Abstract:This paper attempts to examine the factors affecting pregnancy-specific induced abortion and test hypotheses regarding the micro and macro determinants of induced abortion in China. A hierarchical generalized linear model has been used to conduct a multilevel analysis of the probability of pregnancy -specific induced abortion, addressing the question that if and to what extent both the micro and macro factors affecting their likelihood of experiencing abortions for Chinese women between 1992-1997. Results show that both the micro and macro determinants have independent and significant influence on induced abortion, but the macro effects depend upon the pregnancy order. Macro determinants also have significant influence on micro-level differentials in induced abortion.
