Abstract:By means of a nested sequence of some critical pieces constructed by Kozlovski, Shen, and van Strien, and by using a covering lemma recently proved by Kahn and Lyubich, we prove that a component of the filled-in Julia set of any polynomial is a point if and only if its forward orbit contains no periodic critical components. It follows immediately that the Julia set of a polynomial is a Cantor set if and only if each critical component of the filled-in Julia set is aperiodic. This result was a conjecture raised by Branner and Hubbard in 1992.

Abstract:Inspired by the study of 3D fractals based on quadratic polynomial maps,1 this paper presents a novel approach for generating 3D Julia sets by utilizing a family of switching polynomial maps in order to further enrich the form of 3D fractals. Rotational symmetries in the structures of resulting Julia sets with different switching parameters are theoretically analyzed and proved. Experimental results obtained from various parameters and coefficients in the switching maps are provided and discussed in detail. It is hoped that the investigations conducted in this paper can bring on new perspectives for the generalization of 3D fractals.

Abstract:In this paper, we first establish a rational iteration method which can be used as a root-finding algorithm for almost every polynomial. It has no nonrepelling extraneous fixed point in the complex plane and is generally convergent for both quadratic and cubic polynomials. Then some properties of this algorithm are given. By the aid of computer, we produce pictures of the Julia sets for the iterations of some polynomials. Numerical results show that it is a root-finding method with convergence order the same as Halley's method.

Abstract:Considering the Potts model on diamond-like hierarchical lattices, in this paper, we show that the Julia sets of the singularities of the free energy may be a Feigenbaum Julia set. Furthermore, we prove that these Julia sets are locally connected if they are connected.

Abstract:A new approach for the representation of 3D general Julia sets is put forward on the basis of tri-dimensional polynomial maps. The condition for a 3D polynomial map to be equivariant is theoretically analyzed and proved. The equations of two classes of 3D polynomial maps that are equivariant with respect to the rotational symmetries of either a regular tetrahedron group or a regular octahedron group are strictly given, on the basis of which the properties of the general Julia sets created by these 3D polynomial maps are discussed and proved. A ray-tracing volume rendering algorithm, which defines the color and opacity of every discrete point within a Julia set according to its escaping distance, is proposed in order to acquire high quality 3D fractal images. Experimental results demonstrate that the approach of generating 3D Julia sets from 3D polynomial maps not only enables us to predict the characteristics of Julia sets according to the properties of the maps, but also makes it possible for us to obtain various kinds of Julia sets with different rotational symmetries by altering the parameters of the maps. Consequently, drawbacks such as monotone structure of the resulting fractals and inability to predict fractal shape in the existing methods for generating 3D fractal sets can be effectually avoided. Furthermore, the method of generating 3D Julia sets by 3D polynomial maps can be applied to the construction of other 3D fractals, and hence would result in a different perspective for the generation of 3D fractals.

Abstract:For a sequence (c(n)) of complex numbers, the quadratic polynomials f(cn) := z(2) + c(n) and the sequence (F-n) of iterates F-n := f(cn) circle...circle f(c1) are considered. The Fatou set F(c(n)) is defined as the set of all z is an element of (C) over cap := C boolean OR {infinity} such that (F-n) is normal in some neighbourhood of z, while the complement J(c(n)) of F(c(n)) (in (C) over cap) is called the Julia set. In this paper we discuss the conditions for J(c(n)) to be totally disconnected. A problem posed by Bruck is solved.

Abstract:Let f be a rational map whose Julia set J ( f ) is disconnected. It is proved that there exists a rational map g such that g has a family of buried Julia components on which g is quasiconformally conjugate to f on J ( f ) if and only if f has no parabolic basins and rotation domains. This extends the previous result about burying connected Julia sets to the disconnected case. Moreover, the limit behaviors of the conformal dimensions of successively burying Julia sets are also studied.

Abstract:We prove that a long iteration of rational maps is expanding near boundaries of bounded type Siegel disks. This leads us to extend Petersen's local connectivity result on the Julia sets of quadratic Siegel polynomials to a general case. A new key feature in the proof is that the puzzles are not used.

Abstract:We prove the existence of Cantor Julia sets with Hausdorff dimension two. In particular, such examples can be found in cubic polynomials. The proof is based on the characterization of the parameter spaces and dynamical planes of cubic polynomials by Branner-Hubbard, and the parabolic bifurcation theory developed by Shishikura in 1990s.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel escape-time algorithm is proposed to calculate the connectivity’s degree of Julia sets generated from polynomial maps. The proposed algorithm contains both quantitative analysis and visual display to measure the connectivity of Julia sets. For the quantitative part, a connectivity criterion method is designed by exploring the distribution rule of the connected regions, with an output value Co in the range of [0,1]. The smaller the Co value outputs, the better the connectivity is. For the visual part, we modify the classical escape-time algorithm by highlighting and separating the initial point of each connected area. Finally, the Julia set is drawn into different brightnesses according to different Co values. The darker the color, the better the connectivity of the Julia set. Numerical results are included to assess the efficiency of the algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the dynamics of the following family of rational maps f(lambda) (z) = z(2n) - 3(n+1) z(n) (z(2n) - lambda(n-1)) with one parameter lambda is an element of C* -{lambda:lambda(2n+2) =1}, where n >= 2. This family of rational maps is viewed as a singular perturbation of the bi- critical map P-n (z) = z(-n) if lambda not equal 0 is small. It is proved that the Julia set J (f(lambda)) is either a quasicircle, a Cantor set of circles, a Sierpinski carpet or a degenerate Sierpinski carpet provided the free critical orbits of f(lambda) are attracted by the super-attracting cycle 0 <-> 1. Furthermore, we prove that there exists suitable lambda such that J (f(lambda)) is a Cantor set of circles but the dynamics of f(lambda) on J (f(lambda)) is not topologically conjugate to that of any known rational maps with only one or two free critical orbits (including McMullen maps and the generalized McMullen maps). The connectivity of J (f(lambda)) is also proved if the free critical orbits are not attracted by the cycle 0 $ 1. Finally we give an estimate of the Hausdor ff dimension of the Julia set of f(lambda) in some special cases.

Abstract:We prove that the Julia sets of a number of rational maps and transcendental entire functions with bounded type Siegel disks are locally connected. This is based on establishing an expanding property of a long iteration of a class of quasi-Blaschke models near the unit circle.

Abstract:For a sequence (cn) of complex numbers, the quadratic polynomials fcn:= z2 + Cn and the sequence (Fn) of iterates Fn: = fcn ο ⋯ ο fc1 are considered. The Fatou set F(Cn) is defined as the set of all$z \in \hat {\mathbb{C}}: = {\mathbb{C}} \cup \left\{ \infty \right\}$ such that (Fn) is normal in some neighbourhood of z, while the complement J(Cn) of F(cn) (in$\hat {\mathbb{C}}$) is called the Julia set. The aim of this paper is to study the stability of the Julia set J(Cn) in the case where (cn) is bounded. A problem put forward by Brück is solved.

Abstract:It is shown that the d(n)th Chebyshev polynomials oil the Julia set J(P), and on the equipotential curve Gamma(P)(R), of the polynomial P(z) = z(d) - c, are identical and exactly equal to the nth iteration of P(z) itself. As an application, the capacity of the Julia set J(P) is deduced, a result that was first obtained by Brolin.
