Abstract:Matings and crosses within and among geographically different populations of the pearl oyster,Pinctada martensii(Dunker)were carried out in orde r to breed new strains for pearl culture.Six populations of the first filial gene ration have been obtained.Three population designated BB 1,DD 1,and SS 1 were from matings of wild populations of Beihai(BW),Daya Bay(DW),and Sanya(SW).T hree populations,BD 1,SS 1,and DS 1 were from cross between BW and DW,BW and SW,and DW and SW respectively.P.martensii (Dunker) was a susceptible oyster to be infested by poly- chaetes. The infestation rates were 66 7%~75 5% in 6 populations of the first filial generation. There were no significant differences in infestation rates between male oysters and female oysters(P0 05).In t he same population, infestion rates in double valves of a oyster were significantly higher than in single valve(P0 05),and the main morphological traits,s hell length, shell width, total weight and shell weight did not appear significant differences between non-infested oysters and infested oysters (P0 05).Th e h armfulness of polychaete infestation would lead to high mortality of the pearl o ysters. The infestation rates in crossing filial populations,DS 1 and BD 1 decreased by 8 4% and 8 8% respectively in comparison with self mating popultion BB 1 (P0 05).The reduced infestation rates in DS 1 and BD 1 vs BB 1 showed that some resistance to polychaete could be gained from cross between populations.
