Abstract:We report an unprecedented assembling performance of amide-containing, homo-structured poly(N-alkylacrylamide)s, through which they can assemble into discrete spherical particles with size ranging from tens of nanometres to several micrometres. For a specific polymer, a facile control over topology and scale of assembled structures can be accomplished via solvent conditions. Assembling using appropriate solvent gives rise to capsule-like assemblies. The molecular structure of polymers, such as the side chain chemistry and topology display striking impact on the size and morphology of resulting assemblies. These polymers might function as novel model systems for investigating complex functions performed by amide moieties in proteins, while this assembling offers a simple, facile but powerful and cost-effective manufacturing route for nano- or microstructured materials that may find great potential in diverse applications varying from cosmetics, drug delivery, nanomedicine, to biotechnology.

Abstract:A polymer nanocomposite film decorated with highly dispersive nanoparticles was prepared by a liquid-liquid interface induced self-assembly method based on a breath figure process. The distribution as well as the orientation preference of the Janus particles within the polymer matrix could be dynamically controlled by adjusting the environmental conditions. Antibacterial and photocatalytic functionality was obtained for the nanocomposite films decorated with silver and titanium dioxide nanoparticles, respectively.

Abstract:Multilayer nanocomposite films composed of negative charged Ag nanosized particles and cationic polyallylamine hydrochloride (PAH) molecules were fabricated on polymer modified single-crystal silicon and flat glass slides by a layer-by-layer (LBL) molecular self-assembly technique. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed that the formed Ag particles successfully absorbed onto the positively charged surfaces. The atomic force microscopy image of a two-cycle Ag/PAH bilayer film showed that no surface damage or defects existed on the thin-films surface. The Ag particles were densely and homogeneously distributed on the surface and relatively uniform in size. Goniometry was employed to verify the assembly process and the water contact angles oscillated regularly, depending on the composition of the outermost layer. By using the LBL deposition technique, a molecular-level ordered multilayer film with the thickness up to 40 layers (20 bilayers) was obtained. Results from UV–vis spectroscopy and ellipsometry measurements revealed that the self-assembly of the Ag/PAH multilayer film was well quantitative and reproducible. Thus we can conclude that the consecutive LBL deposition technique is a feasible and effective way to produce multilayer film and control the surface properties.

Abstract:The self-assembly of inorganic nanoparticles is of great importance in realizing their enormous potentials for broad applications due to the advanced collective properties of nanoparticle ensembles. Various molecular ligands (e.g., small molecules, DNAs, proteins, and polymers) have been used to assist the organization of inorganic nanoparticles into functional structures at different hierarchical levels. Among others, polymers are particularly attractive for use in nanoparticle assembly, because of the complex architectures and rich functionalities of assembled structures enabled by polymers. Polymer-guided assembly of nanoparticles has emerged as a powerful route to fabricate functional materials with desired mechanical, optical, electronic or magnetic properties for a broad range of applications such as sensing, nanomedicine, catalysis, energy storage/conversion, data storage, electronics and photonics. In this review article, we summarize recent advances in the polymer-guided self-assembly of inorganic nanoparticles in both bulk thin films and solution, with an emphasis on the role of polymers in the assembly process and functions of resulting nanostructures. Precise control over the location/arrangement, interparticle interaction, and packing of inorganic nanoparticles at various scales are highlighted.
Preparation of Hybrid Polymer Nanocomposite Microparticles by a Nanoparticle Stabilised Dispersion Polymerisation

Abstract:We report the use of nanoparticles to stabilise free radical dispersion polymerisations, without the need for any conventional stabiliser, leading to the preparation of polystyrene nanocomposites. The products are well characterised spherical polymer microparticles decorated with nanoparticles on their surfaces. In this paper we demonstrate the process with Fe3O4nanoparticles yielding a product with a strong magnetic property. By using this in situpolymerisation technique, not only can nanoparticles in aqueous solution be harvested, but also this provides a completely new route to polymer composites. Thus, functional nanoparticles can be immobilised onto the surface of the polymer beads to modify significantly their properties.

Abstract:Nanoparticle self-assembly has emerged as an indispensable tool in designing structured materials with a wide range of applications, but quantitatively predicting the assembly process and structures still remains challenging. Drawing inspiration from the toolbox of molecular reactions and behaviors is of utmost importance in further advancement of principles and theories for assembling nanoparticles at a length scale orders of magnitude larger. Here we represent a general paradigm for the predictive self-assembly of binary inorganic nanoparticles into linear nanostructures in periodic sequence by expanding the horizon of alternating copolymerization at the molecular level to nanoscale colloidal systems. Nanoparticles grafted with reactive block copolymers are viewed as nanoscale monomers ("nanomers"), and the rapid dimerization of co-nanomers into molecular dipole-like dimers, resembling the preferential formation of dimeric intermediates or charge-transfer complexes from co-monomers in molecular copolymerization, is crucial to the organization of co-nanomers in alternating sequence. We also demonstrate that the classic kinetics and statistics of polycondensation of molecular alternating copolymers (e.g., Nylon-66) can be utilized to quantitatively predict the copolymerization process of nanomers.

Abstract:Organic–inorganic nanocomposite particles, possessing defined morphologies, represent the next frontier in advanced materials due to their superior collective performance. In this pursuit of efficient preparation of composite nanoparticles, a series of diblock polymers polystyrene-block-poly(tert-butyl acrylate) (PS-b-PtBA) were initially synthesized using the Living Anionic Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly (LAP PISA) technique. Subsequently, the tert-butyl group on the tert-butyl acrylate (tBA) monomer unit in the diblock copolymer, yielded from the LAP PISA process, was subjected to hydrolysis using trifluoroacetic acid (CF3COOH), transforming it into carboxyl groups. This resulted in the formation of polystyrene-block-poly(acrylic acid) (PS-b-PAA) nano-self-assembled particles of various morphologies. The pre-hydrolysis diblock copolymer PS-b-PtBA produced nano-self-assembled particles of irregular shapes, whereas post-hydrolysis regular spherical and worm-like nano-self-assembled particles were generated. Utilizing PS-b-PAA nano-self-assembled particles that containing carboxyl groups as polymer templates, Fe3O4 was integrated into the core region of the nano-self-assembled particles. This was achieved based on the complexation between the carboxyl groups on the PAA segments and the metal precursors, facilitating the successful synthesis of organic–inorganic composite nanoparticles with Fe3O4 as the core and PS as the shell. These magnetic nanoparticles hold potential applications as functional fillers in the plastic and rubber sectors.

Abstract:Monomers of methacrylate with various pi -conjugated pendants were designed and prepared in our laboratory, The monomer with suitable end-group was successfully assembled with nano-scale inorganic particles to form an orderly-aligned structure that showed special optical properties, both absorption and emission band were much red-shifted compared with the monomer, A new type of organic/inorganic hybrid materials was obtained by in situ polymerization of the assembly, The hybrid materials could also show special optical properties as the assembly, This might open a new route to tune the emission color.

Abstract:Concerns of petroleum dependence and environmental pollution prompt an urgent need for new sustainable approaches in developing polymeric products. Biobased polymers provide a potential solution, and biobased nanocomposites further enhance the performance and functionality of biobased polymers. Here we summarize the unique challenges and review recent progress in this field with an emphasis on self-assembly of inorganic nanoparticles. The conventional wisdom is to fully disperse nanoparticles in the polymer matrix to optimize the performance. However, self-assembly of the nanoparticles into clusters, networks, and layered structures provides an opportunity to address performance challenges and create new functionality in biobased polymers. We introduce basic assembly principles through both blending and in situ synthesis, and identify key technologies that benefit from the nanoparticle assembly in the polymer matrix. The fundamental forces and biobased polymer conformations are discussed in detail to correlate the nanoscale interactions and morphology with the macroscale properties. Different types of nanoparticles, their assembly structures and corresponding applications are surveyed. Through this review we hope to inspire the community to consider utilizing self-assembly to elevate functionality and performance of biobased materials. Development in this area sets the foundation for a new era of designing sustainable polymers in many applications including packaging, construction chemicals, adhesives, foams, coatings, personal care products, and advanced manufacturing.
Novel polymer nanocomposite composed of organic nanoparticles via self-assembly

Abstract:We report a novel class of polymer nanocomposite composed of organic nanoparticles dispersed in polymer matrix, with the particle sizes of 30-120 nm in radius. The organic nanoparticles were formed by the self-assembly of protonated poly(4-vinyl-pyridine)-r-poly(acrylonitrile) and amphiphilic metanil yellow dye molecules through electrostatic interactions in aqueous solution. A strongly broadened Raman shift band was probed, suggesting the presence of enhanced optoelectronic property from the polymer nanocomposite. Here, using random-copolymer polyelectrolytes and mesogenic amphiphiles as the designed building blocks for self-assembly, a new approach is acutally provided to fabricate organic nanoparticles.

Abstract:In order to improve various properties of PMMA, PAN, and other acrylic polymers, the functionalization of these polymers is attracting more and more attentions using many kinds of inorganic nanofillers, having zero-to two-dimensional structures. The novel mechanical [1,2], thermal [3], optical [4,5], electrical [6-8], and magnetic [9] properties are conveniently brought into the polymer-based nanocomposites and their structure/property relationships have been extensively studied. The properties of the polymer matrices are greatly affected by the adventitious inorganic nanoparticles and the preparation methods of nanocomposites. Normally, by the addition of 0D nanoparticles (such as SiO2, TiO2, ZnO, CdSe, ZnS, Al2O3, etc.), thermal, optical properties, and bioactivities of these materials can be improved; 1D nanofillers (such as single-walled and multiwalled carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofiber, needle-like attapulgite, etc.) can modulate the electrical properties of the nanocomposites such as conductivity, dielectric properties, and electrorheology; the addition of 2D nanofillers (such as clay, layered silicate, montmorillonite, graphite, and ∗ E-mail: weizhong@fudan.edu.cnmica) can improve the barrier property. The thermal stability and charring property of the nanocomposites are also greatly affected the addition of inorganic fillers.
Hierarchically Structured Nanocomposites Via Mixed-Graft Block Copolymer Templating: Achieving Controlled Nanostructure and Functionality.

Abstract:Integrating inorganic and polymerized organic functionalities to create composite materials presents an efficient strategy for the discovery and fabrication of multifunctional materials. The characteristics of these composites go beyond a simple sum of individual component properties; they are profoundly influenced by the spatial arrangement of these components and the resulting homo-/hetero-interactions. In this work, we develop a facile and highly adaptable approach for crafting nanostructured polymer-inorganic composites, leveraging hierarchically assembling mixed-graft block copolymers (mGBCPs) as templates. These mGBCPs, composed of diverse polymeric side chains that are covalently tethered with a defined sequence to a linear backbone polymer, self-assemble into ordered hierarchical structures with independently tuned nano- and mesoscale lattice features. Through the coassembly of mGBCPs with diversely sized inorganic fillers such as metal ions (ca. 0.1 nm), metal oxide clusters (0.5-2 nm), and metallic nanoparticles (>2 nm), we create three-dimensional filler arrays with controlled interfiller separation and arrangement. Multiple types of inorganic fillers are simultaneously integrated into the mGBCP matrix by introducing orthogonal interactions between distinct fillers and mGBCP side chains. This results in nanocomposites where each type of filler is selectively segregated into specific nanodomains with matrix-defined orientations. The developed coassembly strategy offers a versatile and scalable pathway for hierarchically structured nanocomposites, unlocking new possibilities for advanced materials in the fields of optoelectronics, sensing, and catalysis.

Abstract:Block copolymer-nanoparticle composite nanomaterials provide exciting opportunities as they may display distinctive properties from constituents that are desired in applications including biomedicine, photoelectric materials, and catalytic materials, etc. Block copolymers can self-assemble to various nanoscale structures. The successful distribution of nanoparticles in a particular location of the block copolymer matrix can improve the functional properties of nanoparticles. In this review, the methods for fabricating block copolymer-nonaparticle composite nanomaterials are introduced. Experimental and theoretical progress in the description of these nanostructured block copolymer based hybrid materials is represented. Furthermore, precise assembly and localization of nanoparticle in block copolymer assemblies are of great importance in realizing the formation of nano-hybrids with high performance. The properties and applications of the nanocomposites depend not only on those of individual building blocks but also on their spatial distribution within different morphological aggregates at different length scales. This review also discussed the effect of nanoparticle size, shape and surface chemistry on the selective localization of nanoparticle within block copolymer aggregates. Those factors manipulate the balance between enthalpic and entropic contributions, which provides an opportunity to precisely control the spatial distribution of nanoparticles in block copolymer aggregates. In the end, the self-assembly of block copolymer-nanoparticles in theoretical simulation is introduced. Theoretical and computational simulations offer a unique approach not only to study the evolution and formation of nanostructures,but also to investigate structure-property relationship of hybrid nanocomposites.
Highly dispersed nanocomposites based on polymer/inorganic hybrids and nickel nanoparticles: the role of the matrix structure in the process of in situ formation

Abstract:A series of polymer/inorganic hybrids based on silica sol and polyacrylamide (SiO2-g-PAAm) with different number and length of PAAm chains was obtained by radical graft polymerization of acrylamide from the surface of SiO2. The main molecular and structural parameters of the hybrids, such as the chemical composition, average radius and charge of SiO2 particles, the number of grafts per one particle and their molecular weight, the average diameter and hydrodynamic volume of hybrid particles, and the thickness of the PAA layer, were determined. For this, elemental analysis, DTGA, static light scattering, viscometry, potentiometric titration, and TEM were used. The functional properties of hybrids as hydrophilic matrices in the in situ synthesis of nickel nanoparticles by borohydride reduction of metal ions from the Ni(NO3)2·6H20 salt in an aqueous medium have been studied. Using the method of UV-Vis spectroscopy and the developed original approach, the kinetics and efficiency of the formation of NiNPs in hybrid solutions were characterized, depending on the structure and concentration of the hybrid matrices and the concentration of the metal salt. An increase in the rate of accumulation and yield of NiNPs in solutions of all hybrids was found with an increase in salt concentration in the range of 0,010-0,078 kg·m-3, as well as a predominant decrease in the reaction rate with an increase in the concentration of hybrid matrices from 0,5 to 2,0 kg·m-3. It was shown that the structure of the hybrid matrices, determined by the number and length of PAAm chains, as well as the permeability of the grafted polymer layer, was one of the key factors affecting the formation rate and yield of NiNPs. It provided greater or lesser accessibility of the active groups of the "corona" and the inorganic "core" for metal ions and reducing agent molecules. Morphological studies of purified reduction products were carried out by TEM. Based on them, the main structural elements of highly dispersed NiNPs/SiO2-g-PAAm nanocomposites were established – swollen hairy particles of hybrids with small amorphous NiNPs (1,7±0,8 nm) included in the polymer "corona".

Abstract:Bridging the gap from the nano‐ to the micro‐ and further to the macro‐scale is demonstrated by the co‐assembly of nanosized soft polymeric micelles and hard inorganic nanoparticles. The simple association of soft and hard nanoparticles generates a series of microscale colloidal assemblies, which can be processed into bulk colloidal composites with diverse internal microstructures and customizable macroscopic shapes. Colloidal composites, translating the great potential of nanoscale building bricks into macroscopic dimensions, have emerged as an appealing candidate for new materials with applications in optics, energy storage, and biomedicines. However, it remains a key challenge to bridge the size regimes from nanoscopic colloidal particles to macroscale composites possessing mechanical robustness. Herein, a bottom‐up approach is demonstrated to manufacture colloidal composites with customized macroscopic forms by virtue of the co‐assembly of nanosized soft polymeric micelles and hard inorganic nanoparticles. Upon association, the hairy micellar corona can bind with the hard nanoparticles, linking individual hard constituents together in a soft‐hard alternating manner to form a collective entity. This permits the integration of block copolymer micelles with controlled amounts of hard nanoparticles into macroscopic colloidal composites featuring diverse internal microstructures. The resultant composites showed tunable microscale mechanical strength in a range of 90–270 MPa and macroscale mechanical strength in a range of 7–42 MPa for compression and 2–24 MPa for bending. Notably, the incorporation of soft polymeric micelles also imparts time‐ and temperature‐dependent dynamic deformability and versatile capacity to the resulting composites, allowing their application in the low‐temperature plastic processing for functional fused silica glass.
