Abstract:The difference between the process pinch and network pinch hasbeen analyzed. In process modification, network pinches often exist and usually control the energy-saving potential. In this paper, the methods to overcome the network pinch are proposed, namely stream splits and modification of heat exchanger network. A case study is used to show how to overcome the network pinch without fluid splitting, i.e. cold fluids (hot fluids) should be heated (cooled) in turn according to the reducing order of heat capacity ratios at the same temperature range. "One modification" is introduced in the retrofit of the process and shows the notable energy-saving and economic benefit.
