Abstract:The local connectivity of Julia sets for the family of biquadratic polynomials f c (z) = (z 2 − 2c 2)z 2 with a parameter c is discussed. It is proved that for any parameter c, the boundary of the immediately attracting domain of f c is a Jordan curve.

Abstract:Abstract This article focuses on the connectedness locus of the cubic polynomial slice with a parabolic fixed point of multiplier . We first show that any parabolic component, which is a parallel notion of hyperbolic component, is a Jordan domain. Moreover, a continuum called the central part in the connectedness locus is introduced. This is the natural analogue to the closure of the main hyperbolic component of . We prove that is almost a double covering of the filled‐in Julia set of the quadratic polynomial .

On connectedness in the parametric geometry of numbers

Abstract:Via multilinear algebra, we formulate a criterion for connectedness in the parametric geometry of numbers in terms of pencils, which are certain algebraic varieties in the space of matrices. As a consequence, we obtain a connectedness result for generic lattices arising from Diophantine approximation on analytic submanifolds, and sharpen Schmidt and Summerer's results of connectedness on simultaneous Diophantine approximation and approximation by linear forms.

On cubic polynomials with the cyclic Galois group

Abstract:A cubic Galois polynomial is a cubic polynomial with rational coefficients that defines a cubic Galois field. Its discriminant is a full square and its roots $x_1,x_2,x_3$ (enumerated in some order) are real. There exists (and only one) quadratic polynomial $q$ with rational coefficients such that $q(x_1)=x_2, q(x_2)=x_3, q(x_3)=x_1$. The polynomial $r=q(q)\text{ mod } p$ cyclically permutes roots of $p$ in the opposite order: $r(x_1)=x_3, r(x_3)=x_2, r(x_2)=x_1$. We prove that there exist a unique Galois polynomial $p_1$ and a unique Galois polynomial $p_2$ such that the polynomial $q$ cyclically permutes roots of $p_1$ and the polynomial $r$ do the same with roots of $p_2$. Polynomials $p$ and $p_1$ (and also $p$ and $p_2$) will be called \emph{coupled}. Two polynomials are \emph{linear equivalent}, if one of them is obtained from another by a linear change of variable. By $C(p)$ we denote the class of polynomials, linear equivalent to $p$. The coupling realizes a bijection between classes $C(p)$ and $C(p_1)$ (and between classes $C(p)$ and $C(p_2)$). Classes $C(p)$ and $C(p_1)$ (and classes $C(p)$ and $C(p_2)$) will be called \emph{adjacent}. We consider a graph: its vertices -- are classes of the linear equivalency and two vertices are connected by an edge, if the corresponded classes are adjacent. Connected components of this graph will be called \emph{superclasses}. In this work we give a description of superclasses.

Abstract:The Durfee conjecture, proposed in 1978, relates two important invariants of isolated hypersurface singularities by a famous inequality; however, the inequality in this conjecture is not sharp. In 1995, Yau announced his conjecture which proposed a sharp inequality. The Yau conjecture characterizes the conditions under which an affine hypersurface with an isolated singularity at the origin is a cone over a nonsingular projective hypersurface; in other words, the conjecture gives a coordinate-free characterization of when a convergent power series is a homogeneous polynomial after a biholomorphic change of variables. In this paper, we have proved that if pg > 0, then 5!pg ≤ μ− p(v), p(v) = (v − 1) − v(v − 1) . . . (v − 4) and pg, μ and v are, respectively, the geometric genus, the Milnor number, and the multiplicity of the isolated singularity at the origin of a weighted homogeneous polynomial. As a consequence, we prove that the Yau conjecture holds for n = 5 if pg > 0. In the process, we have also defined yet another sharp upper bound for the number of positive integral points within a five-dimensional simplex.

Abstract:This study presents a novel family of bivariate 2D- q q Hermite polynomials. We derive explicit forms and q q -partial differential equations and investigate numerical aspects associated with these polynomials. Furthermore, we deduce the monomiality principle and other key properties of the bivariate 2D- q q Hermite polynomials, including q q -recurrence relations and q q -difference equations. In addition, the graphical representations for the bivariate 2D- q q Hermite polynomials and q q -Hermite polynomials are explored for different values of indices.

Twisted Cohomology of Configuration Spaces and Spaces of Maximal Tori Via Point-Counting

Abstract:We consider two families of algebraic varieties Y_n indexed by natural numbers n: the configuration space of unordered n-tuples of distinct points on ℂ, and the space of unordered n-tuples of linearly independent lines in ℂ^n. Let W_n be any sequence of virtual S_n-representations given by a character polynomial, we compute H^i(Y_n; W_n) for all i and all n in terms of double generating functions. One consequence of the computation is a new recurrence phenomenon: the stable twisted Betti numbers lim_n→∞ H^i(Y_n; W_n) are linearly recurrent in i. Our method is to compute twisted point-counts on the F_q-points of certain algebraic varieties, and then pass through the Grothendieck-Lefschetz fixed point formula to prove results in topology. We also generalize a result of Church-Ellenberg-Farb about the configuration spaces of the affine line to those of a general smooth variety.

Abstract:A standard question in real algebraic geometry is to compute the number of connected components of a real algebraic variety in affine space. This manuscript provides algorithms for computing the number of connected components, the Euler characteristic, and deciding the connectivity between two points for a smooth manifold arising as the complement of a real hypersurface of a real algebraic variety. When considering the complement of the set of singular points of a real algebraic variety, this yields an approach for determining smooth connectivity in a real algebraic variety. The method is based upon gradient ascent/descent paths on the real algebraic variety inspired by a method proposed by Hong, Rohal, Safey El Din, and Schost for complements of real hypersurfaces. Several examples are included to demonstrate the approach.

Abstract:The stability robustness of both continuous and discrete-time dynamical systems is tantamount to the stability of a whole family of (characteristic) polynomials. The authors treat such families as sets in coefficient space and examine some of their geometric properties. Specifically, they examine cases where the stability of the extreme points of a set implies the stability of the complete family. They are also concerned with the construction and convexity of the stability region in coefficient space.

Abstract:We study the non-klt locus of singularities of pairs. We show that given a pair $(X,B)$ and a projective morphism $X\to Z$ with connected fibres such that $-(K_X+B)$ is nef over $Z$, the non-klt locus of $(X,B)$ has at most two connected components near each fibre of $X\to Z$. This was conjectured by Hacon and Han. In a different direction we answer a question of Mark Gross on connectedness of the non-klt loci of certain pairs. This is motivated by constructions in Mirror Symmetry.

Complex solutions of polynomial equations on the unit circle

Abstract:We explore systems of polynomial equations where we seek complex solutions with absolute value 1. Geometrically, this amounts to understanding intersections of algebraic varieties with tori -- Cartesian powers of the unit circle. We study the properties of varieties in which this intersection is Zariski dense, give a criterion for Zariski density and use it to show that the problem is decidable. This problem is a ``continuous'' analogue of the Manin-Mumford conjecture for the multiplicative group of complex numbers, however, the results are very different from Manin-Mumford. While the results of the paper appear to be new, the proofs are quite elementary. This is an expository article aiming to introduce some classical mathematical topics to a general audience. We also list some exercises and problems at the end for the curious reader to further explore these topics.

On the density of visible lattice points along polynomials

Abstract:Recently, the notion of visibility from the origin has been generalized by viewing lattice points through curved lines of sights, where the family of curves considered are $y=mx^k$, $k\in\mathbb{N}$. In this note, we generalize the notion of visible lattice points for a given polynomial family of curves passing through the origin, and study the density of visible lattice points for this family. The density of visible lattice points for family of curves $y=mx^k$, $k\in\mathbb{N}$ is well understood as one has nice arithmetic interpretations in terms of a generalized gcd function, which seems to be absent for general polynomial families. We pose "Visibility density conjecture" regarding the density of visible lattice points for polynomial families passing through the origin, and show some numerical results supporting the conjecture. We obtain a lower bound on the density for a class of quadratic families. In addition, we discuss some ideas of the proof of the conjecture for the simplest quadratic family.

Abstract:Under conjugation by affine transformations, the dynamical moduli space of cubic polynomials $f$ with a $2$-cycle of Siegel disks is parameterized by a three-punctured complex plane as a degree-$2$ cover. Assuming the rotation number of $f^2$ on the Siegel disk is of bounded type, we show that on the three-punctured complex plane, the locus of the cubic polynomials with both finite critical points on the boundaries of the Siegel disks on the $2$-cycle is comprised of two arcs, corresponding to the cases with two critical points on the boundary of the same Siegel disk, and a Jordan curve, corresponding to the cases with two critical points on the boundaries of different Siegel disks.

Abstract:We investigate the local integrability and linearizability of a family of three-dimensional polynomial systems with the matrix of the linear approximation having the eigenvalues $1, \zeta, \zeta^2 $, where $\zeta$ is a primitive cubic root of unity. We establish a criterion for the convergence of the Poincaré--Dulac normal form of the systems and examine the relationship between the normal form and integrability. Additionally, we introduce an efficient algorithm to determine the necessary conditions for the integrability of the systems. This algorithm is then applied to a quadratic subfamily of the systems to analyze its integrability and linearizability. Our findings offer insights into the integrability properties of three-dimensional polynomial systems.

Abstract:Consider the projective variety $X_\lambda$ of binary forms of degree $d$ whose linear factors are distributed according to the partition $\lambda$ of $d$. We determine minimal sets of local generators of the fiber product of $X_\lambda$ with its normalization, and we show that the local Jacobian matrices of this product contain the product of the identity matrix of maximal rank with a unit. We use this to fill a gap in a crucial proof in Chipalkatti's "On equations defining Coincident Root Loci". Also, we give a new description of the singular locus of $X_\lambda$ and a criterion for the smoothness of $X_\lambda$.

Webs and squabs of conics over finite fields

Abstract:This paper is a contribution towards a solution for the longstanding open problem of classifying linear systems of conics over finite fields initiated by L. E. Dickson in 1908, through his study of the projective equivalence classes of pencils of conics in $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$, for $q$ odd. In this paper a set of complete invariants is determined for the projective equivalence classes of webs and of squabs of conics in $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$, both for $q$ odd and even. Our approach is mainly geometric, and involves a comprehensive study of the geometric and combinatorial properties of the Veronese surface in $\mathrm{PG}(5,q)$. The main contribution is the determination of the distribution of the different types of hyperplanes incident with the $K$-orbit representatives of points and lines of $\mathrm{PG}(5,q)$, where $K\cong\mathrm{PGL}(3,q)$, is the subgroup of $\mathrm{PGL}(6,q)$ stabilizing the Veronese surface.

Characteristic polynomials of isometries of even unimodular lattices

Abstract:E. Bayer-Fluckiger gave a necessary and sufficient condition for a polynomial to be realized as the characteristic polynomial of a semisimple isometry of an even unimodular lattice, by describing the local-global obstruction, and the author extended the result. This article presents a systematic way to compute the obstruction. As an application, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a Salem number of degree $10$ or $18$ to be realized as the dynamical degree of an automorphism of nonprojective K3 surface, in terms of its minimal polynomial.

Nonnegative Polynomials and Moment Problems on Algebraic Curves

Abstract:The cone of nonnegative polynomials is of fundamental importance in real algebraic geometry, but its facial structure is understood in very few cases. We initiate a systematic study of the facial structure of the cone of nonnegative polynomials $\pos$ on a smooth real projective curve $X$. We show that there is a duality between its faces and totally real effective divisors on $X$. This allows us to fully describe the face lattice in case $X$ has genus $1$. The dual cone $\pos^\vee$ is known as the moment cone, and it plays an important role in real analysis. We compute the Carathéodory number of $\pos^\vee$ for an elliptic normal curve $X$, which measures the complexity of quadrature rules of measures supported on $X$. This number can also be interpreted as a maximal typical Waring rank with nonnegative coefficients. Interestingly, the topology of the real locus of $X$ influences the Carathéodory number of $\pos^\vee$. We apply our results to truncated moment problems on affine cubic curves, where we deduce sharp bounds on the flat extension degree.
