Abstract:Great advances in the development of efficient luminescent materials are the driving force behind organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Sublimable ionic transition-metal complexes (iTMCs) have emerged as a large family of new emissive dopants applied for vacuum-deposited OLEDs, while the achievement of excellent performance remains arduous. A series of novel sublimable cationic iridium(III) complexes have been designed and synthesized, containing an imidazole-type ancillary ligand and tetraphenylborate-type negative counter-ions with large steric hindrance and well-dispersed charges. The photophysical properties, electrochemical behaviors, and thermal stability are fully investigated and discussed, then demonstrated by theoretical calculations. Yellow- and orange-emitting OLEDs thereof are fabricated by vacuum evaporation deposition, realizing a high external quantum efficiency of up to 11 %, maximum brightness over 27.3×103 cd m-2 and low turn-on voltages below 2.4 V, among the best results of analogous phosphorescent OLEDs based on iTMCs. This work indicates the promising applications of sublimable iTMCs in state-of-the-art vacuum-deposited optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:We have devised a series of novel sublimable cationic iridium(III) complexes by ligand control, investigated their photophysical properties, electrochemical behaviours and thermal stabilities, and then fabricated vacuum-evaporated-deposited organic light-emitting diodes. By doping these cationic iridium(III) complexes into a thermally activated delayed fluorescence bipolar host material at very low concentrations of 1 or 2%, we have achieved high-performance yellow-and orange-emitting diodes with peak external quantum efficiencies of 13.7 and 10.3%, respectively. All the devices show maximum luminance exceeding 27.3 103 cd m 2 and low turn-voltages varying from 2.2 to 2.5 V. To our knowledge, these values are the record performance of analogous devices based on cationic iridium(III) complexes, indicating their great promise as phosphorescent emitters for flat-panel displays and solid-state lightning techonology.

Abstract:Cationic iridium(III) complexes show great promise as phosphorescent materials, while their utilization in organic light-emitting diodes is severely hindered by the inferior sublimability and low device performance. Here we devise a judicious strategy to develop high-efficiency sublimable cationic iridium(III) complexes by simultaneously introducing sterically hindered spacers into the negative counterions, major and ancillary ligands. We have exploited a novel series of yellow and red emitters, investigated their photophysical properties, electrochemical behaviors, and thermal stabilities, and finally fabricated organic light-emitting diodes by vacuum evaporation deposition. Record-high device performance has been achieved with a superior external quantum efficiency of 16%, excellent power efficiency of 49 lm/W, maximum brightness over 27.3 X 10(3) cd/m(2), very low turn-on voltage below 2.5 V, and quite small efficiency roll-off. Our study represents a significant advance in the development of sublimable cationic iridium(III) complexes and evidences their promising applications in state-of-the-art optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Sublimable cationic iridium(III) complexes consisting of light-emitting coordinated iridium(III) cations and nonluminous negative counter-ions, show excellent photophysical properties, superior electrochemical behaviors and high thermal stabilities, therefore have emerged as a new library of phosphorescent materials for various organic optoelectronic devices. Here we summarize and highlight the recent progress in sublimable cationic iridium(III) complexes, regarding the material design strategies, synthetic routes, photoluminescent characteristics in both solutions and neat films, together with the current utilization in organic light-emitting diodes based on the emissive material layers fabricated by vacuum evaporation deposition. Finally, we present a brief outlook thereon, indicating the great promise and brilliant application prospect of sublimable cationic iridium(III) complexes in future flat-panel display and solid-state lighting technology.

Abstract:Using cationic iridium complexes as dopants and poly(N-vinylcarbazole) as host, highly efficient blue-green to red and white organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have been fabricated by a solution process. In single-layer devices, electron-trapping by complexes dominates the device performance. Complexes with cyclometalated 2-phenylpyridine ligands show better device performance compared with those containing cyclometalated 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridine ligands. With the addition of an electron-transporting/exciton-blocking layer, the devices show improved performances, achieving peak current efficiencies of 24.3, 25.3, 20.5, and 4.2cdA−1 for the blue-green, green, yellow, and red electroluminescence, respectively. White OLEDs have been fabricated by co-doping blue-green and red-emitting complexes, attaining a peak current efficiency of 20.7cdA−1. Thus, cationic iridium complexes can be used as dopants in solution-processed OLEDs, as well as in light-emitting electrochemical cells, to achieve highly efficient blue-green to red and white electroluminescence.

Abstract:Iridium (Ir)(iii) complexes with sufficient luminous efficiency and narrow full width at half maxima (FWHM) are required urgently for realizing organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) simultaneously with high electroluminescence efficiency and good color purity. In this work, three novel main ligands incorporating the peripheral large steric hindrance units and rigid structures for efficiently suppressing the intermolecular stacking effect, restricting the intramolecular relaxation and reducing the concentration quenching are developed. The corresponding Ir(iii) complexes exhibit emission peaks at 618, 609 and 621 nm, short phosphorescence lifetimes around 1 mu s, high photoluminescence quantum yields of 80-90% and a narrow FWHM of 40 nm in solution. Moreover, the devices based on these Ir(iii) complexes show superior performances with the Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage color coordinates of (x = 0.63-0.64 and y = 0.32-0.35), close to the standard red emission required by the National Television System Committee. In particular, the device using Ir-2CF(3) exhibits the best performances with a maximum luminance of 38 277 cd m(-2), a maximum current efficiency of 47.85 cd A(-1), and a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE(max)) up to 32.0% as well as extremely low efficiency roll-off with an EQE of 30.8% at 1000 cd m(-2), which are among the best results ever reported for pure red OLEDs using Ir(iii) complexes. Therefore, the design of main ligands by modulating the peripheral large steric hindrance provides an effective strategy for realizing efficient Ir(iii) complex-based OLEDs simultaneously with narrow emission and high efficiency.

Abstract:Abstract The promising cyclometalated iridium (III) complexes have been proved to possess great potential in vacuum−deposited organic light−emitting diodes (OLEDs) applications for full−color displays and white solid−state lighting sources. Herein, based on the unique bidentate ligand of dibenzo[a,c]phenazine (dbpz) group with strong conjugated effect of aromatic rings for red emission, four novel [3+2+1] coordinated iridium (III) emissive materials have been rationally designed and synthesized. The monodentate ligands of −CN and −OCN have been effectively employed to tune the deep−red emission of 628−675 nm with high photoluminescence quantum yields up to 98%. Moreover, all devices displayed deep−red color coordinates ranging from (0.675, 0.325) to (0.716, 0.284), which is close to the standard−red color coordinates of (0.708, 0.292), as recommended by International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunication (ITU−R) BT.2020. The device based on n BuIr(dbpz)CN with an exciplex cohost has exhibited maximum external quantum efficiencies of 20.7% and good stability. With n BuIr(dbpz)CN as an effective sensitizer, the n BuIr(dbpz)OCN based phosphorescent OLED devices have successfully demonstrated cascading energy transfer processes, contributing to pure red emission with maximum luminance as high as 6471 cd m −2 . Therefore, this work has been successfully demonstrated rational molecular design strategy of [3+2+1] iridium complexes to obtain highly efficient deep−red electrophosphorescent emission.

Vacuum-Deposited Versus Spin-Coated Emissive Layers for Fabricating High-Performance Blue-Green-Emitting Diodes.

Abstract:The electroluminescent characteristics of two sublimable cationic iridium(III) complexes that bear the same coordinated iridium(III) cation but different tetraphenylborate-type negative counterions have been investigated. Blue-green-emitting devices were successfully fabricated from these complexes using various preparation processes, namely, spin-coating and vacuum evaporation deposition. Experiments indicated that devices with vacuum-deposited emissive layers showed superior photoelectric properties relative to devices with spin-coated emissive layers, including a maximum current efficiency of 27.91 cd A-1 , an external quantum efficiency of 10.48 %, a power efficiency of 27.73 lm W-1 and the highest luminance of up to 25.34×103 cd m-2 , whereas the turn-on voltages were quite low. The overall device performance surely ranks among the best of phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes based on ionic transition-metal complexes.

Abstract:This review is an update on recent developments in emissive iridium(III) phosphorescent complexes and their applications in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The emphasis is focused on complexes with emission colors spanning the whole visible spectral region, which is extremely important for applications of OLEDs in display and white-light luminance. In each color section, materials are classified according to their coordination configuration, including homoleptic, heteroleptic and tridentate, trying to clarify the relationship between the molecular structure and the photophysical properties. Since the emission color, photoluminescence efficiency and carrier mobility of the phosphors are critical for device performances, we endeavor to dig out these values along with the measuring methods from the publications, and rational chemical modifications aiming for high efficiency and carrier mobility with different colors are also discussed. Abstract:A new and efficient ionic orange-red Ir(III) complex is rationally designed by utilizing 2-(4-chloro-3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-4-methylquinoline and a large conjugated 2,2'-biquinoline as main ligand and ancillary ligand, respectively. The complex shows bright phosphorescence peaking at 583 and 626 nm (shoulder) with high absolute phosphorescent quantum efficiency of 81.3% and moderate emission lifetime of 1.54 mu s in dichloromethane solution, which is suitable for fabricating high-performance solution processed organic light-emitting diode. The device based on this ionic complex exhibits excellent electroluminescence performance, with the maximum luminance, external quantum efficiency, current efficiency, and power efficiency of up to 1209 cd/m(2), 10.20%, 21.9 cd/A and 9.57 lm/W, respectively, thereby demonstrating that this new cationic Ir(III) complex possesses tremendous potentials for the future solution-processed electroluminescence. Abstract:Due to the high quantum efficiency and wide scope of emission colors, iridium (Ir) (III) complexes have been widely applied as guest materials for OLEDs (organic light-emitting diodes). Contrary to well-developed Ir(III)-based red and green phosphorescent complexes, the efficient blue emitters are rare reported. Like the development of the LED, the absence of efficient and stable blue materials hinders the widely practical application of the OLEDs. Inspired by this, we designed two novel ancillary ligands of phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)phosphinate (ppp) and dipyridinylphosphinate (dpp) for efficient blue phosphorescent iridium complexes (dfppy) 2 Ir(ppp) and (dfppy) 2 Ir(dpp) (dfppy = 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridine) with good electron transport property. The devices using the new iridium phosphors display excellent electroluminescence (EL) performances with a peak current efficiency of 58.78 cd/A, a maximum external quantum efficiency of 28.3%, a peak power efficiency of 52.74 lm/W and negligible efficiency roll-off ratios. The results demonstrated that iridium complexes with pyridinylphosphinate ligands are potential blue phosphorescent materials for OLEDs.
Sublimable Cationic Iridium(iii) Complexes with Large Steric Hindrance for High-Performance Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract:A series of novel sublimable cationic iridium(iii) complexes with 2-phenylquinoline as the major cyclometalated ligand and imidazole-type ancillary ligands were designed and synthesized. It is found that complexes containing active hydrogen atoms in the ancillary ligands exhibited poor electroluminescence performance. By introducing a phenyl group into the ancillary ligands to protect the active hydrogen atoms and simultaneously increase the steric hindrance of complexes, the device performance was drastically improved, due to the reduced negative effects of the active hydrogen atoms and the decreased intermolecular interaction and aggregation. We obtained high efficiency devices with a superior external quantum efficiency of 14.7%, high brightness, a low turn-on voltage of only 2.4 V and low efficiency roll-off at high luminance, the best results for yellow OLEDs based on sublimable cationic iridium(iii) complexes.
Highly Efficient Blue-Green Organic Light-Emitting Diodes Achieved by Controlling the Anionic Migration of Cationic Iridium(Iii) Complexes

Abstract:We designed and synthesized a series of cationic iridium(III) complexes with the same coordinated iridium(III) cation but different-sized counter-ions, investigated their photophysical properties, electrochemical behaviours and thermal stability, then fabricated single-layer solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) thereof, and demonstrated anionic migration in devices. By doping these cationic iridium(III) complexes at low concentrations (2 or 3 wt%) thus avoiding their anionic migration, we succeeded in the preparation of efficient blue-green OLEDs, achieving the highest current efficiency of 17.1 cd A−1, an external quantum efficiency of 6.8%, a maximum luminance of 14.2 × 103 cd m−2 and colour coordinates of (0.21, 0.48). To our knowledge, these values are among the best reported OLEDs based on ionic transition metal complexes as phosphorescent emitters in the blue-green region. The impact of different-sized counter-ions on carrier transport characteristics was also examined by single carrier devices. Notably, by doping these cationic iridium(III) complexes at high concentrations (20 wt%) and thus wisely employing their anionic migration, we developed simple-constructed OLEDs with a temporary p–i–n junction instead of active n-type dopants in the cathode and obtained a high current efficiency of 8.3 cd A−1 and a maximum luminance of 12.8 × 103 cd m−2, rather comparable to the corresponding OLEDs with the conventional Cs2CO3 active cathode.

Abstract:The white organic light-emitting diode has become as a new class of emerging solid-state lighting sources due to its advantage of warm, pure white light emission, flexible lighting, and environmentally friendly indoor lighting. Here, we report three rationally designed cyclometalated [3 + 2+1] iridium(III) complexes that emit white emission simultaneously from phosphorescent blue and yellow in the solid-state thin film. The blue GaN-based solid-state white light-emitting diodes with iridium(III) complexes as a color converter show a color rendering index of 84.4 and International Commission on Illumination (CIE) coordinates of (0.30, 0.33). In addition, the vac-uum-deposited organic light-emitting diode device exhibits a low turn-on voltage of 3.0 V and a maximum luminance (Lmax) of 335 cd m-2 with CIE coordinate of (0.31, 0.33), reaching standard naturally warm white light.

Abstract:We designed and synthesized a novel series of red-emitting cationic ruthenium(II) complexes 1-6 with the same coordinated ruthenium(II) cation tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) while different-sized negative counter-ions, namely chloride (1), tetrafluoroborate (2), hexafluorophosphate (3), perchlorate (4), tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate (5) and tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate (6), respectively. Their physicochemical characteristics including solubility, photophysical properties and electrochemical behaviors were fully investigated. Experiments indicated that introduction of bullcy anions could effectively lower the molecular polarity and lattice energy of these ionic materials, improve their solubility in organic solvents, thus enable constructing solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLED5) based on complexes 2-6. Furthermore, complex 6 was demonstrated evaporable, owing to the electrostatic interaction strongly reduced by its anion with the largest steric hindrance and well-dispersed charges. We succeeded in the preparation of orange-red-emitting OLED5 fabricated by vacuum evaporation deposition thereof, achieving a maximum brightness of 5345 cd m(-2) with color coordinates of (0.51, 0.44). To our knowledge, this is the first report on sublimable cationic ruthenium(II) complexes, suggesting their great potential as a new material system for sustainable phosphorescence.
