Abstract:Filter pressure drop and filter trap efficiency are key parameters for evaluating filter's performance. A diesel engine bench for trapping diesel particle by filter was established. The influence of filter parameters on filter performance was investigated by engine bench testing. The results show that increase in filter length decreases the filter pressure drop, the initial filter trap efficiency increases slightly at first and then decreases sharply. Increase in filter porosity decreases the initial filter pressure drop and its increasing rate. Filter with lower porosity has higher filter trap efficiency in initial loading time, while during cake filtration the influence of porosity on filter trap efficiency is not obvious. From the experimental data, it can be seen that the characteristic of deposited particle layer structure is influenced by filtration velocity, the change rate of the product of particle layer thickness and particle layer specific resistance varies nonlinearly with filtration velocity.

Abstract:The use of different fuels will change the structural characteristics of the diesel engine exhaust particulates. This paper studies the impact of the particle physical and structural properties on DPF capture, and proposes to measure the particle deposition by particle chain length and particle layer thickness. This study builds a test bench based on a four-cylinder diesel engine, using F-T diesel fuel with 0%, 5%, and 15% methanol mixing ratio to collect particles after running for half an hour under the calibration condition. The physical properties of particles were analyzed by synchrotron radiation small angle scattering. The particle formation rate, friction between particles, particle size, and other parameters of mixed fuel combustion particles were then confirmed. The particle model was developed in EDEM based on the experimental data, and the creation of particle chains was studied. In addition, the impact of collision bounce on the particle deposition was taken into consideration to mimic the process of particle collision deposition on the filter wall. The results show that when the methanol mixing ratio increases, the Particles Number (PN) value of methanol F-T diesel combustion particles increases, the inter-particle friction increases, and the average particle size decreases. During the deposition process, the amount of deposition on the non-windward side of the DPF trap unit sharply increases, and the particle deposition efficiency increases with the increase of the deposition time. The particle deposition increases with the deposition time, and the thickness and length of the particle layer and chain increase with the increase of the particle number, friction, and size.

Abstract:In fundamental diesel particulate filter (DPF) research, carbon black surrogates like Printex U (PU) are often chosen for practicality, availability, cost-effectiveness, and safety; however, it is crucial to recognize their differences, and this study aims to fill this gap in the existing literature. Comparative findings reveal that diesel soot forms a denser soot-loaded substrate and soot cake, attributed to its smaller particle size, broader size distribution, and presence of soluble organic fractions. Conversely, PU carbon black-formed layers exhibit higher porosity, leading to reduced packing density and pressure drop, culminating in an earlier particle layer collapse during regeneration. Despite this, PU and PU-coated DPFs effectively replicate key characteristics of soot and soot-coated DPFs, as evidenced by their lower carbon content, increased oxygen content, reduced activation energy following thermal aging, and enhanced regeneration efficiency at lower soot loads and higher regeneration temperatures. Consequently, PU carbon black can be deemed a credible surrogate for real diesel soot in foundational DPF studies, furnishing valuable insights for optimizing DPF performance and diesel engine emission control. It is also noteworthy that PU is more suited as a surrogate for aged or dry soot rather than fresh soot, as the high concentrations of soluble organic fractions in the latter can significantly impact its oxidation characteristics and the regeneration performance of DPFs loaded with fresh soot.

Abstract:With the global emphasis on environmental protection and the proposal of the climate goal of "carbon neutrality," countries around the world are calling for reductions in carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and particulate matter pollution. These pollutants have severe impacts on human lives and should be effectively controlled. Engine exhaust is the most serious pollution source, and diesel engine is an important contributor to particulate matter. Diesel particulate filter (DPF) technology has proven to be an effective technology for soot control at the present and in the future. Firstly, the exacerbating effect of particulate matter on human infectious disease viruses is discussed. Then, the latest developments in the influence of key factors on DPF performance are reviewed at different observation scales (wall, channel, and entire filter). In addition, current soot catalytic oxidant schemes are presented in the review, and the significance of catalyst activity and soot oxidation kinetic models are highlighted. Finally, the areas that need further research are determined, which has important guiding significance for future research. Current catalytic technologies are focused on stable materials with high mobility of oxidizing substances and low cost. The challenge of DPF optimization design is to accurately calculate the balance between soot and ash load, DPF regeneration control strategy, and exhaust heat management strategy.

Abstract:Given the severe pollution caused by particulate matters in diesel engine exhaust, we discuss herein the problem of exhaust back-pressure and regeneration of commonly used diesel particulate filter treatment technology. This paper proposes a method based on water film adsorption to remove exhaust particles from exhaust gas. Particulates flowing through the purification device are adsorbed by the continuous isobaric water film formed on the wave adsorption plate. The formation process and characteristics of the equal pressure-differential water film are studied through combined theoretical analysis and experimental verification. The regeneration process and influencing factors of the purification system are also analyzed, and the treatment of the device is verified. Experiments show that the device offers a better purification of exhaust particulates with lower exhaust resistance and regeneration of the system during the treatment.

Abstract:Diesel engines offer higher fuel efficiency, but produce more exhaust particulate than conventional gasoline engines. Diesel particulate filters are presently the most efficient means to reduce these emissions. These filters typically trap particles in two basic modes: at the beginning of the exposure cycle the particles are captured in the filter holes, and at longer times the particles form a “cake” on which particles are trapped. Eventually the “cake” is removed by oxidation and the cycle is repeated. We have investigated the properties and behavior of two commonly used filters: silicon carbide (SiC) and cordierite (DuraTrap® RC) by exposing them to nearly-spherical ammonium sulfate particles. We show that the transition from deep bed filtration to “cake” filtration can easily be identified by recording the change in pressure across the filters as a function of exposure. We investigated the performance of these filters as a function of flow rate and particle size and found that the filters have the highest filtration efficiencies for particles smaller than ∼80nm and larger than ∼200nm. A comparison between the experimental data and a simulation using incompressible lattice-Boltzmann model shows good qualitative agreement, but the model over-predicts the filter's trapping efficiency.

Abstract:As countries around the world pay more attention to environmental protection, the corresponding emission regulations have become more stringent. Exhaust pollutants cause great harm to the environment and people, and diesel engines are one of the most important sources of pollution. Diesel particulate filter (DPF) technology has proven to be the most effective way to control and treat soot. In this paper, we review the latest research progress on DPF regeneration and ash. Passive regeneration, active regeneration, non-thermal plasma-assisted DPF regeneration and regeneration mechanism, DPF regeneration control assisted by engine management, and uncontrolled DPF regeneration and its control strategy are mainly introduced. In addition, the source, composition, and deposition of ash are described in detail, as well as the effect of ash on the DPF pressure drop and catalytic performance. Finally, the issues that need to be further addressed in DPF regeneration research are presented, along with challenges and future work in ash research. Over all, composite regeneration is still the mainstream regeneration method. The formation of ash is complex and there are still many unanswered questions that require further in-depth research.

Abstract:Based on a visualized filtration testing system for diesel particulate filter(DPF),the bulk density,permeability and porosity of particles deposited on DPF substrate piece were investigated under different filtration velocities.The experimental results show that under natural deposition condition or when the filtration velocity is less than 0.15m/s,the bulk density of soot presents to be about 90kg/m3;when the filtration velocity is less than 0.15m/s,the bulk densities of diesel particulate matter from ZS1100 and DK4A engines are both larger than that of soot,presenting to be about 100kg/m3.With the increase of filtration velocity,with the decrease of particle size and the increase of SOF content,the bulk density of particle increases rapidly at first,then gradually up to a steady value.With the increase of particle layer thickness,the pressure drop curve presentes to be varied with typical three stages under the same filtration velocity.With the increase of filtration velocity,the permeability and porosity of particle layer decreases rapidly at first,then gradually down to a steady value.
Investigation of Adsorption Characteristics and Influencing Factors for Diesel Engine Exhaust Particles

Abstract:Abstract The adsorption process of diesel exhaust particles has a great influence on the particles. A single-cylinder diesel exhaust particle collection system was established to collect particle samples with different adsorption environment conditions, and the adsorption capacity of the samples was analyzed and characterized by an isothermal adsorption test; the change patterns of particle characteristics were investigated by the scanning electron microscope and thermogravimetric analyzer, correlation analysis of the factors influencing the adsorption process was performed. The results show that the particles have adsorption capacity and belong to the type of multilayer adsorption on porous media; the pore diameter is continuously distributed in the range of 8–80 nm with multiple peaks, which is the category of mesoporous and macroporous; the adsorption capacity of the sample particles increase with the increase of engine speed. Compared with the particles at the inlet of the exhaust pipe, the box-counting dimension (DB) of particles at the outlet increased, the content of water and soluble organic fraction (SOF) increased, the activation energy (E) decreased. Among the parameters affecting the adsorption process, the increase of hydrocarbons concentration contribute to the increase of particle adsorption and E reduction; the increase of the average temperature of the exhaust pipe inhibit the increase of the DB, and the increase of the temperature difference between the inlet and outlet facilitate the adsorption of water and SOF by the particles; the decrease of the adsorption time is one of the main reasons for the slowdown of the increase in DB; the average pore diameter had the greatest positive correlation with the amount of variation in the DB; the increase in specific surface area and pore volume of the sample particles was the dominant cause of the increase in adsorption capacity as well as the decrease in E.

Abstract:Pressure drop and filtration efficiency are important indicators of capture performance of diesel particulate filter (DPF). In this paper, the DPF three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model developed by the three-dimensional software AVL Fire is used to investigate the influence of key structural factors on the capture performance. The results show that the pressure drop in DPF can be reduced by properly increasing the filter diameter, filter length, CPSI or reducing the wall thickness. Increasing the filter diameter, filter length and wall thickness or reducing CPSI in an appropriate range is conducive to improving the DPF filtration efficiency. In addition, based on the results of grey correlation analysis (GRA), the wall thickness, as the most significant structural factor, should be given priority in the design of DPF. This work has important reference value for optimizing DPF capture performance and extending its working time.

Abstract:As the most widely used engine type in daily industrial production, diesel engine plays an important role in industrial and agricultural production. In recent years, with the rapid development of industrial technology, the working mode of diesel engine has also undergone tremendous changes, gradually changing to environment-friendly. In recent years, it has attracted the attention of researchers. This paper will introduce the generation principle of emissions from two aspects: 1. The working process of diesel engine. 2. Fuel proportion. Then, the main direction is to find solutions to reduce particulate emissions. One possible method is to use metal fuel additives to promote the regeneration of DPF (diesel particulate trap), while a possible solution is to use additives to reduce the activation energy. Another method is to improve the combustion of diesel engine through metal catalyst, which helps to reduce fuel consumption and inhibit the generation of harmful soot. This paper will focus on the analysis and search for suitable additive materials. The conclusion is that the additives containing organometallic materials are the most effective additives at present.

Abstract:The elimination of pollutants from diesel exhaust has received widespread research attention as they cause serious air pollution and pose a threat to human health. Catalytic post-treatment technology is one of the most effective and universal technologies to treat diesel exhaust pollutants. The design and development of efficient and low-cost catalysts is the key factor to realize the wide application of catalytic post-treatment technology. Cerium (Ce)-based oxides with specific morphologies are widely used to eliminate pollutants in diesel vehicle exhaust due to their unique physical and chemical properties, such as high catalytic activity, low cost and non-toxicity. In this review, the preparation methods of Ce-based oxide materials with specific morphologies, such as nanoparticles, nanocubes, nanorods, nanofibers, and multi-stage pores, are introduced in detail, and the research progress on using these catalysts for the removal of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, soot particles, nitrogen oxides, and other pollutants from diesel exhaust is reviewed in detail. Finally, the unresolved issues associated with using Ce-based oxide catalysts with a specific morphology to catalytically remove pollutants from diesel exhaust are highlighted, and future application prospects and development directions are discussed. Abstract:In recent years, oil–water separation has been widely researched to reduce the influences of industrial wastewater and offshore oil spills. A filter membrane with special wettability can achieve the separation because of its opposite wettability for water phase and oil phase. In the field of filter membrane with special wettability, porous metal filter membranes have been much investigated because of the associated high efficiency, portability, high plasticity, high thermal stability, and low cost. This article provides an overview of the research progress of the porous metal filter membrane fabrication and discusses the future developments in this field.

Abstract:At present, diesel vehicles still play an irreplaceable role in the traditional energy field in China. Diesel vehicle exhaust contains hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter, which can lead to haze weather, photochemical smog, and the greenhouse effect; endanger human health; and damage the ecological environment. In 2020, the number of motor vehicles in China reached 372 million, and the number of automobiles reached 281 million, of which 20.92 million are diesel vehicles, accounting for only 5.6% of the number of motor vehicles and 7.4% of the number of automobiles. Nevertheless, diesel vehicles emitted 88.8% of nitrogen oxides and 99% of particulate matter in total vehicle emissions. Diesel vehicles, especially diesel trucks, have become the top priority of motor vehicle pollution control. However, there are few reviews on the comprehensive treatment of diesel vehicle exhaust. This review provides an overview of exhaust gas composition, hazards, and treatment techniques. Phytoremediation, three-way catalytic conversion, rare earth catalytic degradation, and nanoscale TiO 2 catalytic degradation are briefly described.

Abstract:The key technology of the diesel exhaust particulate filter is the filter regeneration.The concept of the equilibrium point of soot mass is put forward in this paper.The regeneration condition,the influencing factors and regeneration technologies are studied according to the Arrhenius Equation from the point of view of the equilibrium point of soot mass.And the energy consumes during the period of filter heat regeneration and some measures of control energy are analyzed according to the Energy Balance Equation.The results of this study can provide a reference to the selection of the regeneration technology of the diesel exhaust particulate filter.
