Abstract:Poly(succinimide)(PSI) was synthesized by polycondensation of L-aspartic acid in a solvent.The effects of the catalyst,reaction time and solvent on the reaction were studied.The molecular weight of PSI was determined by GPC,and the structures were confirmed by FTIR and~1H NMR.

Abstract:Using the tetrahydrofuran (THF) as solvent and 40% benzyl trimethyl ammonium hydroxide methanol solution as catalyst, the octaphenyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane ((C6H5)8T8) was synthesized via the hydrolytic condensation of phenyltrichlorosilane. The obtained (C6H5)8T8 was proved to be precise and pure by FT-IR and 29Si-NMR; then with the help of aqueous tetraethyl ammonium hydroxide (TEAOH) and using the THF as solvent, via the corner-opening reaction; the synthesized (C6H5)8T8 was reacted into the incompletely condensed POSS. In order to suppress the by-product reactions, the corner-opening reaction temperature, time and the amount of catalyst used should be well controlled. The structure of the corner-opening reaction product was determined and validated by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, FT-IR, elementary analysis and MALDI-TOF MS. The results indicate that the main product of the corner-opening reaction is heptaphenyltrisilanol-POSS, and its initial decomposing temperature analyzed by TGA is 516.1℃ (5%(wt) weight loss), which suggests that the obtained heptaphenyltrisilanol-POSS has good thermal stability. Compared with literature works, the reaction time of this work is much shorter and thus the yield is increased, which would make the POSS be more useful in the syntheses of organic-inorganic hybrid materials.
Amphiphilic Hexylamine Modified Polysuccinimide: Synthesis, Characterization, and Formation of Nanoparticles in Aqueous Medium

Abstract:A series of hexylamine modified polysuccinimide (PSI-HA) copolymers were synthesized by aminolysis of polysuccinimide (PSI) with hexylamine. FTIR and H-1 NMR measurements confirmed the structure of the copolymers and the substitution degree of the N-hexyl aspartamide units ranged from 7 to 92 mol%. Stable nanoparticles formed when the DMF solution of PSI-HA copolymers was dropped into excess water, and the particle size reduced as increasing the substitution degree. H-1 NMR analysis indicated that hexyl chain and succinimide units interacted to form the hydrophobic core, while, the nanoparticles were stabilized by the amide groups which formed hydrogen bonds with the surrounding water molecules. The nanoparticles became more compact at higher temperature due to the break of hydrogen bonds between amide groups and water molecules. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed that the nanoparticles were nearly spherical. Larger nanoparticles formed when the dispersion concentration increased from 0.1% to 1.0% according to the DLS and steady-state fluorescence measurements. After the nanoparticles formed in water, a sequential dilution can't influence the particles size of the nanoparticles any longer.

Abstract:A well-defined amphiphilic centipede-like copolymer of styrene and methacrylic acid (PS-PS-PMAA) was synthesized by the combination of living anionic polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The synthetic approach involves the first coupling reaction of polystyrene (PS) backbone bearing 1,1-diphenylethene (DPE) pendant groups with living polystyryllithium (PSLi), and sequential anionic polymerization of t-butyl methacrylate (tBMA) initiated by resulting 1,1-diphenylmethyl anion, and final hydrolysis of obtained PS-PS-PtBMA. The centipede-like copolymer PS-PS-PMAA was characterized by 1H NMR, IR, GPC, and SLS measurements. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of PS-PS-PMAA in water was determined by fluorescence probe technique. The self-assembly behavior of PS-PS-PMAA in water-THF mixture was observed by TEM. The results showed that the micellar morphology can be varied, such as vesicle, sphere, and agglomerate, depending on the THF content. These phenomena are worthy of further research in polymer physics field.
Polycondensation of L-aspartic Acid under Microwave Irradiation

Abstract:The polycondensation of L-aspartic acid (A) was conducted in a mixed solvent of sulpholane and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene with phosphoric acid (φ=85%) as catalyst, using microwave irradiation. The effects of varying the dosage of phosphoric acid catalyst, microwave power, reaction temperature and time on the yield, average molecular weight and molecular weight distribution (MWD, Mw/Mn) of the resulting polymer products, poly(succinimide) (PSI) and poly(aspartic acid), was investigated. The product polymers, were characterized by FT-IR. The results indicated that, compared with the traditional method, under microwave irradiation the polymerization time could be significantly reduced from 3-5 h to 20 min, and the reaction temperature (170-200 ℃) required was also reduced. The yield and molecular weight increased with increasing reaction temperature and time. All the GPC traces of the poly(aspartic acid) products obtained with different concentrations of catalyst exhibited narrow and unimodal molecular weight distributions with number-average molecular weight (Mn) from 6000 to 20000 and polydispersity from 1.3 to 2.4.

Abstract:For the purpose of increasing the hydrophilicity of poly aspartic acid, a series of polymer of L-aspartic acid and 4-aminobutanoic acid with different ratios (mol/mol) were prepared. The copolymers were characterized by 13CNMR, DSC and x-ray. The confirmed the structures of the polymers. In-vitro tests of release at phosphate buffer saline, enzyme solution of trypsin and papain (37.0 degrees C, pH = 7.4) were carried out. The result indicated that the polymers could be degraded in some degree, and that 4-aminobutanoic acid segments accelerated the degradation rate of the polymers. Skin irritation test and systemic acute toxicity test were carried out, which showed that the polymer was a nontoxic biomedical material.

Abstract:Polysuccinimide(PSI) was prepared from DL-aspartic acid visa microwave.The power and time of microwave to solid-phase polycondensation were studied.A kind of biodegradable poly(scccinimide) hydrogel was obtained by using different functionality of the amino polyether to open-loop crosslinking polysuccinimide under microwave.The influence of the content of polyether on swelling was investigated in detail.The results show that the microwave can rapidly promote DL-aspartic acid synthesized polysuccinicimide.

Abstract:Non-ionic water-soluble poly-DL-serine (PSer) was synthesized from an activated urethane-type derivative of serine. SEC, NMR and MALDI-ToF analyses of the polypeptides revealed a controllable polymerization initiated by primary or secondary amines. PSer exhibited excellent solubility in water when the ratios of L-serine/D-serine units ranged from 5/5 to 8/2.

Abstract:In the emulsion polymerization process, organic polymers carrying functional groups are involved in the elaboration of the hybrid latex in order to improve the chemical bonding between the organic and inorganic components. The organic-inorganic hybrid nanoparticles were synthesized by using 3-trimethoxysilyl propyl methacrylate (MPS) in the authors' work. In the emulsion polymerization process of MPS and styrene, SiOR groups are hydrolyzed and condensed simultaneously with free radical polymerization when they contact with water. The emulsion stability and the organic-inorganic hybrid microstructures are largely dependent on the hydrolysis-condensation rates, and the competition between free radical polymerization rate and hydrolysis-condensation rate determines the final microstructure of the hybrid materials. Hydrolysis-condensation rate coefficients were measured at different pH values by 29Si liquid-state NMR. It was found that the hydrolysis rate coefficient was the lowest when pH = 7.0, and increased significantly in both acidic and basic conditions, while the condensation rate coefficient was the lowest when pH = 4.0. An equation was presented to estimate the hydrolysis and condensation rate coefficients at different pH values.

Abstract:Functionalized PS/SiO2 composite nanoparticles bearing sulfonic groups on the surface were successfully synthesized via emulsion copolymerization using a polymerizable emulsifier a olefin solfonate (AOS). As demonstrated by transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, well-defined core-shell PS/SiO2 composite nanoparticles with a diameter of 50 nm were obtained. Sulfonic groups introduced onto the surface of the composite nanoparticles were quantified by FTIR, and can be controlled to some extent via a two-stage procedure.

Abstract:It has been a challenge to synthesize thiol-functionalized polyacetylenes because of the poisoning effect of mercapto group on the early transition-metal catalysts. Rhodium complexes such as [Rh(cod)Cl](2) can catalyze the polymerizations but the products are insoluble and intractable. In this work, we tackled this challenge. Sulfur-containing polyacetylenes with macroscopic processability were successfully synthesized by separating thiol pendant from polyene backbone with a flexible spacer (in PI), capping free mercapto group with acetyl or alkyl group (in P2 or P3), and using a zwitterionic complex Rh+[eta(6)-C6H5(nbd)B-(C6H5)(3)] as catalyst. The soluble polymers were characterized by NMR, IR, UV, PL, and TGA analyses. Due to the specific interactions between thiol group and zinc cation, ZnO nanoparticles were chemisorbed onto the surfaces of polymer films, as verified by AFM analysis. Polymer P2 and ZnO nanoparticles could be readily hybridized by simply mixing the two components in an organic solvent such as chloroform, THF, or DMF. SEM images revealed that the morphology of the film cast from the solution of the P2/ZnO hybrid was dominated by well-dispersed nanoparticles and smooth surface.

Abstract:Isotactic rich polystyrene was synthesized at 30 degrees C by the t-BuLi initiated polymerization in the presence of sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) in hexane or cyclohexane. The polymerization rates at 30 degrees C were very fast and typically gave quantitative conversions. At SDBS/t-BuLi molar ratios between 0.5 and 1.0, the unfractionated polystyrene had almost the same stereoregularity. with triad and pentad contents of about 45% and 19%, respectively. The polymers could be fractionated into a more isotactic PS (mm = 0.77) and other fractions with lower isotactic content. The influence on the stereochemistry of lithium and potassium dodecylbenzenesulfonates or other sulfonate derivatives, reaction temperature and solvent have also been investigated. Density functional theory (DFT) was used to simulate the reactive sites using 1-lithio-1,3-diphenylbutane and 4-methylbenzenesulfonate (SBS) were used as simplified models of polystyryllithium and SDBS respectively. DFT calculation results indicated that unlike the simpler LDPB model and LDPB-styrene complexes, the pro-m-SBS-LDPB-styrene complexes were the preferred stereochemical configuration consistent with the formation of long isotactic pentad sequences. Abstract:α,α'-Dimercapto-succinic acid was prepared by a simple synthesis involving the addition of thioacetic acid to the disodium salt of acetylene dicarboxylic acid (tetrahydrate), in the presence of dilute sulphuric acid (36.2%) and with pyridine as catalyst, followed by hydrolysis of the resulting addition compound. The disodium salt of acetylene dicarboxylic acid (tetrahydrate) was obtained from dibromosuccinic acid by treating the latter with an excess of concentrated sodium hydroxide solution.

Abstract:Novel polyaspartimides were successfully synthesized via Michael addition reactions involving phosphorus-containing diamines and bismaleimides as monomers and using p-toluenesulfonic acid and N-N-dimethylacetamide as a catalyst and a solvent, respectively. The yields of the polymerization and the molecular weights and inherent viscosities of the polymers increased with the increasing monomers' concentrations, with an upper limit of 0.92mol/l. All of the obtained polymers were soluble in organic solvents and showed high glass transition temperatures of 227–256°C, good thermal stability of 360–427°C, high char yields of 53–64% in nitrogen and 25–46% in air at 700°C.

Abstract:N-phenylmaleimide/styrene/acrylonitrile/ɑmethylstyrene emulsion copolymerization was studied using solium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) as emulsifier and potassium persulfate(KPS) as initiator.The effects of monomers ratio,reaction temperature,emulsifier and initiator concentration on the rate of copolymerization were investigated.It showed that the overall observed copolymerization activation energy of the system was 84.14kJ/mol;and the rate of copolymerization was positively proportion to the concentration of emulsifier to the power of 0.46 and to the concentration of initiator t the power of 0.57.For the emulsion copolymerization, the suitable reaction condition were: polymerizing for 1h at 75℃,aging for 2h at 85 ℃,SDS 8.4 mmol/L and KPS 1.8 mmol/L.The mole fracion of ɑ-methylstyrene had a great influence on the reaction rate, should be controlled under 20%mol.

Abstract:Two series of biodegradable amphiphilic copolymers, poly(succinimide-co-N-propyl aspartamide) (PSI-PA) and poly(N-dodecyl aspartamide-co-N-propyl aspartamide) (PDDA-PA) were synthesized by partial and total aminolysis of polysuccinimide (PSI), respectively. PSI-PA copolymers could self-aggregate in water directly under ultrasonication at room temperature. Differing from PSI-PA copolymers, the aggregates of PDDA-PA need to add PDDA-PA DMF solution into an excessive amount of water. The aggregative properties of PSI-PA and PDDA-PA copolymers have been investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and surface tension measurements. Hydrophilicity of these two copolymers was attributed to the N-propyl aspartamide segments. Due to the stiff structure, succinimide segments preferred to form irregular hydrophobic microdomains, and some aggregates of PSI-PA are bimodal size distribution in water medium, while the more flexible PDDA-PA copolymer chains preferred to form monodispersed spherical aggregates. Elevated temperature could reduce the aggregate size of both PSI-PA and PDDA-PA copolymers due to the breaking of the hydrogen bonding and the releasing of the bonded water molecules. PSI-PA copolymers were surface active, while the surface tension of PDDA-PA copolymers was independent on concentration. The drug-loaded aggregates of PSI-PA also have been prepared and the preliminary release properties have been studied in vitro.

Abstract:A new class of biodegradable polyampholytes, poly[(aspartic acid)-co-lysine], were synthesized by thermal polycondensation of aspartic acid and lysine under reduced pressure and subsequent hydrolysis. Polymerization conditions were optimized to yield maximal water-soluble poly(succinimide-co-lysine) with high molecular weight (160°C/3.5 h). The succinimide/lysine ratio in the polyampholytes could be adjusted by their feed ratio. Characterization of the poly(succinimide-co-lysine) by 1H NMR revealed that ω-amine and carboxylic groups in lysine participated in the polymerization, leaving α-amino groups as pendant cationic moieties.
Synthesis and inhibition performance of a polymer-supported inhibitor

Abstract:The synthesis of a polymer-supported inhibitor (PSI) and its inhibition performance for free-radical polymerization are reported for the first time. A special method has been devised to synthesize PSI with pure and abundant hydroquinone (HQ) groups anchored onto the polymer surface. A thin HQ/acetone (AC) solution is sandwiched between two polymer films. Under ultraviolet irradiation, AC as an photoinitiator quickly and effectively grafts HQ onto the polymer surface. PSI has been characterized with ultraviolet-visible and attenuated total reflectance/Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. For potential applications, PSI has been used to inhibit the thermal polymerization of styrene and methyl methacrylate. The corresponding inhibition performance has been investigated through the measurement of the induction period with the dilatometer method. With the same absolute amount, the maximum inhibition ability of PSI approaches half that of a free inhibitor. Increasing the dispersion degree of PSI is favorable for the enhancement of the inhibition ability. (C) 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:A series of polyesters PBSBS,poly(butylene succinate-co-butylene phenylsuccinate),were synthesized from the polycondensation of succinic acid and phenylsuccinic acid with 1,4-butanediol.The compositions and thermal properties of resulted homopolyesters and copolyesters were investigated by()~1H-NMR,differential scanning calorimetry(DSC)and X-ray diffraction.The results suggested that the introduction of the comonomer containing a phenyl side-group led to a change in thermal properties and crystallization behavior.The glass transition temperature increased with the increasing of the comonomer composition,while the equilibrium melting temperature obtained by the Hoffman-Weeks plot decreased significantly.Furthermore,an Avrami method was used to analyze the kinetics of isothermal crystallization of PBS and PBSBS-10.The Avrami exponents,estimated by Avrami plots,ranging from 2.8 to 3.0 for PBS and 2.7 to 2.9 for PBSBS-10,indicated that the mechanism of crystallization for both homopolyester and copolyester was a tridimensional growth with heterogeneous nucleation.Meanwhile,X-ray diffraction showed that there was almost no effect of the phenyl succinate unit on the crystal structure.

Abstract:The copolycondensation of L-aspartic acid (A) and L-glutamic acid (G) was conducted in sulpholane, 1, 3, 5-trimethyl benzene or mixtures of these solvents. The effects of varying the dosage of the phosphoric acid catalyst, monomer ratios, solvent ratios, reaction temperature and time on yield, molecular weight and average molecular weight distribution (M̄w/M̄n, MWD)·of the polymer products were investigated. The yield and molecular weight were found to increase with increasing concentration of phosphoric acid, proportion of 1, 3, 5-trimethyl benzene in the mixed solvent, reaction temperature or time. L-aspartic acid is more reactive than L-glutamic acid and the molecular weight of the copolymer increases with increasing monomer ratio of A to G. The GPC traces of the copolymers of L-aspartic acid and L-glutamic acid (PAG) obtained with different monomer ratios exhibit unimodal narrow distributions with number-average molecular weight (M̄n) in the range of 6000 to 11900 and polydispersity in the range of 1.34 to 1.87.

Abstract:Polysuccinimide (abridged as PSI) was synthesized by urea and maleic anhydride. Aminobenzenesulfonic acid (ABSA) was introduced at different mole ratio to PSI to generate polyaspartic acid (abridged as PASP)/ABSA graft copolymer. The scale inhibition behavior of resultant PASP/ABSA copolymer was evaluated by using static scale inhibition method. The transmittance of the supernatant of the copolymer solution was measured to evaluate its dispersion ability for ferric oxide. The corrosion inhibition performance of the copolymer for iron plates immersed in the refined testing water (including 0.555 g of CaCl2 2H2O, 0.493 g of MgSO4 7H2O, 50 mg PASP/ABSA graft copolymer and 0.168 g of NaCl) was tested. It was found that PASP/ABSA copolymer was able to efficiently inhibit CaCO3 and Ca3(PO4)2 scales and had good corrosion inhibition ability as well, and it also had good dispersion ability for Fe2O3. Besides, the inhibition efficiency of PASP/ABSA against CaCO3 and Ca3(PO4)2 scales and its dispersion capacity for Fe2O3 was highly dependent on dosage. The reason may lie in that PASP/ABSA copolymer simultaneously possesses carboxylic ion and sulfonic group which can chelate Ca2+ to form stabilized and dissoluble chelates, resulting in increase of solubility of calcium salts in water. Also it may lie in that the introduction of acidic hydrophilic sulfonic group with a strong electrolytic capacity into PASP molecule simultaneously enhances the dispersion of the inhibitor molecules and hinders the formation of Ca3(PO4)2 scale.
