Abstract:The paper proposes a method of the piecewise water distribution of main canal according to the characteristic of irrigation canal in mountainous area. Theoretical analysis and case calculation are carried out for the water distribution of main canal under the condition of that the available water flow is sufficient and insufficient respectively. Abstract:Since the river network in plain areas is complex,it is important to lay out hydrological station network in a scientific and appropriate way.Through analysis and evaluation on hydrological station network and measurement methods in Hangzhou-Jiaxing-Huzhou plain areas and in the light of existing problems,we proposed that the lay out of hydrological station network in plain areas should take comprehensive consideration on various elements,including flood control and drainage,watershed management,water resources management,water volume and quality monitoring at provincial boundary,water volume balance,etc.It also presents that water volume monitoring should take the method of combining single discharge stations,base stations and hydrometric tour gauging.Doppler flow measurement method has been successfully applied in a number of tidal influenced rivers,and is worth promoting.
Study on the Coupling Relationship between Landscape pattern and Water Environment Quality Based on GIS - A Case Study of the Jinghang Grant Canal (Hongzhou Section)

Abstract:In this paper, a case study on the spatial and temporal variation characteristics of water environment quality in the Jinghang Grant Canal (Hongzhou Section) and coupling relationship between the landscape pattern and water environment quality is carried out based on the Land sat TM image of remote sensing and GIS platform, combining environmental quality monitoring and statistic sampling data of Hangzhou city. Quantitative research shows that: (1) The analysis data of water quality in 11 monitoring sections of the Jinghang Grant Canal (Hangzhou section) shows that the water quality is aggravating from south to north; (2) Based on A value evaluation method, the water quality analysis shows that there are 6 monitoring sections in 11 monitoring sections of the Jinghang Grant Canal (Hangzhou section) under the pollution standard, including 4 secondary pollution above monitoring sections, accounting for 36.4% of the total; (3) The study on the relationship between landscape structure components and water quality factor shows that the water landscape has a significant influence on water quality, but agricultural water is opposites, building landscape has a negative influence with water, but no significant; (4) Research shows that most indices of the landscape pattern have not significant relationship with water environmental quality, but the new building indices, such as RACW and RAW, have significant relationship with water environmental quality.; (5) Studies show that landscape pattern has a strong effect on water environment quality, which can provide theoretical basis for relevant studies. But the coupling mechanism is further research.

Abstract:The healthy and sustainable development of irrigation area not only serves as the guarantee of national food production security, but also shoulders the important task of regional ecological security, in which maintaining groundwater level plays an important role. Due to the close relationship between groundwater level and irrigation recharge groundwater, realizing rational use of water resources under strictly implementing the total limit of water use and holding reasonable groundwater level is of great significance to the healthy development of irrigated areas. Therefore, this study established a spatial-temporal optimal allocation regulation method of irrigation water resources by coupling groundwater numerical technology and the characteristics of hydrological cycle with comprehensively considering the dual constraints between total water consumption and reasonable groundwater depth. Besides, taking Helan County, a typical area of Qingtongxia Irrigation district in Ningxia as an example, a case study on optimal allocation of irrigation water resources was carried out. The results show that compared with the actual current water use situation, the total irrigation water shortage rate of Helan County Irrigation District (HCID) decreases from 21.61% to 21%. Under the combined control of total available water and groundwater depths, it is realized the fairness and balance of water use in different regions and periods by the allocation of water resources in spatial and temporal. Meanwhile, the area located in the reasonable groundwater depth range increased by 1.65% after optimization. Overall, the balanced and optimal allocation method of irrigation water resources with both total water use and groundwater depth control is not only improving the efficient and rational utilization of limited water resources, but also can regulate groundwater depth to guarantee regional ecological health and sustainable development.
Study on Method for Predicting Amount of Water Gushing in Tunnel

Abstract:Based on the basic principles of 6 calculation methods for predicting amount of water gushing in tunnel,the calculation approaches,formulae and suitable conditions are discussed.The predicting water gushing with appropriate calculation method is helpful to make both the early warning and the construction countermeasure concerned.Taking a water diversion project in Hangzhou as a case,the amount of water gushing in the section with the stake number from 6+331 to 6+360 is predicted with water-balance method and groundwater dynamics method,and the amount of water gushing in the section with the stake number from 1+885 to 1+905 is predicted with hydrogeologic analogy method as well.Through the comparison with the actual measured amount,it is demonstrated that the error of the predicting value is less,and then provides a better technical support for the smooth implementation of the project.The study shows that all the 6 predicting methods have their own advantages and shortcomings;and then better predicting effect can be obtained,only if they are applied under their suitable conditions.
Optimization of Water Head Allocation for Large-Scale Water Diversion Project

Abstract:It is a crucial issue to reasonably allocate overall water head to each section for a large-scale water diversion project during the period of project design. In this paper, principle and method is proposed to optimally allocate water head for large-scale water diversion projects through theoretical analysis and numerical computation as well as impact factors and their sensitivities analysis. Through using the proposed method to allocate the overall water head, velocity in the canal of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (Middle Line) could be stable. At the same time, the water power loss for the whole line could be minimal.

Abstract:Due to the importance and complexity of water resources regulations in the pond irrigation systems of the Jiang-Huai hilly regions, a water allocation simulation model for pond irrigation districts based on system simulation theory was developed in this study. To maximize agricultural irrigation benefits while guaranteeing rural domestic water demand, an optimal water resources regulation model for pond irrigation districts and a simulation-based optimal water resources regulation technology system for the pond irrigation system were developed. Using this system, it was determined that the suitable pond coverage rate (pond capacity per unit area) was 2.92 × 105 m3/km2. Suitable water supply and operational rules for adjusting crop planting structure were also developed the water-saving irrigation method and irrigation system. To guarantee rural domestic water demand, the multi-year average total irrigation water deficit of the study area decreased by 4.66 × 104 m3/km2; the average multi-year water deficit ratio decreased from 20.40% to 1.18%; the average multi-year irrigation benefit increased by 1.11 × 105 RMB (16,128$)/km2; and the average multi-year revenue increased by 6.69%. Both the economic and social benefits were significant. The results of this study provide a theoretical basis and technological support for comprehensive pone governance in the Jiang-Huai hilly regions and promote the establishment of a water allocation scheme and irrigation system for pond irrigation districts, which have practical significance and important application value.

A Study of Ecological Water Requirement and Efficiency of Water Allocation Based on Oasis Irrigation Area Scale: A Case of Middle Reaches of Heihe River

Abstract:Based on many data sources, such as basic geographic information, land use and cover information and statistic data of irrigation areas, the authors picked agricultural irrigation areas in the middle reaches of Heihe river as a study area and analyzed the spatial-temporal distributions of ecological water requirement with Penman-Monteith equation and NDVI data. Considering the real water diversion and consumption per unit grain yield, the efficiency of water allocation was also analyzed. The results show that the annual potential evapotranspiration is between 800 and 1200 mm and the peak occurs between June and August. Average annual potential evapotrans-piration is between 614 and 999 mm while maximum of demand appears from April to August. Ecological water requirement reduces from southeast to northwest gradually which is relatively larger along the Heihe river. Ground water plays major role in water diversion while underground water is minor. The yield of water diversion is the largest in 2008 and irrigation areas which have more water diversions flock around the Heihe river. Overall, water resource allocation overthere is fair good. Water supply-demand rate around Heihe river is generally greater than 1 while it is opposite in Shandan and Minle. Nearly 80% of the irrigation areas can be considered as efficient or relative efficient regions. There are four irrigation districts are inefficient and only one is short of water diversion. Therefore, adjustment of water diversion in some certain regions with promotion of water saving technology can enhance the efficiency of water allocation roundly. The results provide feasible reference to improve the efficiency of water allocation in arid area.

Abstract:Water scarcity has been a critical constraint to economic development in semi-arid areas of China, so optimizing irrigation scheduling has become essential. This study obtained quantitative relationships between crop yield, crop water consumption, and irrigation quantity based on the Hydrus-2D and Stewart models. Different irrigation scheduling scenarios were evaluated to obtain the best irrigation scheduling based on the principle of simultaneous water conservation and crop productivity improvement with the evaluation indicators of crop yield, water use efficiency (WUE), irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE), and Critic-Topsis method. Taking drip irrigation under mulch as an example, the problem of optimizing the irrigation scheduling for different typical years was calculated. The optimization results showed that in the wet, normal, dry, and very dry years the annual irrigation quantity should be 49.68 mm, 49.68 mm, 85.38 mm, and 123.72 mm, when the WUE as well as IWUE, increases significantly, which had less impact on the crop yield and can save irrigation quantity by 30.00%, 30.00%, 35.00%, 27.00%. This study used Hydrus-2D to make a new attempt in irrigation scheduling optimization, giving full play to the model's high accuracy in soil water transport simulation and flexibility in boundary condition simulation. The optimization results can provide a reference for achieving accurate control of irrigation quantity during the crop growth period and reasonable irrigation scheduling formulation for regional crops.
Coupling Analysis on the Crop Irrigation Water Requirements of Huanghuaihai Plain and the Potential Yield of Cultivated Land

Abstract:Based on the site-based meteorological data in 1991 and 2000, the irrigation water requirements of cultivated land was estimated, the regional differences were explored and the changes from 1991 to 2000 were analyzed using the GIS methodologies. Then the potential yield of cultivated land was calculated based on the AEZ-China model. By the coupling analysis, the positive correlation between the irrigation water requirements and the potential yield of cultivated land was explored. So the irrigation water requirements was a constrain factor on the potential yield of cultivated land in the Huanghuaihai plain now. The result laid the referrences for reasonably using water resources of Huanghuaihai plain and drawing scientific decision on enhancing water efficiency.

Abstract:There are plenty of natural water resources in the mountainous areas of Japan,but it is difficulty to develop and utilize the water resources because of the limitation of the climate and topographical condition.In order to enhance the development and utilization rate of water resources in these areas,it is necessary to study on developing small-scale or miniature hydraulic engineering.The different structures and diverse types of mountain stream diversion works which were developed in the recent several dozens of years in Japan are introduced,the characteristics of structure and water intake of bar-screen typed mountain stream diversion works which are widely applied in sandy rivers in the areas,as well as the pattern of water resources development and utilization that is based on the groups of mountain stream diversion works and reservoirs are reviewed comprehensively.It is suitable for the water resources development and utilization in the similar mountainous areas of China.
Numerical Analysis of the Effect of the Different Lower Boundary Conditions on Water Drainage in Irrigated Field

Abstract:The effect of three different lower boundary conditions(free drainage,pressure head and fixed ground water table) on water drainage in irrigated field is studied using the numerical simulations based on the field data in Quzhou County on North China Plain.The water drainage in 2?m soil profile is calculated by the HYDRUS-1D model from October 1998 to September 2001.When the fixed ground water table is selected as the lower boundary condition,the soil water content at different depth in 2?m soil profile is calculated by the HYDRUS-1D model,which agreeds well with the measured values,however,when taking free drainage and pressure head as the lower boundary condition,the difference exists between the measured and the simulated values.In comparison with the result of dynamic water drainage and accumulated water drainage estimated by using the Darcy law,we found that their dynamic process of water drainage by using the fixed ground water table agreed well with that of the Darcy Law.Therefore,the fixed ground water table being selected as the lower boundary condition is suitable for the local conditions.

Abstract:In this paper a multi-level analysis platform of ecological water operation is established.The platform has three components,a model of macro-economic water resources allocation,a model of ecological water operation and a model of water quantity-quality coupling simulation.These models aim at predicting the socio-economic water demand,coordinating the guarantee rates of socio-economic water use and ecological water use,and analyzing the impact of ecological water operation on the water environments.A case study of multi-objective water optimization of Huaihe River shows that in the present project condition an adjust in the preference of water operation can effectively improve the guarantee rate of ecological water use,and that in the future the construction of new reservoirs can increase the capacity of socio-economic and ecological water supply.

Abstract:Tunnel excavation in mountainous region frequently encounters high local inflows as a consequence of hydraulic head and multiple faults geology, which may adversely affect the serviceability of tunnel structures. Previous researches, however, paid very little attention to the seepage field of rocks around deep buried tunnels adjacent to water-bearing faults under high hydraulic head. In this paper, a new close-form analytical method is proposed to investigate the combined effect of high far-field hydraulic head and head generated by water-bearing faults on mountain tunnel structures. First, the virtual image technique and conformal mapping theory are employed to evaluate the water discharge and the head variation at concerned locations of deep circular tunnel embedded in water-rich zone, such as the lining, grouting ring and surrounding rocks. Second, the head difference is introduced as a new parameter to predict the uneven distribution of hydraulic head on tunnel structures. Then this paper contrasts to the classical Harr analytical solution and implements numerical simulation on the fault geological conditions to examine the presented analytical method, receiving reasonable agreements. Furthermore, sensitivity analyses are preformed to investigate the performance of concerned parameters on the distribution of hydraulic head on tunnel structure adjacent to water-bearing fault, including the magnitude of head induced by water-bearing fault, spacing between fault and tunnel, water discharge after drainage ditch installed and fault dip. The interesting point and ingenious approach are tracing the corresponding analytic functions for not only the influence of vertical fault adjacent to the tunnel but also the fault with an inclined angle, which enhances the engineering applicability of presented method. In general, this work contributes to the preliminary design of tunnels in water-rich fault zones and provides a theoretical basis on the tunnel excavation and operation in the mountainous area and other adverse geological environments with faults.

Abstract:The quality of water in water distribution system may vary with both location and time. Water quality models were used to predict spatial and temporal variation of water quality throughout the water system. Before analyzing the variations of water quality, it is necessary to determine the hydrodynamics in water distribution system. Analytical methods for the flow path from water sources to the observed point and water age of every observed node are proposed. This paper makes a further study on water supply route of multi-sources water supply network system. These studies have been applied to an actual water distribution system.

Abstract:Abstract Establishing and perfecting the water rights system is an important way to alleviate the shortage of water resources and realize the optimal allocation of water resources. Agriculture is an important user of water in various water-consumption industries, the confirmation of water rights in irrigation districts to farmers is the inevitable requirement for implementing fine irrigation in agricultural production. In this paper, a double-level water rights allocation model of national canals – farmer households in irrigation district is established. It takes into account the current water consumption of the canal system, the future water-saving potential and the constraint of total amount control at the canal level. It takes into account the asymmetric information of farmer households’ population and irrigation area at the farmer household level. Furthermore, the Gini coefficient method is used to construct the water rights allocation model among farmer households based on the principle of fairness. Finally, Wulanbuhe Irrigation Area in the Hetao Irrigation Area of Inner Mongolia is taken as an example. The results show that the allocated water rights of the national canals in the irrigation district are less than the current because of water-saving measures and water rights of farmer household get compensation or cut respectively. The research has fully tapped the water-saving potential of irrigation districts, refined the distribution of water rights of farmers and can provide a scientific basis for the development of water rights allocation in irrigation districts and water rights transactions between farmers.

Abstract:The water distribution operation model is developed aim to make a transform of Weishan irrigation water management decision making from experimentally qualitative to scientifically quantitative. The model separates the irrigation district into eastern and western canal systems based on quantifying water among users using main canal flow gauged stations. The design of this proposed model responds to the status quo of the irrigation district's water distribution, analyzes existing problems and generalizes different water distribution styles from traditional distribution methods. The model is justified through its application from 1991 to date.
Study on water and salt transportation of different irrigation modes by the simulation of HYDRUS model

Abstract:In accordance with the saturated-unsaturated soil water movement and solute transportation theories and based on the field experiments,the transport of soil water and solute of different irrigation modes in Hetao Irrigation District were simulated by HYDRUS-1D/2D model. Characteristics of the water flow and salt transport of different irrigation modes were analyzed. The model has been verified using the data of field experiments. The results show that under the same quota of irrigation,the effect of salt control of furrow irrigation is better than that of border irrigation. In soil layers of 100cm,the mean value of the soil salt contents in growth stage through furrow irrigation is 24.4% lower than that of border irrigation. Verification using the experiment data indicates that HYDRUS model has a high precision for the simulation of water and salt transportation,and the results can serve as a scientific basis for regional water and salt management.

Study on the Appropriate Degree of Water-Saving Measures in Arid Irrigated Areas Considering Groundwater Level

Abstract:Irrigated areas are major vectors of agricultural development and components of ecosystems. The groundwater level maintains the irrigated areas’ ecology safety and sustainable development. Under the influence of irrational irrigation practices—such as flood irrigation or extreme water saving without consideration of ecological impact—different areas within an irrigation district may experience anomalies in groundwater levels (either too deep or too shallow). It is of great significance to carry out research on water resource allocation and future water-saving strategies, taking into consideration groundwater depths. In this study, a method for the optimal allocation of irrigation water resources that considered groundwater level was used to regulate irrational irrigation practices and to reveal the future direction of water saving. Helan County in Ningxia province, an ecologically fragile and arid irrigated area, was selected as a case study. Multiple scenarios of different water use and different degrees of water-saving were analyzed. The results showed that non-engineering water-saving measures (such as adjusting the planting structure and controlling the amount of irrigation for rice) had better benefits compared to engineering measures (such as efficient water-saving irrigation and channel lining). When implementing only one water-saving measure, the strategy of replacing 75% of the rice area with corn yielded the best results. This approach can reduce the irrigation water shortage rate to 11% and increase by 4.58% the acreage where the groundwater level is reasonable. When multiple water-saving measures are implemented together, the most effective strategy for future water-saving efforts involves the joint implementation of several measures: replacing 75% of the rice area with corn, limiting irrigation for rice to no more than 11.85 thousand m3/ha, adopting high-efficiency water-saving irrigation in 90% of the pump-diverted water irrigation region and 40% of the channel-diverted water irrigation region, and maintaining the channel’s water utilization coefficient at 0.62. This strategy can keep the irrigation water shortage below 3.66% and increase the acreage where the groundwater level is reasonable, by 4.58% per year. The conclusions and research approaches can provide references for the formulation of water-saving measures for irrigated areas’ sustainable development.
