Abstract:Abstract Based on Fourier transforms the generalized diffraction integral formula for a beam through any misaligned optical system in spatial-frequency domain is derived in this paper. It is shown that the diffraction integral formula in spatial-frequency domain is related with the ray transfer matrix elements and the misaligned parameters. And some special cases are discussed, an example is also given to illustrate its application.

Abstract:Summary It is shown that, under some conditions, the generalized diffraction integral formula for any misaligned optical system in spatial-domain could be described by the fractional Fourier transform. On the other hand, the generalized diffraction integral formula for angular spectra through any misaligned optical system in spatial-frequency domain could also be described by the fractional Fourier transform. A practical optical system with a misaligned lens is given to illustrate its application.

Abstract:By expanding the hard aperture function into a finite sum of complex Gaussian functions, approximate analytical expressions of Wigner distribution function for fundamental mode Gaussian beam through an apertured and misaligned ABCD optical system are derived. Compared with the aligned case, results show that the misaligned optical system will introduce in the output Wigner distribution function a coordinate shift in space-frequency plane. To examine the analytical results, some numerical simulations are carried out and the absolute errors between analytical results and numerical integral ones are presented. It is shown that the approximate analytical results are proper and ascendant.

Abstract:Imitated the optical system of Rowland circle structure, the Rowland sphere structure is built in this paper, the Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction scalar integral formula of electromagnetic wave is simplified on the Rowland sphere structure, the computational formulas of spatial frequency spectrum and diffractional far field distribution from the weakly guiding optical fiber LP mode are derived. The concept of central disc in LP 01 mode optical fiber diffractional far field, which had analogy to the Airy disc of plane wave Fraunhofer diffraction from circular aperture, is presented, and the calculational formulas of LP 01 mode optical fiber diffractional far field divergence half width is deduced in the end of this paper.

Abstract:Summary In the present paper, a diffraction integral formula for a misaligned optical system is derived. The interference effects of opticalelement arrays are studied by means of such a formula. The possibility of eliminating interference fringes is discussed. The conclusion is that the interference fringes could be eliminated when the αβγδ condition for arrays is satisfied. The synthetical aberration is simultaneously eliminated. However, in this case, the synthetical image coincides with the individual images. For some special application, the synthetical image does not coincide with the individual images and the αβγδ condition is not fulfilled. But the interference fringes may disappear in some special cases.

Abstract:Based on the misaligned diffraction integral formula for misaligned optical systems, the diffraction for misaligned Lohmann's fractional Fourier transformation system and quasi-asymmetrically inhomogeneous medium are analysed, respectively. It is found that there exist similar expressions of misaligned diffraction integral formula and they are essentially equivalent. And also, a new concept of misaligned fractional Fourier transform is put forward.

Abstract:By expanding the aperture into complex Gaussian functions, the approximate analytical impulse response function of apertured and misaligned ABCD optical system in phase-space is determined, which allows us to formulate the input–output relation completely in terms of Wigner distribution functions. Its shown that the hard-aperture placed before the optical system will change the shape of output signal Wigner distribution and the misalignment of optical system will introduce the output Wigner distribution function a coordinate shift in phase-space. For examining the analytical results some numerical simulation are done and the graphical results as well as the absolute errors between analytical results and numerical integral ones are presented.

Abstract:The fractional Fourier express of the first-order optical system was derived by decomposing the transfer matrices of first-order optical system into coordinate rotation matrix,scale matrix and chirp matrix in Wigner phase space.The results show that an arbitrary first-order optical system can be expressed as the scaled and chirp modulation fractional Fourier transform.The transfer matrix and diffractive integral formula in frequency domain were acquired by rotating the input and output optical field π/2 in the phase space.Accordingly the fractional Fourier transforms of a first-order optical system in frequency domain were also obtained.By comparing the transfer matrices of two first-order optical systems in space and frequency domains respectively, it is found that the two first-order optical systems in different domain can be expressed as two different expressions of one and the same transfer based on different coordinates.At last the condition is derived for an optical system to implement the fractional Fourier transform in space and frequency domains with the same order.

Abstract:Under the condition of rotational symmetry fractional Fourier transforms become fractional Hankel transforms. The relationships between the fractional Hankel transform and the diffraction of a misaligned optical system are established in this paper. By settling and discussing the diffraction integral formulae of a misaligned ABCD optical system, the fractional Hankel transform of an input function can be obtained by selecting a suitable reference plane under given conditions.

Abstract:The effect of misalignment on optical fractional Fourier transforming systems is analysed in this paper. Meanwhile, a concept of perturbed fractional Fourier transform is put forward. By using the generalized misaligned diffraction integral formulae for misaligned optical systems, it is shown that the diffraction characteristics for misaligned Lohmann's fractional Fourier transforming systems and quasi-asymmetric inhomogeneous media are able to perform the perturbed fractional Fourier transform and are essentially equivalent. And also, a relative discussion is given.

Abstract:The propagation formulae of elliptical Gaussian beam through misaligned optical systems in spatial domain and spatial-frequency domain are investigated analytically by using tensor method. The derived formulae provide a powerful tool for treating the propagation and transformation of elliptical Gaussian beam through misaligned optical systems. As an application example, the propagation properties of elliptical Gaussian beam through a misaligned thin lens are illustrated.

Abstract:On the basis of the generalized diffraction integral formula for misaligned optical systems in spatial domain, an analytical propagation expression for the elliptical cosh-Gaussian beam (EChGB) passing through misaligned optical systems is obtained by using vector integration. Some numerical simulations are illustrated for the propagation properties of an EChGB through a misaligned optical transforming system with a misaligned thin lens. As an application example, the propagation of off-axial EChGBs passing through misaligned optical systems is studied, and further extensions are also pointed out.

Abstract:On the basis of the generalized diffraction integral formula for misaligned optical systems in the spatial domain, an analytical propagation expression for the elements of the cross-spectral density matrix of a random electromagnetic beam passing through a misaligned optical system in turbulent atmosphere is derived. Some analyses are illustrated by numerical examples relating to changes in the state of polarization of an electromagnetic Gaussian Schell-model beam propagating through such an optical system. It is shown that the misalignment has a significant influence on the intensity profile and the state of polarization of the beam, but the influence becomes smaller for the beam propagating in strong turbulent atmosphere. The method in this paper can be applied for sources that are either isotropic or anisotropic. It is shown that the isotropic sources and the anisotropic sources have different polarization properties on beam propagation.

Abstract:The generalized diffraction integralis used to derive a generalized formula for high-order Bessel–Gaussian beams (HBGBs) through a misaligned first-order ABCD optical system. It is found that, when a HBGB propagates through a misaligned optical system, the beam shape of the output beam is unchanged. However, the center of the output beam is deviated from the optical axis, forming a decentered HBGB. The position of the output beam may be controlled by adjusting the misaligned parameters. Based on the derived formula, the diffraction patterns of HBGBs propagating through a simple misaligned lens system have been calculated numerically. These results may be useful in the application of laser beams for trapping and manipulating a wide variety of particles.

We find that the degree of polarization in the neighboring areas of the focal plane is oscillating, and the effect of misalignment on coherence is not so evident as that on polarization.
