Abstract:Patrol survey is a widely used method for data collection in parking studies, and one of its goals is to obtain the average parking duration for a parking area. However, the inaccuracy is unavoidable; one main reason is that short stay vehicles are often not observed. To reduce the error from the survey, short observation intervals can be chosen, but that can be very expensive. In this article, a generalized analytical model is built to analyse this error, several suggestions are made to guarantee the accuracy, and to coordinate it with the survey costs. Through dimensional analysis, the relation between time length of observation interval, estimated parking duration, and survey accuracy is illustrated. In the numerical example, a correction for the value of average duration is introduced to increase the accuracy. We further used simulation-based examples to extend the model and the conclusions to more generalized situations. The final result shows that with this approach, the accuracy of the survey could be estimated and enhanced. It helps the surveyors in choosing a proper length for the survey interval, so one could obtain high quality results from the patrol survey while keeping costs to a minimum.

Abstract:In large parking lots, it is generally difficult for drivers to know ahead of time whether there will be available parking spots and where they are. Besides, it is logistically cumbersome to wait in line for paying parking fees when leaving. In this demo, we develop an intelligent parking system called iParking. iParking could help users monitor parking states, search for a vacant parking spot, reserve it and make a self-service payment. It is low-cost providing much convenience for both drivers and parking lot management.

Abstract:Patrol surveys are frequently used to estimate average parking duration. However, error in estimating is unavoidable and yet unpredictable. It is, therefore, hard for surveyors to decide on survey budgets; lower ones may generate unusable results and higher ones are costly. Therefore, a method to evaluate and improve survey accuracy without increasing (and possibly even lowering) cost could be highly beneficial. In this paper, an analytical model is built to determine the effects of survey budget on survey accuracy in a systematic and generalized way. The relationship between the survey budget, the estimated average parking duration (i.e., the survey result), and the survey error is illustrated through dimensional analysis. On the basis of this analysis, objective criteria are found to evaluate patrol surveys, a budget test is provided to find the optimal survey budget, and a correction method is proposed to improve survey accuracy. Moreover, simulations are run on the basis of more realistic assumptions, so that the conclusions from the analytical model can be extended to real life situations. The model is well validated with real parking data. An example application is also provided that illustrates how to use the proposed approaches to choose a survey budget and to improve survey accuracy. It is hoped that this study will help surveyors to better understand patrol surveys and obtain high-quality results, while keeping costs to a minimum.

Abstract:Based on the double object-function constraints of parking guidance and traffic flow control, optimization model of parking guidance coordinated with traffic flow control was constructed. Under restrictive conditions, such as spare parking saturation and traffic flow saturation of road segment, the hierarchy search model was established to confirm the initialized results. Sequence of initial spare project was studied by fuzzy algorithm. The original results of each spare park were standardized through subordinate function. The optimized results were got through the close rate between the spare project and standard project. At last, the model was validated by an example of parking section in central city of Tongling of Anhui Province. It shows that the model can be applied successfully.

Abstract:In this paper the necessity and importance of the studying on the problem of parking is analyzed first, then aiming at the parking problem that exists in China, the main reasons is concluded in four aspects: no adequate parking supply is in a certain area, illegal parking is very familiar in the city, the parking plan can not be ensured to be implemented in actual, and existing parking lots are not well used. After reviewing the parking demand predicting method for the parking planning at present, comparing the application scope of each method and analyzing the advantage and disadvantage of each method, and on the basis of above work, the basic parking planning idea and the method of parking planning which was suitable for China is put forward. In the end of the paper a concrete city -XiaoShan is chosen as a typical case to make a deep study.

Abstract:The demand for parking spaces in city centers often exceeds the supply. The spatial distribution of such spaces is uneven, which leads to the overheating of hot parking lots. To balance existing conflicts, parking charge and reservation mechanisms are usually utilized to improve the overall efficiency of parking spaces. This study aims to analyze and compare the benefits of these instruments and provide operational suggestions for urban parking managers. To achieve this goal, we introduce an agent simulation system and construct a simulation framework of parking charge and reservation. Then, the average travel time and total parking space utilization time are combined as a comprehensive benefit with different weights, and the benefits of parking charge and reservation are analyzed and compared under the corresponding weight. Parking charge and reservation are considered comprehensively in a combined simulation example. Results show that parking charge and reservation can remarkably improve the comprehensive benefit, and parking charge can achieve the maximum comprehensive benefit when the fee is high. When the fee is low, such as less than 26 yuan/h, the reservation mechanism can achieve a good level of benefit. Thus, parking reservation in most cities in China is an effective means to manage popular parking lots when the parking fee is low and difficult to increase.

Abstract:Parking demand exceeding parking supply and uneven parking demand distribution are the existing conflicts in city centers. Parking pricing is frequently utilized to manage parking resources. This study aims to assess different parking pricing strategies through simulations for providing operational suggestions for urban parking managers. Two widely used parking pricing strategies in China combined with an optimized parking pricing strategy are proposed and compared. We introduce an agent-based simulation system to describe the parking and traffic conditions. Various measures of effectiveness under different parking pricing strategies can be obtained via agent-based simulations. We then construct a comprehensive benefit combining average cost and failure rate. Results show that the second strategy with charging different parking fees by considering locations and third optimized strategy can effectively improve traffic efficiency. However, the second strategy may lead to higher average cost than that of the third one. Thus, the third optimized strategy performs the best and can be used to optimize the parking policy of parking managers in the future. The entire assessment through simulations can provide evaluation suggestions for parking managers to adjust parking policies.

Abstract:Parking network, a specified complex network, is proposed to model, simulate, and analyse the failure process of urban parking systems in this paper. This model is applied to the analysis of parking systems in an abstract city grid and the downtown area of Luohu, Shenzhen. The results demonstrate that the parking network can capture subtle variations among various parking cruising behaviours or strategies from a network perspective. Spread of parking difficulty can be regarded as a special cascading failure process of urban parking systems. A comprehensive understanding of this process can be greatly helpful to build a more robust parking system. Parking network, a specified complex network, is proposed to model, simulate, and analyse the failure process of urban parking systems in this paper. This model is applied to the analysis of parking systems in an abstract city grid and the downtown area of Luohu, Shenzhen. The results demonstrate that the parking network can capture subtle variations among various parking cruising behaviours or strategies from a network perspective. Abstract:In order to alleviate the contradiction between supply and demand of urban parking, and improve the efficiency of parking facilities, the characteristics including time-varied occupancy, entrance, and exit properties, parking duration in different types of land are analyzed based on the parking shared parking theory using traffic survey data in Nanjing. The results reveal that there is a difference on parking occupancy rate of different types of land in at different times. At the same time, using the dynamic changing regularity of the vehicle, sharing windows in different types of land are obtained. Additionally, the features of long-term and short-term parking of different land use are also achieved through the analysis of the characteristics of parking duration. It provides the basis for the decision-making of sharing window, sharing interval, and duration of different land use.

Abstract:In this paper, 24 parking lots in different areas of Beijing city were selected as the sample. First, a field survey was carried out for the basic information of parking lot and the land, transportation, economy and population of influence region, with seven evaluation indexes of land development intensity, traffic location potential, public transport accessibility, public transport service level, number of parking lots, house price and population density being selected, and their index value was calculated respectively according to the data of field survey. Second, the weight of each index was determined using the entropy method, and the evaluation model was established, and the division of influence region of parking lot based on development intensity was obtained, including three grades from small to large.

Abstract:<p>Recently, we see an increasing number of vehicles coming into our lives, which makes finding car parks a difficult task. To overcome this challenge, efficient and advanced parking techniques are required, such as finding the proper parking slot, increasing users' experience, dynamic path planning and congestion avoidance. To this end, this survey provides a detailed overview starting from Smart Parking (SP) towards the emerging Autonomous Valet Parking (AVP) techniques. Specially, the SP includes digitally enhanced parking, smart routing, high density parking and vacant slot detection solutions. Moreover, the AVP involves Short-range Autonomous Valet Parking (SAVP) and Long-range Autonomous Valet Parking (LAVP). Finally, open issues and future work are provided.</p>

Abstract:In China, more and more families own cars, and parking is also undergoing a revolution from manual to automatic charging. In the process of parking revolution, understanding parking behavior and making an effective prediction is important for parking companies and municipal policymakers. We obtain real parking data from a big parking company for parking behavior analysis and prediction. The dataset comes from a shopping mall in Ningbo, Zhejiang, and it consists of 136,973 records in 396 days. Specifically, we mainly explore the impact of weather factors on parking behavior. We study several models, and find that the random forest model can make the most accurate parking behavior prediction. Experiments show that the random forest model can reach 89% accuracy.

Abstract:Nowadays, urban parking circumstances are becoming more and more challenging. To solve this problem, many methods have been proposed, such as infrastructure expansion, economic leverage and technical theory. However, these solutions are generally used independently, thus it is infeasible to solve all existing problems. Therefore, a novel and revolutionary solution is urgently required. In this paper, we first comprehensively investigate the background of parking difficulties, and find that all of the current existing solutions are not able to meet the requirements of dynamic, systematization, high efficiency and accuracy. Then we briefly introduce the parallel theory, and propose the intelligent parking system based on the parallel theory, which can provide a systematic intelligent solution to meet the needs of current parking systems. The parallel parking system is made up of three parts, including the artificial system, the computational experiments, and the parallel execution. The proposed parallel parking system not only provides a novel direction to solve the parking problem, but also is an important guidance for the specific implementation of parallel parking theory.

Abstract:Automated valet parking (AVP) contributes to the reduction in the shortage of the parking resources, which has a significant impact on the efficiency of city transportation. However, in the current situation most AVP systems are implemented through vehicle-based intelligence approaches, leading to not only the problem of high cost in onboard sensor installation but also less global parking efficiency. Therefore, recent research works focusing on infrastructure-based AVP system have become a popular direction. The information of all vehicles is obtained so that the parking of each vehicle can be considered from a global perspective. This paper aims at proposing an intelligent Parking Dispatch System (PDS) to systematically tackle these issues. The PDS is developed to allocate parking space of each vehicle, generate vehicle trajectory to the parking space, compute control commands and also take care of potential collisions and conflicts. The target of this system is to minimize the average waiting time. A simulation platform has been developed to validate the system on the basis of a existent parking lot. The experiment results have shown that the PDS can achieve a high efficiency in coordinating the vehicles in the parking lot.

Abstract:Parking has been a painful problem for urban drivers. The parking pain exacerbates as more people tend to live in cities in the context of global urbanization. Thus, it is demanding to find a solution to mitigate d rivers' parking headaches. Many solutions tried to resolve the parking issue by predicting parking occupancy. Their focuses were on the accuracy of the theoretical side but lacked a standardized model to evaluate these proposals in practice. This paper develops a Driver Side and Traffic Based Evaluation Model (DSTBM), which provides a general evaluation scheme for different parking solutions. Two common parking detection methods, fixed sensing and mobile sensing are analyzed using DSTBM. The results indicate first, DSTBM examines different solutions from the driver's perspective and has no conflicts with other evaluation schemes; second, DSTBM confirms that fixed sensing performs better than mobile sensing in terms of prediction accuracy.
