Abstract:Relationships between the generalized diffraction integral formula for angular spectrum through any misaligned optical system in spatial-frequency domain and the fractional Fourier transform are bridged in this paper, which provides a new description of the diffraction of any misaligned optical system in spatial-frequency domain. Abstract:Based on the misaligned diffraction integral formula for misaligned optical systems, the diffraction for misaligned Lohmann's fractional Fourier transformation system and quasi-asymmetrically inhomogeneous medium are analysed, respectively. It is found that there exist similar expressions of misaligned diffraction integral formula and they are essentially equivalent. And also, a new concept of misaligned fractional Fourier transform is put forward.

Abstract:Summary It is shown that, under some conditions, the generalized diffraction integral formula for any misaligned optical system in spatial-domain could be described by the fractional Fourier transform. Abstract:The fractional Fourier express of the first-order optical system was derived by decomposing the transfer matrices of first-order optical system into coordinate rotation matrix,scale matrix and chirp matrix in Wigner phase space.The results show that an arbitrary first-order optical system can be expressed as the scaled and chirp modulation fractional Fourier transform.The transfer matrix and diffractive integral formula in frequency domain were acquired by rotating the input and output optical field π/2 in the phase space.Accordingly the fractional Fourier transforms of a first-order optical system in frequency domain were also obtained.By comparing the transfer matrices of two first-order optical systems in space and frequency domains respectively, it is found that the two first-order optical systems in different domain can be expressed as two different expressions of one and the same transfer based on different coordinates.At last the condition is derived for an optical system to implement the fractional Fourier transform in space and frequency domains with the same order.

Abstract:Under the condition of rotational symmetry fractional Fourier transforms become fractional Hankel transforms. The relationships between the fractional Hankel transform and the diffraction of a misaligned optical system are established in this paper. By settling and discussing the diffraction integral formulae of a misaligned ABCD optical system, the fractional Hankel transform of an input function can be obtained by selecting a suitable reference plane under given conditions.

Abstract:The effect of misalignment on optical fractional Fourier transforming systems is analysed in this paper. Meanwhile, a concept of perturbed fractional Fourier transform is put forward. By using the generalized misaligned diffraction integral formulae for misaligned optical systems, it is shown that the diffraction characteristics for misaligned Lohmann's fractional Fourier transforming systems and quasi-asymmetric inhomogeneous media are able to perform the perturbed fractional Fourier transform and are essentially equivalent. And also, a relative discussion is given.

Abstract:By expanding the hard aperture function into a finite sum of complex Gaussian functions, approximate analytical expressions of Wigner distribution function for fundamental mode Gaussian beam through an apertured and misaligned ABCD optical system are derived. Compared with the aligned case, results show that the misaligned optical system will introduce in the output Wigner distribution function a coordinate shift in space-frequency plane. To examine the analytical results, some numerical simulations are carried out and the absolute errors between analytical results and numerical integral ones are presented. It is shown that the approximate analytical results are proper and ascendant.

Abstract:We emphasize the diffraction properties of cylindrically symmetrical first order systems. Based on matrix optics, our investigations lead to two conclusions. One is that diffraction of such a lossless system consists of a fractional Fourier transform. The other is that the fractional order of the system is not unique. Abstract:By expanding the aperture into complex Gaussian functions, the approximate analytical impulse response function of apertured and misaligned ABCD optical system in phase-space is determined, which allows us to formulate the input–output relation completely in terms of Wigner distribution functions. Its shown that the hard-aperture placed before the optical system will change the shape of output signal Wigner distribution and the misalignment of optical system will introduce the output Wigner distribution function a coordinate shift in phase-space. For examining the analytical results some numerical simulation are done and the graphical results as well as the absolute errors between analytical results and numerical integral ones are presented.

Abstract:The optical structures for implementation of the fractional Fourier transform were analyzed based on the theory of impulse response functions of the lens combination optical system, and the meaning of the standard focal length was discussed. Several general optical setups were provided. By using these setups, the standard focal length can be adjusted easily. It will be significant for designing a spatially, variant filtering system with multiple cascaded optical fractional Fourier transformers. The experimental results performed by a single lens or double lenses are also given.

Abstract:The well-known Collins diffraction integral formula for description through any axial symmetrical optical systems in spatial-domain could be written in terms of the fractional Fourier transform in the Cartesian coordinates, or could be written in terms of the fractional Hankel transform in the cylindrical coordinates. It is shown that, when the matrix element A = 0, it corresponds to the standard Fourier transform or standard Hankel transform for spatial coordinate; and when B = 0, it corresponds to image-forming operator transform. The case of free space is discussed as a special one.

Abstract:Some developments on fractional Fourier optics are reported in this paper. First, a thick lens can be regarded as a fractional Fourier transformer. Second, relations between the Collins formulae and the fractional Fourier transform or fractional Hankel transform are bridged, we show that the Collins formulae in spatial domain or in spatial-frequency domain can be described by the fractional Fourier transform or fractional Hankel transform. Third, connections between the multi-element resonators and the scaled fractional Fourier transforms are established, it is shown that there exists twice scaled fractional Fourier transform for beams in completing one round trip, the beam oscillation in resonator can be viewed as a process of consecutive implementing scaled fractional Fourier transform. Finally, some extensions of the fractional Fourier transforms to misaligned optical systems are simply reviewed.

Abstract:Within the frame of the Schroedinger formulation of light beam propagation, the ABCD law is extended to the so-called effective ABCD system which effective beam quality factor is conservative. The evolution equations of beam width, curvature radius and effective divergence are derived, respectively. For the effective ABCD systems which second derivative of beam width square with respect to the axial coordinate is a constant, the nonlinear evolution equations of spatial coordinate operator and momentum operator are obtained by means of Heisenberg picture, respectively, and the corresponding Huygens integral is solved by a simple iterative method.

Abstract:Diffraction of coherent x-ray beams is treated through the Fractionnal Fourier transform. The transformation allow us to deal with coherent diffraction experiments from the Fresnel to the Fraunhofer regime. The analogy with the Huygens-Fresnel theory is first discussed and a generalized uncertainty principle is introduced.

Abstract:The effect of lens with spherical aberration on the fractional Fourier transformation systems is introduced and analysed in this paper. Consider the fundamental mode Gaussian beam as an input function, the intensity distributions of the output field through the fractional Fourier transformation system with spherically aberrated lens are obtained by numerical calculation. The results show that different kinds or values of spherical aberration coefficient contribute to the output intensity distribution differently even for the same fractional order. It is also shown that Lohmann’s two types of optical setups with spherically aberrated lens for implementing the fractional Fourier transform are no longer equivalent.

Abstract:An inadequate interpretation in an article [Appl. Opt. 45, 8315 (2006)] on complex order extended fractional Fourier transform is pointed out.
