Abstract:Xiao Garden, a famous garden of Yangzhou in 18th century, was originally a nursery for Chinese herbaceous peony that had been famous since 10th century. The land of the nursery was bought by Chen Meng-xing, a secluded member of Imperial Academy in 1716. Chen transformed the nursery into a private garden for clan use. The private garden was then turned into one of the three famous places for literati' gathering in Yangzhou. In the middle of 18th century, the name of Xiao Garden was changed to ‘Xiao-yuan-hua-rui’. During that time, the garden was a key place along the landscape between Hong Bridge and Ping-shan Hall. The change of Xiao Garden from an economic nursery to an aesthetic private garden, such a process appears ubiquitous in the transformation of gardens of Jiang-nan. The rapid change from a private garden for clan to a scenic spot opening to city residents, however, occurred only in Yang-zhou of the middle of 18th century. How was a private garden built, transformed and integrated? What was transformed in its spatial structure? Whether the historical changes to Xiao Garden present any rules? Yet, the historical Xiao Garden no longer exists. This article integrates historical texts and pictorial records to represent the spatial structure of Xiao Garden in different periods. It hopes to identify the inherent rules of landscaping activities that transformed Xiao Garden.
On the Conflict Between Colonialism and Nationalism in Everyday Life ——from a Perspective of the Parks in Modern China

Abstract:Appearing with the Western colonialism in China, parks turned, otherwise a casual place in daily life, into a political space. In the beginning, Chinese people were barred out of the park gates, which caused the national collective memory about "Dogs and Chinese Not Admitted". What's more, the colonialist memorial buildings and monuments in the parks hurt the Chinese people's feeling of nationalism. Due to these, when building their own parks, the Chinese people gave priority to the national styles and educational function of parks. Thus, the whole space of parks is saturated with spirit of nationalism. Parks vividly reflect the China-West acculturation and the conflict between colonialism and nationalism in China's modernization within a particular modern historical period.

Compared with the four records of Northern Yang-zhou suburb, the research discovers that trips to scenic spots were transformed. Journeys based upon landmark buildings, such as Ping-shan-tang, were gradually replaced by those based upon site-seeing boats, and the latter were increasingly popular. Above findings indicate that in the 18th century, the representation, experience and perceptions of the landscape of Northern Yangzhou suburb were transformed from building-dominated to boat-dominated patterns. In turn, the boat-dominated pattern changed the physical form of the landscape and promoted the unique characters of `Yangzhou Yuan-ling' of the mid-Qing dynasty. In the 18th century, individual Jiang-Nan private gardens gradually merged under the influences brought by new ways of travel. In such a transformation of Jiang-Nan gardens, Yangzhou was the cradle where public landscape formed, developed and opened to urban residents.

Abstract:In the late Qing Dynasty,being stimulated by the various factors geography was developing quickly.This paper presents a name list of 160 geographers in the Qing Dynasty,and suggests that the development of geography in the early and medium Qing Dynasty has laid a foundation for its modernization.It also makes a case study of some famous geographers such as Wei Yuan,Xu Jishe,Cao Tingjie,Zou Daijun and their achievements in world geography,geography of boarder area in China and cartology,etc..Furthermore,discussions are made concerning the rise of new geography's effects and influence in the modernization of sciences in China.

Abstract:AbstractChinese ways of organizing and exploiting landscape park areas, particularly those of historical importance are specific, due to the contemporary overexploitation of these sites. Historic landscape Park of Quin Shi Huang, contains the world-famous “Terracotta Army”. Such a tourist attraction demands organization of access and traffic on an archaeological site and throughout the immense landscape park. The administration of Panjin Park in the Liaoning Province acts to extend the tourist season beyond August/September, when Suaeda Salsa is in bloom and the “Red Beach” attracts millions of visitors. The ideas of spreading tourist goals beyond icons of nature and history and directing them towards rural culture are the most challenging. Eco-farmsteads with animals and traditional crops from orchards, vegetable plots and fields are viewed as an attraction by people who never experienced village life. Research methods employed in the paper include on-site visits, review of literature, conference papers and related PhD dissertation.

Abstract:Rapid economic development has induced urbanization in China. Urbanization and deurbanization strategies co-exist in most of China's mountain regions. Urbanization typically occurs in famous scenic spots and in the vicinity of macro engineering works, while de-urbanization is implemented in large areas by the government to protect the natural environment. Over-urbanization has considerable impacts on the esthetic qualities of many mountain tourist resorts and sometimes even destroys the natural state of landscapes and ecosystems. Administrative gaps and omissions of the central government in managing the development of mountain parks and world heritage sites are responsible for over-urbanization in mountains. The search by local governments for short-term economic benefits is also a driving force of over-urbanization. The present article recommends that regulations and laws be developed to effectively assess and monitor the state of parks and world heritage sites in mountains. Institutions with sufficient authority must be set up to legally supervise and protect the natural state of parks and heritage sites in mountains, for the benefit of the Chinese people and the entire world.

Abstract:The emerging Chinese domestic and outbound tourism markets may be viewed as part of broader processes of historical change and development in China. Tourism is not a new stage in China's economic development, but is a renaissance and reinvigoration of established economic activity that has roots dating far back into history. History has influenced tourism growth in China in terms of both traveler motivations and destination choice. Literature has influenced perspectives of attractive destinations within China and the Chinese diaspora has influenced international travel. Abstract:The Ming and Qing Dynasty was the prosperous time of leisure culture development in ancient Beijing.The change of custom brought tremendous influence on leisure activities in Beijing.The folk in Beijing after Wanli during the Ming Dynasty pursured material enjoyment and pleasure.In the early and middle of the Qing Dynasty,the three hills and five gardens were constructed,teahouses,restaurants,assembly halls,temple fairs,landscape spots developed well,commercial theater began to appear.Because of the policy of dividing-rule for Han town and Man town,the western area of the outer city located in the forefront of the districts of Beijing in all kinds of leisure sites building.At the end of Qing Dynasty,Beijing opera formed,while gardens and other leisure sites were destroyed by foreign invaders.However,From the Sino-Japanese naval battle to the collapse of the Qing Dynasty,Beijing went into the development stage of absorbing western leisure culture.The park and Beijing Zoo were opened as public leisure space,which became an important historical events in the leisure development history of Beijing.

Abstract:During the Republic of China,great changes have taken place in Jiangnan cities and towns,including the modernization of industry in the city,the Westernization of lifestyle,the civilization of views and values,etc.For those cities and towns,they presented a complete picture of modernity in the respect of material culture and daily life.Shanghai,particularly,had been the center of the city agglomeration in Jiangnan delta,for its rapid development of the space and the standard of life,which not only shifted the former route of the development of the agglomeration oriented by Suzhou and Hangzhou,but further expanded the gap between cities in Jiangnan as well.So the development of Hangzhou and Suzhou both lagged behind Shanghai.Furthermore,Suzhou less developed than Hangzhou.More and more market towns,as developing and finalizing during the Republic of China,were less obvious in development trend of specialization,but more in homogenization,that is,they were transformed to comprehensive centers of economy,commodities,culture,leisure and transportation in the gradual process of administrativization.Amidst the process of construction,leisure industry had been a major orientation of development in those regions with rich historical and cultural resources.Different terms used by people then to express recreational tourism,such as"the regular travel","the group travel","excursion"and"sightseeing"could be seen in the newspaper all the time,which was able to reflect the veer of service function and people's needs.The bad health habits in cities and towns,however,were difficult to be changed quickly in the process of modernization.Such unhygienic custom,regarded as"normal state"or"normal practice",would influence the judgments of Chinese and foreign people towards the lifestyle in Jiangnan delta.

Abstract:The article analyzes the features of traditional Chinese landscape design and its impact on the landscape design of modern Chinese parks. The purpose of the article is to compare the historical gardens and modern parks of China in order to determine the continuity and at the same time the features of innovation. The main difference between historical gardens and modern parks is emphasized: historical gardens were aimed at creating a calm, serene atmosphere of contemplation of nature; modern parks often combine traditional landscape techniques and the function of entertainment. The main historical landscape techniques provided for the presence of a lake and artificial mountains as symbols of immortality, a constant change of views, contemplation of the landscape through the opening as a picture in a frame, the inclusion of a small garden in the large, partitioning the space with "green screens". Modern parks in China still inherit these techniques in general: they have reservoirs, a lot of greenery, park pavilions, but there are already views from distant points, the parks are surrounded by a wall of skyscrapers, entertaining attractions have appeared in them, and in the evenings they are illuminated with bright illumination. Despite their attractiveness and modernity, the atmosphere of the Chinese garden has changed from a secluded personal to a public character, as can be seen in the examples of modern parks in Xi'an and Hong Kong.

Abstract:Leisure and recreation occupy a conspicuous place in socialist state building. This paper depicts the conceptual evolution of park design in the West and the emergence and development of urban parks of culture and rest in the Soviet Union. It contends that the design philosophy of Soviet parks fit in the development of park design in a broader context despite its close relation to political demands. The Soviet theory of park design was modified when introduced into China in the early 1950s, on which basis three large urban parks were built, i.e. Taoranting Park, Zizhuyuan Park and Longtan Park. The paper examines the similarities and variations of the making of new parks in Beijing at the time with plausible reasons.

Abstract:As China actively pursues modernization, the tensions among a rigid application of socialism, the conservatism of tradition, and the demands of economic development threaten to destabilize the nation. All three elemental forces have contradictory objectives and the Chinese Communist Party expends significant effort in attempts to reconcile those differences. Tourism has emerged as an effective vehicle for synthesizing some of the differences through its contribution to the modernization process, its utilization of heritage for product development, and its role in meeting some socialist objectives. Tourism in China has thus exerted a centripetal influence, lessening to some extent tensions among the three opposing forces.

Abstract:The rapid development of parks and ecotourism in China has attracted worldwide attention, not only for the beauty of the landscape that the parks are protecting but also for their abundant and often unique biodiversity. However, in some areas, the development of ecotourism has actually led to the degradation of local ecological, economic, and social systems. Using National Forest Parks for demonstration, this article analyzes the current political, institutional, legal, environmental, and economic issues concerning National Parks in China, and examines their potential future development. Although the intention of National Park systems in China is to raise environmental quality, and to protect biodiversity and social livelihoods, their success has varied. Future success will be measured by their capacity to reduce poverty, to promote long-term rehabilitation of wildlife habitats, and to simultaneously protect Chinese culture and biodiversity.
