Abstract:This paper presents a rapid and low-cost north-finder with error compensation (EC_North-Finder). An electronic compass is adopted as a core measuring unit and the steering mechanism of the instrument probe is adjusted through the translocation motor. Aiming at the influence of interference factors, a compensation algorithm which is based on the ellipse hypothesis is used in the calibration of electronic compass. Controlled by single chip microcomputer, the system could collect the location information; operate the translocation motor automatically and intelligently. In addition, the orientation data can also be processed and stored. The experiments results show that the precision of orientation data can be less than 0.8°.

Abstract:This system is an underwater integrated navigation system based on Attitude Heading Reference System (AHRS)/Global Positioning System (GPS)/Doppler Velocity Log (DVL). It is built on STM32F103 equipped with the uCOS-II system, which has perfect real-time character, low cost and high-performance. The present hardware includes singer board computer, AHRS, DVL, depth gauge, and GPS receiver. Kalman filter is applied in the sensors data process and dead-reckoning algorithm of navigation system. This paper describes hardware and software design as well as results of simulation. The performance analysis is carried out based on the position and velocity errors. It shows that the system is viable and can be used in the "XUANWU" Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV).

Abstract:AUV terminal docking is an important part of docking technology. Aiming at the problem that the optical and visual guidance distance decreases with the increase of water turbidity, an electromagnetic positioning system based on two coils was designed. The magnetic transmitter and receiver subsystems are built, and the algorithm of magnetic calculation and localization is designed. The positioning experiments have been carried out on land and underwater. The maximum positioning error of the on-land test is about 1m at (10,0), and the error of the underwater test is 0.5 m within 4.5 m. The results prove the feasibility of the system.

Abstract:This paper studies the problem about robot path planning, and puts forward an application of electronic compass and vision-based camera which used for robot navigation and map building. We can make sure the azimuth angle of robot by installing electronic compass on robot's control panel, and then locate the robot through the image information from the camera which is installed on the robot's head. Suppose the mobile environment of robot is indoor, and we can determine the original location, current location of robot and the object's location through combining the data which from electronic compass with the data from camera. We also can build the map information by a comprehensive analysis of these data and build a new data structure which is special constructed for electric compass. The result shows that the micro system provides a good solution of map building, navigation and location in the laboratory environment.
Integrated Navigation for an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Carrying Synthetic Aperture Sonar

Abstract:As the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) becomes more popular in various ocean applications, its navigation technique has attracted great attention since it is often crucial that the vehicle position be known precisely. Selection of a practical navigation scheme is a tradeoff between performance, space/power budget and cost. In this study, a low-cost, small-size navigation system for an AUV carrying synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) is presented. An integrated navigation method is also developed based on the extended Kalman filter, in which two novel processes, track-based compass calibration and adaptive beamforming-based SAS micro-navigation, are incorporated. For compass calibration, the heading bias caused by hard iron interferences is estimated through a surface calibration run; for displaced phase centre antenna-based micro-navigation, sway estimation is done by applying adaptive beamforming to the overlapped phase centre array. A number of AUV field tests were implemented and the results demonstrate that a relative navigation error of as low as 0.23% of the travelling distance in circular runs can be achieved using the developed approach.
A Novel Algorithm for Improving the Accuracy of Attitude and Heading Angle Measurement of Electronic Compass

Abstract:This paper studied the measurement precision of the electronic compass used in VSAT(very small aperture terminal).The basic principle of the measurement was discussed in detail,and the error mathematical model of the measurement was derived.The cause for the increase of the roll angle measurement error with the increases of the pitch angle was analyzed and a novel method for improving the measurement precision was proposed based on the above analysis.The simulation and experiment results show that the novel method can remove the influence of pitch angle on the roll angle measurement and can improve the accuracy of heading measurement effectively.The application of the novel method shows that the roll angle accuracy is approximately 0.2°and the heading angle accuracy is approximately 0.5°with a turntable pitch angle of 30°.

Abstract:A scheme is presented for orienting application, which is based on micro-magnetic sensor and accelerometer, and the scheme can solve the orienting problems well. We have an optimized arrangement of the two sensors' positions, whi ch provides premise for establishing reference coordinate. An algorithm for completely oriented sensing is applied. In the algorithm, we take a concept of relative coordinate, and it simplifies solution process of the algorithm. The algorithm gives an intelligent solution for azimuth output mode, which can identify the actual east or west orientation. The hardware platform for result testing is established, which is based upon the structure upper computer and lower computer. We quote wavelet analysis method for noise cancellation. We point out corresponding simulation results by using the Matlab Wavelet toolbox and Signal processing toolbox. Comparing with traditional compasses, the digital compass is smaller, lighter, and more reliable; furthermore, the digital compass we present can work in complex conditions such as certain roll angles and pitch angles.

Abstract:Visible light earth sensor is an important attitude measurement device in the satellite attitude control system.Based on CMOS image sensors,a design of visible light earth sensor for micro-satellites is introduces,and such earth sensor has the features of simple structure,small size,light weight and low power consumption.According to the theory of earth sensors,this paper presents its entire architecture and completes the hardware and software design.During the course of image processing,a new fast algorithm of Hough transform is adopted,which has greatly raised the speed of attitude measurement.The experimental results reveal that the earth sensor can reach a measurement precision of 0.1°,which meets the requirement of the attitude control system of micro-satellites.
Development and Application of a High-Precision Portable Digital Compass System for Improving Combined Navigation Performance

Abstract:There are not many high-precision, portable digital compass solutions available right now that can enhance combined navigation systems' overall functionality. Additionally, there is a dearth of writing about these products. This is why a tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) sensor-based high-precision portable digital compass system is designed. First, the least-squares method is used to compensate for compass inaccuracy once the ellipsoid fitting method has corrected manufacturing and installation errors in the digital compass system. Second, the digital compass's direction angle data is utilized to offset the combined navigation system's mistake. The final objective is to create a high-performing portable TMR digital compass system that will enhance the accuracy and stability of the combined navigation system (abbreviated as CNS). According to the experimental results, the digital compass's azimuth accuracy was 4.1824° before error compensation and 0.4580° after it was applied. The combined navigation system's path is now more accurate overall and is closer to the reference route than it was before the digital compass was added. Furthermore, compared to the combined navigation route without the digital compass, the combined navigation route with the digital compass included is more stable while traveling through the tunnel. It is evident that the digital compass system's design can raise the integrated navigation system's accuracy and stability. The integrated navigation system's overall performance may be somewhat enhanced by this approach.

Abstract:Besides positioning, Compass systems can also be employed in the transmission of short messages. This is a unique advantage compared to other positioning systems like GPS and GLONASS. As a result, the resources of the Compass system is fully taking advantage of in this case as the more traditional application, positioning, suffers from low precision, common in first generation Compass system. The focus of the next generation of Compass system will be on improving the precision hence broadening its applications. This paper explores the building structure of the first generation Compass system, which consists of the system composition, system parameters, communication mechanism and its fields of applications. In addition, a look into the prospects of future application of the next generation is presented.

Abstract:A machine intelligence assistant BCI (brain-computer interface) navigation method for an outdoor mobile robot is put forward in view of the problem of BCI's low signal-to-noise ratio, bad accuracy and long time delay.A vehicle navigation system based on BCI and dual laser radar is designed and implemented.Firstly, an improved angle potential field method based on dual laser radar is used for local path planning, then with navigation intention from BCI system, control commands are generated by fusion decision and used for driving a electric vehicle with modified mechanical system.Experiments show that the system can realize intelligent obstacle avoidance and human-machine collaborative navigation based on environmental obstacle information and brain-machine interface control intention, and it has higher accuracy, tolerance and robustness.

Abstract:The accurate and reliable high-altitude orientation estimation is of great significance for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) localization, and further assists them to conduct some fundamental functions, such as aerial mapping, environmental monitoring, and risk management. However, the traditional orientation estimation is susceptible to electromagnetic interference, high maneuverability, and substantial scale variations. Hence, this paper aims to present a new visual compass algorithm to estimate the orientation of a UAV employing the appearance and geometry structure of the point and line features in the remote sensing images. In this study, a coarse-to-fine feature tracking method is used to locate the matched keypoints precisely. An LK-ZNCC algorithm is proposed to match line segments in real-time. A hierarchical fusion method for point and line features is designed to expand the scope of the usage of this system. Many comparative experiments between this algorithm and others are conducted on a UAV. Experimental results show that the proposed visual compass algorithm is a reliable, precise, and versatile system applicable to other UAV navigation systems, especially when they do not work in particular situations.

Abstract:According to the principle of electronic compass, we analyze the error of the E-compass and propose a calibration scheme in view of magnetic deviation, which is based on the self-designed tri-axial magnetometer system. The hardware is made by tri-axial magnetometer and tri-axial accelerometer. Considering the magnetic interference of the external environment will affect the magnetic deviation, we worked out a compensation method based on ellipsoid fitting. The experiment results showed the simplicity and efficiency of the algorithm. The compass deviation fell from 15 degree to within 1 degree. And it can maintain high accuracy even under large magnetic dip.

Abstract:Attitude and heading are the important parameters in unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV).The hardware and software design of the attitude and heading reference system(AHRS) based on S3C44B0X microprocessor is analyzed.It emphasizes to introduce the realization procedure of this system based on μC/OS-II real-time operating system(R-TOS).A performance test is performed.Test results show that the angle accuracy of the AHRS is ±0.5°for tilt and ±1°for heading,which satisfy the requirement to attitude and heading measurement for UAV flight control.

Abstract:This paper presents the development of a low cost miniature navigation system for autonomous flying rotary-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The system incorporates measurements from a low cost single point GPS and a triaxial solid state inertial/magnetic sensor unit. The navigation algorithm is composed of three modules running on a microcontroller: the sensor calibration module, the attitude estimator, and the velocity and position estimator. The sensor calibration module relies on a recursive least square based ellipsoid hypothesis calibration algorithm to estimate biases and scale factors of accelerometers and magnetometers without any additional calibration equipment. The attitude estimator is a low computational linear attitude fusion algorithm that effectively incorporates high frequency components of gyros and low frequency components of accelerometers and magnetometers to guarantee both accuracy and bandwidth of attitude estimation. The velocity and position estimator uses two cascaded complementary filters which fuse translational acceleration, GPS velocity, and position to improve the bandwidth of velocity and position. The designed navigation system is feasible for miniature UAVs due to its low cost, simplicity, miniaturization, and guaranteed estimation errors. Both ground tests and autonomous flight tests of miniature unmanned helicopter and quadrotor have shown the effectiveness of the proposed system, demonstrating its promise in UAV systems.

Abstract:Magnetic compasses are widely used in civil and military navigation applications but they are susceptible to magnetic disturbances in the environment.Thus,the compasses must be calibrated for the magnetic effects in the environment after installation.The calibration also improves the compass accuracy.An analysis of the effects of magnetic disturbances showed that the ellipse output assumption in the Sampson-distance based ellipse fitting method could be used to fit raw magnetic compass measurements.Then,the fitting coefficients are used to calibrate the compass readings to compensate for the environmental disturbances to improve the heading accuracy.A multi-position turntable experiment was used to calibrate a C100 two-dimensional magnetic compass fabricated by KVH.After calibration,the mean heading error was reduced from 1.5° to 0.25°,which illustrates the validity and practicality of this method.

Abstract:A method of on-line coaxality error measuring for rotary parts was introduced.The collection of non-touching high precision mesuring point with the application of laser-optical displacement sensors.Both the placement of the sensors and the whole measuring project were presented,and the algorithm for coaxality error based on them was introduced.The result of experiment illustrates that the whole system precision arrives 0.02 mm.
