Abstract:Ionic liquids(ILs) are non-volatile,non-flammable and easy-to-recycle organic salts and therefore are viewed as potential replacements of volatile organic compounds(VOCs) and used as green solvents and efficient reaction media to reduce/eliminate environmental problems in chemistry and process industries.In recent years,ILs have been successful used in polymerization reactions not only to diminish the problems resulted from VOCs but also to recycle catalysts and purify polymeric products,to more efficiently control polymerization process and the structure and properties of resultant polymers,and even to directly catalyze polymerizations.This article reviews recent advances in polymerization conducted in ionic liquid media.

Abstract:Ionic liquids, with their unique properties, including low volatility, high polarity, good thermal stability over a wide temperature range and selective dissolving capacity by a proper choice of cations or anions, have attracted increasing interest in the organic transformations as reactioin medium as well as catalyst (ligand). Compared with traditional organic solvents, ionic liquids have great advantages in obtaining products with high isolated yields and good to excellent selectivities, accelerationg reaction rate in some cases, ease of work-up, as well as recycling use with or without catalysts after simply recoveration. The paper reviews the advanced progress in the application of ionic liquids as reaction medium as well as catalysts to organic synthesis, mainly including coupling reaction, Michael addition, Baylis-Hillman reaction, Diels-Alder reaction, Aldol reaction, Knoevenagel condensation, cyclorization reaction, alkylation and acylation, oxidation and reduction etc.
Reactivity of Brönsted Acid Ionic Liquids As Dual Solvent and Catalyst for Fischer Esterifications

Abstract:Several water-stable ionic liquids with different acidity and affinity were synthesized and applied as both solvents and acid catalysts for Fischer esterification of ethanol reacting with four aliphatic carboxylic acids (acetic acid, n-hexanoic acid, lauric acid, and stearic acid). Among the studied ionic liquids, [(n-bu-SO 3 H) MIM][HSO 4 ] (3-butyl-1-(butyl-4-sulfonyl) imidazolium sulfate) and [(n-bu-SO 3 H) MIM][p-TSO] (3-butyl-1-(butyl-4-sulfonyl) imidazolium toluenesulfonate) show higher reactivity for the production of ethyl esters. The catalytic activities of these ionic liquids are strongly dependent on the acidity of their anions and cations, as well as their hydrophilicity and affinity with the reactants. Water refluxing through the condenser may be another important reason for obtaining high conversion of esterification, indicating a water-sequester process is still needed in order to obtain a higher yield of ester in the ionic liquid catalyzed esterification system. Kinetics studies show the conversions of the acids increase with reaction temperature and time, and reach equilibrium within about two hours. The apparent activation energies are 39.1±2.0, 49.7±2.5, 51.4±2.5 and 59.3±3.0 kJ·mol −1 for the formation of ethyl acetate, ethyl n-hexanoate, ethyl laurate and ethyl stearate, respectively.
Catalytic esterification reactions over immobilized Brönsted ionic liquid

Abstract:Three designed and synthesized Brönsted acidic ionic liquids (ILs) [(n-Bu-SO3H) MIm] [HSO4], [(n-Bu-SO3H) MIm] [p-CH3C6H4SO3] and [Et3NH] [HSO4], as well as another commercial ionic liquid [HBIm] [CF3SO3] were used to catalyze the esterification reaction of hexanoic acid and ethanol. Among them, [(n-Bu-SO3H) MIm] [HSO4] exhibited the highest activity, which was later selected to be immobilized on the silica gel by both impregnation and sol-gel methods. The immobilized ILs were then characterized by 1H NMR, elemental analysis, FTIR and activity test. The results showed that the loading amounts of ionic liquid by the impregnation method A, B and sol-gel methods were 15.5%, 20.5% and 40.5% (mass), respectively. For the first time the three immobilized ILs were used to catalyze the esterification of hexanoic acid and ethanol, and the yields of ethyl hexanoate were 75.3%, 92.6% and 92.6%, respectively. However, the activity of the ionic liquid immobilized impregnation decreased rapidly with recycle runs since the load amount of ionic liquid dropped to 3.0% (mass) after 4 recycle runs for method A and dropped to 7.0% (mass) after 8 cycle runs for method B. By contrast, the ionic liquid immobilized by the sol-gel method was much stable, and could be reused for 10 times with only little decrease in activity. Moreover, the sol-gel method immobilized ionic liquid also showed acceptable activity (ester yields > 90.0%) for the esterification of other carboxylic acid with ethanol. Therefore, the sol-gel method is an excellent method for the immobilization of ionic liquid to catalyze esterification reactions. © All Rights Reserved.

Abstract:There is an urgent need to develop green catalytic transesterification technology to reduce liquid waste and instrument corrosion. Ionic liquids with controlled activity, easy recovery, and corrosion resistance have great potential as catalysts for transesterification reactions. In this paper, a series of ionic liquids were prepared using imidazole and ammonium compounds as cations, and sulphuric acid, p‐toluenesulfonate, and bistrifluoromethanesulfonate anions as anions. In comparison, the ionic liquid made from imidazole with H2SO4 (IMIHS) was found to be the best catalyst for the esterification reaction with high speed, high activity, low corrosion, and high stability, and its catalytic performance was superior to that of sulphuric acid. The optimum reaction conditions were as follows: the molar ratio of ethanol to acetic acid was 1:1, the catalyst amount was 5 wt.%, the reaction temperature was 80°C, and the reaction time was 120 min. The maximum yield of ethyl acetate was 66.2% under the optimum reaction conditions. The catalytic activity was not declined obviously by reusing six times. The activation energy of the reaction is 48.748 kJ/mol.

Abstract:We herein report an efficient synthesis of β-glycosyl 1-ester in room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) promoted via silver salt and quaternary ammonium salt (PTC) with good or excellent yields. All products were isolated exclusively as the β-anomers. Four different RTILs, eight metal salts and four quaternary ammonium salts were screened in the glycosylation reaction. The synergistic effect of C6mim·OTf, Ag2O and tetrabutylammonium iodine gave the best results. Their promotion to the system was integral. Thorough study provided insight into the catalytic activity of ionic liquid structure, metal salts and quaternary ammonium salt to these reactions. It is worth mentioning that the yield of aliphatic compound 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-β-D-galactopyranosyl butyrate (3l) was highly improved when using C6mim·OTf as solvent compared with the normal volatile solvents under the same catalysts. This green approach has been proved to be practical and compatible with a wide range from aliphatic to aromatic substrates.

Abstract:Application of ionic liquids in organic synthesis promoted by microwave irradiation as a new green methodology has been attracting great interests. Microwave-assisted organic transformations, using ionic liquids as reaction medium or catalysts, have great advantages in accelerating reaction rate, obtaining products with high recovery yield and good selectivity, ease of work-up, as well as recycling usage of ionic liquids after simply regeneration. The paper reviews the progress of ionic liquids as microwave mediums or catalysts in the fields of organic synthesis, mainly including cyclization, nucleophilic substitution, ring closing metathesis, acylation, rearrangement, polymerization, coupling, oxidation and reduction as well as selective debromination, etc.

Abstract:Esterification of propanoic acid with alcohols in various ionic liquids 1,3-dialkylimidazolium-aluminium(Ⅲ) chloride as the catalyst and reaction medium was investigated.Compared with concentrated sulfuric acid,ionic liquids 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate([BMIm]BF_4)-aluminium(Ⅲ) chloride showed better catalytic activity.The results showed that esters with medium to high conversion and selectivity could be formed,and easily separated from ionic liquids due to their immiscibility.Ionic liquids-aluminium(Ⅲ) chloride could be reused,and the catalytic activity was not decreased obviously after 5 times recycle.This protocol has notable advantages of no need of organic solvents,mild conditions,simple operation,short reaction time,ease work-up,high yields and recycling of the ionic liquid.

Abstract:Ionic liquids have negligibly low vapor pressure, high stability and polarity. They are regarded as green solvents. Enzymes, especially lipases, as well as whole-cell of microbe, are catalytically active in ionic liquids or aqueous-ionic liquid biphasic systems. Up to date, there have been many reports on enzyme-exhibited features and enzyme-mediated reactions in ionic liquids. In many cases, remarkable results with respect to yield, catalytic activity, stability and (enantio-, regio-) selectivity were obtained in ionic liquids in comparison with those observed in conventional media. Accordingly, ionic liquids provide new possibilities for the application of new type of solvent in biocatalytic reactions.
