Abstract:A copolymeric membrane material containing an amine group for CO2 facilitated transport was synthesized by radical polymerization of acrylamide and maleic anhydride. The relative molecular weight and chemical structure of the copolymer were analyzed by viscometric measurement, elemental analysis, and FTIR. The copolymeric membranes were prepared. The sorption behavior as well as the permeabilities of the membranes for pure CO2 and CH4 were investigated. The results show that the copolymeric membrane possesses a higher permeability of CO2 and a lower permeability of CH4. The membrane displays a CO2 permeability of 5×10−12 cm3(STP)/cm2.s.pa, and a CH4 permeability of 2×10−13 cm3(STP)/cm2.s.pa. CO2 sorption behavior of the copolymeric membrane, which can be classified as a dual-mode sorption model, and CH4 sorption behavior of the copolymeric membrane accord with the Fickian diffusion model.

Abstract:Facilitated transport membranes are particularly promising in different separations, as they are potentially able to overcome the trade-off behavior usually encountered in solution-diffusion membranes. The reaction activated transport is a process in which several mechanisms take place simultaneously, and requires a rigorous theoretical analysis, which unfortunately is often neglected in current studies more focused on material development. In this work, we selected and reviewed the main mathematical models introduced to describe mobile and fixed facilitated transport systems in steady state conditions, in order to provide the reader with an overview of the existing mathematical tools. An analytical solution to the mass transport problem cannot be achieved, even when considering simple reaction schemes such as that between oxygen (solute) and hemoglobin (carrier) ( A + C ⇄ A C ), that was thoroughly studied by the first works dealing with this type of biological facilitated transport. Therefore, modeling studies provided approximate analytical solutions and comparison against experimental observations and exact numerical calculations. The derivation, the main assumptions, and approximations of such modeling approaches is briefly presented to assess their applicability, precision, and flexibility in describing and understanding mobile and fixed site carriers facilitated transport membranes. The goal is to establish which mathematical tools are more suitable to support and guide the development and design of new facilitated transport systems and materials. Among the models presented, in particular, those from Teramoto and from Morales-Cabrera et al. seem the more flexible and general ones for the mobile carrier case, while the formalization made by Noble and coauthors appears the most complete in the case of fixed site carrier membranes.

Abstract:In recent years, significant development milestones have been reached in the areas of facilitated transport membranes and ionic liquids for CO2 separations, making the combination of these materials an incredibly promising technology platform for gas treatment processes, such as post-combustion and direct CO2 capture from air in buildings, submarines, and spacecraft. The developments in facilitated transport membranes involve consistently surpassing the Robeson upper bound for dense polymer membranes, demonstrating a high CO2 flux across the membrane while maintaining very high selectivity. This mini review focuses on the recent developments of facilitated transport membranes, in particular discussing the challenges and opportunities associated with the incorporation of ionic liquids as fixed and mobile carriers for separations of CO2 at low partial pressures (<1 atm).

Abstract:Facilitated transport membranes have been extensively applied in a myriad of industrial fields, in view of their distinctive capabilities of selective separation of target species (e.g., ions/small molecules). Despite much progress, it remains challenging to tackle the trade-off relationship between the stability and separation efficiency of these membranes. Herein, we propose a Janus facilitated transport membrane with asymmetric surface wettability and dense/porous structure by decorating a hydrophilic and dense polymer inclusion membrane (PIM) skin layer on the surface of a hydrophobic and microporous polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane to achieve a notable balance between separation efficiency and leakage-resistance. With the hydrophilic PIM skin layer facing aqueous solutions whilst the hydrophobic PVDF membrane towards organic solution during separation process, the Janus facilitated transport membrane remarkably prevents the leakage of the liquids from 66.7% (using the plain PVDF membrane) to negligible. Through a rapid transformation of the transport mechanism from a short-term hopping in the dense PIM skin layer to an unobstructed motion in the microporous PVDF membrane matrix, the separation efficiency of the Janus facilitated transport membrane has been considerably enhanced from 25% (using the PIM) to about 70%. Investigation of the influencing factors on the structures, properties and separation performance of the Janus facilitated transport membrane suggests that the concentration of the PIM casting solution is of particular importance to the formation of the PIM skin layer and the asymmetric dense/porous structure of the membrane. In addition, the Janus facilitated transport membrane exhibits extraordinary mechanical properties and selectivity. Our work demonstrates that the Janus facilitated transport membrane holds great promise and a wide scope in versatile applications in water treatment, water-oil separation, and recovery of metal ions/small molecules in complex systems (e.g., water-oil-metal ions and water-oil-small molecules).

Abstract:Membrane materials with excellent selectivity and high permeability are the key for high-efficiency membrane separation. New-type porous materials have developed as ideal building blocks for molecular sieving membranes due to their inherent properties, such as permanent porosity, high surface area, structural diversity and low mass transfer barriers. In actual industrial promotion and separation applications, porous materials need to be combined with substrates to prepare porous composite membranes. In order to reduce costs and increase processing flexibility, the combination of organic polymer substrates and porous materials has received more attentions. The multifunctional design strategy of the membrane material and membrane structure of porous composite membranes based on the organic subatrates is the key to realize the further improvement of mass transfer. In this review, we focus on the organic matrix porous composite membrane based on the participation of inorganic-organic hybrid materials and organic-organic composite materials, and conduct an in-depth discussion on the transport mechanism of porous composite membranes, and highlight diverse structural control strategies from the perspectives of macrostructural design and microstructural regulation of membrane structures. Finally, the applications of porous composite membrane based on organic substrate in precise molecular sieving are summarized, and the future opportunities and challenges in this field are discussed briefly.

Abstract:Transport phenomena of charged membranes based on the charge models (including the space charge model and the fixed charge model) are cataloged into the three kinds, that is,separation performance,electro-kinetic properties and transport characteristics with respect to the charge effect.Generally,separation performance is expressed by the rejections and permeation fluxes,electro-kinetic properties are specified by the membrane potential and streaming potential, while transport characteristics are summed up by six independent parameters (or coefficients): pure water permeability,reflection coefficient,electro-osmostic coefficient,solute permeability coefficient,electrical conductance and electrical transport number.In this article, the above-mentioned transport phenomena of charged membranes based on the charged models are reviewed in detail.The respective advantages of the space charged model and the fixed charge model applied to charged membranes are described, and the development trend is presented.

Abstract:Abstract With the development of the petrochemical industry, the demand for light olefins is rapidly increasing. The separation of olefin/paraffin by membrane technology can save energy consumption and improve separation efficiency. This article reviews the latest progress in facilitated transport membranes for olefin/paraffin separation. The separation mechanism and common types of facilitated transport membranes are briefly introduced. Meanwhile, the mechanism of carrier deactivation and the corresponding strategies to improve the stability of the membranes are summarized. In concluding, current developments regarding facilitated transport membranes are summarized and directions for future development are proposed.

Abstract:Facilitated transport membranes (FTMs) are a forward-looking technology and have triggered revolutions in many energy-intensive gas separations. However, the precise manipulation of carrier distribution within FTMs, as well as the visualization of membrane structure at the nanoscale, has never been reported. Herein, FTMs are constructed with tunable carrier distribution by a facile ion/molecule self-assembly of protic ionic liquid crystal salts (PILSs), polyol, and ethylene-transport carrier for highly efficient sub-angstrom scale ethylene/ethane (0.416nm/0.443nm) separation. The elaborate regulation of non-covalent interactions by optimizing the ion/molecule compositions within membrane confers the bi-continuous nanostructure of FTMs, resulting in the formation of successive carrier wires and enormous 3D interconnected ethylene transport pathways, which is verified and visualized by molecular dynamics simulations and synchronous small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SWAXS). The as-designed FTMs manifest simultaneously super-high selectivity, excellent ethylene permeance, and robust long-term stability, which exceeds previously reported ethylene/ethane separation membranes. This study clearly draws the first picture of carrier distribution within FTMs, and deep insight into membrane structure will shed light on the design of high-performance separation membranes for energy-intensive gas separations.

Abstract:Mimicking the efficient facilitated transport features of carrier proteins in cytomembranes, constructing facilitated transport pathways in synthetic membranes to achieve the desired performance for task-specific molecules has become attractive. Herein, heterostructured laminates (UGO) were created through in-situ growth of amine-functionalized zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (UiO) on graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets, and subsequent used as support to immobilize Ag+. The as-prepared Ag+@UGO were incorporated into poly (ether-block-amide) (Pebax) matrix to fabricate facilitated transport membrane for pervaporative desulfurization. Densely packed UiO on GO nanosheets increase the inter-particles connectivity of the molecular transport channels and reduce the mass transport resistance, intensifying the permeability. Meanwhile, the uniform immobilization of Ag+ can reversibly interact with thiophene via π-complexation reaction and form continuous facilitated transport pathways, significantly enhancing the selectivity. Accordingly, the resultant membrane acquires separation performance with an optimum permeation flux of 23.40 kg/(m2 h) and enrichment factor of 7.12, achieving 52% and 57% higher than the pristine membrane. This study extends strategies to design high-performance hybrid membranes with facilitated transport mechanism through the well-designed heterostructures as supports to immobilize carriers for molecular separations.

Abstract:The major facilitator superfamily(MFS) constitutes one of the largest secondary active membrane transporter families found on the earth.The diversity of its substrates endows the MFS superfamily with significant role in the interchange of solutes and energy metabolism.Since the first high resolution structure of LacY determined in 2003,crystal structure of five members of the MFS superfamily have been obtained.Combined with the biochemical and biophysical investigations,we now have a better understanding of their transport mechanisms.The review summarized the advancement in the structural and mechanical understanding of the MFS superfamily transporters.
On the transport of CO$_2$ through humidified facilitated transport membranes

Abstract:Membrane-based CO$_2$ removal from exhaust streams has recently gained much attention as a means of reducing emissions and limiting climate change. Novel membranes for CO$_2$ removal include so called facilitated transport membranes (FTMs), which offer very high selectivities for CO$_2$ while maintaining decent permeabilities. Recently, these FTMs have been scaled up from laboratory level to plant-sized pilot modules with promising results. However, the molecular details of CO$_2$ transport in these has not yet been fully unraveled. In this work, experimental studies were combined with quantum-mechanical ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to gain insight into the underlying molecular mechanism of CO$_2$ permeation through FTMs. Various compositions of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the membrane matrix with polyvinyl amine (PVAm), monoethanolamine (MEA), or 4-amino-1-butanol (BA) as carrier molecules were experimentally tested. Our experiments revealed that water was essential for the CO$_2$ transport and a transport superposition was achieved with a mixed composition of PVAm and MEA in PVA. Furthermore, sorption measurements with PVA were conducted with humidified N$_2$ and CO$_2$ to quantify water sorption-induced swelling and its contribution to the gas uptake. As the carbonic acid--amine interaction is assumed to cause transport facilitation, electronic structure-based ab initio molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to study the transport of CO$_2$ in the form of carbonic acid along PVAm polymer chains. In particular, the necessity of local water for transport facilitation was studied at different water contents. The simulations show that transport is fastest in the system with low water content and does not happen in the absence of water.

Mass transport through metal organic framework membranes

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are composed of metal nodes and organic ligands, possess crystal phase, ordered well-defined porous structure and large surface area. Since first reported in 1990, MOFs have attracted extensive attention and the fabrication of MOF membranes has expanded their applications and endowed them with a bright future in various fields. The mass transportation process through MOF membranes is vital during their diverse applications. In this review, the strategies of preparing continuous and well-intergrown MOF membranes are presented firstly. The selective transportation processes of gas molecules, liquid molecules and ions through MOF membranes are discussed in detail, respectively. The effects of pore entrance size, interaction, functional groups decorating on the ligands and guest components on mass transportation have been summarized in this review as well. In addition, MOF membranes with selective transportation performance demonstrate potential in separation, catalysis, energy transformation and storage devices, and so on.

Abstract:The membrane technology has attracted increasing attention in the field of separation and desalination due to its high efficiency, energy saving, environmental protection, and other advantages. However, related mass transfer theories especially under confined conditions (such as reverse osmosis and nanofiltration) lack the understanding of common mass transfer mechanisms and control methods, thereby seriously restricting the design and development of related membrane materials.This article reviews the research progress of separation membranes with confined mass transfer effects in recent years and analyzes the challenges faced by classical mass transfer models under confined mass transfer conditions. The confined mass transfer mechanism, influencing factors, construction methods, and types of preparation materials are summarized. Furthermore, the development of confined mass transfer separation membranes and the problems to be solved are prospected. Nanomaterial-modified membranes with confined mass transfer function are most likely to break through the trade-off effect of high flux and high selectivity. The confined mass transfer mechanism and preparation strategies of separation membranes are rarely reviewed. Hence, this review can provide guidance for new entrants and existing researchers in the field of membrane separation and has certain reference value for the development of confined mass transfer membranes in the future.

A Selective Separation Mechanism for Mono/divalent Cations and Properties of a Hollow-Fiber Composite Nanofiltration Membrane Having a Positively Charged Surface

Abstract:Positively charged nanofiltration (NF) technology is considered a green and low-cost method for mono/divalent cation separation. Nevertheless, the separation rejection mechanisms of these NF membranes have yet to be extensively investigated. In this work, we fabricated a thin-film composite (TFC) hollow-fiber (HF) NF membrane with a positively charged surface via modification of the nascent interfacial polymerization layer using a branched polyethyleneimine (BPEI)/ethanol solution. Then, we extensively investigated its selective separation mechanism for mono/divalent cations. We proposed and proved that there exists a double-charged layer near the membrane surface, which helps to repel the divalent cations selectively via Donnan exclusion while promoting the fast penetration of monovalent cations. Meanwhile, the membrane skin layer is loose and hydrophilic due to the loose BPEI structure and the abundance of amine groups, as well as the changed fabrication conditions. In this way, we achieved very good mono/divalent cation selectivity and relatively high water permeance for the as-prepared HF NF membrane. We also obtained good anti-fouling, anti-scaling, and acid resistance, and long-term stability as well, which are urgently needed during practical application. Furthermore, we successfully amplified this HF NF membrane and proved that it has broad application prospects in mono/divalent cation separation.

Abstract:Research and development progress in the preparation of hollow fiber composite nanofiltration membranes by interfacial polymerization method in recent years is overviewed.The performances of hollow fiber composite nanofiltration membranes fabricated with different substrate membrane materials and at different interfacial polymerization conditions as well as the modification of nanofiltration membrane are introduced in particular.In addition,the ways to improve the performance of hollow fiber composite nanofihration membranes through modifying the substrate membrane or adding additives during interfacial polymerization are discussed.Finally,the problems that may be encountered in industrial scale-up for different types of products are analyzed.
Facilitated Transport Membranes for Olefin/Paraffin Separation-An Overview

Abstract:A review covers the development of facilitated transport membranes (FTM) in recent 20 yr. FTM is an alternative process for olefin/paraffin separation, based on reversible chemical complexation, which has many advantages over traditionally used expensive technologies such as cryogenic distillation, extractive distillation, or adsorption technologies. In FTIR process, transition metal ions are used as facilitated transport carriers, which allow the olefins to be selectively transported through the membranes. The FTM can give a high olefin/paraffin selectivity to yield permeate with high olefin purity. The operation conditions can greatly affect the selectivity. The mechanism of olefin-metal ion complexation and the conditions affecting the properties of FTM for iso-butane/iso-butene separation were also described.

Abstract:A water-soluble copolymeric membrane material containing tertiary amine and carboxyl groups for CO2 facilitated transport has been synthesized by radical polymerization of DMAEMA(2-N,N-dimethyl aminoethyl methacrylate)-AA(acrylic acid). The composition the copolymer was determined by elemental analysis, the intrinsic viscosity [ƞ] of the copolymer was determined with an Ubbelohde viscometer. The composite membranes were prepared by casting solution of poly(2-N,N-dimethyl aminoethyl methacrylate-co-acrylic acid sodium) on the various support layer. The copolymeric membranes were crosslinked by heat treatment at 120°C. The effects of the molecular weight and carrier (tertiary amine and carboxyl groups) content of the copolymer, the support layer of the composite membrane, CO2 content in CO2/CH4 mixed gas, on the membranes separation performance were investigated. The result shows that the CO2/CH4 selectivity of the composite membrane increased but the CO2 permeation rate decreased with increasing molecular weight of the copolymer, both the CO2/CH4 selectivity of and the CO2 permeation rate had a maximum against the carrier (tertiary amine and carboxyl groups) content of the copolymer. The permeation performance of the composite membrane for CO2/CH4 mixed gas was not as good as those obtained with pure CO2 and CH4 gas because of the coupling effects between CO2 and CH4.

Herein, a facilitated transport membrane with continuous pathway was constructed by the in-situ interlinkage of mobile aniline with the fixed carriers distributing along electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers. In this membrane, fixed amine carriers are introduced through the alkalinous hydrolysis of PAN fibers (HPAN), and are distributed along the HPAN fibers to construct a long-range continuous transport pathway for CO 2 . The mobile aniline carriers are introduced into the interfibrous voids of the HPAN nanofibers mat (NFM) by in-situ polymerization of Poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA), which interlink the fixed amine carriers to achieve the facilitated transport pathway continuous completely. And the fixed amine and mobile aniline carriers are demonstrated to co-exist in the An/PEO@HPAN membrane (NFCM) by the FTIR and XPS results. Meanwhile, the XRD and DSC results indicate that the introduction of aniline increases the free volume of PEO matrix, which is beneficial for enhancing CO 2 permeation. Therefore, the 10 wt% An/PEO@HPAN-3h NFCM presents 90.81 % and 13.15 % increases in CO 2 permeability and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity under mixed gas at 0.3 MPa in contrast with the membrane without mobile aniline carriers. Under mixed gas conditions, this NFCM exhibits CO 2 permeability of 202.93 Barrer and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 83.89 at 0.1 MPa, reaching the 2019 McKeown upper bound.
