Abstract:Ultrasonic guided waves (UGWs) have attracted attention in the nondestructive testing and structural health monitoring (SHM) of multi-wire cables. They offer such advantages as a single measurement, wide coverage of the acoustic field, and long-range propagation ability. However, the mechanical coupling of multi-wire structures complicates the propagation behaviors of guided waves and signal interpretation. In this paper, UGW propagation in these waveguides is investigated theoretically, numerically, and experimentally from the perspective of dispersion and wave structure, contact acoustic nonlinearity (CAN), and wave energy transfer. Although the performance of all possible propagating wave modes in a multi-wire cable at different frequencies could be obtained by dispersion analysis, it is ineffective to analyze the frequency behaviors of the wave signals of a certain mode, which could be analyzed using the CAN effect. The CAN phenomenon of two mechanically coupled wires in contact was observed, which was demonstrated by numerical guided wave simulation and experiments. Additionally, the measured guided wave energy of wires located in different layers of an aluminum conductor steel-reinforced cable accords with the theoretical prediction. The model of wave energy distribution in different layers of a cable also could be used to optimize the excitation power of transducers and determine the effective monitoring range of SHM.

Abstract:An efficient analytical model for the transfer impedance and admittance of a noncoaxial/twinax braided-shielded cable with apertures on its sheath is proposed by generalizing the old Vance's and Kley's formulas, and it is derived using the complex analyses with an appropriate conformal mapping. Therefore, such a noncoaxial cable is converted into a coaxial one which can be studied using the traditional multiconductor transmission line method. It is shown that the aperture inductance is related to the position of the inner conductor and the radial position of each aperture on its sheath. In addition, the modal domain analysis is performed to obtain the common-mode (CM) and differential-mode (DM) transfer impedance/admittance of the twinax braided-shielded cable, with CM and DM currents inside the inner conductors examined. The proposed model is validated by comparing the results with that obtained by the method of moments (MoM)-based commercial software FEKO. It is found that the uniform distribution of the apertures on the sheath reduces the induced DM current significantly

Abstract:A transmission line model is developed to characterize electromagnetic plane wave coupling with a noncoaxial cable with apertures on its shield. The transfer impedance and admittance of a noncoaxial cable with one-line apertures on its shield are given in the closed form. Therefore, the transmission line equations are derived and solved for the noncoaxial cable. Moreover, the equivalent sources for describing field-to-wire coupling with outer shield are presented in closed form. The proposed model is employed to predict the current induced inside the inner conductor of the noncoaxial cable with line apertures on its shield. In addition, our results are validated by making a comparison with the results from the commercial software FEKO, where good agreements are obtained.

Abstract:An improved finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is proposed for predicting transient responses of coaxial cables which are placed in an electrically large metallic cabin with arbitrary slots and circular windows on its wall. By integrating nodal analysis, multi-conductor transmission line (MTL) equation and FDTD method, we are able to accurately capture electromagnetic interference (EMI) effects on the cables. Our developed algorithm is verified by calculating frequency-dependent transfer impedance of coaxial cables together with induced currents. Numerical calculations are further performed to show the near-end coupled current responses of braided and tubular cables, respectively, and the effects of incident directions and polarizations of the illuminated electromagnetic pulse are both taken into account. Abstract:This paper presents a stable grounding technique for the inner conductor of a coaxial resonator in vacuum and high-power condition applications, where the inner and outer conductors of the coaxial resonator are connected by a ∞ange plate. When this novel technique is applied, the stable and unifled microwave grounding ability is increased by making the stress on the contact surface uniform, the reliability of space products is improved by reducing the deformation of the rod-end at a transverse vibration load of 10g by 75%, and the unstable tiny cracks of the high-power component are fully eliminated.

Abstract:Nowadays in the field of communication, leaky coaxial cables (LCX) are widely used and their performances always determine the capability of a whole communication system. Considering the testing characteristics of LCX, the proposed testing system is designed based on LabVIEW, a developing tool of virtual instrument. With the help of DAQ module and GPIB technology, the hardware part with high efficiency is used to acquire the testing characteristics of LCX such as coupling loss etc. Furthermore considering the tolerance caused by either test site or test equipment, the system also offers correcting compensation to improve the accuracy of the test result. The software offers a user-friendly interface, which provides both data management and data analyses for LCX samples.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with calculating the phase stability of a phase stable cable with multi-physics coupling simulations. A three-dimensional electromagnetic-thermal-flow-mechanics multi-physics coupling model is established to simulate the phase stable cable operating in air. The simulation results demonstrate that the electric field distribution of the corrugated cable shows differences from that of a normal coaxial cable around the outer conductor, i.e., the electric field is stronger around the sharp points of the outer conductor than the blunt points, which elevates the voltage endurance requirement of the cable and the risk of breakdown during the transmission of high power. Regarding the thermal deformation, simulations reveal that the corrugated outer conductor restrains the insulation from expanding along both the cross-section direction and the axial direction, and the thermal expansion might be manipulated through the proper design of the outer conductor parameters. Finally, the consistency between the simulated and measured results of phase stability witnesses the validity of the multi-physics coupling model, and its accuracy might be refined with more precise material properties.

Abstract:The design of a new type slotted leakywave coaxial cable with good coupling loss performance and multiple operating frequency bands is presented, in which FDTD simulation is utilized to obtain the electric and magnetic fields' distribution on a specified surface enclosing a segment of the cable, and then Huygens' Principle is applied to calculate the far field radiation. Coupling effect between slots has also been studied, which is verified to have significant effect on the radiation field at higher frequency band. Genetic algorithm is used to optimize the spacing between the slots inside a fundamental cell and the period of the fundamental cells to get better coupling loss performance. Measured results agree well with the simulation data, indicating that the methodology is effective for the design of such cables with multi-bands requirements.

Abstract:In this paper, a high-speed cable (25 Gb/s) with a longitudinal screen is modeled using HFSS software, which is based on the finite element method. The cable model is constructed directly in HFSS software, where the simulation is performed in the frequency domain up to 20 GHz. Consequently, the single-mode S-parameters of the cable are obtained and transformed into the mixed-mode S-parameters using MATLAB codes. Moreover, the simulated mixed-mode S-parameters are compared with the measurement data obtained by a network analyzer in order to examine the accuracy of the modeling strategy, where a very good agreement is obtained. This HFSS modeling can help us to understand the operation of the cable and its mode conversions before the actual fabrication of the cable.

Abstract:The accumulation of space charge in a coaxial cable under high -voltage direct current (HVDC) may lead to the serious distortion of the internal electrical field, and thus extremely affect the long-term reliability of the cable in service. Therefore, it is significant to measure the space charge characteristic in a full-size power cable in real time. However, because of the existence of a temperature gradient across the cable insulation under DC electrical stress, the density of the dielectric will be inhomogeneous. Moreover, the effect of the coaxial structure on the distortion of measuring waveforms has to be taken into consideration. In this paper, an improved pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) system suited for a full-size power cable under a temperature gradient was realized by designing the units of pulse injection and signal detection. Then, the charge density was corrected according to the nonuniform electric stress distribution and the divergent acoustic propagation. Finally, the system transfer function was amended by adding the dispersion coefficient's quadratic approximation to the general solution of the general wave propagation equation. With this new recovery algorithm, the distortion of the waveform caused by the cable's coaxial structure, acoustic waves' attenuation and dispersion, and temperature gradient effect can be recovered successfully.

Abstract:In view of the high frequency signal transmission in coaxial cable, we can't adopt the ideal lumped parameter theory, and should use the transmission line theory [1]. Through the microwave equivalent circuit method and one - dimensional distribution equivalent circuit, we established the coaxial cable circuit model, which help us to analyze the characteristics of high-frequency signal transmission in the transmission line, mainly including characteristic impedance and the main influencing factors. Finally, combining with the established transmission model and the test result, we analyze the change of the characteristic impedance in the faulty cable, and locate the fault of the cable accurately, which is instructive for the better application of the coaxial cable.

Abstract:This paper presents a simple precision slab-line for N type coaxial automatic tuner. The precision slab-line in N type coaxial automatic tuner is firstly calculated by conformal mapping principle. Then, the transition section between coaxial transmission line and slab-line is optimized using misalignment compensation method. The dielectric support included in the precision coaxial adapter is also designed by coplanar compensation law. Finally, these three modifications are utilized to achieve the overall improvement slab-line with very well match in the designed frequency-band. The measured VSWR results are better than 1.10 from 1GHz to 10GHz using the vector network analyzer.

Abstract:At present, the most important tests for cable testing are the withstand voltage test and the measurement of partial discharge. Different equipment is needed for the test, which is low in efficiency and time consuming. Among them, the ultra-low frequency method is suitable for the withstand voltage test, and the oscillation wave method is suitable for the partial discharge measurement. This article has developed an oscillating wave and 0.1Hz ultra-low frequency two-in-one test device. The basic circuit principle and key technology of the device are introduced. The developed device is used to test and verify 10kV power cables. The circuit realizes the sharing of basic components, not two independent systems, so the cost is lower than that of two independent ultra-low frequency and oscillating wave devices.

Abstract:This paper studies the development of the Nb3Sn Rutherford cable for high-energy accelerators of Western Super-conducting Technologies Company Ltd. (WST). In the first stage of cable development of WST, the cable is made of 18 Nb3Sn strands with a strand diameter of 0.818 mm. The experiment focuses on the cable parameters (filling factor of 83-91%, and a pitch length of 45-60 mm) to achieve both a minimal critical current degradation of the strand and a good mechanical stability of the cable for coil winding. Furthermore, the cable parameters laws are proposed. After cabling, the J(c) degradation is smaller than 5% and RRR (273 K/20 K) is more than 200. Last but not least, the results of the critical current degradation, the cabling parameters, and the microstructure of Rutherford Cable are discussed.

Abstract:In this brief, the design methodology of an antenna calibration network using multi-layer stripline-slotline coupling is proposed. A multi-layer coupler and a two-stage Wilkinson power divider are designed to ensure the basically stable amplitude-phase characteristics of coupling and achieve the wide frequency band. To minimize phase imbalance, the lengths of channels should be kept equal to the maximum extent possible. In addition, the transmission line conversion structure is applied at each port for integration with the antenna array. Aiming at the problems of signal crosstalk and mutual coupling, the isolated via holes are installed near the lines and metal spacers are placed over the ports. By using the semi-closed structure, part of substrates is dug out to expose the resistor welding position. A semi-closed calibration network in series-parallel-fed is fabricated to verify the design methodology. In 8–16 GHz, the amplitude-phase characteristics are considerable, in which the coupling is 37–44 dB and phase deviation is below 8°. The isolation between ports T1-T16 is greater than 33 dB and voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) of them is lower than 1.8.

Abstract:Modern high-energy particle accelerators and free-electron lasers incorporate large quantities of sensitive RF and microwave devices distributed over several kilometers. Such devices require extremely stable phase and time synchronization by means of high-frequency signals distributed along the accelerator facility. Coaxial cables are frequently used to distribute the reference signal over the large machine to synchronize electronic systems. These cables are the main source of undesirable phase drifts in the synchronization system. Signal phase drifts in cables are mainly caused by temperature and humidity variations and their values usually exceed required phase synchronization accuracy by more than an order of magnitude. Air pressure can also influence on the signal phase drifts but with a much smaller impact than from temperature and humidity changes. There are several approaches to reduce signal phase drifts in coaxial cables. This article describes the realization of an active phase stabilization system based on the interference phenomenon. A phase-locked signal from the transmitter is reflected at the end of a coaxial cable link. Directional couplers placed along the cable pick up the forward and reflected signals and interfere them to cancel out the cable phase drifts. Distributed hardware, including interferometer controller/transmitter and receiver modules, was built to demonstrate the system concept and performance. FPGA I/O boards with an Ethernet interface are used to control the system operation. Specialized firmware and software were developed to calibrate and control the system. This article describes the concept of the interferometer link, the designed hardware, basic control algorithms, and performance evaluation results. A prototype of the link was built to distribute a 1.3-GHz signal through a coaxial cable. Measured values of the phase drift suppression factor exceeded the level of 100.

Development of a Coaxial Fixture for the Performance Test of Electromagnetic Pulse Protection Devices

Abstract:Test fixture is an essential device for electromagnetic pulse protection devices access to the test circuit.Therefore,we analyzed the design requirements of test fixture for the protection devices in testing high power electromagnetic pulses,and developed a special test fixture by the means of multi segment coaxial structure.The multi gradual change scheme and the dislocation compensation technology were adopted in the fixture,and the size of each part was optimized by the combination of empirical formula and simulation.By these means,the transmission characteristics of the fixture in high frequency are improved.The test results using the vector network analyzer show that this fixture has good transmission characteristics in the frequency range of 1 MHz～3 GHz.The voltage standing-wave ratio(VSWR) is less than 1.4,and the reflection coefficient is less than-20 dB except for individual frequencies.In addition,the fixture has the advantages of high voltage-resistance,easy access of devices,flexible disassembly and the like,and the test problem of different protective devices in fast pulses of high voltage can be solved effectively.
Design and Experimentally Verification of a Vertical Coaxial Transmission Structure in High resistivity Si Interposer

Abstract:This paper proposes a vertical coaxial transmission structure made of a centered Cu TSV surrounded with a cycle of TSVs as grounding shield. To verify the feasibility, a set of vertical coaxial transmission structure linked with CPW lines is designed to be able to work at 40GHz and parametric study is conducted in the meantime. By changing the diameter of the grounded TSV ring array and the space of centered RF TSVs, the results show that test structures have good high frequency transmission performance; the larger the diameter of the grounded TSV ring array, the better the transmission performance; the S21 parameter does not change significantly when the space between the two centered RF TSVs is changed. With developed TSV process, sample is fabricated and tested. The insertion loss is less than 1.2dB@40 GHz for the two vertical coaxial transmissions structures linked with CPW lines, and it can be derived that it has a less than 0.15dB@40GHz for a single coaxial transmissions structure.

Abstract:We propose a dual-comb broadband microwave vector network analyzer (VNA). One of the optical frequency combs (OFCs) beats with a continuous wave (CW) light to generate the stimulus signal of the device under test, which is a multi-tone signal within a wide bandwidth. Another OFC with slightly different repetition frequency samples the scattering signal and then coherently beats with the CW light, to convert the scattering signal into the intermediate frequency (IF) signal. Thanks to the dual-comb technology, the requirement for the electrical devices is lessened. A wide measurement frequency range can be achieved by sweeping the frequency of the CW light within a narrow range, giving the credit that the multi frequencies in the stimulus signal sweep simultaneously. An electrical back end with narrow bandwidth and low sampling rate can be used to acquire the scattering parameters (S parameters), owing to the fact that the IF signal locates at the low-frequency band and has the fixed frequencies during frequency sweeping. In the experiments, the S parameters of a 25-GHz low-pass filter within 0.001-69.88 GHz is measured by the proposed VNA, utilizing a microwave signal with a frequency sweeping range of about 5 GHz and an electrical back end with a bandwidth of 200 MHz and a sampling rate of 312.5 MHz.

Abstract:Over-the-air (OTA) radiated testing is seen as inevitable for future radio devices due to integrated transceiver radio designs. Wireless cable solution, which can achieve traditional cabled testing functionality OTA, has attracted great attention from industry, standardization, and academia in recent years for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) device performance testing. In state-of-the-art wireless cable solutions, the compensation of the transfer matrix between the OTA probes and antenna ports of the device under test (DUT) is implemented with the help of radio channel emulators (CEs). However, the radio CEs are not customized for such implementations, leading to expensive systems and a waste of valuable CE resources. Employing more probe antennas is a known and effective strategy to improve the robustness and quality of the wireless cable connection, which would further increase the system cost with existing implementations. To address these issues, a novel wireless cable implementation employing a stand-alone programmable amplitude and phase control network is proposed. Though simple and cost-effective, the proposed scheme is demonstrated to work in practice, and it is applicable for more generic testing scenarios where a CE is not required. The experiment validation measurements obtained in the vector network analyzer (VNA)-based passive measurement setup as well as in the active measurement setup clearly demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed scheme.
