Abstract:Results of a survey of polychaete infestation in7pearl oyster farms and11culture populations in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region,Guangdong and Hainan Provinces, clearly showthat polychaete parasitic disease is both comˉmon and widespread, indeed,is the most hazardous to effect culture of pearl oyster,Pinctada martensii in China.A heavy polychaete infestation of over76%appeared in4farms and5populations separately in Guangxi Province,Hainan Province and Guangdong Province.Infestation rates of bi-valves were significantly higher than those of single valves in the same heavily infested population(P0.05).Medium infestation rates of less than40%,were found in3other farms and6populations in locations across Guangdong and Hainan Provinces. There was no significant difference in infestation rates between female and male pearl oysters(P0.05).In heavily infested farms, infestation rates did not showsignificant differences between mid-juvenile and adult oysters, but significant differences appeared in infested farms experiencing a medium infestation level. The particular culture methods used at farms were thought to be directly related to polychaete infestation rates.
