Abstract:In an atom, the interaction of a bound electron with the vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field leads to complex shifts in the energy levels of the electron, with the real part of the shift corresponding to a shift in the energy level and the imaginary part to the width of the energy level. The most celebrated radiative shift is the Lamb shift between the $2S_{1/2}$ and the $2P_{1/2}$ levels of the hydrogen atom.~The measurement of this shift in 1947 by Willis Lamb Jr. proved that the prediction by Dirac theory that the energy levels were degenerate was incorrect. Hans~Bethe's calculation of the shift demonstrated the renormalization process required to deal with the divergences plaguing the existing theories and led to the understanding that it was essential for theory to include interactions with the zero-point quantum vacuum field. This was the birth of modern quantum electrodynamics (QED). Other calculations of the Lamb shift followed by Welton and Power in an effort to clarify the physical mechanisms leading to the shift. We have done a calculation of the shift using a group theoretical approach which gives the shift as an integral over frequency of a function, which we call the spectral density of the shift. The spectral density reveals how different frequencies contribute to the total energy shift. We find, for example, that half the radiative shift for the ground state 1S level in H comes from photon energies below 9700 eV, and that the expressions by Power and Welton do not have the correct low frequency behavior, although they do give approximately the correct value for the total shift.

Simplified partial wave expansion of the Lamb shift

Abstract:A method for calculating the self energy part of the Lamb shift is revisited. When the electron propagator in an external field is represented as an expansion in partial waves, the original method converges relatively slowly, requiring the calculation of dozens of partial waves. Here we show an improved method in which accurate results can be obtained using a much smaller number of partial waves. The method is illustrated for the ground states of hydrogenlike and lithiumlike boron, and the possibility of high accuracy calculations on lower Z hydrogenic ions is discussed.

Abstract:Based on the precision experimental data of energy-level differences in hydrogenlike atoms, especially the 1S-2S transition of hydrogen and deuterium, the necessity of establishing a reduced Dirac equation (RDE) with reduced mass as the substitution of original electron mass is stressed. The theoretical basis of RDE lies on two symmetries, the invariance under the space-time inversion and that under the pure space inversion. Based on RDE and within the framework of quantum electrodynamics in covariant form, the Lamb shift can be evaluated (at one-loop level) as the radiative correction on a bound electron staying in an off-mass-shell state--a new approach eliminating the infrared divergence. Hence the whole calculation, though with limited accuracy, is simplified, getting rid of all divergences and free of ambiguity.

Abstract:We study, by separately calculating the contributions of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction to the atomic energy level shift, the Lamb shift of a static two-level atom interacting with real massless scalar fields in the Boulware, Unruh and Hartle-Hawking vacuums outside a Schwarzschild black hole. We find that in the Boulware vacuum, the Lamb shift gets a correction arising as a result of the backscattering of vacuum field modes off the space-time curvature, which is reminiscent of the correction to the Lamb shift induced by the presence of cavities. However, when the Unruh and Hartle-Hawking vacua are concerned, our results show that the Lamb shift behaves as if the atom were irradiated by a thermal radiation or immersed in a thermal bath at the Hawking temperature, depending on whether the scalar field is in the Unruh or the Hartle-Hawking vacuum. Remarkably, the thermal radiation is always backscattered by the space-time geometry.

Abstract:In this work, quantization of electromagnetic fields in a general anisotropic inhomogeneous media is considered. First, the classical Hamiltonian is derived. Once the Hamiltonian is derived, with it the classical equations of motion follow. Next, the fields are elevated to become quantum operators, for which conjugate pairs are endowed with commutators. Since as previously shown, such commutators induce functional derivatives, the quantum equations of motion can be easily derived. Next, the mode decomposition of the fields is demonstrated. Upon substitution into the classical Hamiltonian, each mode then behaves like a simple harmonic oscillator. These oscillators can then be elevated to become quantum harmonic oscillators. Both the traveling wave modes and the standing wave modes are discussed. Furthermore, the longitudinal modes are described. Finally, the case of impressed sources are considered, with the corresponding Hamiltonian and field quantization. The Green's functions for the linear system are presented. Finally, the quantum Maxwell's equations are derived. A short discussion on field-atom interaction is given.

Abstract:The influence of the modification of the free vacuum on the quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects, as well as the Lamb (energy) shift of a multilevel atom, is studied. A unitary transformation method has been used to include the counter-rotating terms and to obtain the ground state of the whole Hamiltonian. The anti-Zeno effect is recovered if the modified density of states (DOS) has a dip near the transition frequency. The modification of DOS by a dip or a peak will change the Lamb shift compared with that in the free vacuum. Together with our unitary transformation method, there are three different methods to obtain the change in the Lamb shift. Using our method we investigate the change in the Lamb shift and obtain a formula for the change, which is the same as obtained with the method of Louisell [Quantum Statistical Properties of Radiation (Wiley, New York, 1973)] but different from the method of Cohen-Tannoudji [Atom-Photon Interactions: Basic Processes and Applications (Wiley, New York, 1992), pp. 317 and 417]. The correctness of the Lamb shift formulas obtained by the three methods can be easily testified experimentally.

Abstract:The time evolution of the Lamb shift that accompanies the real photon emission is studied for the first time (to our knowledge). The investigation of the explicit time dependence of the Lamb shift becomes possible because the self-energy of the free electron, which is divergent, is subtracted from the Hamiltonian after a unitary transformation. The Lamb shift can then be separated into two parts: one is the time-independent shift due to the virtual photon exchange, and the other is the time-dependent shift due to the real photon emission. The time evolution depends on the nature of the coupling spectrum of the reservoir.

Abstract:Quantization of the electromagnetic field (called quantum electromagnetics here) has been a fascinating and important subject since its introduction by Dirac in 1927. However, this knowledge is often inaccessible to technologists such as engineers. This subject will be discussed in its simplest terms so that it can be easily understood by a larger community of researchers. To this end, a new way of motivating Hamiltonian mechanics is presented. Furthermore, a novel way of deriving the quantum equations of motion for electromagnetics and Maxwell's equations is presented.

Abstract:In the literature of calculating atomic and molecular structures, most Schrodinger equations are described by Coulomb potential. However, there are also a few literatures that discuss some magnetic correction methods, such as Pauli and Shortley's early work. But in fact, the calculation accuracy of these Schrodinger equations is not consistent with Lamb shift. Therefore, in the traditional ab initio calculation of quantum mechanics, it is common and necessary to use Dirac theory or quantum electrodynamics (QED) to correct the energy level of Schrodinger equation. However, the calculation of Feynman diagram is a daunting problem, including the application of self-consistent field in relativity and density functional theory. So recently, we have noticed the simplicity of the modified Newtonian mechanics, and we think that quantum mechanics will have similar properties. Here, we state this and improve the correction function in our previous action potential. In addition, through the demonstration of hydrogen-like and helium-like systems here, it can be proved that this conclusion is a potential application, that is, the energy level structure of our modified Schrodinger equation is consistent with Lamb shift.

Abstract:A simple but effective method for regularization-renormalization (R-R) is proposed for handling the Feynman diagram integral (FDI) at one loop level in quantum electrodynamics (QED). The divergence is substituted by some constants to be fixed via experiments. So no counter term, no bare parameter and no arbitrary running mass scale is involved. Then the Lamb Shift in Hydrogen atom can be calculated qualitatively and simply as $\Delta E(2S_{1/2})- \Delta E(2P_{1/2})=996.7 MHz$ versus the experimental value $1057.85 MHz$.

Abstract:Radiative corrections which remove accidental degeneracy in the spectrum of the relativistic hydrogen atom and lead to the modification of the Coulomb law, are calculated within the novel approach, based on the exact solution of the Dirac equation with the Coulomb potential. The energy spectrum of the hydrogen atom is obtained with account of these corrections and the Lamb shift is calculated for the lowest energy states.

Abstract:A comprehensive theory of the Lamb shift in light muonic atoms such as μH , μD , μ3He+ , and μ4He+ is presented, with all quantum electrodynamic corrections included at the precision level constrained by the uncertainty of nuclear structure effects. This analysis can be used in the global adjustment of fundamental constants and in the determination of nuclear charge radii. Abstract:A unitary transformation approach is used to study the energy level shift of the atom coupled to both a vacuum electromagnetic field and a driving laser. The Lamb shift of the energy levels is shown to depend on the Rabi frequency and the detuning of the driving laser, which couples another pair of levels.

Abstract:Hybrid quantum systems consisting of an ensemble of two--level systems interacting with a single--mode electromagnetic field are important for the development of quantum information processors and other quantum devices. These systems are characterized by the set of energy level hybridizations, split by collective Lamb shifts, that occur when the ensemble and field mode interact coherently with high cooperativity. Computing the full set of Lamb shifts is generally intractable given the high dimensionality of many devices. In this work, we present a set of techniques that allow a compact description of the Lamb shift statistics across all collective angular momentum subspaces of the ensemble without using restrictive approximations on the state space. We use these techniques to both analyze the Lamb shift in all subspaces and excitation manifolds and to describe the average observed Lamb shift weighted over the degeneracies of all subspaces.

Abstract:Theoretical energy levels of the $n = 1$ and $n = 2$ states of hydrogenlike atoms with the nuclear charge numbers $1 \le Z \le 110$ are tabulated. The tabulation is based on ab initio quantum electrodynamical calculations performed to all orders in the nuclear binding strength parameter $Z\alpha$, where $\alpha$ is the fine structure constant. Theoretical errors due to various effects are critically examined and estimated.

Abstract:Leading logarithmic corrections to the difference of Lamb shifts of s-states $E_L(1s)-8E_L(2s)$ and to the life time of $2p_{1/2}$ state are considered. The result of Sokolov and Yakovlev for the Lamb splitting of $2s_{1/2}$ and $2p_{1/2}$ is re-evaluated and our new value is <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1057.8576" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1057.8576">1057.8576</a>(21) MHz. Using value of $E_L(1s)-8E_L(2s)=$ -187.237(8) MHz, obtained here, a new value of the Hydrogen and Deuterium ground states using all recent measurements connected with 1s or 2s Lamb shifts. The highest precision value for the Hydrogen ground state is obtained from corrected result of Sokolov and Yakovlev experiment as 8172.934(22) MHz. The Deuterium result is $E_L(1s)-8E_L(2s)=$ -187.229(8) MHz, using it we obtain from the Garching experiment 8183.905(224) MHz. Some related topics are also considered. Taking into account nearest future result the fine structure constant problem are reviewed. Special attention is payed to Muonium hyperfine splitting, which it is done simillar to Lamb shift calculatuion for and to the neutron de Broglie's wave length measurements which also could lead to some connection between the Deuterium mass and the fine structure constant.

Abstract:The Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonian of a light atomic system that has an m alpha(8) contribution to energy levels is calculated. The case of a Dirac Coulomb field is discussed. The results can be used for relativistic and radiative corrections to energy levels in the low-energy part. A divergent operator delta(2)(r) emerges. This is probably due to the nature of the point-like charge source. The effective method of radiation calculation may be re-checked.
