Abstract:A positively charged composite nanofiltration (NF) hollow fiber membrane was prepared by interfacial polymerization with polyethyleneimine (PEI) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) as the reactive monomers. The preparation conditions were optimized, and a relatively simple preparation process was developed. In the optimized preparation process, Na3PO4 is not needed and the heat-treatment process can be omitted, which saves operation time and reduces cost. The surface morphology and chemical structure of the resulting composite NF membrane were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Pure water flux, contact angle, molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) and surface zeta potential of the composite NF membrane were also evaluated. The rejection of the NF membrane for MgCl2 (1g/L aqueous solution at 0.4MPa) was above 97.0%, and the permeate flux was approximately 35.3L/m2h. Furthermore, the NF membrane also showed excellent rejection performance for different dye molecules. The rejections of the NF membrane to brilliant blue KN-R, cationic red X-GTL, acid red B, rhodamine B and cationic gold yellow X-GL were 99.9%, 99.8%, 98.8%, 97.5% and 96.7%, respectively.

Abstract:A novel positively charged nanofiltration membrane was designed and prepared by a simultaneous crosslinking/quatemization of poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide)/polyethyleneimine (PMIA/PEI) blend precursor membrane. To improve the PEI retention ratio during precursor membrane fabrication, propanetriol glycidyl ether (PTGE) was used as a cross-linker. For nanofiltration preparation, the cross-linking time and p-xylylene dichloride (XDC) concentration were optimized. A comprehensive characterization of the nanofiltration membrane was conducted in terms of chemical composition, surface morphology, surface charge, pore structures and separation properties. Results indicated that the density of the positive charge increased after the simultaneous cross-linking/quaternization. The nanofiltration membrane with pore size in the range of 0.5-2 nm exhibited high MgCl2 rejection of 94.4% and water permeability of 37.3 L M-2 h(-1) at 0.4 MPa. Furthermore, to make a comparison between the PMIA/PEI nanofiltration membrane and the other PEI based nanofiltration membranes in the previous studies, an empirical upper bound correlation between water permeability and water/salt selectivity was established. Due to the high density of positive charge on the membrane, the mono-/divalent ion (Na+/Mg2+) selectivity of this novel nanofiltration membrane was at a high level compared with recent reports and much higher than commercial nanofiltration membranes. This work provides an effective method for fabricating the highly positively charged nanofiltration membrane which has great potential for multivalent cations separation.
Membranes with Negatively-Charged Nanochannels Fabricated from Aqueous Sulfonated Polysulfone Nanoparticles for Enhancing the Rejection of Divalent Anions

Abstract:Nanofiltration membranes (NFMs) with negatively-charged nanochannels (NCNs) are of critical significance for enhancing the rejection of divalent anions. Herein, NFMs with NCNs are fabricated through a facile coating-heating route. Sulfonated polysulfone (SPSF) nanoparticles (13-40 nm) dispersed in aqueous phase are used to generate a dense layer on PES ultrafiltration (UF) membranes with different molecular weight cut-off (MWCO). It is found that the differences in the roughness of the substrates have significant contributions to the packing process of the SPSF nanoparticles, which indicate the smooth surface can be the better one. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images suggest the successful fabrication of the dense layer about 200 nm on different substrates. The resultant membranes feature selective layers with the nanochannels from 0.7 to 1.2 nm in average and zeta potential measurements indicate the nanochannel layers are negatively charged, causing the salts rejection in the following sequence: Na2SO4 > NaCl > MgSO4 > MgCl2. Furthermore, the constructed membranes exhibit an excellent separation performance with the water flux of 7.2 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1) and the rejection rate for Na2SO4 of 94%, which demonstrates a novel economic and effective approach towards fabrication of nanofiltration membranes.
Tailoring Pore Size of Positively-Charged Nanofiltration Membrane Via a Facile Self-Assembly Method

Abstract:Positively-charged nanofiltration (NF) membranes have attracted more attention compared with traditional negative NF membranes. In this work, one-step self-assembly strategy was designed to prepare positively-charged NF separation layer by the close packing of poly(styrene-r-quaternized 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (P(St-r-QDMA)) nanoparticles (NPs) with intramolecular crosslinking structure. Meanwhile, the pore size of NF membrane was tailored by regulating the aggregation of the NPs using different ions and annealing conditions. Herein, water was used as a dispersant to obtain P(St-r-QDMA) NPs dispersion, which is non-toxic and green. The pore size cut-off (PSCO) of the separation layer is well controlled in the range of 0.98–4.04 nm. The optimal membrane showed molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of 380 Da (i.e., PSCO, 0.98 nm) with the isoelectric point of 9.4, which effectively improved the separation performance for divalent cations (97.2 % for MgCl2 and 96.0 % for CaCl2) and neutral small molecules (97.7 % for VB12 and 92.5 % for PEG400). This work gives a novel and convenient method to construct positively-charged NF membrane with controlled pore sizes, which will be a promising candidate for water softening and molecular separation.

Abstract:High-efficient separation of molecules is of great significance in food, biotechnology, pharmaceutical and dairy industries. To this end, cationic hyperbranched poly (amido-amine)s (HBPs) with different numbers of quaternary ammonium groups were employed as a new kind of 3D spherical macromonomers to fabricate nanofiltration (NF) membranes, through interfacial polymerization (IP) between cationic HBPs and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) on a polyvinyl chloride ultrafiltration (PVC-UF) hollow fiber membrane surface. Apart from the inner voids inside cationic HBP molecules for fast transport of water molecules, sizes and charge properties of the outer voids between cationic HBP molecules can be modulated by changing the numbers of quaternary ammonium groups on cationic HBP molecule surfaces for enhancing both high permeability and selectivity (water permeance and MgCl2 rejection rate of the resultant NF membrane are up to 310.5 L m−2 h−1 MPa−1 and 92.0% respectively). Based on the separation mechanism of combined steric and Donnan effects, the resultant NF membrane exhibits ultrahigh retentions to molecules with high molecular weights (MWs) or positive charges, thus molecular-level selectivity to VB12/VB2 (neutral molecules with distinct MWs) or VB1/VB2 (cationic/neutral molecules with similar MWs) can be achieved.

Abstract:Nanofiltration (NF) membranes with ultra-high separation selectivity to both mono-/divalent anions and cations are desirable for treatment of practical water with complex composition of ions. In this work, a facile and universal method for fabricating polyamide (PA) NF membranes with both ultra-high separation selectivity to mono-/divalent anions and cations was developed. Cationic poly(amido-amine) (PAMAM) dendrimers with different numbers of terminal quaternary ammonium groups were synthesized and incorporated into the polyamide (PA) matrix by interfacial polymerization (IP) to modulate both charge properties and network structures of the PA nanofilms. Contributed by the heterogenous distribution of PAMAM G5-TAC2, a Janus charged PA nanofilm was successfully fabricated. The negatively charged top surface of the PA nanofilm leads to a high electrostatic repulsion to divalent anions while its positively charged back surface exerts a high electrostatic repulsion to divalent cations. Moreover, the network structures of the PA nanofilms are precisely modulated to accelerate the transport of water molecules (103.5 L m? 2h-1 MPa? 1). Based on the synergistic effect of steric and Donnan effects, the transports of both divalent anions and cations through the G5-TAC2/PIP membrane are hindered, while the transports of monovalent ions are free, so that both ultra-high separation selectivity to mono-/divalent anions and cations (both above 65) can be achieved. Compared to PIP only membrane, G5TAC2/PIP membrane exhibits high-efficiency in mixed ion separation process.

Abstract:By filtering deposition of polyethylene imine (PEI)and then crosslinking by glutaraldehyde,a dense separation layer was introduced onto the surface of PVC ultrafiltration membrane.On this basis,positively charged PVC/PEI composite NF membrane was prepared after the reaction between the remaining amino groups and 2,3-epoxy-trimethyl ammonium chloride(EPTAC).It was found that we would achieve PVC nanofiltration membrane with the best performance using mixture of PEI-7w and PEI-2w (1∶1 ).The PVC/PEI composite NF membrane showed good hydrophilicity and great nanofiltration performance.Under the operating pressure of 0.3 MPa,the Congo red rejection and flux is 98.9% and 58.7 L/m2 ·h,respectively,while the NaCl rejection is almost zero.Thus,the PVC nanofiltration membrane was quite qualified for the separation of mixed inorgan-icsalt and dye solution.This approach is a promising way for fabricating PVC NF membrane with high water flux and dye rej ection.

Abstract:To achieve high water flux, the majority of positively charged NF membranes consist of a thin active skin deposited on a thick, permeable support, while the connection force between the active layer and the support is a physical force which may cause the membrane unstable in the long running. In general, chemical bond connection may show superior stability. Based on this consideration, a series of positively charged nanofiltration (NF) membranes were prepared by UV-initiated graft polymerization of methacrylatoethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC) onto polysulfone ultrafiltration membranes in this work. The salts rejection order of these membranes is MgCl2>NaCl>MgSO4≥Na2SO4. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in attenuated total reflection mode (FTIR-ATR), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and water contact angle were employed to characterize the resulting membranes. The results indicated that the grafting degree (DG) increased with increasing the monomer concentration, prolonging the irradiation time and reducing the irradiation distance. However, the filtration performance was not well correlated with the increasing DG. The NF membrane prepared by photografting in a 1.5M DMC solution for 5min demonstrated high MgCl2 rejection (94.8%) accompanied with high flux (20.3L/m2h) at 0.2MPa. When operation pressure increased to 0.8MPa, the solution flux increased to 60L/m2h, while MgCl2 rejection nearly maintained stable about 92.4%. An interesting phenomenon was also observed in this experiment that the flux of pure water was less than that of salt solution for some NF membranes.

Abstract:A zwitterionic copolymer is used to graft polyamide nanofiltration membranes, refining pore size distribution and neutralizing the surface charge. Unlike charged membranes that only effectively separate co‐ions, the modified membrane precisely separate monovalent and divalent ions regardless of their charge sign, while maintaining high water permeance. This offers a strategy for developing membranes that universally separating differently charged solutes. Achieving precise selective separation of monovalent and divalent cations, as well as anions, is vital yet challenging in practical applications involving complex component treatments. Current membranes are typically effective for separating either cation pairs or anion pairs. To address this issue, a straightforward strategy for fabricating a nanofiltration (NF) membrane is developed that selectively permeates monovalent ions. This study focused on neutralizing the surface charge and tuning the pore size distribution of the polyamide membranes through a secondary interfacial polymerization using a zwitterionic copolymer consisting of 2‐methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine and 2‐aminoethyl methacrylate hydrochloride. The optimized NF membrane prepared in this study, with a near‐neutrally charged membrane surface and appropriate pore size distribution, demonstrates favorable performance in precisely separating monovalent and divalent ions, irrespective of the ion charge sign. The optimum NF membrane features high selectivity for both Cl−/SO42− (93) and Li+/Mg2+ (67) ion pairs, along with high water permeance of 8.5 L m−2 h−1 bar−1, making it competitive with many reported membranes. This study offers new insights into the ion‐selective mechanisms of polyamide membranes for monovalent/divalent ions and may guide the development of advanced membranes with single‐solute selectivity.

Abstract:To obtain positively charged layer and achieve high divalent cation rejection, a novel nanofiltration (NF) membrane was successfully fabricated by utilizing polyethyleneimine (PEI), newly fabricated polyacrolein (PA) and amine silane coupling agent γ-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES). The PA was synthesized via radical polymerization to avoid the migration and volatilization of small molecule in the typical coating process, making NF membranes even with great stability. On the one hand, the PEI crosslinked with PA through Schiff base reaction; on the other hand, the in-situ hydrolysis self-polycondensation of APTES generated loose networks with Si-O-Si bonds which provided the permeation channel for water and accordingly boosted the water permeance. The water permeance of the optimal PEI/PA/APTES membrane could reach 16.9 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1 and the Mg2+ and Ca2+ rejections were 98.8% and 97.3%, respectively, better than those of commercial NF membranes, breaking up the “trade off” effect. This study prepared a high-performance PEI/PA/APTES hybrid NF membrane oriented for hard water softening in tap water and brackish water via the non-interfacial macromolecule crosslinking coating method.

Abstract:This research introduces highly efficient nanofiltration (NF) membranes designed for the effective rejection of both divalent cations and anions, a critical feature for advanced water treatment technologies. We have devised a simple yet adaptable approach for fabricating Janus polyamide (PA) thin-films characterized by dual charges, which exhibit pronounced selectivity towards both mono-/divalent anions and cations. Leveraging a straightforward interfacial polymerization (IP) process, we integrated high molecular weight polyethyleneimine (PEI) within the PA matrix. This strategy ensured the preferential formation of a dense, negatively charged upper layer dominated by piperazine (PIP), while the substantial molecular size of PEI facilitated the emergence of a loose and positively charged lower layer, thus giving rise to a distinctively charged and structurally heterogeneous PA thin-film. Furthermore, the strategic inclusion of PEI inhibits the diffusion of the PIP, thereby promoting the development of nano-wrinkled structures. This structural innovation not only enhances pure water permeance (16.0 L m ‒2 h ‒1 bar ‒1 ) but also optimizes ion selectivity through the coordination of steric hindrance and Donnan effects. Consequently, the Janus charged NF membranes we developed exhibit exceptional selectivity for mono-/divalent ions, particularly demonstrating remarkable ion selectivity for Cl ‒ /SO 4 2‒ and Li + /Mg 2+ of 102 and 24, respectively. Our findings introduce a pioneering avenue for fabricating NF membranes that proficiently separate mono-/divalent ions, promising significant advancements in water treatment and purification endeavors.

Abstract:Developing nanofiltration (NF) membranes with highly efficient and precise separation ability is of great significance for the molecular and ionic separations. In this work, positively charged composite NF membranes were engineered via soaking of polysulfone (PSF) ultrafiltration membranes in poly(N-vinyl imidazole) (PVI) solutions followed by a quaternization crosslinking step. The PVI was firmly attached to the PSF membrane by this method and acted as an active separation layer of the composite NF membrane. The obtained composite NF membrane featured a high rejection (83%) to vitamin B-12 (molecular radius: 0.74 nm) but a low rejection (24.6%) to vitamin B-2 (molecular radius: 0.47 nm), exhibiting a great potential in precisely molecular separation. Furthermore, the ionic separation ability of the composite NF membrane was confirmed with a rejection order of Na2SO4 < MgSO4 < NaCl < MgCl2 and the MgCl2 rejection reached up to 90.1%. Compared to conventional polyamide NF membranes, the developed PVI/PSF composite NF membranes were characterized with high separation precision to organic molecules, higher rejection over cationic ions than over anionic ones, better chlorine resistance and stability in long-term operation. In addition, the membrane fabrication process is convenient and easily scaled up in industry. Abstract:A novel method for the preparation of hydrophilic and positively charged nanofiltration (NF) membranes was developed. An active top-layer with NF characteristic was composited onto polysulfone (PSf) ultrafiltration substrate by UV-induced graft polymerization of N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) followed by quaternization cross-linking with p-xylylene dichloride (XDC). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were employed to monitor membrane surface chemical and morphological changes after poly(DMAEMA) grafting and quaternization cross-linking. The influences of UV irradiation time, monomer DMAEMA concentration, the cross-linker XDC concentration on the separation and permeation properties of membrane were investigated. The surface hydrophilicity of the composite membranes was evaluated by contact angle measurement. It was found that membrane hydrophilicity was obviously enhanced after UV-induced grafting and quaternization cross-linking. As the UV irradiation time and DMAEMA monomer concentration were increased, salts rejection of the composite membranes increased while water permeability decreased. Under the optimized preparing conditions, water flux and MgCl2 rejection (1.0g/L) of the composite membranes reached 60.3L/(m2hMPa) and 93.2%, respectively. The membrane surface charge property was measured via a streaming potential method. It was found that, at pH from 4.5 to 9, the composite membranes showed positive zeta potentials. The rejections of the composite membranes to different salts followed the order Na2SO4<NaCl<MgSO4<MgCl2<CaCl2. Moreover, the composite NF membranes showed a good stability in water-phase filtration process.

Abstract:The development of cation-exchange membrane with the ability to effectively separate mono/divalent ions is of crucial importance to various industrial applications such as wastewater purification and seawater desalination. However, it remains a big challenge to fabricate monovalent cation selective membrane maintaining both of high ion flux and good permselectivity. In this study, nanofibrous composite membranes (NFCMs) containing -N+(CH3)3 and -SO3- groups are fabricated by impregnating bromomethylated poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (BPPO) electrospun nanofibrous mats into sulfonated poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (SPPO) solution and followed by quaternization of the bromomethyl groups. The unique nanofibrous composite structure results in low electrical resistance, high limiting current density (ilim) and significant improvement in dimensional stability and ion flux. In addition, due to the introduced quaternized electrospun nanofibrous mats, monovalent cations can be separated from divalent cations by their difference of electrostatic repulsion force. Compared with the commercial monovalent cation selective membrane (CSO), the optimized membrane (NQS1) in this study shows better performance with the ion flux of 2.96×10−8molcm−2 s−1 and the permselectivity of 1.62 in an electrodialysis process (feed solution: 0.1molL−1 NaCl /MgCl2). According to the excellent performances, our nanofibrous composite membranes are expected to be a promising candidate for Na+/Mg2+ separation.
Separation mechanism, selectivity enhancement strategies and advanced materials for mono-/multivalent ion-selective nanofiltration membrane

Abstract:Mono-/multivalent ion-selective separation has become a common requirement at the water-energy nexus, including energy storage and conversion, water purification, and sustainable industrial processes. In this review, we summarize the theory of ion transport through membrane and mechanisms of selective ion separation in nanofiltration (NF) briefly. Recent advancing in improving the mono-/multivalent ion selectivity of thin-film composite (TFC) NF membrane via size sieving enhancement, electric charge property regulation and co-enhancement of size sieving and electric charge properties are concluded. What's more, three material classes—surface assembly materials, nanomaterials and biomimetic ion channels are highlighted as candidates for the preparation of ion-selective NF membranes. Lastly, design directions and critical challenges for developing high-selectivity nanofiltration membranes based on the ion-selective mechanisms are provided.

Abstract:Traditional thin film composite polyamide nanofiltration (NF) membranes are difficult to simultaneously achieve high rejection for salts that are divalent anionic and cationic, and their separation selectivity for mono-/di-valent salt separation is usually poor. Herein, novel polyesteramide NF membranes were developed by interfacial polymerization on modified poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) substrates containing tannic acid (TA) self-assembled coating (TC@PVDF). TC@PVDF substrates were firstly fabricated via non-solvent induced phase separation technology using amphiphilic hyperbranched poly(methyl methacrylate-co-N-methylacrylamide) (HPMH) copolymers as in situ modifiers and TA aqueous solution as coagulation bath. The self-assembly behavior between TA and HPMH results in the increase of substrate surface hydrophilicity, electronegativity and pore size, which would facilitate the storage and uniform distribution of aqueous monomer piperazine on the substrate surface. For these reasons, TA coating interlayered NF (TCi-NF) membrane exhibits a thick polyesteramide layer with crisscrossing ridge surface morphology, a low molecular weight and a small pore size. The TCi-NF membrane not only demonstrates high rejection toward Na2SO4 (99.3 %) and MgC(l)2 (95.7 %), but also displays exceptional separation selectivity for both mono-/di-valent anions [alpha(Cl-/SO42-) = 49] and mono-/di-valent cations [alpha(Na+/Mg2+) = 52]. Since the surface charge property of TCi-NF membrane is close to weak negativity, electrostatic effect between charged ions and membrane surface would be weakened, so the separation mechanism mainly depends on the size exclusion effect. Specifically, the TCi-NF membrane displays stable long-term separation performance and high salt concentration resistance. Therefore, this research provides a new preparation strategy for improving the precise desalination performance of thin film composite NF membranes.
Positively Charged Modification of Commercial Nanofiltration Membrane to Enhance the Separation of Mono−/divalent Cation

Abstract:The separation efficiency of mono-/divalent cations by a commercial nanofiltration membrane can be enhanced by increasing the surface positive charge. In this study, a novel surface grafting method was suggested, including activation with 2-chloro-1-methyliodopyridine (CMPI), and sequent graft polyethylene-imine (PEI) and 2,3-epoxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride (EPTAC). Less flux reduction (<30%) and higher separation factor of Mg2+/Na+ (8.03-9.77) was achieved with the modified membrane under the grafting condition of 0.05 wt% CMPI, 2 wt% PEI, and 1 wt% EPTAC. The modified membranes had higher surface positive charge, hydrophilicity and cross-linking degree. During the 32-h filtration of a mixed salt solution, the modified membranes showed larger permeance (>11 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1)) and higher ion selectivity than the pristine membrane, with separation factors of Mg2+/Na+ and Mg2+/Li+ ranging 36.3-46.2 for the modified membranes. The modified membranes also have higher antifouling properties and are more stable at higher pH condition. The results demonstrate a facile and scalable surface modification method to improve the cation selectivity of commercial NF membranes, which shows great potential in the application of mono-/divalent ion separation.

Abstract:Creating a gradient structure in a separation layer is an effective approach for enhancing separation performance of thin film composite membranes. Here we present the preparation of a positively charged nanofiltration membrane with a gradient structure. An inner layer consisting of a loose polyester separation layer with large pores was formed through the interfacial polymerization (IP) reaction between triethanolamine (TEA) and tri-mesoyl chloride (TMC). And a dense and thin top layer composed of a polyamide separation layer was obtained by secondary interfacial polymerization (SIP) reaction using polyethyleneimine (PEI) along with unreacted TMC and residual acyl chloride groups of IP reaction. The influences of TEA concentration, PEI concentration and SIP time on the physicochemical properties and separation performances of the membrane were systematically analyzed. Our results show that the presence of the gradient structure optimized mass transfer pathways and reduced mass transfer resistance, resulting in significantly improved permeability of 13.0 +/- 0.5 L.m(-2).h(-1).bar(-1) (over 3 times compared with control-PEI), high MgCl2 rejection of 91.7 +/- 0.6 %, and an excellent stability and anti-fouling performance. Our work provides valuable insights and guidance for developing high-performance positively charged NF membrane with gradient structures.
