Abstract:Ultrasound is extensively studied for biomedical engineering applications. As the core part of the ultrasonic system, the ultrasound transducer plays a significant role. For the purpose of meeting the requirement of precision medicine, the main challenge for the development of ultrasound transducer is to further enhance its performance. In this article, an overview of recent developments in ultrasound transducer technologies that use a variety of material strategies and device designs based on both the piezoelectric and photoacoustic mechanisms is provided. Practical applications are also presented, including ultrasound imaging, ultrasound therapy, particle/cell manipulation, drug delivery, and nerve stimulation. Finally, perspectives and opportunities are also highlighted.

Abstract:Ultrasonic imaging is one of the most important and still growing diagnostic tools today. Ultrasonic imaging is more appealing as a clinical imaging modality compared to such imaging modalities as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear imaging, and x-ray computed tomography (CT) in that it is more cost-effective, non-invasive, capable of real-time operation, and portable while providing images of comparable quality and resolution. State-of-the-art ultrasonic scanners offer real-time gray scale images of anatomical detail with millimeter spatial resolution superimposed on which is a map of Doppler blood flow information displayed in color. Clinical applications of these devices are still expanding and the operating frequencies of these devices seem to inch higher and higher. High frequency (HF) ultrasound (>20 MHz) yields improved spatial resolution at the expense of a shallower depth of penetration. There are a number of clinical problems that may benefit from high frequency ultrasonic imaging. Intravascular imaging with probes mounted on catheter tips at frequencies higher than 20 MHz with the highest frequency being 60 MHz has been used to characterize atherosclerotic plaque and to guide stent placement and angioplastic procedures. The medical efficacy of ultrasonic imaging of anterior segments of the eye at frequencies higher than 50 MHz in diagnosing glaucoma and ocular tumors and in assisting refractive surgery has been demonstrated. Applications in dermatology for defining tumor involvement and for monitoring treatment, in vascular surgery for characterizing atherosclerotic plaques, and in small animal imaging are also being investigated. To further expand the role of HF ultrasound, probe performance must be improved since current HF ultrasound imaging devices, dubbed “ultrasound biomicroscopes” or “UBMs” by a number of investigators use mechanically scanned single element transducers. Compared to electronic scanning with linear arrays, mechanical scanning of a single element transducer has three major drawbacks: poorer resolution, slower frame rate, and motion of the probe. Single element transducers can only produce beams with a fixed focus which means the spatial resolution of the device is best only within the depth of focus, i.e., in a very tight zone and degrades rapidly beyond the focal point. Mechanical motion of the transducer limits the frame rate, is unreliable, and may cause discomfort and, at worst, hazard to the patient. My presentation will introduce several HF ultrasound transducers currently being developed by the NIH Transducer Resource Center at the University of California. Emphasis will be placed on the construction and implementation of high frequency array transducers. Learning Objectives: 1. Abstract:The ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) ultrasonic transducers are active in various fields, including nondestructive evaluation in the semiconductor industry, microscopic biological organization imaging in biomedicine, particle manipulation, and so on. In these fields ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) ultrasonic transducers play a critical role in the performance of related equipment. This article will focus on the topic of ultrahigh-frequency ultrasonic transducers’ preparation, and reviews three aspects: material selection, focus design, and acoustic energy transmission matching. Provides a summary of the current research status, and puts forward some views on the future development of UHF ultrasound devices.

Abstract:Over the past decades, ultrasound imaging technology has made tremendous progress in obtaining important diagnostic information from patients in a rapid, noninvasive manner. Although the technology has benefited from sophisticated signal processing technology and imaging system integration, much of this progress has been derived from the development of ultrasonic transducers that are in direct contact with patients. An overview of medical ultrasonic imaging transducers is presented in this review that describes their structure, types, and application fields. The structural components of a typical transducer are presented in detail including an active layer, acoustic matching layers, a backing block, an acoustic lens, and kerfs. The types of transducers are classified according to the dimensions of ultrasound images: one-dimensional array, mechanical wobbling, and two-dimensional array transducers. Advantages of each transducer over the other and the technical issues for further performance enhancement are described. Application of the transducers to various clinical imaging fields is also reviewed.

Abstract:Recent advances in electronics and digital processing techniques have significantly improved conventional ultrasonic imaging systems and allowed the development of new and sophisticated scanning methods. As a result, ultrasonic imaging devices have become an important modality for the clinical radiologist, complimenting the images obtained from X-ray and nuclear cameras. A particular advantage of ultrasonic waves is that they are nonionizing, thus presenting less risk to both patient and examiner. This paper presents some of the basic principles of ultrasonic propagation in tissue and how those principles impact the design of imaging devices. The characteristics of both the B- scan and C-scan techniques are described along with a summary of various scan formats that are currently available. Examples of B-scan and C-scan instruments are presented along with their relative advantages, limitations, and current usage;representative images are presented whenever possible. This paper concludes with a description of some new research developments in this rapidly emerging technology.

Abstract:Point-of-care ultrasound demonstrates significant potential in biomedical research due to its noninvasive, real-time visualization, cost-effectiveness, and other biological benefits. Ultrasound irradiation can precisely control the mechanical and physicochemical effects on pathogenic lesions, enabling real-time visualization, tunable tissue penetration depth, and therapeutic applications. This review summarizes recent advancements in ultrasound-enabled diagnostics and therapeutics, focusing on mechanochemical effects that can be directly integrated into biomedical applications. Additionally, the structure-functionality relationships of sonotheranostic nanoplatforms are systematically discussed, providing insights into the underlying biological effects. Finally, the limitations of current ultrasonic medicine are discussed, along with potential expansions to facilitate patient-centered translations.

This paper is an outline that depicts the medical ultrasound transducer applications and most recent researches and developments in this area.The paper consists of three portions. According to the applications of the current medical ultrasound imaging systems, the first section introduces the different categories of medical ultrasound transducers. In the second section, three important medical ultrasound technologies are described, which may be either involved in the last two decades or undergoing recently. The last section points up an important tendency of new development of medical ultrasound transducer.

Abstract:This issue of Clinical Hemorheology and Microcirculation is dedicated to the developments in the application of high resolution ultrasound in clinical diagnostics.The editors sought to provide information on the latest procedures for ultrasound bringing together outstanding original articles and reviews about new diagnostic information obtained by recent technological advances but also clarify well-established or controversial subjects.A very important step forward in ultrasound technology towards clinical application was the introduction of microbubbles as contrast enhancer.Contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS), performed with the intravenous injection of microbubble contrast agents applying the low mechanical index (MI) technique of contrast harmonic imaging has expanded the horizon for ultrasound imaging.CEUS provides a technique with superb sensitivity from early arterial phase up to late venous enhancement in dynamic realtime vascular imaging.For the first time, this ultrasound technology allows the non-invasive demonstration of blood flow of inner organs at a microcirculatory level [1,2].Further, the purely intravascular microbubbles enable ultrasound to be used to monitor changes in the blood flow of tumors and in inflamed areas in a diagnostic approach but also for therapy control.Its performance without any requirement for ionizing radiation and with no nephrotoxicity makes it a compelling choice in many clinical arenas and is now FDA approved for liver imaging, and also for children [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8].In this special issue, a first study evaluated factors which are associated with the initial incomplete ablation in radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for thyroid nodules [2].Recent intraoperative studies reported the results of CEUS for immediate assessment of ablation status after RFA of hepatic malignancies [3].These two articles showed the benefit of CEUS in the treatment control for ablation of solid nodules in various organs in terms of the virtues of CEUS such as real-time scanning, easy performance, and immediate assessment.In addition to qualitative evaluation for characterization [4,5], quantitative evaluation of blood flow perfusion is also available with use of CEUS [6].Other important applications are the assessment of vascular diseases such as vascular complications after liver transplantation or the detection of endoleaks after endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) [7,8] or post-operative complications [9].

Abstract:Medical ultrasonic imaging technique has been widely used clinically. Unfortunately, the resolution of ultrasonic imaging is much lower than that of X-CT. In order to improve the resolution of ultrasonic imaging, efforts have been made in the field of tissue characterization in past decades. The objective of ultrasonic tissue characterization is to extract characteristic acoustic parameters from the ultrasonic echoes quantitatively, to reconstruct the medical imaging with these parameters, and then to improve the resolution of ultrasonic imaging and the effectiveness of diagnosis. In this article, the basic methods used in the area of ultrasonic tissue characterization is discussed and the progresses on integrated backscatter and elastogram are introduced. Some potential problems for further research are also discussed.

Abstract:At present, medical ultrasound technology is gradually developing from the traditional imagingof tissue and organ structure based on wave effect of ultrasound, and the treatment of diseased tissue based on thermal and cavitation effects, to the direction of multi-functional integration of diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, asone of the most important biological effects, the mechanical effect of ultrasound (i.e. acoustic radiation force) hasattracted more and more attention from scientific researchers and medical staffs. Benefiting from the in-depthunderstanding of the theory and mechanism of ultrasonic mechanical effect, as well as the rapid development ofinformation and electronic technology, a variety of new ultrasonic diagnosis and treatment technologies based onacoustic radiation force have emerged in recent years, which have greatly expanded the application of ultrasoundin clinics. For example, ultrasound elastography that can quantitatively measure the tissue stiffness and image itsdistribution, which can provide early screening for liver cirrhosis and breast cancer; as well as ultrasound neuromodulation that can non-invasively regulate the state of nerve cells in the brain, which can provide unique toolsfor brain disease treatment and neuroscience research. This article will systematically introduce the representativeachievements of these new medical ultrasound technologies based on the mechanical effect of ultrasound in recentyears, and analyze their future development directions.

Abstract:Ultrasound imaging is one of the most widely used imaging techniques in the world due to its non-invasive,non-radioactive, cheap and real-time imaging features. The introduction of ultrasound contrast agents improves the sensitivity and resolution of ultrasonic images, further expanding the application of ultrasound imaging in clinical practice. In the recent years, the concept of ultrasound molecular imaging was put forward with the development of molecular biology and ultrasound imaging technology.This new technology, which combines ultrasound technology with molecule-targeted contrast agents for assessing the biological processes at the molecular level, is still in its infancy. However, many preclinical studies have showed that ultrasound molecular imaging showed prospect in assessing angiogenesis, inflammation, and thrombus. This review outlines the recent progress in ultrasound contrast agents and the potential applications of ultrasound molecular imaging in the clinical practice. The existing problems and future directions of ultrasound molecular imaging technology were also proposed at the end of the paper.

Abstract:Piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers have shown great potential in biomedical applications due to their high acoustic-to-electric conversion efficiency and large power capacity. The focusing technique enables the transducer to produce an extremely narrow beam, greatly improving the resolution and sensitivity. In this work, we summarize the fundamental properties and biological effects of the ultrasound field, aiming to establish a correlation for device design and application. Focusing techniques for piezoelectric transducers are highlighted, including material selection and fabrication methods, which determine the final performance of piezoelectric transducers. Numerous examples from ultrasound imaging, neuromodulation, tumor ablation to ultrasonic wireless energy transfer are summarized to highlight the great promise of biomedical applications. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of focused ultrasound transducers are presented. The aim of this review is to bridge the gap between focused ultrasound systems and biomedical applications.

Abstract:Thin-film piezoelectric micromachined ultrasound transducers (PMUTs) are an increasingly relevant and well-researched field, and their biomedical importance has been growing as the technology continues to mature. This review article briefly discusses their history in biomedical use, provides a simple explanation of their principles for newer readers, and sheds light on the materials selection for these devices. Primarily, it discusses the significant applications of PMUTs in the biomedical industry and showcases recent progress that has been made in each application. The biomedical applications covered include common historical uses of ultrasound such as ultrasound imaging, ultrasound therapy, and fluid sensing, but additionally new and upcoming applications such as drug delivery, photoacoustic imaging, thermoacoustic imaging, biometrics, and intrabody communication. By including a device comparison chart for different applications, this review aims to assist microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) designers that work with PMUTs by providing a benchmark for recent research works. Furthermore, it puts forth a discussion on the current challenges being faced by PMUTs in the biomedical field, current and likely future research trends, and opportunities for PMUT development areas, as well as sharing the opinions and predictions of the authors on the state of this technology as a whole. The review aims to be a comprehensive introduction to these topics without diving excessively deep into existing literature.

Abstract:This review looks at highlights of the development in ultrasound, ranging from interventional ultrasound and Doppler to the newest techniques like contrast-enhanced ultrasound and elastography, and gives reference to some of the valuable articles in Acta Radiologica. Ultrasound equipment is now available in any size and for any purpose, ranging from handheld devices to high-end devices, and the scientific societies include ultrasound professionals of all disciplines publishing guidelines and recommendations. Interventional ultrasound is expanding the field of use of ultrasound-guided interventions into nearly all specialties of medicine, from ultrasound guidance in minimally invasive robotic procedures to simple ultrasound-guided punctures performed by general practitioners. Each medical specialty is urged to define minimum requirements for equipment, education, training, and maintenance of skills, also for medical students. The clinical application of contrast-enhanced ultrasound and elastography is a topic often seen in current research settings.

Abstract:Medical ultrasound scanners are widely used in hospitals all over the world for diagnostic purposes.While many technological improvements have been achieved over the years that resulted in better images,a large number of patients are still difficult to image due to inhomogeneous skin layers and limited penetration.In recent years,harmonic frenquency is adopted in tissue imaging and contrast agents imaging,which improves the image quality.Harmonics in ultrasound are generated by tissue or by contrast agents.Contrast-agent harmonics are generated by reflections from the injected contrast agent and not from reflections from tissue.When no contrast is employed,harmonics are generated by tissue itself as a result of nonlinear propagation.Harmonic imaging of tissues or contrast agent forces an inherent compromise between image resolution and contrast that limits its sensitivity to nonlinear signals.This paper describes the technical progress of harmonic imaging briefly.Its clinical application prospect has been discussed also.
