Abstract:A pot experiment was conducted in greenhouse to investigate the effects of interspecific below-ground interactions on Cd uptake by intercropped wheat (Triticum aestivum L. ) and rice (Oryza sativa L. ). The experiment was designed to control the extent of root interactions by root barriers with plastic sheet, nylon mesh (30μm) and without root barrier. When rice and wheat root systems were intermingled (without root barrier), both Cd concentrations in shoots of rice and wheat were lower than those in correspondingly monocultured rice or wheat (root barrier with plastic sheet). However, Cd concentration in rice grain was increased by 120% compared to that in monocultured rice grain. Cadmium concentration in the wheat grain was significantly decreased by 40. 4% compared to that in monocultured wheat grain. The results indicate that intercropping could reduce Cd uptake by rice and wheat in shoots, but it has different effects on Cd accumulation in the grain.
