Abstract:The 21st century is facing fierce international competition and fluctuating market conditions.In striving to remain manufacturing enterprises competitive, a new manufacturing mode,the reconfigurable manufacturing system (RMS), is introduced to meet the requirementsof rapidly changing of market conditions. In this paper, the background and evolution ofRMS are first discussed, followed the definition and the characteristics. Then theconfiguration of RMS is presented, and the layout fundamentals and techniques of RMSare discussed based on economic analysis, finally an application is used successfully.
