Abstract:Currently, many theoretical researches and practical pursuits have been carried out to study on New Countryside Construction macroscopically by different circles. However, few studies have been done systemically and microscopically. Exemplified by Nizhi Village, Daishan County, Zhejiang Province, this article thoroughly analyzes the New Country Construction from the perspective of System Theory and by the way of field research. And this article puts forward that the New Countryside Construction is a process being continuously applied as far as a specific village is concerned This process is not only embodied in its content specification, but also in the integration of all elements. Most importantly, the process should be a dynamic one to update the New Countryside Construction continuously.

Abstract:This paper reviews literatures on China's urban village in four aspects containing definition,developing mechanism,value judgment and renewal measures. It is argued that neutral attitude should be taken as the logic beginning of policy analysis;an conceptual framework of"Institution-Action"could be used to explain the shaping mechanism of urban village;and in order to formulating synthetically strategies of community governance,the view of livable urban low-quality community should be hold in planning process,and existing institution factors and its related constraints should be well assessed.

Abstract:The paper summarizes the studies on urban village (chengzhongcun) in domestic and abroad from four perspectives including the concepts and definitions,the formation mechanism,the value orientations,and the renovation and reform strategies.Based on the summary,the paper states that a neutralized value orientation should be the logical starting point of analysis on urban village;the formation of urban village should be interpreted within the framework of "institution-action;" and the strategy of community management of urban village should be made from the angle of constructing city low-grade community and the restrictions of current institutions and various practical conditions.

Abstract:This study reviews and forecasts the study of rural residential areas,points out flaws in the existing studies,and predicts the key points in future studies.A comparative study was employed in this essay.Results indicate that existing studies of rural residential areas mainly focus on development trends,potential assessment,models and planning and driving forces and efficiency valuation.In the end,it is concluded that the studies regarding theories,regional difference,system constitution,peasant and government behaviors and interdisciplinary research shall be enhanced.

Abstract:Looking through all the research works concerning current situations of rural China, we find both a theory of rebuilding and a theory of collapse; as to the functions of the Clan in village governance, we find that the theory can be affirmative, negative and neutral. Numerous and confused theories all come out, and till now, people still do not have a distinct understanding of the rebuilding of clans and the relationship between clan and village governance. This status can be explained by the short of research. Though more and more researchers have been conducted with fieldwork, and the study is becoming more standard and with more academic dialogue and accumulative senses, and most of them made case studies, there is an obvious lacking in comparison among cases, a lacking in sampling surveys in full scale; the researches lack of a definite analyzing frame and a standard for discussion, fall short of a deep and detailed monographic study, and short of varied angles of vision to material collection and analysis.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to systematically review the origin and evolution of researches on rural homestead,and to figure out its development trend, in order to provide a basis for discovering research gaps and new research problems. Literature survey method, literature bibliometric analysis method are employed. Research results show that rural homestead researches can be divided into two parts: comprehensive researches and thematic researches. Comprehensive researches are composed with two sub-fields of homestead institutional change and property right system. Thematic researches can be further divided into five sub-sections, including homestead acquisition,circulation,mortgage,withdraw,and exchange. Currently, scientific researches in this field are over-concentrated in topics of homestead property right system,circulation,withdraw,exchange and so on. While, the research directions on homestead institutional change,acquisitions,mortgages and so on have not been received enough attention and need to be further explored.

Abstract:De-sociology and de-social-theory of village studies are ignorant of at least the four following issues. 1) From perspective of critical sociology,villages confront forces of market,which requires the separation of land and labor from community and their incorporation into market. So the core issue of village transformation is whether surrendering to forces of market or retaining village community. (2) From perspective of professional sociology,admitting the assumption that modern society still needs small and local community means acknowledging factors such as infrastructure for agricultural economy of village community might be loosened and deprived,but as a community,it remains essential resources of normal modern society. Whether it could adopt appropriate "sea channel strategy" to attain ties with society,depends on which kind of society is seen as normal by state and society. (3) From perspective of public sociology,whether local community is seen as enemy of civil society relies primarily on whether civil society is considered on basis of methodological individualism or communitarianism. From the latter position,appropriate village community is never the enemy of civil society. (4) From perspective of sociology of public policy,when state let rural labor migrate to cities,it might develop rural community vigorously,and develop rural-urban linkage on the premise of resolving economic and social inequality between rural and urban community to avoid breakdown of strategies between acceleration of urbanization and construction of new rural community.

Abstract:<span>This article is a historical ethnography of how village communities in southwest China had maintained a certain amount of autonomy amid the expanding state spatiality in the second half of the twentieth century. Shortly after the Chinese Communist Party took power in 1949, the party-state built up three successive subcounty administrative systems – the district-township system, the people's commune system, and the current township system – to expand its institutional terrains in the rural areas. Meanwhile, village communities under the jurisdiction of these penetrating administrative structures strove to maintain their social and physical boundaries through a series of traditional mechanisms. The interaction between the state's attempts to establish a socialist order and villages' tenacity to maintain their special territorial status resulted in a three-layered land rural land ownership, under which villages were able to maintain a certain degree of extraterritoriality. Such a situation has made the state territorial control in rural areas incomplete and porous.</span>

Abstract:The transition of urban-rural relationship not only indicates the significant change in modern Chinese society but also becomes the focused problem in understanding modern China.So far,overseas scholars paid attention to the urban-rural relationship of the late Qing Dynasty,emphasized the close ties between urban and rural areas while domestic scholars mainly focused on the economic opposition and unification between the two during the period of the Republic of China and stressed the urban-rural alienation of social identity.More research on modern urban-rural relationship is expected to be conducted in the ancient urban-rural relations,the motivating facotrs for modern urban-rural transition and the features of urban-rural interaction,and a further study on the perspective and regional diversity also becomes urgent.

Abstract:County yamuns,as the base of local administration in traditional China,are closely related to county construction as well as local people's livelihood.Central Wu,whose center is Suzhou,plays a vital role in Chines economic and political development of the Ming and Qing Dynasties,where the county administration is both mature and complex.Centering on the investigation of county yamuns,the paper briefly analyzes several changes in their internal structure and external tokens during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.It further discusses the internal relation between the county yamuns and the local community as well as people's opinions and evaluation of county yamuns,and through that indicates both regional difference and change of county administration and social relations,thereby reevaluating the position and role of counties in the late stage of the empire.

Abstract:Rural China has undergone rapid and profound changes since the late Qing Dynasty, as the process of state penetration into the countryside continued. State-building and state-society relations are the two major theoretical paradigms used to make sense of these changes. The former recognized the changes caused by state expansion, but questioned whether this expansion has achieved"modernity". The latter was focused on rural social order established through state-society interactions. Empirical evidence from the"targeted poverty alleviation"campaign shows the importance of mingling formal state power with informal rules to better suit uniform state policies with rural conditions.

Abstract:Based on the literature review of CNKI database on rural settlements in China over the last three decades, the paper supplied a general comment on the main research contents and current situation of domestic rural settlement in China from the view of architecture as well as other related fields. On the base of the review, the paper made a conclusion on the systematization of the complicated rural settlement under different research penetrations, accompanied by an explic itassessment of the major theories and methodologies deployed in the field. After that, it conven iently put forward that the future study should be focused on emphasizing the broadening of interdisciplinary vision to make the research orientation more diversified, enhancing the quantitative research scope by computer to make the research contents more scientific and accurate, and instructing related design exploration to combine the research achievement and design practice more effectively.
