On the Deep Structure of Urbanization

Abstract:Urbanization is complex dynamical process,which is associated with urban system,urban form,urban ecology,and urbanism. Urban form involves the structure of a city as a system,while an urban system involves the structure of a system of cities and its hinterland. Urban form and urban system are related to both surface structure and deep structure of urbanization,and urbanism and urban ecology are related to the deep structure of urbanization. The surface structure indicates the quantity of urbanization,while the deep structure denotes the quality of urbanization. The deep structure of urbanization comprises at least three aspects. The first is social development rather than economic growth,the second is urban-rural cultural replacement rather than population replacement,and the third is the man-land relationship rather than social relationships. In China,the quantity of urbanization has been a focus of academic focus for a long time. Thus the measurement of urbanization level is brought to peopleu0027s attention. However,the quality of urbanization is out of focus of urban studies. In fact,understanding urbanization is not only an academic problem,but also a social problem or even an ideological problem. In order to improve the deep structure of urbanization,we must popularize the knowledge of urbanization in the middle and primary schools.
