbons has been biodegraded within 90 days. The total number of microorganisms and the dehydrogenase activity are related to the hydrocarbon biodegradation, indicating that they are both good indicators of the bioremediation of oily soils.

Isolation And Characterization Of New Bacterial Strains For Degrading Sulfur Heterocyclics

Abstract:Two pure strains (1# and 19#), which can efficiently desulfurize dibenzothiophene (DBT) via 4S pathway, were isolated and studied for desulfurizing activity of resting cells in aqueous and oil/aqueous two-phase system. The degradation ability of new selected strains to other sulfur heterocyclics was also studied. n-Hexadecane containing DBT was selected as model oil, for n-hexadecane is a representative aliphatic hydrocarbon in diesel oils. The desulfurizing rate in the oil/aqueous system was higher than that in the aqueous system, indicating that the presence of organic phase could enhance the activity of desulfurization. The presence of hexadecane could minimize the inhibition effect of 2-hydroxybiphenyl (HBP) because most of 2-HBP produced would turn into the oil phase. The addition of oil phase would also promote the bioavailability of DBT. Diphenylsulfide showed the lowest degradation rate with 90% of 0.25 mmole/L within 90 hr. The strain of 19# possessed close desulfurization ability with 1# and degraded all of 0.25 mmole/L thiophene, benzothiophene, 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene and 80% of 0.25 mmole/L diphenylsulfide within 10, 40, 40, and 90 hr, respectively. The biodesulfurization processing of various strains was generally specific for the substrates, which might be supposed that the enzymes involved in biodesulfurizing different organic sulfur compounds were varied.
