Abstract:The article analyzes the features of traditional Chinese landscape design and its impact on the landscape design of modern Chinese parks. The purpose of the article is to compare the historical gardens and modern parks of China in order to determine the continuity and at the same time the features of innovation. The main difference between historical gardens and modern parks is emphasized: historical gardens were aimed at creating a calm, serene atmosphere of contemplation of nature; modern parks often combine traditional landscape techniques and the function of entertainment. The main historical landscape techniques provided for the presence of a lake and artificial mountains as symbols of immortality, a constant change of views, contemplation of the landscape through the opening as a picture in a frame, the inclusion of a small garden in the large, partitioning the space with "green screens". Modern parks in China still inherit these techniques in general: they have reservoirs, a lot of greenery, park pavilions, but there are already views from distant points, the parks are surrounded by a wall of skyscrapers, entertaining attractions have appeared in them, and in the evenings they are illuminated with bright illumination. Despite their attractiveness and modernity, the atmosphere of the Chinese garden has changed from a secluded personal to a public character, as can be seen in the examples of modern parks in Xi'an and Hong Kong.

Abstract:Xiao Garden, a famous garden of Yangzhou in 18th century, was originally a nursery for Chinese herbaceous peony that had been famous since 10th century. The land of the nursery was bought by Chen Meng-xing, a secluded member of Imperial Academy in 1716. Chen transformed the nursery into a private garden for clan use. The private garden was then turned into one of the three famous places for literati' gathering in Yangzhou. In the middle of 18th century, the name of Xiao Garden was changed to ‘Xiao-yuan-hua-rui’. During that time, the garden was a key place along the landscape between Hong Bridge and Ping-shan Hall. The change of Xiao Garden from an economic nursery to an aesthetic private garden, such a process appears ubiquitous in the transformation of gardens of Jiang-nan. The rapid change from a private garden for clan to a scenic spot opening to city residents, however, occurred only in Yang-zhou of the middle of 18th century. How was a private garden built, transformed and integrated? What was transformed in its spatial structure? Whether the historical changes to Xiao Garden present any rules? Yet, the historical Xiao Garden no longer exists. This article integrates historical texts and pictorial records to represent the spatial structure of Xiao Garden in different periods. It hopes to identify the inherent rules of landscaping activities that transformed Xiao Garden.

Abstract:<span>Parks, gardens, and recreation areas play a vital role since they significantly improve the overall health of citizens, help meet people's needs for social interaction, and provide residents with safe outdoor activities in a green environment, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. China has a rich cultural heritage, namely, sustainable national reserves, parks, and gardens. Despite numerous studies dedicated to the sustainability of landscape architecture, there is a lack of research on sustainability approaches to Chinese landscape architecture, including the historical background. By way of the qualitative comparative analysis of several Chinese parks, the study revealed that Chinese traditional and modern landscape design and construction correspond to six sustainability approaches to landscape architecture: environment, economic, equity, aesthetics, experience, and ethics. The methods and results of the study can be applied by scientists to research sustainability approaches to landscape architecture in other countries and regions.</span>

Studies in the History of Gardens & Designed Landscapes

Abstract:Fangta Park in Shanghai is a widely admired Chinese modern park and a representative work by Professor Feng Jizhong. A literature review is first used to explain the construction process of Fangta Park, its design philosophy, master plan, and detailed design, followed by an analysis of the park's design. Previous studies have shown how Feng Jizhong 'deconstructed' Western architectural forms using traditional Chinese space concepts, thus generating novel Chinese architectural forms underpinned by Western construction concepts. He adapted rhetorical devices of Chinese traditional poetry and used them in the spatial arrangement and landscape design of Fangta Park, a modern landscape and architectural masterpiece with distinctive Chinese characteristics. Feng Jizhong promoted blending Chinese culture with modern landscape design and illustrated the process of 'space-time transformation' with 'conative space'. Through the design of Fangta Park, he exhibited his individuality and profound scholarship, charting a unique course for modern landscape architecture in China.

Abstract:AbstractChinese ways of organizing and exploiting landscape park areas, particularly those of historical importance are specific, due to the contemporary overexploitation of these sites. Historic landscape Park of Quin Shi Huang, contains the world-famous “Terracotta Army”. Such a tourist attraction demands organization of access and traffic on an archaeological site and throughout the immense landscape park. The administration of Panjin Park in the Liaoning Province acts to extend the tourist season beyond August/September, when Suaeda Salsa is in bloom and the “Red Beach” attracts millions of visitors. The ideas of spreading tourist goals beyond icons of nature and history and directing them towards rural culture are the most challenging. Eco-farmsteads with animals and traditional crops from orchards, vegetable plots and fields are viewed as an attraction by people who never experienced village life. Research methods employed in the paper include on-site visits, review of literature, conference papers and related PhD dissertation.

Abstract:The transition analysis and type division of landscape heritage are the effective management methods to achieve the overall conservation and targeted utilization of modern urban parks. In this study, Shenyang Zhongshan Park, the first modern urban park in Shenyang, was taken as the research object to explore the historical and cultural value of modern urban parks in Northeast China. The current status and transition characteristics of landscape heritage were analyzed, and the landscape heritage types were divided by their conservation and utilization evaluations. A total of 44 landscape heritages existed in Shenyang Zhongshan Park, including three categories, i.e., 15 historic sites, 20 cultural comprehensive sites, and 9 natural sites. Based on the IPA model, the landscape heritage was further divided into three subcategories, i.e., already designated for conservation (ADC), should be designated for conservation (SDC), and should be restricted scale (SRS). ADC was composed of one historic (Chiyoda water tower), two cultural comprehensive (water sources), and three natural (ancient trees) landscape heritages. SDC was a landscape heritage with long construction age, high importance, poor conservation, and high utilization, which can represent the cultural characteristics of the park and the need to speed up the improvement of its protection system. SRS weakened the cultural characteristics of the park. Its construction intensity should be reduced to highlight the core themes of the park (i.e., historical and cultural themes). In the future, modern urban parks should be conserved and utilized based on identifying different landscape heritage types. This study provides a theoretical basis for the management and development of modern urban parks from the perspective of conservation and utilization of landscape heritage.

Abstract:This study focuses on the emergence of the modern park system of the International Settlement in Shanghai in the early 20(th) century. Particular attention is given to the international context, in order to identify ideas that triggered the establishment of parks, playgrounds, minor parks and tree-lined streets locally. The intention of developing a park system commenced after the appointment of Kew gardeners to supervise the development of parks and open spaces from 1899. This study shows how a park system was guided by the idea of reducing greenspace inequality. Modern notions of park design, breathing spaces, the playground movement and the City Beautiful bore directly on the park system of the International Settlement. We conclude that the creation of the park system derived from the internationalisation of landscape planning and design in late 19(th) and early 20(th) centuries; the park system was a pioneer of its kind in modern China.

Abstract:Many parks have been built in China since the founding of PRC.While traditional Chinese garden buildings were simplified or transformed,new types of garden buildings emerged,leading to the emergence and development of China' s modern garden architecture.There have been two basic styles of modern garden architecture,namely modern style and vernacular-house style. They featured China' s garden buildings in the 1970s-80s.These modern garden buildings are valuable legacies of the history of modern China' s architecture and good references for today' s architectural design,although their significance hasn' t been well recognized.It is urgent to carry on the investigation on them today, when they are increasingly faced with the fate of being demolished.

Abstract:As a product of urbanization, urban park has become the main body of landscape architecture practice since 19th century, and is still the most important practice type for landscape architects today. In a unique urban area as CBD, how to create a comfortable green space is a professional field that still needs to be explored in the new times. The Modern Art Park in Beijing CBD Area is used as an example, from both planning and design aspects, to thoroughly explain the logical thinking process of the project from concept to realization, and advance the idea of exterior environment design as "base tone", trying to provide a new research thought for creating ideal urban space under special conditions.

The fundamental significance of the study of "modernity" is the transformation from traditional Chinese gardening to modern landscape architecture. Abstract:Rapid development and urbanization processes have had significant effects, including the shaping of sustainability practices focused on the urban level. Chinese cities have begun to pay attention to their rivers, and a large number of waterfront linear parks have been built in the riverside areas, so that the pu blic can easily enjoy their landscape and entertainment functions. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate how the urban issue is commonly associated with environmental, economic, and social development, and how it is from there that solutions to the crisis we are currently facing can be found and implemented. The rationale of this study Changsha landscape continues to maintain its core traditions by preserving their landscape design safe and current through the use of innovation that is strategically implemented to its physical through online infrastructure. The benefits and challenges facing the listing system in practice should be made clearer by analyzing the background, the used criteria, the accountable agencies, and the protective mechanisms. To comprehend the design, the attributes, and the current state of these structures, this study conducted a literature review using the systematic literature review (SLR) and a survey has been done. These findings will be useful in defining the objectives for future lists of historic buildings in Changsha, and when combined with research on previous lists, they may be significant in understanding the prospects for modern heritage conservation in Changsha City.

Abstract:Abstract Urban parks, as one of the starting points of urban green development, are a composite product of the interaction between people and nature. They play an important role in displaying and continuing the city’s culture. Therefore, it is critical to attach importance to the design and renewal of urban parks. This article takes Wuhan City Park as the specific research object, and extracts the “water”, “fish” and “bubble” in the “river culture” as landscape design elements. Abstract:This paper investigates the emergence of diversified landscapes in postreform China. The new urban forms are understood as a result of broader changes in the institutional and sociocultural spheres since reform. The commodification of housing provision on the supply side and the rise of a new rich and consumer culture on the demand side have together led to an ever-important role of place marketing in adding to the exchange values of land and buildings. Three projects in Shanghai are further studied in detail to illustrate what has been built and how they are built. It is revealed that, whatever the building style, the landscapes are manipulated to conjure up a certain type of good life by mixed-use packages and distinctive images. Furthermore, a new mode of publicprivate partnership favoring place marketing and holistic development strategies has also emerged. In comparison with other countries that have witnessed similar urban changes, an important process that China is experiencing is the commodification of urban space under globalization. But the dominant role of the state makes the case of China distinct. How market and global forces could shape the built environment still largely depends on the state's urban policies.
