Abstract:In this paper, the atomic mean square displacement (MSD) of single interface, surface-interface and multilayer system is calculated by using the method of Green's function and M-P crystal model. It is shown that the contribution of the single interface to the atomic MSD, similar to the case of single surface system, exhibits a long "tail", and the correlation length between interface-interface and surface-interface is much less than that between surface-surface.

Abstract:Electronic properties of a deformed semi-infinite mixed crystal chain are studied by using the Green's-function method. The conditions for the existence of the surface states and their decay rate into the bulk are calculated in the presence of surface deformation. Calculation of the bulk properties of the semi-infinite crystal shows severe modifications due to the presence of the surface. The local densities of states in the bulk exhibit strong oscillations attributed to Bragg diffraction at the surface.

Abstract:Efficient computation of lattice defect geometries such as point defects, dislocations, disconnections, grain boundaries, interfaces and free surfaces requires accurate coupling of displacements near the defect to the long-range elastic strain. Flexible boundary condition methods embedded a defect in infinite harmonic bulk through the lattice Green function. We demonstrate an efficient and accurate calculation of the lattice Green function from the force-constant matrix for general crystals with an arbitrary basis by extending a method for Bravais lattices. New terms appear due to the presence of optical modes and the possible loss of inversion symmetry. By separately treating poles and discontinuities in reciprocal space, numerical accuracy is controlled at all distances. We compute the lattice Green function for a two-dimensional model with broken symmetry to elucidate the role of different coupling terms. The algorithm is generally applicable in two and three dimensions, to crystals with arbitrary number of atoms in the unit cell, symmetry, and interactions.

Abstract:A Green's function technique is developed for the relaxation of simulation cell boundaries in the modelling of dislocation interactions using molecular dynamics. This method allows the replacement of fixed or periodical boundary conditions with flexible boundary conditions, thus minimizing the artificial effects due to images forces introduced by the fixed boundary condition, or the periodic repetition of simulation cells. The effectiveness of the Green's function in the removal of the fixed boundary image forces is first checked in the atomistic simulation involving the glide of the a/2 < 110 > dislocation in bcc tungsten. This method is then applied to study the reaction of an edge dislocation with voids in tungsten. The simulation results are compared with predictions from the continuum model.

Abstract:A CsCl-type (bcc) semi-infinite ferrimagnet with single-ion uniaxial anisotropy and a magnetic impurity layer is considered through combining Green function theory with the transfer-matrix method. The effect of the anisotropy term and the impurity layer on the surface spin wave spectrum is discussed. The influence of the impurity layer's distance from the surface on surface spin waves is also concerned.

Abstract:Using an effect-barrier height method, we investigate theoretically the influence of the coupling between normal and lateral motions of an electron on the surface electron states in a semi-infinite Al0.3Ga0.7As/GaAs superlattice with a cap layer consisting of ternary mixed crystal AlxGa1−xAs within the framework of effective-mass theory. Previous works on the surface states in semi-infinite superlattice paid much less attention to the coupling effect. However, our study showed that the coupling effect cannot be neglected when the difference of the effective mass of the electron between the well and barrier layers exists. It is found that the existence and features of the surface electron states, especially the higher-lying surface electron states, as well as the energy positions and widths of the miniband and minigaps are sensitively dependent on the transverse wave number. A brief analysis of these results is given.

Abstract:Based on Ref. [3](Acta Physica Sinica, 44(1995), 987(in Chinese)), we have derived the relations between lattice Green's functions for the semi-infinite square lattice and the infinite square lattice. The partial density of states and the formation condition of the surface localized state are calculated by virtue of lattice Green's function for the semi-infinite square lattice.

Abstract:A theoretical study, within the effective-mass approximation, on the coupling effects of applied magnetic fields along the growth direction of the superlattice on the surface electron states in a semi-infinite semiconductor superlattice is presented by using an effective-barrier height method. The coupling effect is necessarily considered when the difference of the electron effective masses between different materials cannot be neglected. Our numerical results show that the magneto-coupling effect brings about not only the splitting of the surface electron levels but also the definite dependence of the surface levels and its localization degree on magnetic fields and Landau indices. Our results also indicate that the imaginary component of Bloch wave number can serve as a measure of the localization degree of the surface electron states.
Contribution of Strain-Induced Modulation to the Sound Velocity in Lattice-Mismatched Quasiperiodic Superlattices

Abstract:The propagation of longitudinal-acoustic waves through a quasiperiodic superlattice composed of layers belonging to the cubic symmetry group is explored in terms of the interfacial strain effects. The results show features that seem unique to the lattice-mismatched superlattices. We find that the strain-induced modification of the propagation velocity in this type of superlattice is more pronounced and may be positive or negative, depending only on the velocity difference in the respective media. We also obtain universal formulas for the effective elastic coefficient and average and effective sound velocities, as well as the relevant modulation amplitude, which depends on the quasiperiodic index p. These expressions are applied to analyze the folded acoustic-phonon spectra of semiconductor Si-GexSi1-x and GaAs/Ga1-xAlxAs quasiperiodic Fibonacci superlattices. Our predictions for peak positions of the Raman spectra are in reasonable agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract:This investigation presents the Green functions for a decagonal quasicrystalline ma- terial with a parabolic boundary subject to a line force and a line dislocation by means of the complex variable method. The surface Green functions are treated as a special case, and the explicit expressions of displacements and hoop stress at the parabolic boundary are also given. Finally, the stresses and displacements induced by a phonon line force acting at the origin of the lower half-space are presented.

Abstract:The spin liquid state of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a triangular lattice is studied within the self-consistent Green's function method. It is shown that the spin excitation spectra is gapless, and ground-state energy per site is E_g/NJ=-0.966, which is in very good agreement with the results obtained within the variational Monte Carlo method based on the resonating-valence-bond state. Some thermodynamic properties are also discussed.

Abstract:We report an analytical evaluation of the mean-squared displacement (MSD) of the particles in glasses based on their coarse grained trajectories. The calculation is conducted by means of a local random configuration-tree theory that was recently proposed by one of us [C.-H. Lam, J. Stat. Mech. \textbf{2018}, 023301 (2018)]. Results are compared with the numerical simulations of a lattice glass model, and good quantitative agreement has been obtained over a wide range of temperatures in the entire region of time with virtually no free parameters. To the best of our knowledge, the calculation is the first in its kind.

Abstract:Using Green's function method, we investigate ferromagnetic films with a simple cubic lattice containing up to tenmonolayers. The Hamiltonian includes the Heisenberg exchange term, surface anisotropy (SA) and dipole interaction(DI). We calculate the magnetization as a function of temperature and film thickness, and we analyse the behaviourof spin canting. The result is in agreement with experiments. We calculate phase diagrams of SA versus DI to showthe conditions under which spontaneous magnetization can occur. As a special case, we discuss the Heisenberg modelwithout SA and DI.

Abstract:Phonon spectra of strained α-Sn/Ge superlattices are studied using a generalized Keating model. General features of phonons are discussed. Effects of interface intermixing on Raman spectra are investigated by a supercell calculation. In addition, electronic band structures are calculated by a tight-binding method.

Abstract:Using the real space method the lattice vibration behavior of integrated system of ferroelectrics and semiconductor with the aid of one-dimension model was investigated. The vibration characteristics of the surface mode, the interface mode and the mode in the boundary of Brillouin zone under the long range interaction was discussed. The Raman spectrum of GaAs/SrTiO3 was explained quantitatively in terms of the authors' calculation.

Abstract:This paper presents the basic principles and methods of Simulating Dislocations Using O-lattice. Based on Bollmann's O-lattice theory, the science calculation software, matlab, was used to establish a dislocation network on the interface of two bcc (or fcc) crystals. A single O-cell were and multiple O-cells simulated firstly, and then the dislocation configuration on the interface with an arbitrary crystal orientation for bcc crystals was simulated.

Abstract:International Journal of Modern Physics B, Ahead of Print. An analytical and numerical formalism is developed to study the influence of the various positions of substitution atoms B on the scattering and transmission vibration modes in quasi-1D monatomic structures A. The matching technique is employed to calculate the dynamical properties and transmittance spectra of two substituted atomic sites. The theoretical formalism gives a complete description of the lattice dynamics and the vibration-waves propagation in the presence of the impurity sites. Numerical calculations are performed for three different positions of the two substituted atoms B in the low-dimensional structure consisting of double monatomic parallel chains. First, we examine the position where the two B atoms are adjacent in the y-direction, afterwards, we place the two sites side by side in the x-direction. Lastly, the two sites are placed in oblique configuration. The obtained results show that phonons associated to the inhomogeneous structures are strongly dependent on the scattering frequency, elastic force parameters and the position of the atomic substituted sites. In the three considered positions, the presence of the B atoms gives rise to localized vibration effects. The fluctuations observed in the vibration spectra are related to resonances due to the coherent coupling between travelling phonons and the localized vibration modes in the neighborhood of the impurity sites.

Abstract:The dynamic behaviour in the vicinity of the interface for the strained superlattice is discussed in the classical mechanics frame based on the Seeger equation. We found that the motion and the accumulation of the dislocations by the non-linear resonance may give rise to the lamination or the fracture of the superlattice. At first, byintroducing the damping term,the Seeger equation describing the dislocation motion is reduced to the generalized Duffing equation describing superlattice in the small amplitude aproximation. Secondly,the main resonance, the super-harmonic resonance and the sub-harmonic resonance of the system are analysed by the multiscale method. The critical condition for the system to enter into resonance is found. It shows that the critical condition is related to the parameters of the system,by adeguately regulating the parameters of the system,the resonance can be avoided in principle,then the stability and the perfection of the superlattice materials may be bellev ensured.

Abstract:We generalize, and then use, a recently introduced formalism to study thermal fluctuations of atomic displacements in several two and three dimensional crystals. We study both close packed as well as open crystals with multi atom bases. Atomic displacement fluctuations in a solid, once coarse-grained over some neighborhood may be decomposed into two mutually orthogonal components. In any dimension $d$ there are always $d^2$ {\em affine} displacements representing local strains and rotations of the ideal reference configuration. In addition, there exists a number of {\em non-affine} localized displacement modes that cannot be represented as strains or rotations. The number of these modes depends on $d$ and the size of the coarse graining region. All thermodynamic averages and correlation functions concerning the affine and non-affine displacements may be computed within a harmonic theory. We show that for compact crystals, such as the square and triangular in $d=2$ and the simple, body-centered and face-centered cubic crystals in $d=3$, a single set of $d-$fold degenerate modes always dominate the non-affine sub-space and are separated from the rest by a large gap. These modes may be identified with specific precursor configurations that lead to lattice defects. Deformation mechanisms such as lattice slips and stacking faults in close packed crystals can also be understood within this framework. The qualitative features of these conclusions are expected to be independent of the details of the atomic interactions.

Abstract:For a critical examination of the dielectric continuum model as applied to a superlattice, we have introduced a microscopic model, which takes proper account of the long-range Coulomb interaction and yet permits easy solution for the long-wavelength LO and TO modes. With this model, it is shown that such long-wavelength modes approach different limits depending on directions of propagation relative to the axis of the superlattice. This demonstrates that to treat the confined bulklike modes in superlattices as modes of isolated slabs is inadequate.
