Abstract:Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is one of the most important modalities for the diagnosis of digestive tract diseases. EUS has been evolving ever since it was introduced. New techniques such as elastography and contrast enhancement have emerged, increasing the accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of EUS for the diagnosis of digestive tract diseases including pancreatic masses and lymphadenopathy. EUS-elastography evaluates tissue elasticity and therefore, can be used to differentiate various lesions. Contrast-enhanced EUS can distinguish benign from malignant pancreatic lesions and lymphadenopathy using the intravenous injection of contrast agents. This review discusses the principles and types of these new techniques, as well as their clinical applications and limitations.

Abstract:The conventional ultrasound and color doppler ultrasound have been a focus in the field of emergency and critical care medicine in recent years,but cannot evaluate the microcirculation perfusion quantitatively.Thus,their diagnostic accuracy in predicting clinical outcomes for critically ill patients is suboptimal.Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is based on conventional ultrasound in which ultrasound contrast agent is used to enhance echo and signal intensity,and helps to characterize tissue perfusion more clearly and dynamically.It has been widely used in the field of emergency and critical care medicine,such as the location and dynamic evaluation of traumatic lesions,renal microcirculation monitoring for the acute kidney injury (AKI) and accuracy evaluation of central venous catheterization.CEUS provides a simple,non-invasive and effective way for clinical diagnosis and treatment of critically ill patients.

Abstract:Medical ultrasonic imaging system is one of the main imaging equipment for clinical disease diagnosis. There is a growing demand, but lack of comprehensive evaluation system for the product. In this paper, we described the present status of the evaluation of medical ultrasonic imaging system. From the aspects of clinical function, effect, performance, suitability, experience design and service system, a comprehensive evaluation system was established and accurate training research was carried out for the ultrasound operators, which would provide guidance for the developing direction of research and service of ultrasonic manufactures.

Abstract:With the rapid advancement of tracking technologies, the applications of tracking systems in ultrasound imaging have expanded across a wide range of fields. In this review article, we discuss the basic tracking principles, system components, performance analyses, as well as the main sources of error for popular tracking technologies that are utilized in ultrasound imaging. In light of the growing demand for object tracking, this article explores both the potential and challenges associated with different tracking technologies applied to various ultrasound imaging applications, including freehand 3D ultrasound imaging, ultrasound image fusion, ultrasound-guided intervention and treatment. Recent development in tracking technology has led to increased accuracy and intuitiveness of ultrasound imaging and navigation with less reliance on operator skills, thereby benefiting the medical diagnosis and treatment. Although commercially available tracking systems are capable of achieving sub-millimeter resolution for positional tracking and sub-degree resolution for orientational tracking, such systems are subject to a number of disadvantages, including high costs and time-consuming calibration procedures. While some emerging tracking technologies are still in the research stage, their potentials have been demonstrated in terms of the compactness, light weight, and easy integration with existing standard or portable ultrasound machines.

Abstract:Recent developments in 4D ultrasound imaging technology allow clinicians to obtain not only rich visual information but also quantitative data that can be used for diagnosis and treatment. Some argue that the extension of 2D ultrasound is unnecessary and does not offer any benefits to diagnosis, while others argue that it is possible to better assess an abnormality in 3D than 2D. Anatomy can be reconstructed in perspectives that were never seen with conventional 2D US imaging. Advanced rendering techniques in three dimensions can be customized to be sensitive to specific pathology, thus making diagnosis more accurate. Volume and function of certain anatomical components can be measured with greater accuracy. This article reviews physical principles behind the ultrasound technology, how they are applied to advance the field of ultrasound imaging, and maybe reach its limits. Advances in ultrasound technology make 4D ultrasound imaging faster and less dependent on the operator's expertise, thus opening up more research possibilities in the fields of data processing and visualization. Currently, 4D ultrasound is extensively used in the field of obstetrics and interven-tional radiology. The goal of 4D ultrasound is to overcome the limitations posed by its predecessor technology and to be more clinically useful as an imaging tool.

Abstract:Medical ultrasound imaging uses pulsed acoustic waves that are transmitted and received by a hand-held transducer. This is a mature technology that it is widely used around the world. Among its advantages are that it is cost-effective, flexible, and does not require ionizing radiation. However, the image quality is affected by degradation of ultrasound signals when propagating through biological tissues. Many efforts have been done in the last three decades to improve the quality of the images. This paper reviews some of the most important methods for ultrasound enhancement. We classified these techniques into two groups: preprocessing and post-processing, analyzed their benefits and limitations, and presented our beliefs about where ultrasound research could be directed to, in order to improve its effectiveness and broaden its applications.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:At present, the number and overall level of ultrasound (US) doctors cannot meet the medical needs, and the medical ultrasound robots will largely solve the shortage of medical resources. METHODS:According to the degree of automation, the handheld, semi-automatic and automatic ultrasound examination robot systems are summarised. Ultrasound scanning path planning and robot control are the keys to ensure that the robot systems can obtain high-quality images. Therefore, the ultrasound scanning path planning and control methods are summarised. The research progress and future trends are discussed. RESULTS:A variety of ultrasound robot systems have been applied to various medical works. With the continuous improvement of automation, the systems provide high-quality ultrasound images and image guidance for clinicians. CONCLUSION:Although the development of medical ultrasound robot still faces challenges, with the continuous progress of robot technology and communication technology, medical ultrasound robot will have great development potential and broad application space.

Abstract:Ultrasound imaging is one of the most widely used imaging techniques in the world due to its non-invasive,non-radioactive, cheap and real-time imaging features. The introduction of ultrasound contrast agents improves the sensitivity and resolution of ultrasonic images, further expanding the application of ultrasound imaging in clinical practice. In the recent years, the concept of ultrasound molecular imaging was put forward with the development of molecular biology and ultrasound imaging technology.This new technology, which combines ultrasound technology with molecule-targeted contrast agents for assessing the biological processes at the molecular level, is still in its infancy. However, many preclinical studies have showed that ultrasound molecular imaging showed prospect in assessing angiogenesis, inflammation, and thrombus. This review outlines the recent progress in ultrasound contrast agents and the potential applications of ultrasound molecular imaging in the clinical practice. The existing problems and future directions of ultrasound molecular imaging technology were also proposed at the end of the paper.
A New Method for High Frame-Rate and High Quality Medical Imaging

Abstract:Contrast resolution and detail resolution are two key measures of ultrasound diagnostic image quality. Besides high imaging quality, the frame-rate is another important factor for research on tissue motion mechanism and diagnosis of pathological changes. In this paper, based on the principles of phased ultrasound beamforming, we introduce a new method which can not only improve frame-rate but also enhance image quality. Mainlobe width controlling and sidelobes suppressing are employed to improve image resolution, fewer and wider transmit beams combined with four parallel receive beams is used to increase the frame-rate by a factor of four. Simulation results demonstrate that the image quality using this method is much better than conventional beamformed image of wired targets, such as Hanning Window weighting and Rectangle Window weighting. This method also has the advantages of possibility of real time implementation.

Abstract:Ultrasound computed tomography (UCT) is a new revolution imaging technique in clinic, which was first proposed by Greenleaf from Mayo Clinic in 1980's, and become active in recent 10 years. In this study, we present our research advances in UCT, both techniques and clinic applications. First, an ultrasound computed tomography imaging technique to solve the small breast problem is introduced, which a set of moldings made of solid gel coupling agent (SGCA) are designed for shaping the small breast in UCT, such that a high quality and complete breast can be acquired; secondly, a new UCT technique based on sparse representation and AI technology is developed, which can greatly speed up the imaging speed in UCT by sparsely emission instead of full complete emission; finally many clinic application examples are described to demonstrate the possible potential application in clinic. Furthermore, the future works in UCT in HUST are given.

Abstract:The present study highlights the advances in ultrasound, especially regarding its clinical applications to critically ill patients. Artificial intelligence (AI) is crucial in automating image interpretation, improving accuracy and efficiency. Software has been developed to make it easier to perform accurate bedside ultrasound examinations, even by professionals lacking prior experience, with automatic image optimization. In addition, some applications identify cardiac structures, perform planimetry of the Doppler wave, and measure the size of vessels, which is especially useful in hemodynamic monitoring and continuous recording. The "strain" and "strain rate" parameters evaluate ventricular function, while "auto strain" automates its calculation from bedside images. These advances, and the automatic determination of ventricular volume, make ultrasound monitoring more precise and faster. The next step is continuous monitoring using gel devices attached to the skin.

Abstract:Photoacoustic (PA) imaging is a non-invasive biomedical imaging technique that combines the benefits of optics and acoustics to provide high-resolution structural and functional information. This review highlights the emergence of three-dimensional handheld PA imaging systems as a promising approach for various biomedical applications. These systems are classified into four techniques: direct imaging with 2D ultrasound (US) arrays, mechanical-scanning-based imaging with 1D US arrays, mirror-scanning-based imaging, and freehand-scanning-based imaging. A comprehensive overview of recent research in each imaging technique is provided, and potential solutions for system limitations are discussed. This review will serve as a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners interested in advancements and opportunities in three-dimensional handheld PA imaging technology.

Abstract:A system for in vitro investigation of ultrasound contrast agent's enhancement effect is presented and evaluated.It includes the digital B-mode ultrasound scanner Belson3000A,the tissue-mimicking ultrasound phantoms and the software which is used for image quantitative analysis.The linear range,optimal settings and repeatability of the system are assessed and explored by scanning the ultrasound phantoms with different reflective intensities.The measurements are performed under an acoustic power from 4.8 to 12.3 mW,the scanner centre frequency is 3.5 MH and the gain setting is 50 dB.Both a self-made surfactant encapsulated microbubble and a commercial ultrasound contrast agent are scanned.The results show that the pixei intensity of ultrasonic images increases with the increase in the sound power,and for the stronger reflective phantoms of more particles,the increasing trend is much more evident.The system is optimal for evaluating the microbubble contrast agents' enhancement effects.It presents a simple, effective and real-time means for characterizing the enhancement ability of microbubbles.

Abstract:Ultrasound/photoacoustic dual-modality imaging technology has greatly promoted the clinical application and photoacoustic imaging technology because it integrates the advantages of high-resolution structural imaging of ultrasound and high-contrast functional imaging of photoacoustic imaging. Traditional ultrasound/photoacoustic dual-modality imaging is based mainly on the array probe used in ultrasound imaging to collect photoacoustic signals at the same time. The system has a compact structure and easy operation. However, this kind of equipment utilizes array probes and multi-channel data acquisition system, which makes it expensive. And the imaging quality can be affected by the difference in channel consistency. In this paper, an ultrasound/photoacoustic dual-modality imaging method based on an acoustic scanning galvanometer is proposed. In this system, a single ultrasonic transducer combined with a one-dimensional acoustic scanning galvanometer is used for fast acoustic beam scanning to realize ultrasound/photoacoustic dual-modality imaging. It is a compact, low-cost and fast dual-modality imaging technology. The experimental results show that the effective imaging range of the system is 15.6 mm, and the temporal resolution of ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging are 1.0 and 0.1 s –1 (B scan), respectively (the temporal resolution of photoacoustic imaging is limited mainly by the laser repetition rate). Based on the proposed technology research, it is helpful to further promote the clinical transformation and popularization of ultrasound/photoacoustic dual-modality imaging. It also provides a low-cost, miniaturized and fast scheme for multimodal imaging technology which is based on ultrasound signal detection.

Abstract:Real time dynamic three dimensional ultrasound imaging based on two-dimensional array transducers is an important issue of advanced medical ultrasound imaging and a newest trend of three dimensional ultrasound imaging which can provide symmetrical focused beam and multi-planar images.In this paper,the principle,design and fabrication of two-dimensional array transducers and the related reconstruction and rendering techniques were described.The limitations and improved methods of the technique were discussed based on the analysis of its clinical application.

Abstract:Point-of-care ultrasound demonstrates significant potential in biomedical research due to its noninvasive, real-time visualization, cost-effectiveness, and other biological benefits. Ultrasound irradiation can precisely control the mechanical and physicochemical effects on pathogenic lesions, enabling real-time visualization, tunable tissue penetration depth, and therapeutic applications. This review summarizes recent advancements in ultrasound-enabled diagnostics and therapeutics, focusing on mechanochemical effects that can be directly integrated into biomedical applications. Additionally, the structure-functionality relationships of sonotheranostic nanoplatforms are systematically discussed, providing insights into the underlying biological effects. Finally, the limitations of current ultrasonic medicine are discussed, along with potential expansions to facilitate patient-centered translations.

Abstract:We updated a clinical photoacoustic (PA)/ultrasound(US) handheld scanner and an imaging system to enhance clinical usability and enable wide-field volumetric PA/US imaging. The scanner was optimized for the weight and dimensions of 600 g and 70 × 62 × 110 mm3, respectively, which is 60 and 63 % of the previous scanner, respectively. The imaging system enabled online maximum amplitude projection (MAP) imaging, which provided images of n × 25 × 38 mm2, where n is the number of scans. We believe that the system and scanner can be useful for a variety of clinical applications.

Abstract:Ultrasound-mediated diagnosis techniques have consistently attracted worldwide attention. Compared with other medical-diagnosis methods, relatively distinguished features of ultrasound being readily accessible, swift, inexpensive, and safe make it routinely used for diverse purposes. With the development of ultrasound-imaging devices, the recent advent of ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs) has expanded the sphere of ultrasound's influence to therapy. UCAs, which are generally gas-filled and microsized bubbles, have been grafted onto multifunctional particles or molecules to selectively detect various diseases and effectively treat them. Additionally, nanosized bubbles as well as microsized bubbles have lately received a lot of attention since the phase-transition behavior of the bubbles is observed under certain conditions. The focus here is an introduction to and the preparation of therapeutic and multimodal UCAs. Also, high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), among the ultrasound-mediated techniques, which enables researchers and health-care providers to overcome existing approaches, is described in depth. To close, the future and challenges of diagnosis and therapy with ultrasound are reviewed.
