Ionic Liquids for Green Synthesis of 1,2,3-Triazoles: A systematic Review

Abstract:The ever-increasing demand for hazardous solvents and catalysts for the easier synthesis of important heterocycles useful for humankind in various fields such as medicine, materials science, agrochemicals, etc., led to devastating impacts on the environment, which directly or indirectly affected the ecosystem`s structure and productivity. It has shifted the scientific community's pace towards using eco-friendly and greener solvents, catalysts, materials, and methods for sustainable growth. As a result, there is a personified change in the traditional techniques to environmentally sustainable processes by following green chemistry principles. Hazardous organic solvents and catalysts for synthesizing 1,2,3-triazoles are of global concern. Thus, newer methodologies were designed for eco-friendly catalysts and benign solvents like ionic liquids (ILs) or water. The use of ILs in organic synthesis as a solvent as well as a catalyst has gained tremendous attention in recent eras due to their superior physiochemical properties such as low vapor pressure, non-volatility, non-flammability, excellent conductivity, electrochemical and thermal stability, thereby increasing reactivity, selectivity, catalyst recyclability, and other qualities of chemical reactions. In this review, we have critically screened, divided, and summarized research articles into two significant headings: firstly, synthesis of 1,2,3-triazoles from alkynes using ILs and secondly, synthesis of 1,2,3-triazoles from substrate molecules other than alkynes using ILs. This review would stimulate scientists to adopt environmentally sustainable ILs as green solvents and catalysts for the synthesis process.
