Abstract:This research examines the humanism-normativism dichotomy through polarity theory, assessing their impacts on long-term orientation while integrating Eastern and Western philosophies. Five studies, employing questionnaires and experimental paradigms, have established significant positive correlations between humanism and various indicators of long-term orientation—specifically, time perspective, time discounting, and delayed gratification. These relationships are mediated by an internal locus of control, which is found to be more pronounced in humanistic individuals. Additionally, humanism is associated with a less utilitarian and more deontological approach in resolving moral dilemmas. A key finding is the moderating role of the perception of change; it strengthens the effect of an internal locus of control on long-term planning for those who perceive future outcomes as malleable. This perception concurrently diminishes the emphasis on tradition within the humanist framework. The findings endorse the adoption of human-centric ideologies in educational and policy-making spheres to mitigate societal shortsightedness, thus marrying political and psychological insights. As a pioneering application of such theoretical constructs in China, this work suggests potential for these philosophies to inform sustainable, foresight-oriented societal development, highlighting the need for broader research to diversify insights into the psychological effects of these worldviews.
