Abstract:Cadmium pollution is becoming a serious problem due to its nondegradability and substantial negative influence on the normal growth of crops, thereby harming human health through the food chain. Rhizospheric bacteria play important roles in crop tolerance. However, there is little experimental evidence which demonstrates how various cadmium concentrations affect the bacterial community in wheat fields including rhizosphere microorganisms and nonrhizosphere (bulk) microorganisms. In this study, 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing technology was used to investigate bacterial communities in rhizosphere and bulk soils under different levels of pollution in terms of cadmium concentration. Both the richness and diversity of the rhizosphere microorganism community were higher under nonpolluted soil and very mild and mild cadmium-contaminated soils than compared with bulk soil, with a shift in community profile observed under severe cadmium pollution. Moreover, cadmium at various concentrations had greater influence on bacterial composition than for the nonpolluted site. In addition, redundancy analysis (RDA) and Spearman’s analysis elucidated the impact of exchangeable Cd and total Cd on bacterial community abundance and composition. This study suggests that cadmium imposes a distinct effect on bacterial community, both in bulk and rhizosphere soils of wheat fields. This study increases our understanding of how bacterial communities in wheat fields shaped under different concentrations of cadmium.

Abstract:To explore the specific effects of pig manure and rice straw on cadmium‐contaminated soils and the effect of different mass fractions of calcium carbonate on cadmium efficacy, a pot experiment was conducted with different rates of pig manure, rice straw, and calcium carbonate. The results showed that pig manure addition increased the soil humic acid/fulvic acid ratio, thereby reducing the available Cd. The addition of calcium carbonate increased the soil pH and reduced the available Cd. The addition of pig manure and calcium carbonate significantly reduced the Cd content of wheat grains by 51.96% and 45.95%, respectively, at 3% and 5% application rates. Rice straw application reduced the soil pH, improved the soil Cd availability, and increased the accumulation of Cd in wheat grains. Compared with that in the control, the grain biomass increased significantly with 3% pig manure and 3% rice straw application, and the grain biomass increased significantly, by 58.86% and 39.11%, and 93.3% and 75.08%, respectively, in 2020 and 2021. With the application of calcium carbonate, the grain biomass of wheat first decreased and then increased. Additionally, the grain biomass significantly increased by 26.36% and 71.22%, respectively, at the 5% calcium carbonate application rate. Therefore, high application rates of pig manure (3% and 5%) have potential application in the safe production of wheat in Cd‐contaminated soils.

Abstract:Lead (Pb) contaminated in farmlands has become a deep threat to global food security and human health. In this study, the bioavailability of Pb in 18 types of soil to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grains were investigated, and reliable empirical models of Pb in wheat grains were established based on soil properties. The results showed that the average bioconcentration factor (BCFgrain/total-Pb) in acidic soils was approximately 3.30 times than that in alkaline soils (ANOVA P < 0.05). Significant positive relationships between wheat grain Pb concentration and soil total Pb or EDTA extractable Pb were presented through the results of simple linear regressions (P < 0.001). The stepwise multiple linear regression models indicated that soil pH and soil total Pb were determined to be the two most reliable and reasonable factors in predicting wheat grain Pb concentration, with 83.8% explanation of variation. Soil total Pb compared with EDTA extractable Pb was applied to better improve prediction models in describing Pb transfer from soils to wheat grains. Furthermore, grouped models divided into two parts with pH of 7.5 also generated well prediction in wheat grain Pb concentration. Our prediction models were successfully verified within 95% prediction intervals for published literature data (including other wheat varieties). Moreover, the results indicated that ungmuped models performed better in predicting accuracy within 400 mg kg(-1) of soil total Pb, and grouped models showed better extrapolation stability when Pb in soil were overly high. Our results in the study were conduce to evaluate food security of Pb in contaminated agricultural soils.
Uptake and Partition of Cd and Pb among Rice Genotypes in Contaminated Paddy Soil

Abstract:To test whether rice genotypes varied in response to heavy metal polluted soil,a field experiment was conducted by using 11 rice genotypes in a heavy metal contaminated paddy soil in Wenling,Zhejiang Province.Uptake and partitioning of Cd and Pb in the 11 rice genotypes were investigated.The concentrations of Cd and Pb in grain,leaf,stem and root of rice plants significantly varied among the 11 rice genotypes in this experiment.The concentration of Cd in brown rice of Xiushui09,Huanghuazhan,Xiuyou5 and Shaonuo9714 did not exceed the maximum permissible concentration(MPC)of heavy metals in the edible parts of crops(GB 2762—2005),while the concentration of Pb in brown rice of Qianyou8704 and Huanghuazhan did not exceed the MPC.The partitioning pattern of Cd and Pb in various parts of rice plants was similar among the genotypes.The distribution pattern of Cd concentration in various parts of rice plants was in the order of rootstemleaf and brown rice.For Pb,the pattern was in the order of rootleafstembrown rice.The data analysis showed that Cd concentration in brown rice,stem and root highly related to rice subspecies.Indica hybrid rice had highest Cd concentration in its brown rice,and then japonica hybrid and indica.The japonica rice had lowest Cd concentration in its brown rice.For Pb,however,only concentration in root showed to relate with rice subspecies.Results from this experiment also indicated a significant difference of heavy metal accumulation among various male sterile lines.This result suggested that using male sterile lines with low heavy-metal-uptake trait in hybrid breeding could be an important approach for food production safety in the metal contaminated paddy soil.
Response of Rice in Three Types of Soils to Cu, Pb and Cd with Single and Combined Pollution

Abstract:Pot experiments were carried out to study the effects of Cu, Pb and Cd with single and combined forms in three different types of soils on yield and heavy metals accumulation of rice (Oryza sativa L.). The results showed that, in the red soil, compared with the treatment of Pb 400 mg·kg-1 soil or Cd 1 mg·kg-1 soil, Cu of 100 mg·kg-1 soil was more toxic to the rice growth. The rice yield decreased significantly, while the coexistence of Pb aggravated the toxicity of Cu, the coexistence of Cu-Cd, Pb-Cd and Cu-Pb-Cd significantly increased the rice Cd concentration by 135%, 84% and 126% respectively, compared to the CK. The interaction effect of coexistent metals on rice Pb concentration was not significant; however, the rice Pb in all the Pb treatments exceeded the Food Hygiene Standards in China (0.4 mg·kg-1). In the paddy soil, the combined effects of Cu with Pb and Cd on the yield of rice in other two paddy soils were less significant than those in the red soil, the rice Pb and Cd concentrations in the Cu-Pb-Cd treatment increased by 141% and 360% compared with the Pb or Cd treatment alone. In Wushan soil, the existence of Cu or Pb and Cd did not significantly increase the rice Cd concentration. The toxicity of Cu, Pb and Cd to rice in three type soils was red soils>paddy soil>Wushan soil. The concentrations of Cu, Pb and Cd in the soils extracted by 1.0 mol·L-1 NH4OAc showed good correlation with their concentrations in the rice.

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) contamination of farmland soils leads to Cd accumulation in crops and reduced micronutrient uptake, posing grave risks to food safety. Herein, we investigated the enrichment and transportation patterns of Cd and trace elements in different parts of six wheat genotypes grown in weakly alkaline Cd-contaminated soils via pot experiments. The results revealed that the wheat grain variety with high Cd accumulation (Ningmai13) demonstrated a 1.94-fold increase compared to the variety with low accumulation (Yanong0428). The transfer factor of Cd from wheat straw to grain ranged from 0.319 to 0.761, while the transfer factor of Cd from root to straw ranged from 0.167 to 0.461. Furthermore, the concentrations of other metals in wheat grains followed the order of Zn > Mn > Fe > Cu. There was a significant positive correlation between Cd and Mn in grains, indicating a potential synergistic effect. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the regulation of micronutrient intake to modulate Cd uptake in wheat.
Plant Growth,Lead Uptake and Partitioning of Maize(Zea Mays L.) under Simulated Mild/ Moderate Lead Pollution Stress

Abstract:Mild/moderately polluted soil accounts for about 87 percent of all heavy metal contaminated soil area in China. To a better utilization of these mild/moderately polluted soil,the most important approach might include phytoremediation which was based on deep understanding of the uptake,translocation and partitioning of heavy metal in various plants and genotypes. The experiment was conducted to compare the crop growth,lead uptake and partitioning of six genotypes of maize(Zea mays L.) under artificial simulating moderate(800 mg·kg-1 Pb),mild(400 mg·kg-1 Pb) and no-pollutant-addition conditions in greenhouse. The results showed that significant difference(P0.01) in plant growth,lead absorption and partitioning of absorbed lead were found among six different genotypes of maize under both moderate and mild lead pollution stress.Under mild lead pollution(Pb400),the growth of all maize genotypes tested were significantly promoted.The waxy genotypes among the six genotyped showed the biggest biomass at moderate pollution level(Pb800). Compared to the no-addition control,Shentian-1 showed a significant increase in biomass,implying its strong tolerance to lead contamination stress.The lead accumulated in maize increased along with lead pollution stress.Lead accumulated in various organs of maize showed as:rootleaf culmear. The Genotypes Yedan-13 and Shentian-1 performed higher lead uptake capacity with different partitioning characteristics that Yedan No.-13 accumulated more lead in its edible part while Shentian-1 accumulated most of absorbed lead in its belowground part than that in ear.Yedan-13 had a lead transportation factor(TF) of 0.662 8,while Shentian-1 had a lead bioconcentration factor(BCF) of 0.026 4. These indicated that both genotypes have higher uptake and accumulating ability,implying that those two genotypes of maize could be potentially used as high accumulating plants for lead-contaminated soil restoration.The lead concentration in edible part of two sweet baby corn genotypes(cv. Jinzhumichaotian and cv. Shentian No.1) was within the limitation of state's food safety requirements.

Abstract:Whether plant coexistence can reduce the impacts of lead (Pb) on crops in agroecosystems has not been well understood. We conducted a factorial experiment to investigate the effects of weeds coexisting with maize (Zea mays L.) on Pb accumulation in maize and soil microbes at two Pb levels (ambient and 300 mg/kg). Elevated Pb tended to increase the Pb concentration in maize and decreased soil microbial activity (indicated by the average well color development, AWCD), functional group diversity, as well as arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) colonization and vesicle number of maize. Compared to the monoculture, weeds coexisting with maize reduced the Pb concentrations in the root, leaf, sheath and stem of maize at both seedling and mature stages. In maize-weed mixtures, soil microbial activity and functional group diversity tended to increase for both Pb treatments relative to the monoculture. Furthermore, principal component analysis revealed that the soil microbial community structure changed with the introduction of weeds. The highest Pb accumulation in weeds occurred for the elevated Pb treatment in a three species mixture. The results suggest that multiple plant species coexistence could reduce lead accumulation in crop plants and alleviate the negative impacts on soil microbes in polluted land, thereby highlighting the significance of plant diversity in agroecosystems.
Effects of biochars combined with ferrous sulfate and pig manure on the bioavailability of Cd and potential phytotoxicity for wheat in an alkaline contaminated soil

Abstract:Reducing the content of Cd in wheat grains is necessary for human health, especially in alkaline farmland in northern China where a large area of soils is heavily polluted with Cd. A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of wheat straw biochar (WB) and maize straw biochar (MB) combined solely with ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) or combined with FeSO4 and pig manure (PFWB and PFMB) on Cd bioavailability in soil and the phytotoxicity of Cd in wheat in an alkaline contaminated soil. The results showed that the application of these treatments decreased the concentrations of CaCl2-extractable Cd by 32.8-60.5% and increased the soil organic matter by 36.8-106.7% compared with those of the control treatment. The acid-soluble fraction of Cd was decreased by 3.7-16.8% but the residual fraction was increased by 1.7-13.7%. Furthermore, the addition of WB and MB increased the soil pH by 0.29 and 0.16 units, respectively, while the other treatments decreased the soil pH by 0.16-0.37 units. The concentrations of Cd in different wheat tissues were decreased in amended soils, and these decreases were positively correlated with CaCl2-extractable Cd and the acid-soluble fraction of Cd. The ability to accumulate Cd was in the order of root>straw>grain. In addition, there was a downward trend in the bio-concentration and translocation factors under different amendments. The amendments of PFWB and PFMB had better efficiency in the immobilization of Cd in soil and the inhibition of Cd uptake of wheat than WB and MB. In addition, the treatments of PFWB and PFMB increased the wheat yield by 14.3-16.2%, and thus have a great application prospect based on the cost-benefit analysis.
MoCA cutoff score in relation to the functional assessment of seniors living in a rural Canadian community.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION Research suggests that the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) normal cutoff score of 26 may not be appropriate for all populations and ages. We sought to determine an appropriate MoCA cutoff score for community-dwelling seniors living in a rural Canadian community. METHODS We conducted a retrospective chart review at a health centre in rural northern Ontario. The sample included community-dwelling seniors presenting between Dec. 1, 2013, and July 31, 2015. We generated a receiver operating characteristic curve to evaluate MoCA cutoff scores in relation to functional assessment, using the dichotomous categories of "no deficiencies in activities of daily living/instrumental activities of daily living (ADL/IADL) and "deficiencies in ADL/IADL." RESULTS A total of 95 charts were included in the chart review. We identified MoCA scores of 20 (sensitivity 85%, specificity 62%) and 21 (sensitivity 77%, specificity 77%) as cutoff scores for the identification of impairment in this rural population. CONCLUSION Our results suggest the normal range in MoCA score for the community-dwelling rural senior to be between 22 and 30. Although the MoCA demonstrated satisfactory performance as a screening measure, the importance of including ADL and IADL functional assessments before making clinical decisions cannot be overemphasized.

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) pollution in cultivated soils has posed a great risk to human health through the soil-plant-human pathway. Therefore, it is important to derive soil thresholds for the low-Cd accumulating genotype of wheat (Triticum aestivum L) to promote its application in agricultural production on Cd-contaminated sites. Here, a pot experiment was performed to explore the transfer characteristics of Cd in two contrasting wheat genotypes at three different soils and the effect of soil parameters together with soil safety Cd thresholds derivation. Generally, grain Cd highly accumulating wheat genotype (Zhenmai10, HT) showed higher Cd accumulation in grains than grain Cd weakly accumulating wheat genotype (Aikang58, LT). Stepwise multiple linear regression (SMLR) analysis (log-transformed Freundlich-type) indicated that Cd accumulation in wheat grains was strongly related to soil total Cd concentration and pH for both genotypes (R2 = 0.907*** for HT; R2 = 0.910*** for LT). Combining the simple regression model of soil-plant transfer system with the risk assessment method based on human health, soil total Cd thresholds for three soils were calculated with the values of 0.62, 0.82, and 0.62 mg kg-1 in LT genotype and 0.31, 0.77, and 0.49 mg kg-1 in HT genotype. Therefore, we suggested that when deducing soil thresholds, the ability of wheat genotypes to accumulate Cd and soil properties should be considered because of the large differences in soil thresholds between different genotypes and types of soils. We believe our results will promote the application of low-Cd wheat genotypes to agricultural production, thereby ensuring the safety of their products.

Abstract:John Haldane suggests two fresh ways in which modern scholars might engage with medieval thinkers. Where the goal of historical research is to understand ‘medieval thinkers, just as one might figures and ideas from other periods of the history of philosophy’, one may transcend the potential closure of history through comparative or practising research. The goal of comparative research is to explore parallels between ‘medieval and contemporary theories [...] in the hope of illuminating both sides of the comparison’; the goal of practising research is to ‘carry on philosophising in the general tradition of the scholastics’. In this comparative (and rather experimental) article, I first explore the important role which Alasdair MacIntyre assigns to Dante in his influential account of modern ethical theory and practice, an account which includes the provocative assertion that ‘moral enquiry can only extend itself by drawing upon Aquinas and upon Dante’. I critique two major claims which MacIntyre makes about Dante, and argue that Dante will not fit into the philosophical-historical genealogy which MacIntyre’s project outlines. In the second part, I attempt a comparison in the opposite direction. Instead of trying to draw out from Dante’s work what might be useful in supporting a contemporary philosophical standpoint (such as MacIntyre’s), I explore what might happen if we were to ask Dante to read us moderns. Leaving aside the incalculable historical, cultural and aesthetic value of Dante’s poem, may it speak philosophically only to those with essentially Christian-Aristotelian commitments? Or is there, in addition, a place in Dante’s poem for a philosophical attitude that might approximate to the secular materialism characteristic of modernity? I suggest that Dante’s nuanced treatment of Epicureanism may offer just such a prophetic analogue.

Abstract:Root activities, i.e. the release of proton, exudate of sugar, were related to the contents of Pb, Cd. The pH in the growth medium increased with the increasing concentration of Pb, and decreased with the increasing concentration of Cd in solution. The quantity of sugar exudate increased with Pb, Cd increase and was affected distinctively by Pb-Cd interaction. The changes in the distribution patterns of Cd and Pb were also studied using an electron probe X-ray microanalyzer. The content of Cd was lower in the stelbe than that in the cortex.
Soil properties drive the bacterial community to cadmium contamination in the rhizosphere of two contrasting wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) bioavailability in the rhizosphere makes an important difference in grain Cd accumulation in wheat. Here, pot experiments combined with 16S rRNA gene sequencing were conducted to compare the Cd bioavailability and bacterial community in the rhizosphere of two wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes, a low-Cd-accumulating genotype in grains (LT) and a high-Cd-accumulating genotype in grains (HT), grown on four different soils with Cd contamination. Results showed that there was non-significant difference in total Cd concentration among four soils. However, except for black soil, DTPA-Cd concentrations in HT rhizospheres were higher than those of LT in fluvisol, paddy soil and purple soil. Results of 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed that soil type (52.7%) was the strongest determinant of root-associated community, while there were still some differences in rhizosphere bacterial community composition between two wheat genotypes. Taxa specifically colonized in HT rhizosphere (Acidobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, Bacteroidetes and Deltaproteobacteria) could participate in metal activation, whereas LT rhizosphere was highly enriched by plant growth-promoting taxa. In addition, PICRUSt2 analysis also predicted high relative abundances of imputed functional profiles related to membrane transport and amino acid metabolism in HT rhizosphere. These results revealed that the rhizosphere bacterial community may be an important factor regulating Cd uptake and accumulation in wheat and indicated that the high Cd-accumulating cultivar might improve Cd bioavailability in the rhizosphere by recruiting taxa related to Cd activation, thus promoting Cd uptake and accumulation.

Abstract:In order to understand the effect of soil properties on bio-availability of the metals added in soil, 16 paddy soils with diverse properties were collected, and treated with different rates of Cd (0,0.2,0.5,1,2,and 5 mg?kg-1) or Pb(0,20,50,100,200,and 500 mg?kg-1). After one-year incubation, the treated soils were analyzed for water-soluble and exchangeable Cd and Pb. The results show that water-soluble and exchangeable Cd and Pb in the soils increased with increasing loads of Cd and Pb in the soils. However, the increase extent of water-soluble and exchangeable Cd and Pb in the incubated soils varied among the soils. Correlation analysis indicated that soil water-soluble Cd and Pb were mainly correlated with total Cd and Pb, and pH, while soil exchangeable Cd and Pb were mainly correlated with total Cd and Pb, and pH, CEC, and texture of the soils. The soil with high pH and clay content had strong capacity to buffer Cd and Pb pollution. The results suggested that total concentration of Cd and Pb in contaminated soil could not be well used to evaluate the bioavailability of the metals.

Abstract:In order to identify the effects of soil properties on the transfer of Cd from soil to wheat under actual field conditions, 126 pairs of topsoil and wheat samples were collected from the Yangtze River delta region, China. Relevant parameters (Cd, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, N, P, K, S, pH, total organic carbon, and speciation of soil Cd) in soil and wheat tissues were analyzed, and the results were treated by statistical methods. Soil samples (19.8%) and 14.3% of the wheat grain samples exceeded the relevant maximum permissible Cd concentrations in China for agricultural soil and wheat grain, respectively. The major speciations of Cd in soil were exchangeable, bound to carbonates and fulvic and humic acid fraction, and they were readily affected by soil pH, total Ca, Mg, S and P, DTPA-Fe, Ex-Ca, and Ex-Mg. Cadmium showed a strong correlation with Fe, S, and P present in the grain and the soil, whereas there was no significant correlation in the straw or root. Generally, soil pH, Ca, Mg, Mn, P, and slowly available K restricted Cd transfer from soil to wheat, whereas soil S, N, Zn, DTPA-Fe, and total organic carbon enhance Cd uptake by wheat.
Zinc-Cadmium Interaction in Soil-Plant Systems Under Different Soil Properties and Phosphorus Levels

Abstract:To investigate the effects of soil properties and phosphorus(P)levels on zinc(Zn)-cadmium(Cd)interaction in soil-plant systems,two pot experiments were conducted.The soil used in experiment 1 was fertile clay with high levels of Zn and P,while,the soil in experiment 2 was arid sandy soil deficient of Zn and P.The results showed that,in experiment 1,addition of Zn(2~100 mg·kg-1)to soil had no significant effects on Cd concentrations in wheat(Triticum aestivum,L.)seedlings grown in Zn-affluent soils,and only when the added Zn was up to severe contamination,Cd uptake by wheat was inhibited significantly.In experiment 2,however,even low levels of Zn addition(1~10 mg·kg-1)had significant effects on Cd uptake by wheat(P<0.001).Addition of reagent pure P(CaHPO4)also had significant effects on Cd concentrations in shoots and roots of plants.In the past,it was generally ascribed to Cd impurity in P fertilizer that P fertilizer increased the absorption of Cd in wheat,but according to the above results,we suggested that P element itself had effects on Cd uptake by plants and Cd transfer from root to shoot.
Growth and Uptake of Pb,Cd and As of Rice in Polluted Soils

Abstract:Pot experiments were conducted to study the effects of Pb, Cd and As in single and combined forms in three different kinds of soils on the yield of and accumulation of heavy metals in rice (Oryza sativa L.). The results showed that, in the red soil, As treatment decreased rice yield significantly, except Cd treatment which showed little affect on rice yield other treatments decreased rice yields significantly, while the coexistence of Pb or Cd aggravated the toxicity of As, whereas, the combined effect of Pb-Cd-As on rice yield in other two soils was less significant than that in the red soil. But straw yields were different between the treatment Pb, Pb-Cd-As and the control (CK). In Wushan soils, only the treatment of As and Pb-Cd-As decreased rice yields compared with CK, and the combined treatments reduced straw yields. In the red soil, rice Cd concentrations of the treatments of Cd-As, Pb-Cd and Pb-Cd-As decreased by 15.7%, 11.5% and 25.6% compared with single Cd treatment, respectively. Pb treatment increased significantly rice Pb concentration in red soil, but Pb-As treatment decreased it. The concentrations of heavy metals in rice were in the following order as red soil Qingzi soil Wushan soil.

Abstract:Using accumulators for intercropping in agricultural production can change the heavy metal concentration in the target plants. This study aims to investigate how intercropping wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and Solanum nigrum L. affects soil bacterial community and cadmium (Cd) absorption in response to Cd-contaminated soil. We compared the concentrations and accumulations of Cd by plants, the activities of soil enzymes and the bacterial community structures of rhizosphere soil in monoculture and intercropping system. Principal component analysis (PCA) ordinations showed that soil bacterial communities were significantly separated by MW and IW, which illustrated intercropping with Solanum nigrum L. impacted the bacterial community structure of wheat. Firstly, the results showed that the biomass of shoots and roots in intercropped wheat (IW) were significantly decreased by 16.19% and 29.38% compared with monoculture wheat (MW) after 60 days after transplanting (DAT). Secondly, the Cd concentration and accumulation of shoots in IW was higher than MW. The Cd accumulation of IW shoots and roots were increased 12.87% and 0.98%, respectively after 60 days DAT. Besides, the enzymes activity [catalase (CAT), urease (UA) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP)] of IW were decreased 35%, 6% and 21%, respectively after 60 days DAT. Finally, the diversity indexes [Abundance-based Coverage Estimator (ACE), Chao and InvSimpson] of IW were lower than MW. These results indicated that intercropping with Solanum nigrum L. inhibited the wheat growth and decreased the bacterial community diversity in wheat rhizosphere, increased the Cd concentration and accumulation in plant tissues of wheat. Therefore, intercropping Solanum nigrum L. and wheat with Cd-contaminated soil might increase the risk of excessive Cd in wheat.

Abstract:Higher concentrations of Pb and Cd in wheat grains harvested in several lead-smelting-polluted areas in northern China have been reported. This field experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of phosphate amendment and Zn foliar application on the accumulation of Pb and Cd in wheat grains grown in a lead-smelting impacted area in Jiyuan in northern China. The soil (total Pb and Cd are 261 and 2.65 mg kg−1, respectively) was amended with superphosphate at P:Pb ratios (mol:mol) of 1.90 or 2.57 either during wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) planting or a split of 60% of the phosphate applied at planting, with remaining 40% applied at the jointing stage. Zn was sprayed on the canopy of the wheat plants at the jointing stage. The phosphate amendment resulted in lower DTPA (diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid)-extractable Pb (1.39–10.7% lower than the control) and Cd (0.040–7.12%) in the soil. No significant effect of split application of phosphate was found on Pb and Cd availability in soil; however, higher rates of P resulted in lower Pb and Cd availabilities in the soil. Grain Pb (5.41–21.5% lower than the control), Cd (3.62–6.76%), and Zn (4.29–9.02%) concentrations were negatively affected by the phosphate application, with higher rates of phosphate resulting in lower grain heavy metal concentrations. Foliar application had no statistically significant influence on Pb and Cd concentrations in the grain (p > 0.05). Although Pb and Cd concentrations in wheat grains were reduced by the phosphate application, their concentrations were still much higher than the maximum permissible concentrations for wheat in the national standards of China. The results suggest that it is feasible to reduce wheat grain concentrations of Pb and Cd in Pb-smelting-polluted areas in northern China by soil application of superphosphate; however, the split application of the phosphate and the foliar application of Zn compounds do not have substantial impact on reducing accumulation of Pb and Cd in the wheat grains.
